Upper limits to the X-ray luminosities of five supernovae.

Examination of data from the OSO-III X-ray telescope for evidence of X-ray emission from five optically detected extragalactic supernovae during the period from March 1967 to June 1968. Upper limits to the X-ray emission in the range from 7.7 to 113 keV near optical maximum (within 30 days) fall in the range from 10 to the minus 8th to 10 to the minus 10th ergs/sq cm-sec. Reasonable estimates of the distances to these supernovae lead to upper limits on the total energies of from 10 to the 50th to 10 to the 51st ergs.

Solar seeing and the spatial properties of the five-minute oscillations.

Numerical simulation of observations of the spatial properties of the five-minute oscillations, assuming that the oscillations are internal gravity waves excited by granular convection according to the theory of Thomas et al. (1971). The simulation includes the effects of seeing and finite aperture. The details of the simulation are chosen to model the observational method of Frazier (1968). The results show that the peak in the observed power spectrum of the oscillations can occur at a wavelength considerably longer than the true wavelength of the oscillations. In particular, the peak in Frazier's observed power spectra at wavelength of about 5000 km is consistent with the considerably shorter true wavelength of about 1500 km predicted by the gravity-wave theory.

Aerodynamic effects of five lift-fan pod arrangements on an unpowered V/STOL transport model

An investigation was conducted in the Langley V/STOL tunnel to determine the effect of longitudinally oriented wing-mounted pods on the longitudinal and lateral aerodynamic characteristics in the cruise flight condition of a high-wing V/STOL transport model. Five pod arrangements were tested - three configurations with in-line pods at 20, 40, or 60 percent semispan and two split pod configurations with rear pods at 20 percent semispan and front pods at 40 or 60 percent semispan. In general, addition of the pods to the model decreased the stability, increased the lift-curve slope, and alleviated the abrupt stall of the basic model. The configuration with pods at 20 percent semispan had an abrupt instability at 10 deg angle of attack, All the configurations had lateral stability at sideslip angles from 5 to -5 deg. Very little difference in results existed between the configurations with pods at 40 and 60 percent semispan. Of the split pod configurations, the configuration with front pods at 40 percent semispan offered the best trimmed lift and lift-induced drag characteristics at high angles of attack. The configuration with in-line pods at 40 or 60 percent semispan provided the best cruise characteristics of all the pod configurations.

First look analyses of five cycles of ERTS-1 imagery over County of Los Angeles: Assessment of data utility for urban development and regional planning

Significant results have been obtained from the analyses of ERTS-1 imagery from five cycles over Test Site SR 124 by classical photointerpretation and by an interactive hybrid multispectral information extraction system (GEMS). The synopticity, periodicity and multispectrality of ERTS coverage, available for the first time to LA County planners, have opened up both a new dimensionality in data and offer new capability in preparation of planning inputs. Photointerpretation of ERTS images has produced over 25 overlays at 1:1,000,000 scale depicting regional relations and urban structure in terms of several hundred linear and areal features. To mention only one such result, a possible new fault lineament has been discovered on the northern slope of the Santa Monica mountains in the scene 1144-18015, composited of MSS bands 4, 5, 6,. GEMS analysis of the ERTS products has provided new or improved information in the following planning data categories: urban vegetation; land cover segregation; man-made and natural impact monitoring; urban design; and suitability. ERTS data analysis has allowed planners to establish trends that directly impact planning policies. This new source of information will not only assist current methods to be more efficient, but permits entirely new planning methodologies to be employed.

Radio maps around five spiral and peculiar galaxies.

Areas of from 1 to 2 degrees square around five spiral and peculiar galaxies of apparent brightness between 10.3 and 12.7 mag have been mapped at a wavelength of 13 cm. In this small sample of observations it is found that, on the average, about two, counting the galaxy itself, radio sources of flux strength between 0.1 and 0.4 f.u. are physically associated with each spiral. This result supports the conclusion of De Jong that satellite radio sources are associated with spiral galaxies. If these preliminary results are indicative, then the radio sources associated with spiral galaxies differ from those classically associated with elliptical galaxies by being (1) intrinsically weaker and (2) not as accurately aligned as pairs across the central galaxy.

Feasibility model of a high reliability five-year tape transport, volume 2

Analysis of the design features of the modularized tape transport renders a life expectancy in excess of five years. Tests performed on the tape transport were directed toward determining its performance capability. These tests revealed that the tape jitter and skew are in the range achieved by high quality digital tape transports. Guidance of the tape in the lateral sense by the use of the two hybrid crowned rollers proved to be excellent. Tracking was maintained within less than one thousandth inch (approximately 2 micrometers). The guidance capability demonstrated makes possible the achievement of the performance objective of 7.2 x 10 to the 9th power storage capability employing 1500 ft. of one inch wide tape with a packing density of 5,000 bits per inch per track on 80 tracks. Also, the machine showed excellent characteristics operating over a wide range of tape speeds. The basic design concept lends itself to growth and adaptation to a wide range of recorder requirements.

Comparison of acoustic performance of five muffler configurations on a small helicopter

A field noise measurement program has been conducted on a standard Bell 47 series helicopter and on one that had been modified with specially designed, airframe-mounted mufflers to reduce the engine exhaust noise. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the acoustic performance of five experimental exhaust muffler configurations for a helicopter reciprocating engine in an operational environment. All muffler configurations produced beneficial engine exhaust noise reductions but some configurations were markedly better than others. Flyover noise results indicated that maximum overall noise reductions of approximately 8 db were obtained with the various mufflers. The rotor noise was judged to be the dominant noise component for the muffler-equipped helicopters whereas the engine noise was the dominant component for the basic configuration.

Five-micron pictures of Jupiter

Several hundred five-micron 'video' pictures of Jupiter, with 1-sec resolution, made during September, October, and December 1973 and compared with color photographs, are shown to exhibit direct, detailed correlations with the darker 'purple' features. Forty-four of these pictures were made just before the Pioneer-10 encounter.

Comparison of five levels of motion sickness severity as the basis for grading susceptibility

The motion sickness susceptibility of 275 healthy male subjects was measured quantitatively by a standardized laboratory procedure using a Stille rotational chair. The results, in terms of velocity of the chair and the number of active head movements, were combined into a single numerical score that represented the total stressor stimulus sustained in reaching, in turn, each of five specific criteria for diagnosing the severity of motion sickness. The stressor value (E factor) of a single head movement at each test rpm was adjusted to yield an equivalent susceptibility score (Coriolis Sickness Susceptibility Index, or CSSI) independent of the endpoint selected. Close agreement among the CSSI scores obtained at each endpoint was found in intercorrelations, test-retest reliability coefficients, and frequency distributions, which reflected the orderliness and stability in the appearance, ramification, and intensification of the acute symptomatology evoked in progressing from mild malaise to frank sickness.

Search for solid conductors of Na(+) and K(+) ions: Five new conductors

Five conductors of three structure types were discovered which, as solids, can transport Na(+) or K(+) ions with conductivities of approximately .00001/(omega cm) at 300 K. These compounds are: (1) the pyrochlores NaTaWO6 and NaTa2O5F, both with an activation energy for conduction delta E of 21 kJ/mole; (2) the bodycentered cubic form of NaSbO3, with delta E = 42 kJ/mole; and (3) the niobates 2Na2O with 3Nb2O5 and 2K2O with 3Nb2O5, with the alkali ions probably in open layers of the incompletely determined structure; delta E = 17 kJ/mole. On the basis of approximately 40 structure types, some generalizations were made regarding the relation between structure and ionic transport.

The four- and five-band multispectral scanners for Landsat

The earth resources sensing Multispectral Scanner (MSS) for the Landsat satellite has two versions; one with four spectral bands from 0.5 to 1.1 microns, and one with five bands, the added band being 10.4 to 12.6 microns. This paper describes optical design and performance. The instrument uses a flat, object-space scanning mirror of near-linear motion, with a sensitive optical position monitor to detect mirror angular position. The 22.9-cm aperture telescope images the scene on an array of fiber optics, which dissect and transmit the scene energy to photomultiplier tubes detecting in Bands 1, 2, and 3, and silicon photodiodes detecting Band 4. Band 5 energy passes the fiber optic assembly and is reimaged on a radiatively cooled mercury cadmium telluride (HgCdTe) detector. The orbiting four-band scanner is furnishing data registered to better than 50-m band-to-band and resolving 80-m repetitive pattern over a 185-km swath width from 907-km altitude.
