High density circuit technology

Acquisition of polyimide materials for inter-metal dielectrics was obtained from three vendors, with considerable evaluation conducted on the Dupont PI2550 material. Experimental results indicate this material can be patterned using contact printing to line width far below 0.1 mils. Optimum line width is acquired using plasma etch equipment. Metal lift-off experiments on thermal evaporated films were optimized for application to sputtered deposited films. Alternate metal-lift-off experiments are proposed for future investigation. Dry processing equipment studies and future trends in VLSI fabrication techniques are on-going.

Applications guide for waste heat recovery

The state-of-the-art of commercially available organic Rankine cycle (ORC) hardware from a literature search and industry survey is assessed. Engineering criteria for applying ORC technology are established, and a set of nomograms to enable the rapid sizing of the equipment is presented. A comparison of an ORC system with conventional heat recovery techniques can be made with a nomogram developed for a recuperative heat exchanger. A graphical technique for evaluating the economic aspects of an ORC system and conventional heat recovery method is discussed: also included is a description of anticipated future trends in organic Rankine cycle R&D.

An overview of computer-based natural language processing

Computer based Natural Language Processing (NLP) is the key to enabling humans and their computer based creations to interact with machines in natural language (like English, Japanese, German, etc., in contrast to formal computer languages). The doors that such an achievement can open have made this a major research area in Artificial Intelligence and Computational Linguistics. Commercial natural language interfaces to computers have recently entered the market and future looks bright for other applications as well. This report reviews the basic approaches to such systems, the techniques utilized, applications, the state of the art of the technology, issues and research requirements, the major participants and finally, future trends and expectations. It is anticipated that this report will prove useful to engineering and research managers, potential users, and others who will be affected by this field as it unfolds.

An overview of artificial intelligence and robotics. Volume 1: Artificial intelligence. Part A: The core ingredients

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an emerging technology that has recently attracted considerable attention. Many applications are now under development. The goal of Artificial Intelligence is focused on developing computational approaches to intelligent behavior. This goal is so broad - covering virtually all aspects of human cognitive activity - that substantial confusion has arisen as to the actual nature of AI, its current status and its future capability. This volume, the first in a series of NBS/NASA reports on the subject, attempts to address these concerns. Thus, this report endeavors to clarify what AI is, the foundations on which it rests, the techniques utilized, applications, the participants and, finally, AI's state-of-the-art and future trends. It is anticipated that this report will prove useful to government and private engineering and research managers, potential users, and others who will be affected by this field as it unfolds.

Cosmic-ray modulation and the anomalous component

Experimental and theoretical studies of cosmic-ray-modulation phenomena reported in the open literature by US researchers during the 1979-1982 period are reviewed. Areas covered include microscopic diffusion theory, gradient and curvature drift, global modulation theory, the anomalous component, and general modulation observations (such as the Pioneer-10 Forbush-decrease-propagation observations and studies on the time variation of the electron-to-proton ratio). An impressionistic overview of current and future trends in this area of study is also provided.

The 400-Hz aircraft power-generation systems: Advancing the baseline

Today's benchmark system for the Boeing 757/767/A310 airplanes and future trends in hydromechanical aircraft power generating systems are discussed. The 757/767/A310 system represents the commercial state of the art and the direction in which Sundstrand Corp. is headed, particularly in regard to weight reduction. Sundstrand introduced microprocessor control in an in service system in the Boeing 767 and was the first to use databus communications between the controls. Plans to develop this technology are briefly discussed. Alternative ways to produce and use power in aircraft are discussed. The integrated starter drive is discussed.
