Carbon Nanostructure Examined by Lattice Fringe Analysis of High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy Images

The dimensions of graphitic layer planes directly affect the reactivity of soot towards oxidation and growth. Quantification of graphitic structure could be used to develop and test correlations between the soot nanostructure and its reactivity. Based upon transmission electron microscopy images, this paper provides a demonstration of the robustness of a fringe image analysis code for determining the level of graphitic structure within nanoscale carbon, i.e. soot. Results, in the form of histograms of graphitic layer plane lengths, are compared to their determination through Raman analysis.

Removing Fringes from STIS Slitless Spectra and WFC3 CCD Images

We have developed a model that allows us to defringe slitless 2-dimensional spectra taken with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). An IDL tool has been developed which allows the user to defringe any spectrum obtained with the G750L grating on STIS. This technique has been employed to model the fringing on Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) flight candidate CCDs.

Adaptive DFT-based Interferometer Fringe Tracking

An automatic interferometer fringe tracking system has been developed, implemented, and tested at the Infrared Optical Telescope Array (IOTA) observatory at Mt. Hopkins, Arizona. The system can minimize the optical path differences (OPDs) for all three baselines of the Michelson stellar interferometer at IOTA. Based on sliding window discrete Fourier transform (DFT) calculations that were optimized for computational efficiency and robustness to atmospheric disturbances, the algorithm has also been tested extensively on off-line data. Implemented in ANSI C on the 266 MHz PowerPC processor running the VxWorks real-time operating system, the algorithm runs in approximately 2.0 milliseconds per scan (including all three interferograms), using the science camera and piezo scanners to measure and correct the OPDs. The adaptive DFT-based tracking algorithm should be applicable to other systems where there is a need to detect or track a signal with an approximately constant-frequency carrier pulse.

Adaptive DIT-Based Fringe Tracking and Prediction at IOTA

An automatic fringe tracking system has been developed and implemented at the Infrared Optical Telescope Array (IOTA). In testing during May 2002, the system successfully minimized the optical path differences (OPDs) for all three baselines at IOTA. Preliminary analysis on an extension of this algorithm indicates a potential for predictive tracking, although at present, real-time implementation of this extension would require significantly more computational capacity.

Method and apparatus for a Fabry-Perot multiple beam fringe sensor

A method and the resulting apparatus for implementing a unique multiple beam fringe sensor that is adapted to be interfaced with a low cost, compact fiber optic transmission system in order to provide an accurate digital representation of a physical parameter (e.g. temperature) of a remote sample. The sensor is fabricated so as to include a Fabry-Perot gap formed between the ends of two mated optical fibers. By examining the optical characteristics of light that is transmitted through the Fabry-Perot sensor gap, an indication of gap width can be ascertained. Accordingly, a change in Fabry-Perot sensor gap width is related to a change in the particular physical parameter to be measured.

Nulling Interferometry: Working on the Dark Fringe

Deep nulling of both laser and thermal radiation has been demonstrated in the laboratory at visible wavelengths, by means of a rotational shearing interferometer (RSI) coupled to single-mode input and output fibers.

Performance and verification of the Keck Interferometer fringe detection and tracking system

We briefly discuss the instrument design of the Keck Interferometer from a hardware and realtime controls standpoint. We also show some recent visibility data from the instrument and summarize Fatcat's limiting sensitivity. Finally, we will discuss near and longterm evolution of the instrument through planned upgrades and summarize avenues for enhanced capability.

Diffusion filter eliminates fringe effects of coherent laser light source

Diffusion filter comprised of small particles in colloidal suspension reduces the coherence of a laser beam used as a photographic light source. Interference patterns which obscure details in photographic film are eliminated, the intensity and collimation are moderately affected.
