Charged-hadron and identified-hadron (𝐾$^{0}_{𝑆}$, Λ, $Ξ$ − ) yield measurements in photonuclear Pb + Pb and 𝑝 + Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with ATLAS

This paper presents the measurement of charged-hadron and identified-hadron (𝐾$^{0}_{𝑆}$, Λ, $Ξ$ − ) yields in photonuclear collisions using 1.7nb −1 of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV Pb + Pb data collected in 2018 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Candidate photonuclear events are selected using a combination of tracking and calorimeter information, including the zero-degree calorimeter. The yields as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity are measured in these photonuclear collisions as a function of charged-particle multiplicity. These photonuclear results are compared with 0.1 nb −1 of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV p + Pb data collected in 2016 by ATLAS using similar charged-particle multiplicity selections. These photonuclear measurements shed light on potential quark-gluon plasma formation in photonuclear collisions via observables sensitive to radial flow, enhanced baryon-to-meson ratios, and strangeness enhancement. The results are also compared with the Monte Carlo generator and hydrodynamic calculations to test whether such photonuclear collisions may produce small droplets of quark-gluon plasma that flow collectively.

Low-Frequency Correlated Charge-Noise Measurements Across Multiple Energy Transitions in a Tantalum Transmon

Transmon qubits fabricated with tantalum metal have been shown to possess energy relaxation times greater than 400 𝜇⁢s and, as such, present an attractive platform for high precision, correlated noise studies across multiple higher-energy transitions. Tracking the multilevel fluctuating qudit frequencies with a precision enabled by the high coherence of the device allows us to extract the charge offset and quasiparticle dynamics. We observe qualitatively different charge-offset behavior in the tantalum device than those measured in previous low-frequency charge-noise studies. In particular, we find the charge-offset dynamics are dominated by rare, discrete jumps between a finite number of quasistationary charge configurations, a previously unobserved charge-noise process in superconducting qubits.

Direct-photon production in inelastic and high-multiplicity proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

In this letter, we present the first measurement of direct photons at the transverse momentum of 1 < 𝑝 T < 6 GeV/𝑐 at midrapidity 𝜂 < 0.8 in inelastic and high-multiplicity proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The fraction of virtual direct photons in the inclusive virtual photon spectrum is obtained from a fit to the dielectron invariant mass spectrum. In the limit of zero invariant mass, this fraction is equal to the relative contribution of real direct photons in the inclusive real photon spectrum. Contributions from decays of light- flavour neutral mesons are estimated using independent measurements in proton–proton collisions at the same energy and the same event class. For the first time at the LHC energies, a direct-photon signal is observed at low 𝑝T in both inelastic and high-multiplicity event classes, with a significance of 3.2𝜎 and 1.9𝜎 in terms of standard deviations, correspondingly. The yield of direct photons in inelastic pp collisions is compared to perturbative QCD calculations. The integrated photon yield is studied as a function of charged-particle multiplicity and is compared to the results from other experiments and theoretical calculations. The results show a significant increase of direct- photon yield with charged-particle multiplicity.

Measurement of the production of (anti)nuclei in p–Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

Measurements of (anti)proton, (anti)deuteron, and (anti)3He production in the rapidity range -1< y < 0 as a function of the transverse momentum and event multiplicity in p–Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon pair $\sqrt{S_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV are presented. The coalescence parameters B 2 and B 3 , measured as a function of the transverse momentum per nucleon and of the mean charged-particle multiplicity density, confirm a smooth evolution from low to high multiplicity across different collision systems and energies. The ratios between (anti)deuteron and (anti) 3 He yields and those of (anti)protons are also reported as a function of the mean charged-particle multiplicity density. A comparison with the predictions of the statistical hadronization and coalescence models for different collision systems and center-of-mass energies favors the coalescence description for the deuteron-to-proton yield ratio with respect to the canonical statistical model.

(Anti-)deuteron production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13 \ \text {TeV}$

The study of (anti-)deuteron production in pp collisions has proven to be a powerful tool to investigate the formation mechanism of loosely bound states in high-energy hadronic collisions. In this paper the production of $\text {(anti-)deuterons}$ is studied as a function of the charged particle multiplicity in inelastic pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV using the ALICE experiment. Thanks to the large number of accumulated minimum bias events, it has been possible to measure (anti-)deuteron production in pp collisions up to the same charged particle multiplicity ( ${\mathrm {d} N_{ch}/\mathrm {d} \eta } \sim 26$ ) as measured in p–Pb collisions at similar centre-of-mass energies. Within the uncertainties, the deuteron yield in pp collisions resembles the one in p–Pb interactions, suggesting a common formation mechanism behind the production of light nuclei in hadronic interactions. In this context the measurements are compared with the expectations of coalescence and statistical hadronisation models (SHM).

Charged-particle production as a function of the relative transverse activity classifier in pp, p–Pb, and Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC

Measurements of charged-particle production in pp, p–Pb, and Pb–Pb collisions in the toward, away, and transverse regions with the ALICE detector are discussed. These regions are defined event-by-event relative to the azimuthal direction of the charged trigger particle, which is the reconstructed particle with the largest transverse momentum $(p^{trig}_T)$ in the range 8 < $p^{trig}_T$< 15 GeV/c. The toward and away regions contain the primary and recoil jets, respectively; both regions are accompanied by the underlying event (UE). In contrast, the transverse region perpendicular to the direction of the trigger particle is dominated by the so-called UE dynamics, and includes also contributions from initial- and final-state radiation. The relative transverse activity classifier, $R_T = N^T_{ch}/\langle N^T_{ch}\rangle$, is used to group events according to their UE activity, where $N^T_{ch}$ is the charged-particle multiplicity per event in the transverse region and $\langle N^T_{ch}\rangle$ is the mean value over the whole analysed sample. The energy dependence of the R T distributions in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76, 5.02, 7, and 13 TeV is reported, exploring the Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling properties of the multiplicity distributions. The first measurements of charged-particle p T spectra as a function of R T in the three azimuthal regions in pp, p–Pb, and Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV are also reported. Data are compared with predictions obtained from the event generators PYTHIA 8 and EPOS LHC. This set of measurements is expected to contribute to the understanding of the origin of collective-like effects in small collision systems (pp and p–Pb).

Collectivity in Ultraperipheral Pb+Pb Collisions at the Large Hadron Collider

In this work, we present the first full (3+1)D dynamical simulations of ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Extrapolating from p + Pb collisions, we explore whether a quasireal photon γ* interacting with the lead nucleus in an ultraperipheral collision can create a many-body system exhibiting fluid behavior. Assuming strong final-state interactions, we provide model results for charged hadron multiplicity, identified particle mean transverse momenta, and charged hadron anisotropic flow coefficients, and compare them with experimental data from the ALICE and ATLAS Collaborations. The elliptic flow hierarchy between p + Pb and γ*+Pb collisions is dominated by the difference in longitudinal flow decorrelations and reproduces the experimental data well. We have demonstrated that our theoretical framework provides a quantitative tool to study particle production and collectivity for all system sizes, ranging from central heavy-ion collisions to small asymmetric collision systems at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider and even at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Correlations between azimuthal anisotropy and mean transverse momentum in pp, pPb, and peripheral PbPb collisions

Correlations between azimuthal anisotropy and mean transverse momentum of charged particles in proton-proton (pp), proton-lead (pPb), and peripheral lead-lead (PbPb) collisions are presented as a function of charged particle multiplicity. The pp, pPb and PbPb collision data were collected using the CMS detector at the LHC with a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 13, 8.16 and 5.02 TeV, respectively. The two- and four-particle cumulants for the second- and third-order Fourier anisotropy harmonics are correlated with the mean transverse momentum of charged particles on an event-by-event basis. In pp and pPb systems, the observed correlation coefficients based on two-particle cumulants are found to change from negative to positive values as the charged particle multiplicity decreases. The sign changes disappear when the correlated particles are required to be further apart in pseudorapidity. Additionally, no sign changes in correlation coefficients are observed when employing four-particle cumulants. Models incorporating initial-state gluon saturation and final-state hydrodynamic evolutions are compared to pPb data and the predicted sign changes are not observed.

Observation of abnormal suppression of f 0 (980) production in p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 5.02 TeV

The dependence of f 0 (980) production on the final-state charged-particle multiplicity in p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 5.02 TeV is reported. The production of f 0 (980) is measured with the ALICE detector via the f 0 (980) → π + π – decay channel in a midrapidity region of –0.5 < y < 0. Particle yield ratios of f 0 (980) to π and K*(892) 0 are found to be decreasing with increasing charged-particle multiplicity. The magnitude of the suppression of the f 0 (980)/π and f 0 (980)/K*(892) 0 yield ratios is found to be dependent on the transverse momentum p T , suggesting different mechanisms responsible for the measured effects. Furthermore, the nuclear modification factor Q pPb of f 0 (980) is measured in various multiplicity ranges. The Q pPb shows a strong suppression of the f 0 (980) production in the p T region up to about 4 GeV/c. The results on the particle yield ratios and Q pPb for f 0 (980) may help to understand the late hadronic phase in p–Pb collisions and the nature of the internal structure of f 0 (980) particle.

Measurements of higher-order cumulants of multiplicity and net-electric charge distributions in inelastic proton-proton interactions by NA61/SHINE

This paper presents the energy dependence of multiplicity and net-electric charge fluctuations in p+p interactions at beam momenta 20, 31, 40, 80, and 158 \(\text{ Ge }\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text{ V }\!/\!c\). Results are corrected for the experimental biases and quantified with the use of cumulants and factorial cumulants. Cumulant ratios are an essential tool in the search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter in heavy ion collisions. Measurements performed in p+p interactions provide a vital baseline estimation in these studies. The measured signals are compared with the string hadronic models Epos1.99 and FTFP-BERT.

Multiplicity and pseudo-rapidity density distributions of charged particles produced in pp, pA and AA collisions at RHIC & LHC energies

Multiplicity and pseudorapidity (η) density (d N ch /dη) distributions of charged hadrons provide key information towards understanding the particle production mechanisms and initial conditions of high-energy heavy-ion collisions. However, detector constraints limit the η-range across which charged particle measurements can be carried out. Extrapolating the measured distributions to large η-range by parameterizing measured distributions and by using calculations from event generators, we characterize the production of charged particles over the full kinematic range. In the present study, we use three different ansätze to obtain quantitative descriptions of the shape of pseudorapidity distributions of charged hadrons produced in pp, p–A, and A–A collisions for beam energies ( s NN ) ranging from a few GeV to a few TeV corresponding to RHIC and LHC energies. We study the limiting fragmentation behavior in these collisions and report evidence for participant-scaling violations in high-energy collisions at the TeV scale. We additionally examine measured pseudorapidity distributions to constrain models describing initial conditions of particle production. We predict the centrality dependence of charged particle multiplicity distributions at FAIR and NICA energies and give an estimation of charged particle multiplicity at η = 0 for the proposed HE-LHC and FCC energies.

System-size dependence of the hadronic rescattering effect at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

The first measurements of K * ( 892 ) 0 resonance production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in Xe-Xe collisions at s N N = 5.44 TeV and p p collisions at s = 5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector are presented. The resonance is reconstructed at midrapidity ( | y | < 0.5) using the hadronic decay channel K * 0 → K ± π ∓ . Measurements of transverse-momentum integrated yield, mean transverse-momentum, nuclear modification factor of K * 0 , and yield ratios of resonance to stable hadron ( K * 0 / K ) are compared across different collision systems ( p p , p -Pb, Xe-Xe, and Pb-Pb) at similar collision energies to investigate how the production of K * 0 resonances depends on the size of the system formed in these collisions. The hadronic rescattering effect is found to be independent of the size of colliding systems and mainly driven by the produced charged-particle multiplicity, which is a proxy of the volume of produced matter at the chemical freeze-out. In addition, the production yields of K * 0 in Xe-Xe collisions are utilized to constrain the dependence of the kinetic freeze-out temperature on the system size using the hadron resonance gas–partial chemical equilibrium model. ©2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration 2024 CERN

Multiplicity scaling of light nuclei production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Using the nucleon coalescence model based on kinetic freeze-out nucleons from the 3D MUSIC+UrQMD and the 2D VISHNU hybrid model with a crossover equation of state, we study the multiplicity dependence of deuteron ( d ) and triton ( t ) production from central to peripheral Au+Au collisions at s NN = 7.7, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV and Pb+Pb at s NN = 2.76 TeV, respectively. It is found that the ratio N t N p / N d 2 of the proton yield N p , deuteron yield N d and triton yield N t exhibits a scaling behavior in its multiplicity dependence, i.e., decreasing monotonically with increasing charged-particle multiplicity. A similar multiplicity scaling of this ratio is also found in the nucleon coalescence calculation based on kinetic freeze-out nucleons from a multiphase transport (AMPT) model. The scaling behavior of N t N p / N d 2 can be naturally explained by the interplay between the sizes of light nuclei and the nucleon emission source. We further argue that the multiplicity scaling of N t N p / N d 2 can be used to validate the production mechanism of light nuclei, and the collision energy dependence of this yield ratio can further serve as a baseline in the search for the QCD critical point in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Near L-edge Single and Multiple Photoionization of Doubly Charged Iron Ions

Using the photon-ion merged-beams technique at a synchrotron light source, we have measured relative cross sections for single and up to five-fold photoionization of Fe 2+ ions in the energy range of 690-920 eV. This range contains thresholds and resonances associated with ionization and excitation of 2p and 2s electrons. Calculations were performed to simulate the total absorption spectra. The theoretical results show very good agreement with the experimental data, if overall energy shifts of up to 2.5 eV are applied to the calculated resonance positions and assumptions are made about the initial experimental population of the various levels of the Fe 2+ ([Ar]3d 6 ) ground configuration. Furthermore, we performed extensive calculations of the Auger cascades that result when an electron is removed from the 2p subshell of Fe 2+ . These computations lead to a better agreement with the measured product-charge-state distributions as compared to earlier work. We conclude that the L-shell absorption features of low-charged iron ions are useful for identifying gas-phase iron in the interstellar medium and for discriminating against the various forms of condensed-phase iron bound to composite interstellar dust grains.

First observation of strange baryon enhancement with effective energy in pp collisions at the LHC

The production of (multi-)strange hadrons is measured at midrapidity in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV as a function of the local charged-particle multiplicity in the pseudorapidity interval |η| < 0.5 and of the very-forward energy measured by the ALICE Zero-Degree Calorimeters. The latter provides information on the effective energy, i.e. the energy available for particle production in the collision once subtracted from the centre-of-mass energy. The yields of K$^{0}_{s}$, $Λ$ + $\overline{Λ}$, and $Ξ$ – + $\overline{Ξ}$ + per charged-particle increase with the effective energy. In addition, this work exploits a multi-differential approach to decouple the roles of local multiplicity and effective energy in such an enhancement. The results presented in this article provide new insights into the interplay between global properties of the collision, such as the initial available energy in the event, and the locally produced final hadronic state, connected to the charged-particle multiplicity at midrapidity. Notably, a strong increase of strange baryon production with effective energy is observed for fixed charged-particle multiplicity at midrapidity. These results are discussed within the context of existing phenomenological models of hadronisation implemented in different tunes of the PYTHIA 8 event generator.

Multiplicity and net-electric charge fluctuations in central Ar+Sc interactions at 13 A , 19 A , 30 A , 40 A , 75 A , and 150 A GeV/c beam momenta measured by NA61/SHINE at the CERN SPS

This paper presents results on multiplicity fluctuations of positively and negatively charged hadrons as well as net-electric charge fluctuations measured in central Ar+Sc interactions at beam momenta 13 A , 19 A , 30 A , 40 A , 75 A , and 150 A GeV/c. The fluctuation analysis is one of the tools to search for the predicted critical point of strongly interacting matter. Results are corrected for the experimental biases and quantified using cumulant ratios. In most instances, multiplicity and net-charge distributions appear narrower than the corresponding Poisson or Skellam distributions. Cumulant ratios are compared with the EPOS1.99 model predictions, which provide a qualitative description that aligns with observations for positively and negatively charged particles. The obtained results are also compared to earlier NA61/SHINE results from inelastic p+p interactions in the same analysis acceptance.

Wire-cell 3D pattern recognition techniques for neutrino event reconstruction in large LArTPCs: algorithm description and quantitative evaluation with MicroBooNE simulation

Wire-Cell is a 3D event reconstruction package for liquid argon time projection chambers. Through geometry, time, and drifted charge from multiple readout wire planes, 3D space points with associated charge are reconstructed prior to the pattern recognition stage. Pattern recognition techniques, including track trajectory and dQ/dx (ionization charge per unit length) fitting, 3D neutrino vertex fitting, track and shower separation, particle-level clustering, and particle identification are then applied on these 3D space points as well as the original 2D projection measurements. A deep neural network is developed to enhance the reconstruction of the neutrino interaction vertex. Compared to traditional algorithms, the deep neural network boosts the vertex efficiency by a relative 30% for charged-current ν e interactions. Therefore, this pattern recognition achieves 80–90% reconstruction efficiencies for primary leptons, after a 65.8% (72.9%) vertex efficiency for charged-current ν e (ν μ ) interactions. Based on the resulting reconstructed particles and their kinematics, we also achieve 15-20% energy reconstruction resolutions for charged-current neutrino interactions.
