Investigation and Evaluation of Advanced Spectrum Management Concepts for Aeronautical Communications

With the emergence of new aerial vehicles into the airspace and the continued growth of aviation operations, there will be an increasing demand for voice and data communications within the National Airspace System (NAS). The continued use of existing VHF and UHF frequency allocations is not a sustainable approach, and as a result, a new spectrum management solution is required to support future mission needs. The proposed spectrum management concepts leverage modern advancements such as artificial intelligence (AI) and big data to dynamically optimize the spectrum utilization based on the predicted communications demand throughout the airspace. This technical investigation considers both air-ground and air-air communications networks, and can be applied to both existing applications such as the air traffic control (ATC) system, as well as future applications, such as the emerging Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). To support the evaluation of the proposed concepts and technologies, a modeling and simulation capability is currently under development and will continue to evolve to support new and advanced airspace applications. It is anticipated that this proposed spectrum concept will better serve the spectrum needs of future NAS applications.

Fixed-order dynamic compensation through optimal projection

This paper reviews a formulation for the design of fixed-order dynamic compensation for flexible mechanical systems which is based upon explicit optimality conditions derived under the minimum data/maximum entropy stochastic modelling approach. The optimality conditions give rise to the novel concept of "optimal projection' which provides significant insight with regard to the compensator structure and permits earlier, more restricted and/or ad hoc design schemes to be seen as special cases of the present formulation.

Multiobjective Optimization of Low-Energy Trajectories Using Optimal Control on Dynamical Channels

We introduce a computational method to design efficient low-energy trajectories by extracting initial solutions from dynamical channels formed by invariant manifolds, and improving these solutions through variational optimal control. We consider trajectories connecting two unstable periodic orbits in the circular restricted 3-body problem (CR3BP). Our method leverages dynamical channels to generate a range of solutions, and approximates the areto front for impulse and time of flight through a multiobjective optimization of these solutions based on primer vector theory. We demonstrate the application of our method to a libration orbit transfer in the Earth-Moon system.

The uncertainty threshold principle - Fundamental limitations of optimal decision making under dynamic uncertainty

The fundamental limitations of the optimal control of dynamic systems with random parameters are analyzed by studying a scalar linear-quadratic optimal control example. It is demonstrated that optimum long-range decision making is possible only if the dynamic uncertainty (quantified by the means and covariances of the random parameters) is below a certain threshold. If this threshold is exceeded, there do not exist optimum decision rules. This phenomenon is called the 'uncertainty threshold principle'. The implications of this phenomenon to the field of modelling, identification, and adaptive control are discussed.

The uncertainty threshold principle - Some fundamental limitations of optimal decision making under dynamic uncertainty

This note shows that the optimal control of dynamic systems with uncertain parameters has certain limitations. In particular, by means of a simple scalar linear-quadratic optimal control example, it is shown that the infinite horizon solution does not exist if the parameter uncertainty exceeds a certain quantifiable threshold; we call this the uncertainty threshold principle. The philosophical and design implications of this result are discussed.

Adaptive Control for Linear Uncertain Systems with Unmodeled Dynamics Revisited via Optimal Control Modification

This paper presents the optimal control modification for linear uncertain plants. The Lyapunov analysis shows that the modification parameter has a limiting value depending on the nature of the uncertainty. The optimal control modification exhibits a linear asymptotic property that enables it to be analyzed in a linear time invariant framework for linear uncertain plants. The linear asymptotic property shows that the closed-loop plants in the limit possess a scaled input-output mapping. Using this property, we can derive an analytical closed-loop transfer function in the limit as the adaptive gain tends to infinity. The paper revisits the Rohrs counterexample problem that illustrates the nature of non-robustness of model-reference adaptive control in the presence of unmodeled dynamics. An analytical approach is developed to compute exactly the modification parameter for the optimal control modification that stabilizes the plant in the Rohrs counterexample. The linear asymptotic property is also used to address output feedback adaptive control for non-minimum phase plants with a relative degree 1.

A practical six-degree of freedom solar sail dynamics model for optimizing solar sail trajectories with torque constraints

Controlled flight of a solar sail-propelled spacecraft ('sailcraft') is a six-degree-of-freedom dynamics problem. Current state-of-the-art tools that simulate and optimize the trajectories flown by sailcraft do not treat the full kinetic (i.e. force and torque-constrained) motion, instead treating a discrete history of commanded sail attitudes, and either neglecting the sail attitude motion over an integration timestep, or treating the attitude evolution kinematically with a spline or similar treatment. The present paper discusses an aspect of developing a next generation sailcraf trajectory designing optimization tool JPL, for NASA's Solar Sail Spaceflight Simulation Software (SS). The aspect discussed in an experimental approach to modeling full six-degree-of-freedom kinetic motion of a solar sail in a trajectory propagator. Early results from implementing this approach in a new trajectory propagation tool are given.

An inverse dynamics approach to trajectory optimization for an aerospace plane

An inverse dynamics approach for trajectory optimization is proposed. This technique can be useful in many difficult trajectory optimization and control problems. The application of the approach is exemplified by ascent trajectory optimization for an aerospace plane. Both minimum-fuel and minimax types of performance indices are considered. When rocket augmentation is available for ascent, it is shown that accurate orbital insertion can be achieved through the inverse control of the rocket in the presence of disturbances.

An Optimization Framework for Dynamic, Distributed Real-Time Systems

Abstract. This paper presents a model that is useful for developing resource allocation algorithms for distributed real-time systems .that operate in dynamic environments. Interesting aspects of the model include dynamic environments, utility and service levels, which provide a means for graceful degradation in resource-constrained situations and support optimization of the allocation of resources. The paper also provides an allocation algorithm that illustrates how to use the model for producing feasible, optimal resource allocations.

Biased estimation for dynamic systems.

Optimization and regulation of static and dynamic systems require good estimates of the states of the system model and the parameters of the model in the presence of input and measurement noise. A biased estimator is proposed as an alternative to the familiar best linear unbiased estimator. Depending on the value of a constant, this biased estimator can be made unbiased and is then identical to the best linear unbiased estimator, thus permitting additional freedom of choice in design and application. The sum of squared errors of this bs tmator can be less than the best linear unbiased case. An existence theorem is established and various properties are discussed.
