HEOS-A2: Press kit

The characteristics of the HEOS-A2 satellite and its assigned mission are discussed. The spacecraft carries seven experiments to investigate the strength and direction of the magnetic fields encountered, the energy distribution of protons and electrons, the nature of the solar winds, detection of micrometeorites, and low frequency solar observations. The highly elliptical polar orbit required for this mission will have an apogee of 38 earth radii. The lifetime of the satellite is expected to be one year minimum.

TD-1A: Press kit

The scientific experiments onboard the Thor-Delta 1Z spacecraft are described. The experiments were designed to study high energy emissions from stellar and galactic sources and the Sun not visible to earth bound observations. Studies were also made of the ultraviolet radiation, X-rays, gamma rays unhindered by the blanketing and absorbing effect of the earth's atmosphere.

Engineering analysis and test results of the pre-stage planetary gear trains for wrist rotation and pitch assembly and azimuth and elevation assembly of the extendable stiff arm manipulator kit assembly

In order to improve the performance capability of the Extendable Stiff Arm Manipulator (ESAM) it was necessary to increase the overall gear ratio by a factor of approximately four. This is accomplished with minimum effect to existing hardware by the interposition of a planetary gear transmission between the respective drive motors and the harmonic drive transmissions. The engineering analysis in support of this design approach and the subsequent no-load test results are reported.

Apollo Soyuz test project press kit: USA-USSR

The goals and program of the mission are described. Operations from preflight crew training through splashdown are included. Spacecraft and launch vehicle configurations are given. The 27 joint and unilateral experiments to be performed are described. A flight plan and a schedule of activities is included, together with brief crew biographies. The ground support system is discussed; it includes control centers in Houston and Moscow, and an ATS satellite to relay ground-air-ground communications. The global tracking network and the television transmission system are also described.

Press Kit: Project RCA (Satcom 1R)

To replace the RCA SATCOM 1 satellite which provided Earth communications for seven years, NASA is to launch RCA SATCOM 1R using a Delta 3924 launch vehicle. The satellite is to be placed at 139 degrees W longitude, 35,900 kilometers (23,000) miles above the equator. On the seventh apogee, the kick motor will be fired to produce a near synchronous orbit. Satellite life, with continuous full power, is designed to be 10 years. Features of the satellite and launch operations are described.
