Implications of Large- N c QCD for the NN Interaction

We present a method for ordering two-nucleon interactions based upon their scaling with the number of QCD colors, N c , in the limit that N c becomes large. Available data in the two-nucleon sector show general agreement with this ordering, indicating that the method may be useful in other contexts where data are less readily available. However, several caveats and potential pitfalls can make the large-N c ordering fragile and/or vulnerable to misinterpretation. We discuss the application of the large-N c analysis to two- and three-nucleon interactions, including those originating from weak and BSM (beyond the Standard Model) interactions, as well as two-nucleon external currents. Finally, we discuss some open questions in the field.

Analytic and numerical bootstrap of CFTs with $O(m)\times O(n)$ global symmetry in 3D

Motivated by applications to critical phenomena and open theoretical questions, we study conformal field theories with O(m)\times O(n) O ( m ) × O ( n ) global symmetry in d=3 d = 3 spacetime dimensions. We use both analytic and numerical bootstrap techniques. Using the analytic bootstrap, we calculate anomalous dimensions and OPE coefficients as power series in \varepsilon=4-d ε = 4 − d and in 1/n 1 / n , with a method that generalizes to arbitrary global symmetry. Whenever comparison is possible, our results agree with earlier results obtained with diagrammatic methods in the literature. Using the numerical bootstrap, we obtain a wide variety of operator dimension bounds, and we find several islands (isolated allowed regions) in parameter space for O(2)\times O(n) O ( 2 ) × O ( n ) theories for various values of n n . Some of these islands can be attributed to fixed points predicted by perturbative methods like the \varepsilon ε and large- n n expansions, while others appear to arise due to fixed points that have been claimed to exist in resummations of perturbative beta functions.

Modified instanton sum in QCD and higher-groups

We consider the SU(N) Yang-Mills theory, whose topological sectors are restricted to the instanton number with integer multiples of p. We can formulate such a quantum field theory maintaining locality and unitarity, and the model contains both 2π-periodic scalar and 3-form gauge fields. This can be interpreted as coupling a topological theory to Yang-Mills theory, so the local dynamics becomes identical with that of pure Yang-Mills theory. The theory has not only $\mathbb{Z}$ N 1-form symmetry but also $\mathbb{Z}$ p 3-form symmetry, and we study the global nature of this theory from the recent ’t Hooft anomaly matching. The computation of ’t Hooft anomaly incorporates an intriguing higher-group structure. We also carefully examine that how such kinematical constraint is realized in the dynamics by using the large-N and also the reliable semiclassics on $\mathbb{R}$ 3 × S 1 , and we find that the topological susceptibility plays a role of the order parameter for the $\mathbb{Z}$ p 3-form symmetry. Introducing a fermion in the fundamental or adjoint representation, we find that the chiral symmetry becomes larger than the usual case by $\mathbb{Z}$ p , and it leads to the extra p vacua by discrete chiral symmetry breaking. No dynamical domain wall can interpolate those extra vacua since such objects must be charged under the 3-form symmetry in order to match the ’t Hooft anomaly.

Single-crystalline orthorhombic GdAlGe as a rare-earth magnetic Dirac nodal-line metal

Crystal engineering is a method for discovering new quantum materials and phases, which may be achieved using external pressure or strain. Chemical pressure is unique in that it generates internal pressure perpetually to the lattice. As an example, GdAlSi from the rare-earth (𝑅) 𝑅⁢Al⁢𝑋 (𝑋=Si or Ge) family of Weyl semimetals is considered. Replacing Si with the larger isovalent element Ge creates sufficiently large chemical pressure to induce a structural transition from the tetragonal structure of GdAlSi, compatible with a Weyl semimetallic state, to an orthorhombic phase in GdAlGe, resulting in an inversion-symmetry-protected nodal-line metal. We find that GdAlGe hosts an antiferromagnetic ground state with two successive orderings, at 𝑇 N ⁢1=35K and 𝑇 N ⁢2=30K. In-plane isothermal magnetization shows a magnetic field induced metamagnetic transition at 6.2 T for 2 K. Furthermore, electron-hole compensation gives rise to a large magnetoresistance of ∼100% at 2 K and 14 T. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and density functional theory calculations reveal a Dirac-like linear band dispersion over an exceptionally large energy range of ∼1.5eV with a high Fermi velocity of ∼10 6 m/s, a rare feature not observed in any magnetic topological materials.

A semi-analytic estimate for the effective sound speed counterterm in the EFTofLSS

The Effective Field Theory of Large Scale Structure (EFTofLSS) has found tremendous success as a perturbative framework for the evolution of large scale structure, and it is now routinely used to compare theoretical predictions against cosmological observations. The model for the total matter field includes one nuisance parameter at 1-loop order, the effective sound speed, which can be extracted by matching the EFT to full N-body simulations. In this work we first leverage the Layzer-Irvine cosmic energy equation to show that the equation of state can be exactly computed with knowledge of the fully nonlinear power spectrum. When augmented with separate universe methods, we show one can estimate the effective sound speed. This estimate is in good agreement with simulation results, with errors at the few tens of percent level. Here, we apply our method to investigate the cosmology dependence of the effective sound speed and to shed light on what cosmic structures shape its value.

Conformal boundary conditions for a 4d scalar field

We construct unitary, stable, and interacting conformal boundary conditions for a free massless scalar in four dimensions by coupling it to edge modes living on a boundary. The boundary theories we consider are bosonic and fermionic QED _3 3 with N_f N f flavors and a Chern-Simons term at level k k , in the large- N_f N f limit with fixed k/N_f k / N f . We find that interacting boundary conditions only exist when k≠ 0 k ≠ 0 . To obtain this result we compute the \beta β functions of the classically marginal couplings at the first non-vanishing order in the large- N_f N f expansion, and to all orders in k/N_f k / N f and in the couplings. To check vacuum stability we also compute the large- N_f N f effective potential. We compare our results with the the known conformal bootstrap bounds.

Failure of the large-N expansion in a bosonic tensor model

We study the tensor model generalization of the quantum p-spherical model in the large-N limit. While the tensor model has the same large-N expansion as the disordered quantum p-spherical model, its ground state is superextensive, in contradiction with large-N perturbation theory. Therefore, the large-N expansion of this model catastrophically fails at arbitrarily large-N, without any obvious signal in perturbation theory.

First measurement of the $Λ–Ξ$ interaction in proton–proton collisions at the LHC

The first experimental information on the strong interaction between $Λ$ and $Ξ$ - strange baryons is presented in this Letter. The correlation function of $Λ–Ξ$ - and $\overline{Λ}$ –$\overline{Ξ}$ + pairs produced in high-multiplicity proton–proton (pp) collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV at the LHC is measured as a function of the relative momentum of the pair. The femtoscopy method is used to calculate the correlation function, which is then compared with theoretical expectations obtained using a meson exchange model, chiral effective field theory, and Lattice QCD calculations close to the physical point. Data support predictions of small scattering parameters while discarding versions with large ones, thus suggesting a weak $Λ–Ξ$ - interaction. The limited statistical significance of the data does not yet allow one to constrain the effects of coupled channels like $Σ–Ξ$ and $N–Ω$.

Dynamics of the simplest chiral gauge theories

Arguably, the simplest chiral gauge theories are SO(10) with 𝑁 𝑓 fermion fields in the spinor representation 𝟏𝟔. We study their dynamics using their supersymmetric limits perturbed by an infinitesimal anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking as a guide. We predict the theory is gapped for 𝑁 𝑓 = 1, 2, while the SU⁡(𝑁 𝑓 ) global symmetry is broken to SO⁡(N 𝑓 ) for moderately large 𝑁 𝑓 ≥ 3.

Conformal collider physics meets LHC data

The remarkably high energies of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have allowed for the first measurements of the shapes and scalings of multipoint correlators of energy flow operators, ⟨ Ψ | E ( n → 1 ) E ( n → 2 ) ⋯ E ( n → k ) | Ψ ⟩ , providing new insights into the Lorentzian dynamics of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In this letter, we use recent advances in effective field theory to derive a rigorous factorization theorem for the light-ray density matrix, ρ = | Ψ ⟩ ⟨ Ψ | , inside high transverse momentum jets at the LHC. Using the light-ray operator product expansion, the scaling behavior of multipoint correlators can be computed from the expectation value of the twist-2 spin- J light-ray operators, O [ J ] , in this state, Tr [ ρ O [ J ] ] . We compute the light-ray density matrix at next-to-leading order, and combine this with results for the next-to-leading logarithmic scaling behavior of the correlators up to six-points, comparing with CMS open data. This theoretical accuracy allows us to resolve the quantum scaling dimensions of QCD light-ray operators inside jets at the LHC. Our factorization theorem for the light-ray density matrix at the LHC completes the link between recent developments in the study of energy correlators and LHC phenomenology, opening the door to a wide variety of precision jet substructure studies. A perturbative CFT dual for pure NS–NS AdS 3 strings

We construct a conformal field theory dual to string theory on AdS 3 with pure NS–NS flux. It is given by a symmetric orbifold of a linear dilaton theory deformed by a marginal operator from the twist-2 sector. We compute two- and three-point functions on the CFT side to 4th order in conformal perturbation theory at large N. They agree with the string computation at genus 0, thus providing ample evidence for a duality. We also show that the full spectra of both short and long strings on the CFT and the string side match. Furthermore, the duality should be understood as perturbative in N –1 .

From large to small $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = (4, 4) superconformal surface defects in holographic 6d SCFTs

Abstract Two-dimensional (2d)$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (4, 4) Lie superalgebras can be either “small” or “large”, meaning their R-symmetry is either$$ \mathfrak{so} $$ so (4) or$$ \mathfrak{so} $$ so (4) ⊕$$ \mathfrak{so} $$ so (4), respectively. Both cases admit a superconformal extension and fit into the one-parameter family$$ \mathfrak{d} $$ d (2,1;γ) ⊕$$ \mathfrak{d} $$ d (2,1;γ), with parameterγ∈ (−∞,∞). The large algebra corresponds to generic values ofγ, while the small case corresponds to a degeneration limit withγ→ −∞. In 11d supergravity, we study known solutions with superisometry algebra$$ \mathfrak{d} $$ d (2,1;γ) ⊕$$ \mathfrak{d} $$ d (2,1;γ) that are asymptotically locally AdS 7 ×𝕊 4 . These solutions are holographically dual to the 6d maximally superconformal field theory with 2d superconformal defects invariant under$$ \mathfrak{d} $$ d (2,1;γ) ⊕$$ \mathfrak{d} $$ d (2,1;γ). We show that a limit of these solutions, in whichγ→ −∞, reproduces another known class of solutions, holographically dual tosmall$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (4, 4) superconformal defects. We then use this limit to generate new small$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (4, 4) solutions with finite Ricci scalar, in contrast to the known small$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (4, 4) solutions. We then use holography to compute the entanglement entropy of a spherical region centered on these small$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (4, 4) defects, which provides a linear combination of defect Weyl anomaly coefficients that characterizes the number of defect-localized degrees of freedom. We also comment on the generalization of our results to include$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (0,4) surface defects through orbifolding.

An accurate perturbative approach to redshift space clustering of biased tracers in modified gravity

We extend the scale-dependent Gaussian Streaming Model (GSM) to produce analytical predictions for the anisotropic redshift-space correlation function for biased tracers in modified gravity models. Employing the Convolution Lagrangian Perturbation Theory (CLPT) re-summation scheme, with a local Lagrangian bias schema provided by the peak-background split formalism, we predict the necessary ingredients that enter the GSM, the real-space halo pairwise velocity and the pairwise velocity dispersion. We further consider effective field theory contributions to the pairwise velocity dispersion in order to model correctly its large scale behavior. We apply our method on two widely-considered modified gravity models, the chameleon-screened ƒ(R) Hu-Sawicki model and the nDGP Vainshtein model and compare our predictions against state-of-the-art N-body simulations for these models. We demonstrate that the GSM approach to predict the monopole and the quadrupole of the redshift-space correlation function for halos, gives very good agreement with the simulation data, for a wide range of screening mechanisms, levels of screening and halo masses at z = 0.5 and z = 1. Our work shows the applicability of the GSM, for cosmologies beyond GR, demonstrating that it can serve as a powerful predictive tool for the next stage of cosmological surveys like DESI, Euclid, LSST and WFIRST.

Entropy variations and light ray operators from replica defects

We study the defect operator product expansion (OPE) of displacement operators in free and interacting conformal field theories using replica methods. We show that as n approaches 1 a contact term can emerge when the OPE contains defect operators of twist d - 2. For interacting theories and general states we give evidence that the only possibility is from the defect operator that becomes the stress tensor in the n → 1 limit. This implies that the quantum null energy condition (QNEC) is always saturated for CFTs with a twist gap. As a check, we show independently that in a large class of near vacuum states, the second variation of the entanglement entropy is given by a simple correlation function of averaged null energy operators as studied by Hofman and Maldacena. This suggests that sub-leading terms in the defect OPE are controlled by a defect version of the spin-3 non-local light ray operator and we speculate about the possible origin of such a defect operator. For free theories this contribution condenses to a contact term that leads to violations of QNEC saturation.

Delocalized polaron and Burstein-Moss shift induced by Li in α–V 2 O 5 : A DFT + DMFT study

For this work, we performed density functional theory (DFT)+U and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) calculations with a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver to investigate the electronic properties of V 2 O 5 and Li x V 2 O 5 (x = 0.125 and 0.25). Pristine V 2 O 5 is a charge-transfer insulator with strong O p–V d hybridization, and it exhibits a large band gap (E gap ) as well as a nonzero conduction-band (CB) gap.We show that the band gap, the number of d electrons of vanadium, N d , and the CB gap for V 2 O 5 obtained from our DMFT calculations are in excellent agreement with the experimental values. While the DFT +U approach replicates the experimental band gap, it overestimates the value of N d and underestimates the CB gap. In the presence of low Li doping, the electronic properties of V 2 O 5 are mainly driven by a polaronic mechanism, and electron spin resonance and electron nuclear double resonance spectroscopies observed the coexistence of free and bound polarons. Notably, our DMFT results identify both polaron types, with the bound polaron being energetically preferred, while the DFT +U method only predicts the free polaron. Our DMFT analysis also reveals that increased Li doping leads to electron filling in the conduction band, shifting the Fermi level. This result is consistent with the observed Burstein-Moss shift upon enhanced Li doping, and we thus demonstrate that the DFT + DMFT approach can be used for an accurate and realistic description of strongly correlated materials.

On the statistical theory of self-gravitating collisionless dark matter flow

Dark matter, if it exists, accounts for five times as much as the ordinary baryonic matter. Compared to hydrodynamic turbulence, the flow of dark matter might possess the widest presence in our universe. This paper presents a statistical theory for the flow of dark matter that is compared with N-body simulations. By contrast to hydrodynamics of normal fluids, dark matter flow is self-gravitating, long-range, and collisionless with a scale-dependent flow behavior. The peculiar velocity field is of constant divergence nature on small scale and irrotational on large scale. The statistical measures, i.e., correlation, structure, dispersion, and spectrum functions, are modeled on both small and large scales, respectively. Kinematic relations between statistical measures are fully developed for incompressible, constant divergence, and irrotational flow. Incompressible and constant divergence flow share the same kinematic relations for even order correlations. The limiting correlation of velocity $\mathrm{ρ_{L}=1/2}$ on the smallest scale ( r = 0) is a unique feature of collisionless flow ($\mathrm{ρ_{L}=1}$ for incompressible flow). On large scale, transverse velocity correlation has an exponential form $T_{2}∝e^{–r/r_2}$ with a constant comoving scale r 2 =21.3 Mpc/h that may be related to the horizon size at matter–radiation equality. All other correlation, structure, dispersion, and spectrum functions for velocity, density, and potential fields are derived analytically from kinematic relations for irrotational flow. On small scale, longitudinal structure function follows one-fourth law of ${S}_{2}^{1}∝r^{1/4}$. All other statistical measures can be obtained from kinematic relations for constant divergence flow. Vorticity is negatively correlated for scale r between 1 and 7 Mpc/h. Divergence is negatively correlated for r > 30 Mpc/h that leads to a negative density correlation.

Comparing Compressed and Full-Modeling analyses with FOLPS: implications for DESI 2024 and beyond

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) will provide unprecedented information about the large-scale structure of our Universe. In this work, we study the robustness of the theoretical modelling of the power spectrum of F OLPS , a novel effective field theory-based package for evaluating the redshift space power spectrum in the presence of massive neutrinos. We perform this validation by fitting the AbacusSummit high-accuracy N -body simulations for Luminous Red Galaxies, Emission Line Galaxies and Quasar tracers, calibrated to describe DESI observations. We quantify the potential systematic error budget of F OLPS finding that the modelling errors are fully sub-dominant for the DESI statistical precision within the studied range of scales. Additionally, we study two complementary approaches to fit and analyse the power spectrum data, one based on direct Full-Modelling fits and the other on the ShapeFit compression variables, both resulting in very good agreement in precision and accuracy. In each of these approaches, we study a set of potential systematic errors induced by several assumptions, such as the choice of template cosmology, the effect of prior choice in the nuisance parameters of the model, or the range of scales used in the analysis. Furthermore, we show how opening up the parameter space beyond the vanilla ΛCDM model affects the DESI observables. These studies include the addition of massive neutrinos, spatial curvature, and dark energy equation of state. We also examine how relaxing the usual Cosmic Microwave Background and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis priors on the primordial spectral index and the baryonic matter abundance, respectively, impacts the inference on the rest of the parameters of interest. This paper pathways towards performing a robust and reliable analysis of the shape of the power spectrum of DESI galaxy and quasar clustering using F OLPS .

Soft gravitons in the BFSS matrix model

BFSS proposed that asymptotically flat M-theory is dual to a large N limit of the matrix quantum mechanics describing N nonrelativistic D0-branes. Recent insights on the soft symmetries of any quantum theory of gravity in asymptotically flat space are applied to the BFSS matrix model. It is shown that soft gravitons are realized by submatrices whose rank is held fixed in the large N M-theory limit, rather than the usual linear scaling with N for hard gravitons. The soft expansion is identified with the large N expansion and the soft theorem becomes a universal formula for the quantum mechanical scattering of such submatrix excitations. This formula is shown to be the Ward identity of large type IIA U(1) RR asymptotic gauge symmetry in the matrix model, whose asymptotic boundaries are at future and past timelike infinity.
