Tuning charge density wave order and superconductivity in the kagome metals KV 3 Sb 5 – x Sn x and RbV 3 Sb 5 – x Sn x

The family of AV 3 Sb 5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) kagome metals exhibits charge density wave (CDW) order, proposed to be chiral, followed by a lower temperature superconducting state. Recent studies have proposed the importance of band structure saddle points proximal to the Fermi energy in governing these two transitions. Here we show the effects of hole doping achieved via chemical substitution of Sn for Sb on the CDW and superconducting states in both KV 3 Sb 5 and RbV 3 Sb 5 and generate a phase diagram. Furthermore, hole doping lifts the Γ pocket and van Hove singularities toward E F causing the superconducting T C in both systems to increase to about 4.5 K, while rapidly suppressing the CDW state.

Quantum Phase Diagram and Spontaneously Emergent Topological Chiral Superconductivity in Doped Triangular-Lattice Mott Insulators

The topological superconducting state is a highly sought-after quantum state hosting topological order and Majorana excitations. Here, in this Letter, we explore the mechanism to realize the topological superconductivity (TSC) in the doped Mott insulators with time-reversal symmetry (TRS). Through large-scale density matrix renormalization group study of an extended triangular-lattice t–J model on the six- and eight-leg cylinders, we identify a d + id-wave chiral TSC with spontaneous TRS breaking, which is characterized by a Chern number C=2 and quasi-long-range superconducting order. We map out the quantum phase diagram with by tuning the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) electron hopping and spin interaction. In the weaker NNN-coupling regime, we identify a pseudogaplike phase with a charge stripe order coexisting with fluctuating superconductivity, which can be tuned into d -wave superconductivity by increasing the doping level and system width. The TSC emerges in the intermediate-coupling regime, which has a transition to a d-wave superconducting phase with larger NNN couplings. The emergence of the TSC is driven by geometrical frustrations and hole dynamics which suppress spin correlation and charge order, leading to a topological quantum phase transition.

Majorana bound states with chiral magnetic textures

The aim of this Tutorial is to give a pedagogical introduction into realizations of Majorana fermions, usually termed as Majorana bound states (MBSs), in condensed matter systems with magnetic textures. We begin by considering the Kitaev chain model of “spinless” fermions and show how two “half” fermions can appear at chain ends due to interactions. By considering this model and its two-dimensional generalization, we emphasize intricate relation between topological superconductivity and possible realizations of MBS. We further discuss how “spinless” fermions can be realized in more physical systems, e.g., by employing the spin-momentum locking. Next, we demonstrate how magnetic textures can be used to induce synthetic or fictitious spin–orbit interactions, and, thus, stabilize MBS. We describe a general approach that works for arbitrary textures and apply it to skyrmions. We show how MBS can be stabilized by elongated skyrmions, certain higher order skyrmions, and chains of skyrmions. We also discuss how braiding operations can be performed with MBS stabilized on magnetic skyrmions. Furthermore, this Tutorial is aimed at students at the graduate level.

Planar Thermal Hall Effect from Phonons in Cuprates

A surprising “planar” thermal Hall effect, whereby the field is parallel to the current, has recently been observed in a few magnetic insulators; this effect has been attributed to exotic excitations such as Majorana fermions or chiral magnons. Here, we investigate the possibility of a planar thermal Hall effect in three different cuprate materials, in which the conventional thermal Hall conductivity 𝜅 xy (with an out-of-plane field perpendicular to the current) is dominated by either electrons or phonons. Our measurements show that the planar 𝜅 xy from electrons in cuprates is zero, as expected from the absence of a Lorentz force in the planar configuration. By contrast, we observe a sizable planar 𝜅 xy in those samples where the thermal Hall response is due to phonons, even though it should, in principle, be forbidden by the high crystal symmetry. Our findings call for a careful reexamination of the mechanisms responsible for the phonon thermal Hall effect in insulators.

Superconducting state of Sr 2 RuO 4 in the presence of longer-range Coulomb interactions

The symmetry of the superconducting condensate in Sr 2 RuO 4 remains controversial after recent experiments overturned the dominant chiral p-wave paradigm. We perform a theoretical study of pairing by spin- and chargefluctuations in Sr 2 RuO 4 , including the effects of spin-orbit coupling, and both local and longer-range Coulomb repulsion. The latter has important consequences for Sr 2 RuO 4 due to the near-degeneracy of symmetry-distinct pairing states in this material. Here we find leading nodal s', d xy , and helical (p) solutions, while both the g- and d x 2 –y 2 -wave channels remain noncompetitive. This suggests nodal time-reversal symmetry broken s' + id xy or s' + ip phases, promoted by longer-range Coulomb repulsion, as the most favorable candidates for Sr 2 RuO 4 . We analyze the properties of these states and show that the s' + id xy solution agrees with the bulk of available experimental data.

Fermi level tuning and double-dome superconductivity in the kagome metal CsV 3 Sb 5 – x Sn x

The recently reported AV 3 Sb 5 (A = K , Rb, Cs) family of kagome metals are candidates for unconventional superconductivity and chiral charge density wave (CDW) order; both potentially arise from nested saddle points in their band structures close to the Fermi energy. Here, we use chemical substitution to introduce holes into CsV 3 Sb 5 and unveil an unconventional coupling of the CDW and superconducting states. Specifically, we generate a phase diagram for CsV 3 Sb 5 – x Sn x that illustrates the impact of hole doping the system and lifting the nearest van Hove singularity toward and above E F . Superconductivity exhibits a nonmonotonic evolution with the introduction of holes, resulting in two “domes” peaked at 3.6 and 4.1 K and the rapid suppression of three-dimensional CDW order. Further, the evolution of CDW and superconducting order is compared with the evolution of the electronic band structure of CsV 3 Sb 5 – x Sn x , where the complete suppression of superconductivity seemingly coincides with an electronlike band comprised of Sb p z orbitals pushed above E F .
