Fast and Accurate Predictions of Total Energy for Solid Solution Alloys with Graph Convolutional Neural Networks

We use graph convolutional neural networks (GCNNs) to produce fast and accurate predictions of the total energy of solid solution binary alloys. GCNNs allow us to abstract the lattice structure of a solid material as a graph, whereby atoms are modeled as nodes and metallic bonds as edges. This representation naturally incorporates information about the structure of the material, thereby eliminating the need for computationally expensive data pre-processing which would be required with standard neural network (NN) approaches. We train GCNNs on ab-initio density functional theory (DFT) for copper-gold (CuAu) and iron-platinum (FePt) data that has been generated by running the LSMS-3 code, which implements a locally self-consistent multiple scattering method, on OLCF supercomputers Titan and Summit. GCNN outperforms the ab-initio DFT simulation by orders of magnitude in terms of computational time to produce the estimate of the total energy for a given atomic configuration of the lattice structure. We compare the predictive performance of GCNN models against a standard NN such as dense feedforward multi-layer perceptron (MLP) by using the root-mean-squared errors to quantify the predictive quality of the deep learning (DL) models. We find that the attainable accuracy of GCNNs is at least an order of magnitude better than that of the MLP.

A Scalable Space-Time Domain Decomposition Approach for Solving Large Scale Nonlinear Regularized Inverse Ill Posed Problems in 4D Variational Data Assimilation

We address the development of innovative algorithms designed to solve the strong-constraint Four Dimensional Variational Data Assimilation (4DVar DA) problems in large scale applications. We present a space-time decomposition approach which employs the whole domain decomposition, i.e. both along the spacial and temporal direction in the overlapping case, and the partitioning of both the solution and the operator. Starting from the global functional defined on the entire domain, we get to a sort of regularized local functionals on the set of sub domains providing the order reduction of both the predictive and the Data Assimilation models. The algorithm convergence is developed. Performance in terms of reduction of time complexity and algorithmic scalability is discussed on the Shallow Water Equations on the sphere. The number of state variables in the model, the number of observations in an assimilation cycle, as well as numerical parameters as the discretization step in time and in space domain are defined on the basis of discretization grid used by data available at repository Ocean Synthesis/Reanalysis Directory of Hamburg University.

Improved Accuracy in Semi-Experimental Structure Determination by Resolving Problems Associated with Rotation of Principal Inertial Axes of Isotopologues: Structures of 1,3-Oxazole ( c -C 3 H 3 NO)

The rotational spectrum of the normal isotopologue of 1,3-oxazole (c-C 3 H 3 NO) was observed from 43 to 750 GHz. Over 3900 transitions for the ground vibrational state are measured, assigned, and least-squares fit to sextic centrifugally distorted-rotor Hamiltonians. The measured frequencies and resulting spectroscopic constants from this extended spectral range, combined with previous measurements of the nuclear quadrupole coupling constants, will facilitate astronomical searches for oxazole across the majority of the range of modern radiotelescopes. Spectra for a set of 30 oxazole isotopologues, which include multiple isotopic substitutions of each atom, are used to determine the first semi-experimental equilibrium ($r$$^{SE}_{e}$) structure and semi-experimental substitution structure ($r$$^{SE}_{e}$), each using CCSD(T) computed values for the vibration–rotation interaction and electron-mass corrections. The large number of isotopologues, including 21 isotopologues observed for the first time, and the redundant substitutions of each atom provide sufficient spectroscopic information to determine the $r$$^{SE}_{e}$ structure with the expected high level of accuracy and precision (0.0001 or 0.0002 Å in bond distances and 0.013 to 0.025° in bond angles). In the course of this study, we analyzed a known issue for some $r$$^{SE}_{e}$ structure determinations of near-oblate asymmetric tops in which inclusion of individual isotopologues degrades the structure determination. We demonstrate that this problem primarily arises from the difference in the values of the computed vibration–rotation interaction corrections as evaluated at the computed re geometry vs the $r$$^{SE}_{e}$ geometry of the “real” molecule. Our solution to this problem substantially improves the $r$$^{SE}_{e}$ structure of oxazole and likely can be generalized to many other molecules.

Quasi-one-dimensional Pb 5 Re 3 O 15 : A 5 d realization of the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain

Quasi-one-dimensional (1D) magnetic compounds connect the exact solutions of low-dimensional magnetic geometries, which promise quantum spin liquid behavior and exotic quasiparticles, with real-world materials, in which competing magnetic interactions affect their implementation in quantum information science. Here, the structural determination and quasi-1D magnetic behavior of a previously unreported compound, Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 , is presented. Like the anisotropic triangular A 3 ⁢ReO 5 ⁢Cl 2 (A = Ba, Sr, Ca) materials, Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 contains [ReO 5 ] square pyramids inserted into anion-centered quasi-two-dimensional layers and hosts spin-1/2 moments on the Re 6+ ions. Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 , however, has a more ideal quasi-1D geometry than the A 3 ⁢ReO 5 ⁢Cl 2 materials, with larger interchain distances and interlayer spacing. Quasi-1D magnetic behavior in Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 is confirmed by fitting the temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility with the Bonner-Fisher model for a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetically coupled chain, yielding an intrachain coupling constant of |J|/k B =54.5K. Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 is highly insulating at room temperature, and heat capacity data below 10 K reveal a linear-T contribution that suggests the presence of low-temperature spinon excitations. Finally, with a lack of three-dimensional ordering down to at least 0.6 K, Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 is proposed as a model system for studying the quantum magnetism of quasi-1D Heisenberg chains in a real-world 5d 1 antiferromagnetic material.
