Solidification and Morphological Evolution of Al-Si Eutectics in Convector-Diffusive Conditions

The Al-Si material system is an important and has been studied for over half century with a focus on industrial applications in high strength and high conductivity alloys. A great deal of researches have been focused on controlling the morphology and hence performance through the addition of small impurities and by processing conditions. Most of the structure-property correlations are based on the post solidified micromorphology and growth conditions. This material system is unique and has been explored for heat spreader, controlling coefficient of expansion by adjusting composition of silicon and in designing composites. The Al-Si system is very interesting system for understanding the dendritic (Al-rich side) eutectic transition. Recently this system has been of great interest because of its applications in designing heat spreader, low temperature flux to grow SiC large substrates and in controlling the coefficient of expansion of Al-based alloys. We have performed extensive experiments to understand eutectic transition and to understand the morphological evolution in presence of impurities. We will discuss the results of dendritic transition into faceted long grains in convector-diffusive conditions. In this presentation we will present morphological transition in presence of carbon impurity and development of novel morphology.

The effect of thermal cycling on the structure and properties of a Co, Cr, Ni-TaC directionally solidified eutectic composite

A Co, Cr, Ni-TaC directionally solidified eutectic composite was subjected to thermal fatigue between 427-1093°C. The material suffered degradation in microstructure and elevated temperature mechanical properties. The loss in properties varied with the maximum cycling temperature and number of cycles. This behavior is attributed to the increasing solubility of the TaC in the matrix with temperature from 0.4% at room temperature to 2.2% at 1200°C. During the thermal cycling, the TaC is subjected to solution and reprecipitation which form serrations on the fibers since the easy growth planes of the TaC are not coincident with the fiber faces exposed to the matrix.

(abstract) A Brief, Selective Review of Thermal Cycling Fatigue in Eutectic Tin-Lead Solder

This paper reviews selected parts of the current literature relevant to thermo-mechanical fatigue mechanisms in eutectic tin-lead solder, and suggests a general outline to account for some observed failures. The field is found to be complex. One recent experimental study finds some failure modes to be sensitive to joint geometry. Attempts to extrapolate from test environments to service environments have had only limited success. Much work remains to be done before fatigue failures in this material can be considered as under practical control.

Vacuum chamber is remotely sealed by eutectic metal

Vacuum chamber is remotely sealed by a design using metal seal blades which are inserted into a molten eutectic metal by pressurizing an expansion bellows. The process increases allowable manipulations by improving working space and safety factors.

Eutectic fuse provides current and thermal protection under high vibration

Eutectic fuses provide current and thermal protection to an electronic system and maintain this protection under high vibration environments. The fuses are embedded within heat shrinkable sleeving which provides positive closing action under the conditions of high current or temperature.
