Optimization-based technoeconomic comparison of multi-stage membrane distillation configurations for hypersaline produced water desalination

Unconventional oil and gas production raises concerns regarding sustainable management of high salinity wastewaters generated in this process. Membrane distillation (MD) is a thermal desalination process capable of treating hypersaline brines such as produced water. The low single pass recovery in MD systems operated in a single stage requires a large recycle stream to achieve the desired recovery, resulting in high energy consumption and operating cost. Multistage configurations in continuous recirculation operation mode offer the potential to reduce the energy intensity of MD systems. However, rigorous analysis is needed to assess the performance of MD configurations when operating in multi-stage mode. Here, we present an optimization-based comparison of economic and energetic performance for five configurations of MD (including DCMD, AGMD, PGMD, CGMD, and VMD) operating in multi-stage continuous recirculation mode. Our findings demonstrate that multistage operation reduces the treatment cost and energy intensity of all MD configurations compared to single stage MD, with the greatest benefit for VMD and PGMD. AGMD with five stages outperforms other configurations with 3.58 $/m 3 feed treatment cost, followed by VMD, CGMD, DCMD, and PGMD with 3.8, 4.2, 5.4, and 9.06$/m 3 feed treatment costs corresponding to twelve, eight, eight, and sixteen stages, respectively.

First considerations on the supporting structures of FCC-ee booster and collider in the arc regions

In 2022, the FCC Feasibility Study management mandated a working group to analyse the best configuration of the FCC-ee tunnel in the arc regions, in view of the construction of a mock-up of the arc half-cell. One of the main and most challenging goals of the study, named FCC-ee Arc Half-Cell Mock-up Project, was to perform a preliminary investigation on the principles of supporting the Short-Straight Sections and dipoles of the half-cells, both for the booster and for the collider machines. This is an important input needed for the choice of the best configuration of the relative placement of the booster with respect to the collider. The structural stiffness, mass and stability of the supporting structures must be optimized to minimize the vibrations transmitted/transferred to the magnetic system of the accelerators by elements such as pumps, water cooling system, beam thermomechanical stresses, powering elements, etc. To perform the study, tools such as CAD software, FEM and analytical techniques were employed. This paper summarizes the preliminary design concepts and the results of the simulations performed.

A continuous integration and web framework in support of the ATLAS publication process

The ATLAS collaboration defines methods, establishes procedures, and organises advisory groups to manage the publication processes of scientific papers, conference papers, and public notes. All stages are managed through web systems, computing programs, and tools that are designed and developed by the collaboration. A framework called FENCE is integrated into the CERN GitLab software repository, to automatically configure workspaces where each analysis can be documented by the analysis team and managed by the relevant coordinators. Continuous integration is used to guide the writers in applying consistent and correct formatting when preparing papers to be submitted to scientific journals. Additional software assures the correctness of other aspects of each paper, such as the lists of collaboration authors, funding agencies, and foundations. The framework and the workflow therein provide automatic and easy support to the researchers and facilitates each phase of the publication process, allowing authors to focus on the article contents. The framework and its integration with the most up to date and efficient tools has consequently provided a more professional and efficient automatized work environment to the whole collaboration.

Opportunities for an Integrated Web-Based Workbench for Data Access and Analysis - 20244

Management of environmental issues can require integration of multiple types of data and information, conducting data analysis and interpretation, and providing data visualization for effective communications. These data elements are important for site management to support regulator interactions and provide defensibility for remedial decisions. Databases and information repositories are core elements of managing data; however, efficient data access and analysis also enable effective site management. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford Site is an example of a complex site with a voluminous quantity of environmental data and a need for efficient site management. Different tiers of data and information tools have been developed and deployed to address site needs. These tools are configured for ready access via the web site interfaces and meet the rigorous quality requirements for environmental site management. Evolving efforts are focused on an integrated platform to meet site environmental management needs. In this platform, users can access site information at multiple levels of detail based on their need and permissions, so that data and associated analyses are presented within the context of the site mission and the user's management or technical needs. This concept is not only applicable at individual sites like Hanford but also applicable at other sites within the DOE complex. An integrated web-based architecture that links data visualization, data analytics, and management tools can provide holistic access to large data sets, minimize complexity, and maximize interactivity and technical communication. Secure Command Line Solution for Token-based Authentication

The WLCG is modernizing its security infrastructure, replacing X.509 client authentication with the newer industry standard of JSON Web Tokens (JWTs) obtained through the Open ID Connect (OIDC) protocol. There is a wide variety of software available using the standards, but most of it is for Web browser-based applications and doesn’t adapt well to the command line-based software used heavily in High Throughput Computing (HTC). OIDC command line client software did exist, but it did not meet our requirements for security and convenience. This paper discusses a command line solution we have made based on the popular existing secrets management software from Hashicorp called vault. We made a package called htvault-config to easily configure a vault service and another called htgettoken to be the vault client. In addition, we have integrated use of the tools into the HTCondor workload management system, although they also work well independent of HTCondor. All of the software is open source, under active development, and ready for use.

Two-stage reflective self-seeding scheme for high-repetition-rate X-ray free-electron lasers

X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) open a new era of X-ray based research by generating extremely intense X-ray flashes. To further improve the spectrum brightness, a self-seeding FEL scheme has been developed and demonstrated experimentally. As the next step, new-generation FELs with high repetition rates are being designed, built and commissioned around the world. A high repetition rate would significantly speed up the scientific research; however, alongside this improvement comes new challenges surrounding thermal management of the self-seeding monochromator. Here, a new configuration for self-seeding FELs is proposed, operated under a high repetition rate which can strongly suppress the thermal effects on the monochromator and provides a narrow-bandwidth FEL pulse. Three-dimension time-dependent simulations have been performed to demonstrate this idea. Finally, with this proposed configuration, high-repetition-rate XFEL facilities are able to generate narrow-bandwidth X-ray pulses without obvious thermal concern on the monochromators.

GenConfig

SAND2025-04091O GenConfig converts a build name into a set of configuration flags or CMake fragment files for use with CMake. This is accomplished using ConfigKeywordParser and two configuration files. GenConfig is the main tool in a set of software libraries used for generating and configuring an environment and configuration flags. The tool uses other modules within the GenConfig family to ultimately parse and enable an environment that is ready for development from a given build name string. The unique algorithms used in GenConfig mainly pertain to validating the format and checking the existence of the given build string in the expected configuration .ini files.
