Affordable Vehicle Avionics Overview

Public and private launch vehicle developers are reducing the cost of propulsion for small commercial launchers, but conventional high-performance, high-reliability avionics remain the disproportionately high cost driver for launch. AVA technology performs as well or better than conventional launch vehicle avionics, but with a fraction of the recurring costs. AVA enables small launch providers to offer affordable rides to LEO to nano-satellites as primary payloads meaning, small payloads can afford to specify their own launch and orbit parameters

A segmented ion engine design for solar electric propulsion systems

A new ion engine design, called a segmented ion engine, is described which is capable of reducing the required ion source life time for small body rendezvous missions from 18,000 h to about 8,000 h. The use of SAND ion optics for the engine accelerator system makes it possible to substantially reduce the cost of demonstrating the required engine endurance. It is concluded that a flight test of a 5-kW xenon ion propulsion system on the ELITE spacecraft would enormously reduce the cost and risk of using ion propulsion on a planetary vehicle by addressing systems level issues associated with flying a spacecraft radically different from conventional planetary vehicles.

Advanced vehicle systems assessment. Volume 3: Systems assessment

The systems analyses integrate the advanced component and vehicle characteristics into conceptual vehicles with identical performance (for a given application) and evaluates the vehicles in typical use patterns. Initial and life-cycle costs are estimated and compared to conventional reference vehicles with comparable technological advances, assuming the vehicles will be in competition in the early 1990s. Electric vans, commuter vehicles, and full-size vehicles, in addition to electric/heat-engine hybrid and fuel-cell powered vehicles, are addressed in terms of performance and economics. System and subsystem recommendations for vans and two-passenger commuter vehicles are based on the economic analyses in this volume.

Cradle-to-Grave Lifecycle Analysis of Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Light-Duty Passenger Vehicles in China: Towards a Carbon-Neutral Future

Vehicle electrification is considered a pathway for on-road transportation decarbonization in China. Different from the conventional gasoline vehicles whose emissions are mainly released from vehicle tailpipes, emissions of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are from the upstream processes of electricity generation and vehicle manufacturing, thus a comprehensive lifecycle analysis and comparison of BEVs with gasoline vehicles is required to quantify the emission mitigation benefit of vehicle electrification and determine the path to a carbon-neutral future. In the study, we compare the cradle-to-grave (C2G) lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions of gasoline and electric vehicles in China and analyze the greenhouse gas emission reduction of vehicle electrification in different provinces. Results show that under the current technologies, the national average C2G GHG emissions for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) of 100 miles (i.e., 160 km) and 300 miles (i.e., 480 km) all-electric range (AER) are 231 and 279 g CO2eq/km, respectively, 22% and 5% lower than those for gasoline internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). Improving vehicle fuel efficiency by hybridizing gasoline ICEVs can effectively reduce C2G emissions to 212 g CO2eq/km. At the provincial level, C2G GHG emissions of BEVs vary according to the provincial electricity mix. In eight provinces, C2G GHG emissions of BEVs with 300 miles AER (BEV300s) are higher than those of gasoline ICEVs due to the GHG-intensive coal-based electricity mix. In the future scenario, with low carbon fuels (such as high-level bioethanol blending gasoline) and electricity decarbonization, the national average C2G emissions of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and BEV300s can be reduced to 55 and 73 g CO2eq/km, respectively. Further decrease of C2G GHG emissions relies on reducing vehicle-cycle emissions from material processing and vehicle component manufacturing.

Battery-powered bargains? Assessing electric vehicle resale value in the United States

Abstract The resale market will play a critical role in expanding plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) adoption to middle- and lower-income households. Understanding PEV depreciation trends in comparison to those of conventional gasoline vehicles (CVs) is critical for assessing PEV affordability and informing relevant policy, such as subsidies for used PEVs. We deliver comprehensive, high-resolution estimates of value retention rates at the make-model level in the United States for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and CVs using a database of 9 million used cars listed online between 2016 and 2022. While BEVs and PHEVs have depreciated at faster rates than CVs, this trend is changing, with newer model year BEVs and those with larger ranges have significantly higher retention rates than older model years with smaller ranges. Tesla BEVs are a notable exception following the opposite trend, with earlier model years holding their value better than newer model years. Subsidized BEVs in the new market are associated with lower prices for the same model in the resale market, with the $7500 federal subsidy translating to a 3% lower resale price on average. Finally, disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic have affected affordability across all vehicles, with mean listing prices rising 37% and 39% for CVs and BEVs, respectively, from January 2020 to March 2022 in inflation-adjusted 2019 dollars.

Mission and Vehicle-Level Updates for the Parallel Electric-Gas Architecture with Synergistic Utilization Scheme (PEGASUS) Concept Aircraft

NASA created the PEGASUS concept with the goal of lowering mission energy (a surrogate for operating cost) compared to other regional aircraft by leveraging electrified aircraft propulsion (EAP). Since its inception, researchers have explored multiple facets of PEGASUS in varying fidelity but have not completed a rigorous, integrated design. The goal of this memorandum is to provide an updated design using recent studies and improved methods. This memorandum explores the initial vehicle concept and concept of operations, while considering ways to improve both the mission concept of operations and the integrated vehicle-level performance. Additionally, the design and analysis methodologies for EAP-enabled aircraft concepts are improved in several areas. This research incorporates new propulsion-airframe integration and wing weight surrogates to model the impacts of wingtip propulsors on the configuration. Detailed weight and balance calculations enable calculating dynamic stability and flight qualities within the conceptual design environment. Ultimately, the vehicle is optimized to reduce "well-to-wake" equivalent CO2, CO2e, rather than minimizing either fuel (or total energy) consumption or maximum takeoff weight. Using fuel/energy or takeoff weight leads to conflicting optima for hybrid-electric aircraft. Two aircraft are developed to provide points of comparison for PEGASUS: an advanced conventional turboprop vehicle and a hybrid-electric variant. The results show that the PEGASUS concept can reduce CO2e relative to the advanced turboprop or a hybrid-electric propulsion architecture, albeit with an increase in maximum takeoff weight. PEGASUS's maximum takeoff weight is 55% heavier than the advanced conventional turboprop but releases 18% less CO2e for a 400 nmi mission. Over the same mission, PEGASUS's maximum takeoff weight is 47% heavier than the comparator hybrid-electric vehicle but releases 12% less CO2e. This study shows that the PEGASUS configuration reduces CO2e through its use of wingtip propulsors and that its benefit is not solely a result of switching to a hybrid-electric propulsion architecture. PEGASUS achieves this reduction in CO2e while maintaining satisfactory Level 1 or 2 flight qualities for all of its longitudinal- and lateral-directional modes.

Ballistic mode Mercury orbiter missions.

The MVM'73 Mercury flyby mission will initiate exploration of this unique planet. No firm plans for follow-on investigations have materialized due to the difficult performance requirements of the next logical step, an orbiter mission. Previous investigations of ballistic mode flight opportunities have indicated requirements for a Saturn V class launch vehicle. Consequently, most recent effort has been oriented to use of solar electric propulsion. More comprehensive study of the ballistic flight mode utilizing Venus gravity-assist has resulted in identification of timely high-performance mission opportunities compatible with programmed launch vehicles and conventional spacecraft propulsion technologies. A likely candidate for an initial orbiter mission is a 1980 opportunity which offers net orbiter spacecraft mass of about 435 kg with the Titan IIIE/Centaur launch vehicle and single stage solid propulsion for orbit insertion.

Advanced Launch System Multi-Path Redundant Avionics Architecture Analysis and Characterization

The objective of the Multi-Path Redundant Avionics Suite (MPRAS) program is the development of a set of avionic architectural modules which will be applicable to the family of launch vehicles required to support the Advanced Launch System (ALS). To enable ALS cost/performance requirements to be met, the MPRAS must support autonomy, maintenance, and testability capabilities which exceed those present in conventional launch vehicles. The multi-path redundant or fault tolerance characteristics of the MPRAS are necessary to offset a reduction in avionics reliability due to the increased complexity needed to support these new cost reduction and performance capabilities and to meet avionics reliability requirements which will provide cost-effective reductions in overall ALS recurring costs. A complex, real-time distributed computing system is needed to meet the ALS avionics system requirements. General Dynamics, Boeing Aerospace, and C.S. Draper Laboratory have proposed system architectures as candidates for the ALS MPRAS. The purpose of this document is to report the results of independent performance and reliability characterization and assessment analyses of each proposed candidate architecture and qualitative assessments of testability, maintainability, and fault tolerance mechanisms. These independent analyses were conducted as part of the MPRAS Part 2 program and were carried under NASA Langley Research Contract NAS1-17964, Task Assignment 28.
