Investigations using data from LANDSAT-2

The author has identified the following significant results. New lands for forestation were set aside in the coastal area of Bangladesh, based on LANDSAT mosaics (Chittagong - 195,000 acres, Noakhali - 450,000 acres, Barisal - 360,000 acres, and Patuakhali - 225,000 acres). LANDSAT imageries were used for identification of drainage patterns in both the old and and new Comilla district.

Investigations using data from LANDSAT-2

The author has identified the following significant results. LANDSAT imageries of Mirpur area of Dacca district were used in connection with surveys for black plastic clay. The imageries showed the broad pattern of small valleys cutting into Madhupur clay. Land use maps of Haor areas of Sylhet and Mymensingh districts were prepared. As a test case, two thana areas, namely Nickley and Astogram, were classified in different categories such as crop, settlement, and water. It does not show much agreement with the Agriculture Dept.'s statistics.

Investigations using data from LANDSAT-2

The author has identified the following significant results. A land use map was prepared of Dacca-Narayanganj-Demra area on a scale of 1:50,000. LANDSAT imageries of Dinajpur and Rangpur districts were studied. The difference between the exposed Pleistocene red clay, this clay under alluvial cover, and recent alluvium were noted. Different types of soils, crops, etc. were delineated on the ERTS imagery.

Investigations using data from LANDSAT 2

The author has identified the following significant results. Ground truth data collected in coastal areas confirm the sedimentation base line at five fathom depth and less. Forestry ground truth at Supati in Sunderbasn was found to conform with stratifications in aerial photos and in some satellite imagery.

An astrophysics data program investigation of a synoptic study of quasar continua

A summary of the program is presented. The major product of the program, an atlas of quasar energy distributions, is presented in the appendices along with papers written as a result of this research. The topics covered in the papers include: (1) accurate galactic N(sub h) values toward quasars and active galactic nuclei (AGN); (2) weak bump quasars; (3) millimeter measurements of hard x ray selected active galaxies- implications for the nature of the continuous spectrum; (3) persistence and change in the soft x ray spectrum of the quasar PG1211+143; (4) the soft x ray excess in einstein quasar spectra; and (5) EXOSAT x ray spectra of quasars.

Meteoroid and debris special investigation group data acquisition procedures

The entire LDEF spacecraft was examined by M&D SIG for impact (i.e., craters greater than or = 0.5 mm and penetrations greater than or = 0.3 mm in diameter) and related features (e.g., debris, secondaries). During the various detailed surveys conducted at NASA Kennedy, approx. 5,000 impact related features were photodocumented, and their locations measured and recorded; an additional approx. 30,000 smaller features were counted. The equipment and techniques used by the M&D SIG permitted the determination and recording of the locations and diameters of the 5,000 imaged features. A variety of experimental and LDEF structural hardware was acquired by the M&D SIG and is presently being examined and curated at NASA Johnson.

Application of Satellite and Ground-based Data to Investigate the UV Radiative Effects of Australian Aerosols

An understanding of the effect of aerosols on biologically- and photochemically-active UV radiation reaching the Earth's surface is important for many ongoing climate, biophysical, and air pollution studies. In particular, estimates of the UV characteristics of the most common Australian aerosols will be valuable inputs to UV Index forecasts, air quality studies, and assessments of the impact of regional environmental changes. By analyzing climatological distributions of Australian aerosols we have identified sites where co-located ground-based UV-B and ozone measurements were available during episodes of relatively high aerosol activity. Since at least June 2003, surface UV global irradiance spectra (285-450 nm) have been measured routinely at Darwin and Alice Springs in Australia by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM). Using colocated sunphotometer measurements at Darwin and Alice Springs, we identified several episodes of relatively high aerosol activity. Aerosol air mass types were analyzed from sunphotometer-derived angstrom parameter, MODIS fire maps and MISR aerosol property retrievals. To assess aerosol effects we compared the measured UV irradiances for aerosol-loaded and clear-sky conditions with each other and with irradiances simulated using the libRadtran radiative transfer model for aerosol-free conditions. We found that for otherwise similar atmospheric conditions, smoke aerosols over Darwin reduced the surface UV irradiance by as much as 40-50% at 290-300 nm and 20-25% at 320-400 nm near active fires (aerosol optical depth, AOD, at 500 nm approximately equal to 0.6). Downwind of fires, the smoke aerosols over Darwin reduced the surface irradiance by 15-25% at 290-300 nm and approximately 10% at 320-350 nm (AOD at 500 nm approximately equal to 0.2). The effect of smoke increased with decrease of wavel strongest in the UV-B. The aerosol attenuation factors calculated for the selected cases suggest smoke over Darwin has an effect on surface 340-380 nm irradiances that is comparable to that produced by smoke over Sub-Saharan Africa. Dust activity was very low at Alice Springs during 2004, therefore we were not able to identify strong dust events to fully assess the UVeffect of dust. For the cases studied, smoke aerosols seem to produce a stronger reduction in surface UV irradiances than dust aerosols.

Investigation of Data Fusion Applied to Health Monitoring of Wind Turbine Drive train Components

The research described was performed on diagnostic tools used to detect damage to dynamic mechanical components in a wind turbine gearbox. Different monitoring technologies were evaluated by collecting vibration and oil debris data from tests performed on a "healthy" gearbox and a damaged gearbox in a dynamometer test stand located at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The damaged gearbox tested was removed from the field after experiencing component damage due to two losses of oil events and was retested under controlled conditions in the dynamometer test stand. Preliminary results indicate oil debris and vibration can be integrated to assess the health of the wind turbine gearbox.

Drogue performance evaluation. Part 1: Data acquisition

Surface buoy/subsurface drogue drag coupling was investigated. Data acquisition methods and techniques derived from several experimental cruises on the Chesapeake Bay are presented. Four buoys were utilized: three coupled to steel plates rigidly attached to each other at right angles and at various depths; and one spar type that did not require drag plates. Data from these surface floats and the drogue depth combinations were processed. Errors in tracking the surface buoys are discussed.

Solar Maximum Mission

The paper considers the objectives of the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM), and describes its spacecraft, the scientific planning, the observing program, and the guest investigator programs. The SMM observatory will be injected into a circular orbit with an altitude of 574 km and it is designed for a minimum of one year of operational life; its observing program is directed at the physics of solar flares, and includes studies of thermalization, the nature of electron acceleration, the flare energy budget, and the flare decay. Finally, the SMM Guest Investigator program is discussed, including ground-based synoptic and atomic data investigations and SMM data interpretation.
