Performance Evaluation and Loss Modeling of WBG Devices based on a Novel Double-Pulse Test Method for Current Source Inverter

Careful measurements of the power device characteristics are necessary to accurately estimate a power converter's losses and efficiency. The conventional double-pulse test (DPT) circuit is a well-known method to implement this laboratory characterization of power devices and power modules. However, the switching characteristics of a power device depend on the power electronics circuit in which it is connected as well as the power circuit's physical layout, in addition to the device's internal structure. Hence, the conventional DPT circuit configuration, which is tailored for a standard voltage-source inverter (VSI), is not well-suited for a current-source inverter (CSI). This paper demonstrates a previously-proposed CSI-based DPT measurement technique that is appropriate for normal CSI operation. The characteristics of SiC MOSFETs and series-connected SiC Schottky diodes used in a CSI are measured using this improved technique while taking temperature effects into account to yield more accurate loss predictions. The CSI losses, including the switching and conduction losses of SiC MOSFETs and SiC Schottky diodes, have been modeled using this approach. The total CSI losses and efficiency have been estimated based on the CSI DPT results and loss models.

H2@Scale CRADA: CA Research Consort. (Ref. Station, Fueling Perf. Test Device, Station Cap Model)

Heavy-duty (HD) hydrogen stations are an essential part of building a clean energy infrastructure by lowering greenhouse gas emissions and criteria pollutants from the trucking industry. Clean fuel at HD stations also supports energy, environmental, and social justice by preventing pollution near the stations and on truck routes while strengthening U.S. manufacturing and providing pathways to private sector uptake. The goal of the CA Research Consortium is to continue the research partnership between national laboratories, DOE, and California public agencies for the advancement of hydrogen fueling infrastructure for HD vehicles. This cooperative work directly impacts California's transition to Zero Emission Trucks and will provide tools and information that lead to more efficient design, acceptance, and commissioning of these larger capacity, higher flow rate stations serving HD hydrogen trucks such as class 8 trucks in long haul applications.

A perspective on the electro-thermal co-design of ultra-wide bandgap lateral devices

Fundamental research and development of ultra-wide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductor devices are under way to realize next-generation power conversion and wireless communication systems. Devices based on aluminum gallium nitride (AlxGa1-xN, x is the Al composition), ..beta..-phase gallium oxide (..beta..-Ga2O3), and diamond give promise to the development of power switching devices and radio frequency power amplifiers with higher performance and efficiency than commercial wide bandgap semiconductor devices based on gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC). However, one of the most critical challenges for the successful deployment of UWBG device technologies is to overcome adverse thermal effects that impact the device performance and reliability. Overheating of UWBG devices originates from the projected high power density operation and poor intrinsic thermal properties of AlxGa1-xN and ..beta..-Ga2O3. This Perspective delineates the need and process for the "electro-thermal co-design" of laterally configured UWBG electronic devices and provides a comprehensive review of current state-of-the-art thermal characterization methods, device thermal modeling practices, and both device- and package-level thermal management solutions.

Development of polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography imaging platform and metrics to quantify electrostimulation-induced peripheral nerve injury in vivo in a small animal model

Neuromodulation devices are rapidly evolving for the treatment of neurological diseases and conditions. Injury from implantation or long-term use without obvious functional losses is often only detectable through terminal histology. New technologies are needed that assess the peripheral nervous system (PNS) under normal and diseased or injured conditions. We aim to demonstrate an imaging and stimulation platform that can elucidate the biological mechanisms and impacts of neurostimulation in the PNS and apply it to the sciatic nerve to extract imaging metrics indicating electrical overstimulation. A sciatic nerve injury model in a 15-rat cohort was observed using a newly developed imaging and stimulation platform that can detect electrical overstimulation effects with polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography. The sciatic nerve was electrically stimulated using a custom-developed nerve holder with embedded electrodes for 1 h, followed by a 1-h recovery period, delivered at above-threshold Shannon model k-values in experimental groups: sham control (SC, n = 5, 0.0 mA / 0 Hz), stimulation level 1 (SL1, n = 5, 3.4 mA / 50 Hz, and k = 2.57), and stimulation level 2 (SL2, n = 5, 6.8 mA / 100 Hz, and k = 3.17). The stimulation and imaging system successfully captured study data across the cohort. When compared to a SC after a 1-week recovery, the fascicle closest to the stimulation lead showed an average change of +4 % / – 309 % (SL1/SL2) in phase retardation and –79 % / – 148 % in optical attenuation relative to SC. Analysis of immunohistochemistry (IHC) shows a +1 % / – 36 % difference in myelin pixel counts and –13 % / + 29 % difference in axon pixel counts, and an overall increase in cell nuclei pixel count of +20 % / + 35 % . These metrics were consistent with IHC and hematoxylin/eosin tissue section analysis. The poststimulation changes observed in our study are manifestations of nerve injury and repair, specifically degeneration and angiogenesis. Optical imaging metrics quantify these processes and may help evaluate the safety and efficacy of neuromodulation devices.

Coupled model for liquid lithium plasma facing components

Numerical analysis provides the design choice and operating window of liquid metal Plasma Facing Components (PFC) concepts. Coupled analysis of boundary plasma together with the surrounding boundary structures is required. Here, to achieve this goal, PPPL is developing a comprehensive multi-physics model for modeling of PFCs in fusion devices. The model includes the fluid-kinetic code SOLPS-ITER and the flow and heat transfer code CFX from ANSYS. SOLPS-ITER was augmented with a liquid metal boundary condition algorithm, allowing direct two-way coupling of the plasma analysis with the two-dimensional analytical slab flow model which includes heat convection in the liquid metal PFC. The target heat flux resulting from this coupled analysis is used as a boundary condition for detailed 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Magneto Hydro Dynamics (MHD) and heat transfer analysis. A new formulation of MHD equations is introduced in the numerical procedure ensuring current conservation of the discretized equations. Results of the 3D analysis are used for final validation of the coupled model. A PFC design where a porous wall is used to stabilize the liquid metal surface, while MHD drive is used to push the liquid metal flow inside the PFC, will be investigated in the regimes where vapor shielding is created for enhanced volumetric plasma heat dissipation.

Spatial profiles of photon chemical potential in near-field thermophotovoltaic cells

Emitted photons stemming from the radiative recombination of electron–hole pairs carry chemical potential in radiative energy converters. This luminescent effect can substantially alter the local net photogeneration in near-field thermophotovoltaic cells. Several assumptions involving the luminescent effect are commonly made in modeling photovoltaic devices; in particular, the photon chemical potential is assumed to be zero or a constant prescribed by the bias voltage. The significance of photon chemical potential depends upon the emitter temperature, the semiconductor properties, and the injection level. Hence, these assumptions are questionable in near-field thermophotovoltaic devices with nanoscale separation distances between the emitter and the cell. In the present work, an iterative solver that combines fluctuational electrodynamics with the drift-diffusion model is developed to tackle the coupled photon and charge transport problem, enabling the determination of the spatial profile of photon chemical potential beyond the detailed balance approach. Here, the difference between the results obtained by allowing the photon chemical potential to vary spatially and by assuming a constant value demonstrates the limitations of the conventional approaches. This study is critically important for performance evaluation of near-field thermophotovoltaic systems with nanoscale vacuum gaps.

Nanosecond Transient Validation of Surge Arrester Models to Predict Electromagnetic Pulse Response

The impact of high-altitude electromagnetic pulse events on the electric grid is not fully understood, and validated modeling of mitigations, such as lightning surge arresters (LSAs) is necessary to predict the propagation of very fast transients on the grid. Experimental validation of high frequency models for surge arresters is an active area of research. Further, this article serves to experimentally validate a previously defined ZnO LSA model using four metal-oxide varistor pucks and nanosecond scale pulses to measure voltage and current responses. The SPICE circuit models of the pucks showed good predictability when compared to the measured arrester response when accounting for a testbed inductance of approximately 100 nH. Additionally, the comparatively high capacitance of low-profile arresters show a favorable response to high-speed transients that indicates the potential for effective electromagnetic pulse mitigation with future materials design.

Heavy Duty Hydrogen: Reference Station, Fueling Performance Test Device Concepts, and Station Capacity Model (CRADA Final Report)

This project will provide valuable information on (1) reference station design, (2) exploration of design concepts for a fueling performance test device, and (3) modeling of station capacity. The work applies to heavy-duty (HD) hydrogen fueling stations with large dispensing capacity and high flowrates servicing HD hydrogen trucks such as class 8 trucks in long haul applications. Additionally, a 4th area will provide near-real-time verification of fuel quality with on-site hydrogen contaminant detectors (HCDs) for use at both light-duty (LD) and HD stations. The work leverages national lab capabilities including staff and equipment at SNL, NLR, and ANL with collaboration and funding cost share from California agencies (CEC, SCAQMD, and GO-Biz). This project will provide tools and information that lead to more efficient design, acceptance, and commissioning of these larger capacity, higher flowrate stations serving HD applications. The HCD work will benefit both LD and HD stations. Note: The 4th area (HCD) mentioned above continued outside of this CRADA and will not be included in this report. There are no tasks included in this CRADA for HCD and the summary text for it should have been removed prior to this CRADA contract execution but remained in error and is included here for completeness.

Identifying Disinformation Using Rhetorical Devices in Natural Language Models

Foreign disinformation campaigns are strategically organized, extended efforts using disinformation – false or misleading information deliberately placed by an adversary – to achieve some goal. Disinformation campaigns pose severe threats to our nation’s security by misinforming decision makers and negatively influencing their actions when they are operating on limited amounts of evidence. Current efforts rely on subject matter experts to manually identify disinformation, or on computers and traditional natural language processing algorithms to identify patterns in data to calculate the probability that something is disinformation or not. While both have their merits and successes, subject matter experts are unable to keep up with the high volumes of global information and traditional natural language algorithms do not do well in identifying “why” something is disinformation or not. Our hypothesis is that we can identify disinformation by looking at the way someone speaks, in the rhetorical devices they use. We have curated and annotated a dataset designed for multiple natural language processing tasks, but specifically useful for disinformation detection algorithms.

Arsenic Doping of Polycrystalline CdSeTe Devices for Microsecond Life-times with High Carrier Concentrations

We report seminal advances in fabrication and understanding of group V (As) doped thin-film polycrystalline CdTe-based solar cells. The devices are fabricated using a novel approach, by sublimating layers of CdSeTe and CdSeTe:As. This new method allowed us to achieve minority carrier lifetime of over 1 μs, carrier concentration of more than 5×l0 15 cc -1 and external radiative efficiency of over 2 % in a device configuration. We find an increase in open-circuit voltage when comparing As-doped, Cu-doped and undoped devices. The choice of CdSeTe instead of a CdTe-only absorber has been explained using first-principle density functional theory model. A SCAPS device model is used to analyze the potential causes for lower open-circuit voltage.

TokaMaker: An open-source time-dependent Grad-Shafranov tool for the design and modeling of axisymmetric fusion devices

Here, in this paper, we present a new static and time-dependent MagnetoHydroDynamic (MHD) equilibrium code, TokaMaker, for axisymmetric configurations of magnetized plasmas, based on the well-known Grad-Shafranov equation. This code utilizes finite element methods on an unstructured triangular grid to enable capturing accurate machine geometry and simple mesh generation from engineering-like descriptions of present and future devices. The new code is designed for ease of use without sacrificing capability and speed through a combination of Python, Fortran, and C/C++ components. A detailed description of the numerical methods of the code, including a novel formulation of the boundary conditions for free-boundary equilibria, and validation of the implementation of those methods using both analytic test cases and cross-code validation is shown. Results show expected convergence across tested polynomial degree for analytic and cross-code test cases.
