A Low Cost SIPM Evaluation and Control Prototyping System including accurate bias voltage generation, leakage current measurement, and temperature control using Peltier cooling

We describe an electronics system to operate SIPMs in the laboratory. The system is comprised of a single channel amplifier board (SIPM Amp) and a 4-channel control board to which up to 4 SIPM Amp boards can be connected. The control board supplies a common low voltage power for the amplifiers. All channels feature individually regulated bias and Peltier power voltages, along withPt10K RTD readout. A graphical user interface allows control of the bias voltages, amplifier voltage, Peltier voltages, and also provides for readback of leakage currents and other voltages. The GUI app has a feedback loop to measure the SIPM temperature (with the PT10K) and generate correction voltages to the Peltier to regulate the temperature. The temperatures, which can be achieved by Peltier cooling depend on the thermal design of the setup, the practical limit being about 50C below ambient. The SIPM Amp. board is a small (3x5cm) PCB that has a single SIPM readout channel. The SIPM scan be surface mounted on the pcb or connected to a 2-pin 0.100" socket. The area around the SIPM footprint is thermally isolated by perforations in the PCB. The RTD is located inside the thermal break. Onboard is BV and LV filtering. The 10X amplifier is based on MiniCircuits' GALI-S66+ integrated circuit, tweaked for a 6V power. The amplifier was selected for a combination of high bandwidth, low noise, and low power. An accoupled amplifier output is connected to an SMA connector. For best operation of this inverting amplifier the output signal should be in the range of 0 to -1V.The Amplifier board is connected to the Control board with a 10-conductor 0.025" pitch ribbon cable, carrying all the services. Peltier power for currents more than 1A should use a separate 2-contact connector.

A 500 KV INVERTED GEOEMTRY FEEDTHROUGH FOR A HIGH VOLT-AGE DC ELECTRON GUN

This contribution reports on the development of an unprecedented inverted-insulator with cable connector for reliably applying 500 kV dc to a future polarized beam photogun, to be designed for operating at 350kV without field emission. Such a photogun design could then be used for generating a polarized electron beam to drive a spin-polarized positron source as a demonstrator for high energy nuclear physics at JLab. There are no commercial cable connectors that fit the large inverted insulators required for that voltage range. Our proposed concept is based on a modified epoxy receptacle with intervening SF6 layer and a test electrode in a vacuum vessel.

H-Canyon Jumper Gasket Sealing Evaluation

H-Canyon Documented Safety Analysis approved December 2019 credits the leak integrity of HCanyon (HCA) process tanks, piping, and jumpers in preventing the release of radioactive material in a post seismic environment. Demonstration of leak tightness capability for this equipment was achieved through substantial analytical effort. However, one potential weak point that affects leak integrity exists at the gasketed joint between Hanford Connectors (HC) and nozzles. Review of the HCA Crane Log over a three-year period indicates the HCs periodically leak. Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) was requested to perform gasket compression tests that evaluate gasket relaxation characteristics, i.e., creep, and provide improvements to the HC installation process that can reduce or eliminate the frequency of leaks at HCs. A HC torque value of 312 ft-lbf is the target value used because it is the minimum torque value, with 95% confidence, when an unlubricated HC is impacted for standard sealing period of 9 seconds.

H-Canyon Jumper Gasket Sealing Evaluation

H-Canyon Documented Safety Analysis approved December 2019 credits the leak integrity of H-Canyon (HCA) process tanks, piping, and jumpers in preventing the release of radioactive material in a post seismic environment. In the HCA pipe-jumper connections are installed remotely by using HCs. HCs inherently add to the uncertainty of a gasketed joint because a calibrated torque value cannot be applied. The gasket material is a special material made of asbestos-fiber impregnated with Teflon. This material has been used for decades and generally performs well but does leak intermittently as gaskets creep and preloaded torque is lost. Gasket types are either snap-ring (SR) or lampshade (LS). Both gasket types cover the same seating area. The SR gasket is designed to remain with the jumper when the jumper is removed leaving the nozzle faces clean of any debris. SR gaskets are initially installed when the jumper is fabricated. Changing gaskets is time consuming and the radioactive environment presents risks to personnel. When jumpers are removed LS gaskets could be used to better seal the connection to reduce down time and ALARA concerns. That is, an LS gasket would be remotely positioned over the nozzle and the HC reinstalled. Testing also included two situations not typical of plant operation. One situation was the use of the non-standard double-layered gaskets (DG), and the other situation was the use of a LS without removal of the installed SR gasket. The DG was used when the supply of LS gaskets ended, so that testing could continue. It was of interest to demonstrate this gasket’s creep response because the DG, which was two gaskets glued together, was thicker than the LS gasket and the thicker material was expected to elicit a greater creep characteristics. The second situation of using two gaskets together by installing an LS gasket without removing the installed gasket is not allowed by the ASME Codes. However, by demonstrating the creep history of such a gasket arrangement it could be considered as an option that could possibly seal a connection while significantly reducing operational down time and personnel risk. Forty tests were conducted, and the overall results demonstrate the initial applied force and how the gasket changes with time. The change in sealing force, in terms of torque, was then measured to obtain a force history as the gaskets creep. This report documents the results of those tests as well as the method used to perform the tests.

Pull Force Evaluation of CCS Insulated End Caps

Insulated end caps installed on DC pins of Combined Charging System (CCS) inlets have been identified as potential debris sources within electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) connectors, increasing the risk of electric shock and fire hazards. Although standards such as IEC 62196-1:2022 specify mechanical pull-force requirements for these end caps, it remains unclear whether these requirements provide adequate robustness under real-world conditions. To address this concern, the National Charging Experience (ChargeX) Consortium's Hardware Task Force conducted evaluations of insulated end caps used in OEM CCS inlets. This study assesses the performance of insulated end caps used in OEM CCS inlets, specifically those installed on DC pins, using the procedures defined in IEC 62196-1:2022 (Section Sign) 26.7 and SAE J3400, supplemented by additional experimental conditioning. To ensure relevance to real-world conditions, NLR collaborated with charging network operators (CNOs) to guide the selection of charging inlet samples. Material analyses of the insulated end cap samples were conducted to confirm that the tested materials reflected the types and properties commonly observed in the field. The selected samples underwent temperature and humidity conditioning followed by pull-force testing to evaluate the end-cap integrity. Although SAE J3400 inlets were not directly tested due to limited diversity in available field data, the underlying end-cap principles between CCS and SAE J3400 are comparable, allowing the study's insights to be relevant to both technologies. Overall, this study provides a structured evaluation framework to inform potential refinements to mechanical pull-force requirements in charging standards.

Molten Salts-Driven Discovery of a Polar Mixed-Anion 3D Framework at the Nanoscale: Zn 4 Si 2 O 7 Cl 2 , Charge Transport and Photoelectrocatalytic Water Splitting

Mixed-anion compounds widen the chemical space of attainable materials compared to single anionic compounds, but the exploration of their structural diversity is limited by common synthetic paths. Especially, oxychlorides rely mainly on layered structures, which suffer from low stability during photo(electro)catalytic processes. Herein we report a strategy to design a new polar 3D tetrahedral framework with composition Zn 4 Si 2 O 7 Cl 2 . We use a molten salt medium to enable low temperature crystallization of nanowires of this new compound, by relying on tetrahedral building units present in the melt to build the connectivity of the oxychloride. These units are combined with silicon-based connectors from a non-oxidic Zintl phase to enable precise tuning of the oxygen content. This structure brings high chemical and thermal stability, as well as strongly anisotropic hole mobility along the polar axis. These features, associated with the ability to adjust the transport properties by doping, enable to tune water splitting properties for photoelectrocatalytic H 2 evolution and water oxidation. This work then paves the way to a new family of mixed-anion solids
