Disorder-Enriched Magnetic Excitations in a Heisenberg-Kitaev Quantum Magnet Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6

Using optical magnetospectroscopy, we investigate the magnetic excitations of Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 in a broad magnetic field range (0 T ≤ B ≤ 17.5 T) at low temperature. Our measurements reveal rich spectra of in-plane magnetic excitations with a surprisingly large number of modes, even in the high-field spin-polarized state. Theoretical calculations find that the Na-occupation disorder in Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 plays a crucial role in generating these modes. Our Letter demonstrates the necessity to consider disorder in the spin environment in the search for Kitaev quantum spin liquid states in practicable materials.

Sixfold Way of Traversable Wormholes in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model

In the infrared limit, a nearly anti–de Sitter spacetime in two dimensions ( AdS 2 ) perturbed by a weak double trace deformation and a two-site ( q > 2 )-body Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with N Majoranas and a weak 2 r -body intersite coupling share the same near-conformal dynamics described by a traversable wormhole. We exploit this relation to propose a symmetry classification of traversable wormholes depending on N , q , and r , with q > 2 r , and confirm it by a level statistics analysis using exact diagonalization techniques. Intriguingly, a time-reversed state never results in a new state, so only six universality classes occur—A, AI, BDI, CI, C, and D—and different symmetry sectors of the model may belong to distinct universality classes. Sparsity-Independent Lyapunov Exponent in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model

The saturation of a recently proposed universal bound on the Lyapunov exponent has been conjectured to signal the existence of a gravity dual. This saturation occurs in the low-temperature limit of the dense Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, N Majorana fermions with q body ( q > 2 ) infinite-range interactions. We calculate certain out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) for N ≤ 64 fermions for a highly sparse SYK model and find no significant dependence of the Lyapunov exponent on sparsity up to near the percolation limit where the Hamiltonian breaks up into blocks. This provides strong support to the saturation of the Lyapunov exponent in the low-temperature limit of the sparse SYK. A key ingredient to reaching N = 64 is the development of a novel quantum spin model simulation library that implements highly optimized matrix-free Krylov subspace methods on graphical processing units. This leads to a significantly lower simulation time as well as vastly reduced memory usage over previous approaches, while using modest computational resources. Strong sparsity-driven statistical fluctuations require both the use of a much larger number of disorder realizations with respect to the dense limit and a careful finite size scaling analysis. The saturation of the bound in the sparse SYK points to the existence of a gravity analog that would enlarge substantially the number of field theories with this feature. Defect control in the Heisenberg-Kitaev candidate material NaRuO 2

The combination of geometric frustration, extended hopping, spin-orbit coupling, and a disordered magnetic ground state make NaRuO 2 an attractive Heisenberg-Kitaev candidate material. Historically, NaRuO 2 has been a challenging material to produce, even in polycrystalline form. Here we present synthetic efforts that identify a propensity for Na Ru defects to form in NaRuO 2 , revealing a full solid-solution between NaRuO 2 and disordered Na 2 RuO 3 . We report the synthesis of alloys along the Na 3+x Ru 3–x O 6 solid solution and characterize changes in the bulk magnetization and electron transport as a function of Na loading. Furthermore, our results highlight the importance of stoichiometry control in NaRuO 2 when investigating and interpreting this material’s physical properties.

Thermal Probes of Phonon-Coupled Kitaev Spin Liquids: From Accurate Extraction of Quantized Edge Transport to Anyon Interferometry

Recent theoretical studies inspired by experiments on the Kitaev magnet α-RuCl 3 highlight the nontrivial impact of phonons on the thermal Hall conductivity of chiral topological phases. Here, we introduce mixed mesoscopic-macroscopic devices that allow refined thermal-transport probes of non-Abelian spin liquids with Ising topological order. These devices feature a quantum-coherent region with quantized or negligible phonon conductance, flanked by macroscopic lobes that facilitate efficient thermalization between chiral Majorana edge modes and bulk phonons. We show that our devices enable (i) accurate determination of the quantized thermal Hall conductivity, (ii) identification of non-Abelian Ising anyons via the temperature dependence of the thermal conductance, and, most interestingly, (iii) single-anyon detection through heat-based anyon interferometry. Analogous results apply broadly to phonon-coupled chiral topological orders.

Quantum Sensing of Displacements with Stabilized Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill States

We demonstrate how recent protocols developed for the stabilization of Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill states can be used for the estimation of two-quadrature displacement sensing, with sensitivities approaching the multivariate quantum Cramer-Rao bound. Thanks to the stabilization, this sensor is backaction evading and can function continuously without reset, making it well suited for the detection of itinerant signals. Additionally, we provide numerical simulations showing that the protocol can unconditionally surpass the Gaussian limit of displacement sensing with prior information, even in the presence of realistic noise. Our work shows how reservoir engineering in bosonic systems can be leveraged for quantum metrology, with potential applications in force sensing, waveform estimation, and quantum channel learning.

Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models and beyond: Window into non-Fermi liquids

In this work is a review of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model of compressible quantum many-body systems without quasiparticle excitations, and its connections to various theoretical studies of non-Fermi liquids in condensed matter physics. The review is placed in the context of numerous experimental observations on correlated electron materials. Strong correlations in metals are often associated with their proximity to a Mott transition to an insulator created by the local Coulomb repulsion between the electrons. The phase diagrams of a number of models of such a local electronic correlation are explored, employing a dynamical mean-field theory in the presence of random spin exchange interactions. Numerical analyses and analytical solutions, using renormalization group methods and expansions in large spin degeneracy, lead to critical regions that display SYK physics. The models studied include the single-band Hubbard model, the t–J model, and the two-band Kondo-Heisenberg model in the presence of random spin exchange interactions. Also examined are non-Fermi liquids obtained by considering each SYK model with random four-fermion interactions to be a multiorbital atom, with the SYK atoms arranged in an infinite lattice. Connections are made to theories of sharp Fermi surfaces without any low-energy quasiparticles in the absence of spatial disorder, obtained by coupling a Fermi liquid to a gapless boson; a systematic large-N theory of such a critical Fermi surface, with SYK characteristics, is obtained by averaging over an ensemble of theories with random boson-fermion couplings. Finally, an overview of the links between the SYK model and quantum gravity is presented, and the review ends with an outlook on open questions.

First demonstration of tuning between the Kitaev and Ising limits in a honeycomb lattice

Recent observations of novel spin-orbit coupled states have generated interest in 4d/5d transition metal systems. A prime example is the J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ state in iridate materials and α-RuCl 3 that drives Kitaev interactions. Here, by tuning the competition between spin-orbit interaction (λ SOC ) and trigonal crystal field (Δ T ), we restructure the spin-orbital wave functions into a previously unobserved μ = $\frac{1}{2}$ state that drives Ising interactions. This is done via a topochemical reaction that converts Li 2 RhO 3 to Ag 3 LiRh 2 O 6 . Using perturbation theory, we present an explicit expression for the μ = $\frac{1}{2}$ state in the limit Δ T ≫ λ SOC realized in Ag 3 LiRh 2 O 6 , different from the conventional J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ state in the limit λ SOC ≫ Δ T realized in Li 2 RhO 3 . The change of ground state is followed by a marked change of magnetism from a 6 K spin-glass in Li 2 RhO 3 to a 94 K antiferromagnet in Ag 3 LiRh 2 O 6 .

Kitaev model on a quantum computer using VQE with Majorana fermions

We study the simulation of the Kitaev spin model on quantum computers. In particular we focus on the models defined on the honeycomb, and square-octagon lattices. Using a fermionic language to describe these models reveals a region of the parameter space that is exactly solvable. We explore an ansatz that is capable of expressing the ground state in the exactly solvable region of the parameter space and extend it outside this region with good accuracy. Doing the calculation using fermions, while requiring the introduction of a non-local map from the fermionic Hilbert space to that of qubits, offers the potentially interesting application of realizing non-abelian anyons on quantum computers, and can also lead to a reduction in the number of qubits required by half.

Fermionic approach to variational quantum simulation of Kitaev spin models

We use the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) to simulate Kitaev spin models with and without integrability breaking perturbations, focusing in particular on the honeycomb and square-octagon lattices. These models are well known for being exactly solvable in a certain parameter regime via a mapping to free fermions. We use classical simulations to explore a novel variational ansatz that takes advantage of this fermionic representation and is capable of expressing the exact ground state in the solvable limit. We also demonstrate that this ansatz can be extended beyond this limit to provide excellent accuracy when compared to other VQE approaches. In certain cases, this fermionic representation is advantageous because it reduces by a factor of two the number of qubits required to perform the simulation. We also comment on the implications of our results for simulating non-Abelian anyons on quantum computers.

Order fractionalization in a Kitaev-Kondo model

We describe a mechanism for order fractionalization in a two-dimensional Kondo lattice model, in which electrons interact with a gapless spin liquid of Majorana fermions described by the Yao-Lee (YL) model. When the Kondo coupling to the conduction electrons exceeds a critical value, the model develops a superconducting instability into a state with a a spinor order parameter with charge 4 and spin ( = 1 2. The broken symmetry state develops a gapless Majorana Dirac cone in the bulk. By including an appropriate gauge string, we can show that the charge 4, spinorial order develops off-diagonal long range order that allows electrons to coherently tunnel arbitrarily long distances through the spin liquid.

Linear resistivity and Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) spin liquid behavior in a quantum critical metal with spin-1/2 fermions

Significance In “Planckian metals,” electrons dissipate energy at the fastest possible rate allowed by the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics, resulting in a linear temperature dependence of their electrical resistivity. Although observed for a number of quantum materials, this phenomenon lacks a general theoretical understanding and is often considered as one of the prominent fundamental questions in condensed matter physics. Here, we show that Planckian dissipation and a behavior consistent with the “marginal Fermi liquid” phenomenology emerge in the quantum critical regime separating a Mott insulating spin glass and a Fermi liquid. By establishing this behavior in an explicit model solvable by state-of-the-art computational methods, our theory paves the way toward a deeper understanding of Planckian or “strange” metals.

Re-investigation of moment direction in a Kitaev material α -RuCl 3

Abstract We report x-ray diffraction and resonant elastic x-ray scattering studies on two α -RuCl 3 crystals with distinct magnetic transition temperatures: T N = 7.3 K and 6.5 K. We find that the sample with T N = 6.5 K exhibits a high degree of stacking faults and structural twinning at low temperature, whereas the T N = 7.3 K sample primarily comprises a single domain of R 3 ¯ . Notwithstanding, both samples exhibit an identical zigzag magnetic structure, with magnetic moments pointing away from the honeycomb plane by α = 31 ( 2 ) ∘ . We argue that the identical ordered moment directions in these samples suggest that the intralayer magnetic interactions remain mostly unchanged regardless of T N .

Magnon damping in the zigzag phase of the Kitaev-Heisenberg- Γ model on a honeycomb lattice

We calculate dispersions and damping of the magnetic excitations in the model that is relevant to a description of the magnetic properties of iridium oxides α-Li 2 IrO 3 and Na 2 IrO 3 , and Ru-based materials such as α-RuCl 3 . Focusing on the parameter regime with the zigzag spin pattern in the ground state that is consistent with experiments, we are able to obtain explicit analytical expressions for magnon energies and eigenstates and go beyond the standard linear spin-wave theory approximation by calculating magnon damping and demonstrating its role in the dynamical structure factor. Here, we show that the magnon damping effects in both Born and self-consistent approximations are very significant, underscoring the importance of nonlinear magnon coupling in interpreting broad features in the neutron-scattering spectra.
