Design parameters for a stereoptic television system based on direct vision depth perception cues

Remotely controlled systems which use television for visual feedback require that depth cues be available to the operator. A number of techniques have been developed to provide stereoptic video. An analysis of parameters of such systems as related to the depth cues of convergence and retinal disparity was carried out. Parameter requirements were determined for the provision of natural and exaggerated stereoptic cues and expressions were developed for range resolution limits based on the retinal disparity threshold. An empirical study was conducted using a stereoptic video system to determine threshold values

Thematic mapper design parameter investigation

This study simulated the multispectral data sets to be expected from three different Thematic Mapper configurations, and the ground processing of these data sets by three different resampling techniques. The simulated data sets were then evaluated by processing them for multispectral classification, and the Thematic Mapper configuration, and resampling technique which provided the best classification accuracy were identified.

The effects of some design parameters of an isolated rotor on inlet flow distortions

A study of the effects of rotor-blade geometry, steady loading, and distortion wavelength on the distortion flow field upstream and downstream of an unstalled isolated rotor shows that the attenuation of the distortion as it passes through the rotor is a function of the blade stagger angle and the distortion-reduced frequency or the ratio of rotor blade spacing to the distortion wavelength. Maximum attenuation occurs when this ratio is 0.5 and increases with increasing stagger angle. Little influence of rotor incidence angle or steady loading was observed.

Design parameters for flow energizers

One of the most significant uses of flow energizers, which are small highly swept strakes mounted immediately above a lifting surface, is in flow control over regions where a lifting surface is joined to another body, such as a fuselage or nacelle. In the presently reported systematic wind tunnel test study of flow energizers, 14 different geometric configurations using a 75-deg sweep flow energizer were tested on a light twin-engine general aviation aircraft model. It is found that cambered flow energizers perform better than their flat counterparts. All but two of the energizer installations developed lower L/D at cruise angles of attack, lower maximum lift coefficients, and lower stall angles of attack than the baseline model.

System design parameter study for Shuttle Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF)

SIRTF is a high-sensitivity, cooled astronomical telescope operating from 2 to 1000 microns. The techniques used in analyzing the sensitivity of the SIRTF system performance to several technical issues are presented. Lowering the telescope temperature to near 4K is found to produce margin in several areas. A refined observing requirements model relieves the hardware performance requirements, and identifies extended source size/observing strategy as an important system specification. Other major conclusions are presented.

Correlation Between Material Properties of Ferroelectric Thin Films and Design Parameters for Microwave Device Applications: Modeling Examples and Experimental Verification

The application of thin ferroelectric films for frequency and phase agile components is the topic of interest of many research groups worldwide. Consequently, proof-of-concepts (POC) of different tunable microwave components using either (HTS, metal)/ferroelectric thin film/dielectric heterostructures or (thick, thin) film "flip-chip" technology have been reported. Either as ferroelectric thin film characterization tools or from the point of view of circuit implementation approach, both configurations have their respective advantages and limitations. However, we believe that because of the progress made so far using the heterostructure (i.e., multilayer) approach, and due to its intrinsic features such as planar configuration and monolithic integration, a study on the correlation of circuit geometry aspects and ferroelectric material properties could accelerate the insertion of this technology into working systems. In this paper, we will discuss our study performed on circuits based on microstrip lines at frequencies above 10 GHz, where the multilayer configuration offers greater ease of insertion due to circuit's size reduction. Modeled results of relevant circuit parameters such as the characteristic impedance, effective dielectric constant, and attenuation as a function of ferroelectric film's dielectric constant, tans, and thickness, will be presented for SrTiO3 and Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 ferroelectric films. A comparison between the modeled and experimental data for some of these parameters will be presented.
