Discovery of a bright extended X-ray jet in RGB J1512+020A

ABSTRACT We report the discovery of a bright, extended X-ray jet in the quasar RGB J1512+020A (z = 0.22). Chandra observations show the X-ray core and 13 arcsec (∼45 kpc projected) extended emission coincident with the radio jet. The jet stands out as one of brightest X-ray jets (LX ∼ 7 × 1043 erg s−1) at low redshift (z < 0.5) discovered so far, with remarkably large X-ray to radio luminosity ratios (LX/Lr up to ∼50). We identified four main components, two unresolved knots and two extended structures, one being the jet brightest feature (JBF). All jet features are also detected in ALMA archival observations. The radio, sub-mm to X-ray spectra of the two knots can be modelled with a single synchrotron component. For the two resolved structures, the ALMA data unveil a turnover of the low-energy continuum at ∼460 GHz. External Comptonization of cosmic microwave background photons can account for the observed X-ray emission if the jet speed remains highly relativistic, with bulk motion Γbulk > 15, up to tens of kiloparsec from the core. However, the comparison with the spectral energy distribution of similar X-ray detected jets shows that the alternative hypothesis of synchrotron emission from an additional population of ultra-high-energy electrons is also possible. We report a tentative (≳2σ) optical detection of the JBF in images of the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey. If confirmed, the optical emission should be either the low-energy tail of the radiative component responsible for the X-ray emission or a third, separate component.

Influence of extended interactions on spin dynamics in one-dimensional cuprates

Quasi-one-dimensional (1D) materials provide a unique platform for understanding the importance and influence of extended interactions on the physics of strongly correlated systems due to their relative structural simplicity and the existence of powerful theoretical tools well-adapted to one spatial dimension. Recently, this was highlighted by anomalous observations in the single-particle spectral function A(q, ω) of 1D cuprate chain compounds, measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), which were explained by the presence of a long-range attractive interaction. Such an extended interaction should leave its fingerprints on other observables, notably the dynamical spin structure factor S(q, ω), measured by neutron scattering or resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Starting from a simple Hubbard Hamiltonian in 1D and using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (tDMRG) methods, we show that the presence of long-range attractive coupling, directly through an instantaneous Coulomb interaction V or retarded electron phonon (el-ph) coupling, can introduce significant spectral weight redistribution in S(q, ω) across a wide range of doping. Here, this underscores the significant impact that extended interactions can have on dynamical correlations among particles, and the importance of properly incorporating this influence in modeling. Our results demonstrate that S(q, ω) can provide a sensitive experimental constraint, which complements ARPES measurements, in identifying key interactions in 1D cuprates, beyond the standard Hubbard model.

Extending the capillary wave model to include the effect of bending rigidity: X-ray reflectivity and diffuse scattering

The surface roughness of a thin film at a liquid interface exhibits contributions of thermally excited fluctuations. This thermal roughness depends on temperature (𝑇), surface tension (𝛾), and elastic material properties, specifically the bending modulus (𝜅) of the film. A nonzero 𝜅 suppresses the thermal roughness at small length scales compared to an interface with zero 𝜅, as expressed by the power spectral density of the thermal roughness. The description of the x-ray scattering of the standard capillary wave model (CWM), which is valid for zero 𝜅, is extended to include the effect of 𝜅. The extended CWM (eCWM) provides a single analytical form for both the specular x-ray reflectivity (XRR) and the diffuse scattering around the specular reflection, and recovers the expression of the CWM at its zero 𝜅 limit. This theoretical approach enables the use of single-shot grazing incidence x-ray off-specular scattering (GIXOS) measurements for characterizing the structure of thin films on a liquid surface. The eCWM analysis approach decouples the thermal roughness factor from the surface scattering signal, providing direct access to the intrinsic surface-normal structure of the film and its bending modulus. Moreover, the eCWM facilitates the calculation of reflectivity at any desired resolution (pseudo-XRR approach). The transformation into pseudo-XRR provides the benefit of using widely available XRR software to perform GIXOS analysis. The extended range of the vertical scattering vector (𝑄 𝑧 ) available with the GIXOS pseudo-XRR approach allows for a higher spatial resolution than with conventional XRR. Experimental results are presented for various lipid systems, showing strong agreement between conventional specular XRR and pseudo-XRR methods. This agreement validates the proposed approach and highlights its utility for analyzing soft, thin films.

Imaging extended single crystal lattice distortion fields with multi-peak Bragg ptychography

Recent advances in phase-retrieval-based x-ray imaging methods have demonstrated the ability to reconstruct 3D distortion vector fields within a nanocrystal by using coherent diffraction information from multiple crystal Bragg reflections. However, these works do not provide a solution to the challenges encountered in imaging lattice distortions in crystals with significant defect content that result in phase wrapping. Moreover, these methods only apply to isolated crystals smaller than the x-ray illumination, and therefore cannot be used for imaging of distortions in extended crystals. We introduce multi-peak Bragg ptychography which addresses both challenges via an optimization framework that combines stochastic gradient descent and phase unwrapping methods for robust image reconstruction of lattice distortions and defects in extended crystals. Our work uses modern automatic differentiation toolsets so that the method is easy to extend to other settings and easy to implement in high-performance computers. This work is particularly timely given the broad interest in using the increased coherent flux in fourth-generation synchrotrons for innovative material research.

Comparison of Extended and Accelerated VOG Tests

The reprocessing of used nuclear fuel would release volatile radionuclides into the off-gas streams of a processing plant, including ¹²⁹I. The dissolver off-gas and more dilute vessel off-gas streams (VOG) must both be targeted when mitigating ¹²⁹I environmental release because each contains some amount of iodine. Iodine-129 will likely be found as elemental iodine (I₂) and methyl iodide (CH₃I) in these off-gas streams. Reduced silver-exchanged mordenite (AgZ or Ag⁰Z) has been investigated as a potential sorbent for iodine abatement and is studied here under prototypic VOG conditions. Because of the relatively low iodine abundance and high flow rates of the VOG, total iodine concentrations are expected to be in the parts per billion range. Thus, VOG experiments need to run for extended durations at low concentrations to reach sorbent saturation. Because the sorbent will be exposed to oxidizing gas streams for extended periods of time, aging effects and sorbent degradation need to be considered when designing a sorbent-based abatement system. Three sets of experiments were performed with the aim of determining how the adsorption of iodine by AgZ is affected by differing test durations and gas compositions. The first tested the capacity of sorbent aged for 8 months under a humid air stream. The second tested differences in sorbent capacity and mass transfer zone (MTZ) length during high-concentration (1200 ppb v ) CH₃I loading in a humid nitrogen gas (N₂) stream and a humid air gas stream over 28 days. The third tested sorbent capacity and MTZ length during low concentration (< 200 ppb v ) CH₃I and I₂ loading in a humid air stream over 9 months. The results of these tests suggest that AgZ capacity drops by ~50% after 1 month of aging, by ~60% after 2 months of aging, and then does not continue to decrease significantly at up to 8 months of aging. One-month aging tests that compared N₂ and air as the gas stream diluent resulted in similar maximum loading capacities and overall loading curves, indicating that the effects of aging cannot be mitigated by avoiding air as the balance gas. The 9-month extended VOG tests did not result in clear sorbent saturation at the inlet, but it can be inferred using an assumption of a maximum capacity of 45 mg I/g AgZ. Applying this assumption, then the MTZ of CH₃I is 12.8 cm, and the MTZ of I₂ is 12.4 cm. These results are similar to previous tests. Comparisons to tests completed at Idaho National Laboratory suggest that the CH₃I MTZ may be dependent on concentration. Future work should re-evaluate the design of the VOG iodine capture system with this updated data and should seek to understand fundamental characteristics of CH₃I adsorption by AgZ, such as the effect of concentration, gas velocity, and gas composition.

Technology Development for Aluminum-clad Spent Nuclear Fuel for Extended Dry Storage (Status Report)

A task group under the Spent Nuclear Fuel Working Group of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Offices of Environmental Management (EM) and Nuclear Energy (NE) identified technical challenges (“information gaps"’) to the ability to provide for safe extended (>50 years) dry storage of Aluminum-Clad Spent Nuclear Fuel (ASNF) in a report issued in 2017, An Action Plan was developed, and a task- based program was launched under the sponsorship of DOE-EM, Office of Technology Development (EMTD) in October 2018 to close the gaps and complete the technical information set needed to implement extended dry storage with confidence. This interim status report summarizes the work to date of this EMTD program to complete the technical bases and demonstrate that extended dry storage is safe and viable.

Cummins Electric Truck with Range-Extending Engine (ETREE) Project (Final Technical Report)

The Cummins Electric Truck with Range Extending Engine (ETREE) program designed, developed, and demonstrated a range extending electric vehicle that employs an electrified propulsion system installed in a class 6 commercial vehicle (Peterbilt 220). This project was relevant to industry and the greater public because at the time of the project there were two keys to widespread electrified commercial vehicle adoption yet to be realize: 1) For pure electrified vehicle adoption, battery improvements are needed: Cost must decrease, and energy density must increase. 2) Electric vehicles must overcome fleet operator risks such as: operations in cold climates, hilly terrain, or where majority of conventional trucks are replaced with electrified vehicles. In the near to medium term these adoption hurdles were address by the objectives of this project. A plug-in hybrid vehicle that could be operated in all electric mode for most of its workday optimizing the use of grid energy with the ability to supplement energy demand with the onboard range extending engine. This project’s architecture provided ability to match a conventional class 6 commercial vehicle range and performance characteristics prior to the ubiquitous adoption of battery electric vehicle charging infrastructure as well. Additionally, the vehicles produced as part of this project can be considered a prototype for a commercially viable heavily electrified commercial vehicle because most of the physical hardware used for the project is commercially available in the market today. The ETREE program met its main objectives and demonstrated 65% fuel consumption reduction as compared to a conventional class 6 vehicle while meeting performance and range expectations. This was achieved by drawing upon the strengths of the assembled team: Cummins, PACCAR, the Ohio State University, Argonne National Laboratory and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Technical Basis for Extended Dry Storage of Aluminum-Clad Spent Nuclear Fuel

This report addresses previously identified technical knowledge and technology gaps and presents the key findings of the multiyear, EMTD-funded research efforts with the goal of evaluating whether ASNF can be safely stored dry for many decades and whether changes to existing ASNF management practices are appropriate. The findings formulate the technical basis for the extended dry storage of ASNF, leading to the main conclusion: All completed work to close the identified knowledge gaps on extended (>50 years) ASNF dry storage supports the conclusion that extended ASNF dry storage is both safe and viable.

Extended chain crystals of linear high polymers.

Studies of extended chain crystals carried out over the last 10 years have been reviewed. Crystallization in an extended chain conformation is possible either by chain folding followed by extension in the solid state, or by crystallization during polymerization. The equilibrium isometric crystal habit is only rarely exhibited. Crystals which derive from folded chain macroconformation by subsequent chain extension have lamellar habit, crystals which crystallize during polymerization often show fibrillar habit because of nucleation limitation. The morphology of extended chain crystals is analogous to folded chain crystals. Their properties have been shown to be close to the extrapolated equilibrium properties.

Analysis of extended-duration sortie missions

Many Spacelab payloads could significantly benefit from an extension of the duration of sortie missions beyond the nominal seven days. However, longer sortie missions require the addition of Shuttle or Spacelab mission extension kits, which results in a significant reduction in allowable scientific payload weight. An analysis of extended-duration sortie missions was performed. Payload requirements and detailed descriptions of Shuttle and Spacelab baselines were the primary inputs to the analysis. Payload benefits from extended-duration missions were established by surveying payload requirements and interviewing discipline specialists. The net weight available to Spacelab payloads as a function of mission length was derived. The impacts on Shuttle and Spacelab to provide extended-duration mission support and the corresponding impacts on payloads were established. Several alternatives to baseline systems and operations were studied as possibilities to increase available payload weight.

On implementation of the extended interior penalty function

The extended interior penalty function formulation is implemented. A rational method for determining the transition between the interior and extended parts is set forth. The formulation includes a straightforward method for avoiding design points with some negative components, which are physically meaningless in structural analysis. The technique, when extended to problems involving parametric constraints, can facilitate closed form integration of the penalty terms over the most important parts of the parameter interval. The method lends itself well to the use of approximation concepts, such as design variable linking, constraint deletion and Taylor series expansions of response quantities in terms of design variables. Examples demonstrating the algorithm, in the context of planar orthogonal frames subjected to ground motion, are included.

Three-dimensional structure of the extended solar magnetic field and the sunspot cycle variation in cosmic ray intensity

A principal cause for the eleven-year sunspot cycle variation in the primary cosmic ray intensity observed at earth may be a variation in the solid angle of the heliosphere occupied by the extended solar polar magnetic field. Galactic cosmic rays have relatively easy access to the inner solar system through the regular extended solar polar fields, and relatively difficult access through the irregular extended solar sector structure fields.

Extending radiative transfer models by use of Bayes rule

This paper presents a procedure that extends some existing radiative transfer modeling techniques to problems in atmospheric science where curvature and layering of the medium and dynamic range and angular resolution of the signal are important. Example problems include twilight and limb scan simulations. Techniques that are extended include successive orders of scattering, matrix operator, doubling, Gauss-Seidel iteration, discrete ordinates and spherical harmonics. The procedure for extending them is based on Bayes' rule from probability theory.

An extended Kalman-Bucy filter for atmospheric temperature profile retrieval with a passive microwave sounder

An extended Kalman-Bucy filter has been implemented for atmospheric temperature profile retrievals from observations made using the Scanned Microwave Spectrometer (SCAMS) instrument carried on the Nimbus 6 satellite. This filter has the advantage that it requires neither stationary statistics in the underlying processes nor linear production of the observed variables from the variables to be estimated. This extended Kalman-Bucy filter has yielded significant performance improvement relative to multiple regression retrieval methods. A multi-spot extended Kalman-Bucy filter has also been developed in which the temperature profiles at a number of scan angles in a scanning instrument are retrieved simultaneously. These multi-spot retrievals are shown to outperform the single-spot Kalman retrievals.

Concept definition for an extended duration orbiter ECLSS

Extending the seven-day Shuttle Orbiter baseline mission requires an evaluation of the Environmental Control and Life Support (ECLS) System in order to determine those changes necessary or desirable so that the Orbiter payload capability will not be seriously compromised. The ECLSS requirements and subsystem options for extended duration Orbiter missions are defined. Each major ECLS subsystem was examined, and potential methods of extending the mission capability were studied. The mission evaluated most extensively for this effort was a 30 day mission with a crew size of seven men. However, missions up to 90 days duration with crew sizes of three to ten men were also examined.

Extended duration Orbiter life support definition

Extending the baseline seven-day Orbiter mission to 30 days or longer and operating with a solar power module as the primary source for electrical power requires changes to the existing environmental control and life support (ECLS) system. The existing ECLS system imposes penalties on longer missions which limit the Orbiter capabilities and changes are required to enhance overall mission objectives. Some of these penalties are: large quantities of expendables, the need to dump or store large quantities of waste material, the need to schedule fuel cell operation, and a high landing weight penalty. This paper presents the study ground rules and examines the limitations of the present ECLS system against Extended Duration Orbiter mission requirements. Alternate methods of accomplishing ECLS functions for the Extended Duration Orbiter are discussed. The overall impact of integrating these options into the Orbiter are evaluated and significant Orbiter weight and volume savings with the recommended approaches are described.

An extended BET format for La RC shuttle experiments: Definition and development

A program for shuttle post-flight data reduction is discussed. An extended Best Estimate Trajectory (BET) file was developed. The extended format results in some subtle changes to the header record. The major change is the addition of twenty-six words to each data record. These words include atmospheric related parameters, body axis rate and acceleration data, computed aerodynamic coefficients, and angular accelerations. These parameters were added to facilitate post-flight aerodynamic coefficient determinations as well as shuttle entry air data sensor analyses. Software (NEWBET) was developed to generate the extended BET file utilizing the previously defined ENTREE BET, a dynamic data file which may be either derived inertial measurement unit data or aerodynamic coefficient instrument package data, and some atmospheric information.

Colors of reflection nebulae. II - The excitation of extended red emission

New BVI color-difference measurements are reported for the reflection nebulae NGC 7023, NGC 2068, and CED 201. The data are obtained through BVI imaging with a CCD detector and are analyzed together with previously published measurements for the reflection nebula NGC 2023. All four nebulae are substantially redder in the (V, I) range than expected on the basis of dust scattering alone, a result of the presence of extended emission in the I band. The relative strength of the I excess reaches a maximum in nebular regions where the color in the (B, V) range is bluest. These facts are interpreted in terms of a model which explains the extended I emission as a luminescence process excited by UV radiation from the illuminating star(s). Model fits identify the wavelength region between 1800 and 2500 A of the illuminating star's spectrum as the source of the energy of excitation. It appears possible that the 2200 A band in the dust-extinction curve is a gate for the excitation energy, and it is likely that the I excess emission and the extended near-IR emission recently discovered in reflection nebulae are similar in nature and origin.
