Selective Removal of Perfluorobutyric Acid Using an Electroactive Ion Exchanger Based on Polypyrrole@Iron Oxide on Carbon Cloth

Perfluorabutyric acid (PFBA) is one classify of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), which is applied to wide-spread industry compounds. The removal of PFBA has attracted considerable scientific interest in recent decades because it caused environmental pollutions and human diseases. For removing PFASs from wastewater, the adsorption method has been commonly used for the remediation of PFASs. However, it is usually limited by the inevitable “secondary waster” produced in this treatment process. In this work, PFBA can be removed effectively by synergizing the electrically switched ion exchange (ESIX) and a novel nanostructured ion exchanger. Herein, the nanostructured ion exchanger is designed by coating polypyrrole (PPy) @ Fe 2 O 3 nanoneedle on carbon cloth (PPy@Fe 2 O 3 NN-CC). Overall, results show that PPy@Fe 2 O 3 NN-CC film enhances ion exchange speed and efficiency, which endures its high-capacity adsorption ability and rapid regeneration property, thereby reducing secondary waste. Moreover, ESIX based on PPy@Fe 2 O 3 NN-CC has high selectivity for adsorption of PFBA over Cl - , SO 4 2- and NO 3 - .

On the mechanism of performance improvement of electroactive polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gel actuators via conductive fillers

Abstract The electromechanical actuation of transparent plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gels with conductive fillers were studied. The effects of functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Bmim]BF 4 ) ionic liquid (IL) on both the electrical conduction and dielectric processes within PVC gels were investigated, and the differences between the two were clarified. Both CNTs and IL were shown to increase the conductivity of the gels and produce larger electromechanical transduction of a contraction actuator, but only CNTs were shown to increase the electrostatic adhesion force of the PVC gels. The addition of charge carriers to the gel via the inclusion of ILs was shown to significantly reduce the conductivity relaxation time, and the transient current upon voltage polarity reversal indicated multiple peaks corresponding to the introduction of carriers with different polarities and mobilities into the gel. This is believed to cause a screening effect, reducing the charge accumulation at the anode that is the foundational basis for PVC gels’ actuation mechanism. A recommendation for preferable conductive fillers for various applications is made.

Defying strain in the synthesis of an electroactive bilayer helicene

We report the synthesis of a bilayer chiral nanographene incorporating a [7]helicene scaffold and two perylene-diimide (PDI) subunits. Twofold visible-light-induced oxidative cyclization of a phenanthrene framework selects for the desired PDI-helicene, despite the immense strain that distinguishes this helicene from two other accessible isomers. This strain arises from the extensive intramolecular overlap of the PDI subunits, which precludes racemization, even at elevated temperatures. Relative to a smaller homologue, this PDI-helicene exhibits amplified electronic circular dichroism. It also readily and reversibly accepts four electrons electrochemically. Modifications to the core phenanthrene subunit change the fluorescence and electrochemistry of the PDI-helicene without significantly impacting its electronic circular dichroism or UV-visible absorbance.

Three-dimensional electroactive ZnO nanomesh directly derived from hierarchically self-assembled block copolymer thin films

Three-dimensional (3D) nanoarchitectures can offer enhanced material properties, such as large surface areas that amplify the structures’ interaction with environments making them useful for various sensing applications. Self-assembled block copolymers (BCPs) can readily generate various 3D nanomorphologies, but their conversion to useful inorganic materials remains one of the critical challenges against the practical application of self-assembled BCPs. This work reports the vapor-phase infiltration synthesis of optoelectrically active, 3D ZnO nanomesh architectures by combining hierarchical successive stacking of self-assembled, lamellar-phase polystyrene- block -poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS- b -P2VP) BCP thin films and a modified block-selective vapor-phase material infiltration protocol. The 3D ZnO nanomesh exhibits optoelectrical functionality, featuring stack-layer-number-dependent electrical conductance resembling the percolative transport originating from the intrinsic morphological network connectivity of the lamellar BCP pattern with symmetric block ratio. Furthermore, the results not only illustrate the first demonstration of electrical functionality based on the ZnO nanoarchitecture directly generated by the infiltration synthesis in self-assembled BCP thin films but also present a new, large-area scalable, metal oxide thin film nanoarchitecture fabrication method utilizing industry-compatible polymer solution coating and atomic layer deposition. Given the large surface area, three-dimensional porosity, and readily scalable fabrication procedures, the generated ZnO nanomesh promises potential applications as an efficient active medium in chemical and optical sensors.

Evidence for interfacial geometric interactions at metal–support interfaces and their influence on the electroactivity and stability of Pt nanoparticles

Supported metals are widely used as industrial catalysts wherein the supports affect catalytic performances remarkably through either electronic and/or geometric interactions with the metals, and/or providing interfacial synergistic sites. Herein, we observed evidence for interfacial geometric interactions (IGIs) at Pt–C interfaces through a combination of atomic-scale structural analysis, in situ X-ray absorption fine structure, and electrochemical measurements for Pt/C model systems. The IGI has a long-range attribute and affects Pt surface atoms not only at interfacial perimeters but also adjacent to interfaces. The affected Pt surface atoms are proposed to contribute enhanced activity and stability for the oxygen reduction reaction through retarding the formation of strongly adsorbed oxygenated intermediates. Our work provides some necessary information for a better understanding of support effects and catalytically active surface sites.

A study of electroactive polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gel actuators through the use of the electric modulus formalism and cyclic linear voltage sweeps

The conductivity and dielectric properties are integral to the function of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gel actuators. The frequency-dependent properties of PVC gel actuators are investigated here in terms of their impedance, permittivity, and for the first time, electric modulus. The data shows that PVC gels’ conductive properties are just as, if not more, important as their dielectric properties in electromechanical transduction applications. The electrode polarization (EP) and its impact on the impedance and dielectric spectra of PVC gels, as well as the developed asymmetric space charge at the anode, are discussed. The electric modulus and tan δ spectra are used for the fitting of Cole-Cole (CC) and Debye relaxation models for gels of varying plasticizer content. The electrostatic adhesive force for PVC gels of varying plasticizer is also measured, indicating large electrostatic adhesion (>2 N cm -2 ). A cyclic linear voltage sweep is used to clarify the dynamics of space charge within the gels. The peak current (associated with space charge development) is seen to be concurrent with the onset of mechanical deformation, showing the asymmetric charge as the origin of electromechanical transduction. Additionally, the maximum charge transferred (as measured by the integration of current over time) before space charge development is found to correlate with the electrostatic adhesive force measured for the gels, pointing to a new method of characterizing PVC gels for actuation.

Electroactive biofilms: how microbial electron transfer enables bioelectrochemical applications

Abstract Microbial biofilms are ubiquitous. In marine and freshwater ecosystems, microbe–mineral interactions sustain biogeochemical cycles, while biofilms found on plants and animals can range from pathogens to commensals. Moreover, biofouling and biocorrosion represent significant challenges to industry. Bioprocessing is an opportunity to take advantage of biofilms and harness their utility as a chassis for biocommodity production. Electrochemical bioreactors have numerous potential applications, including wastewater treatment and commodity production. The literature examining these applications has demonstrated that the cell–surface interface is vital to facilitating these processes. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the state of knowledge regarding biofilms’ role in bioprocessing. This mini-review discusses bacterial biofilm formation, cell–surface redox interactions, and the role of microbial electron transfer in bioprocesses. It also highlights some current goals and challenges with respect to microbe-mediated bioprocessing and future perspectives.

Effect of organic electroactive crystallites in a dielectric matrix on the electrical properties of a polymer dielectric

In this work, the effects of inserting chargeable α-quaterthiophene (α4T) crystallites in polystyrene (PS) multilayers used as a transistor gate and capacitor dielectric were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and confocal microscopy indicated the formation of α4T crystallites in the PS matrix. A modified saturation-regime current voltage relationship was used to estimate organic field-effect transistor (OFET) threshold voltage V TH shifting, and in turn the quantities of stored charge that were observed as a result of dielectric charging. The crystallites increased the maximum charge storage capacity as well as the charge retention capability of the dielectrics. Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) showed that charges were localized near the α4T crystallites upon charging. Trilayer experiments validated the charge retention improvement of α4T crystallite-embedded PS dielectrics. The crystallites also improved breakdown characteristics in PS used as a capacitor dielectric, suggesting their application to storage capacitors in addition to OFET logic.

Electroactive Polymers as Artificial Muscles: Capabilities, Potentials and Challenges

The low density and the relative ease of shaping made polymers highly attractive materials and they are increasingly being chosen for aerospace applications. Polymer matrix composite materials significantly impacted the construction of high performance aircraft components and structures. In recent years, the resilience characteristics of polymers made them attractive to the emerging field of inflatable structures. Balloons were used to cushion the deployment of the Mars Pathfinder lander on July 4, 1997, paving the way for the recent large number of related initiatives. Inflatable structures are now being used to construct a rover, aerial vehicles, telescopes, radar antennas, and others. Some of these applications have reached space flight experiments, whereas others are now at advanced stages of development.

Composite-Based High Performance Electroactive Polymers For Remotely Controlled Mechanical Manipulations in NASA Applications

This program supported investigation of an all-polymer percolative composite which exhibits very high dielectric constant (less than 7,000). The experimental results show that the dielectric behavior of this new class of percolative composites follows the prediction of the percolation theory and the analysis of the conductive percolation phenomena. The very high dielectric constant of the all-polymer composites which are also very flexible and possess elastic modulus not very much different from that of the insulation polymer matrix makes it possible to induce a high electromechanical response under a much reduced electric field (a strain of 2.65% with an elastic energy density of 0.18 J/cu cm can be achieved under a field of 16 MV/m). Data analysis also suggests that in these composites, the non-uniform local field distribution as well as interface effects can significantly enhance the strain responses. Furthermore, the experimental data as well as the data analysis indicate that the conduction loss in these composites will not affect the strain hysteresis.

Electrospun Electroactive Polymers for Aerospace Applications

Electrospun piezoelectric polymers are being developed for use as a component on lightweight wings for micro-air vehicles (MAV). The goal is to incorporate fibers with tailored properties to permit dynamic control and maneuverability during flight. In particular, electrospun fiber mats of two piezoelectric polymers were investigated to ascertain their potential for the MAV application. In the work reported here, the typical experimental set-up for electrospinning was modified to induce fiber orientation in the spun mats. The morphologies of the resulting fibers and fiber mats were evaluated for various experimental conditions, and a comparison between oriented and unoriented fiber mats was carried out.
