Smart sensor for online situational awareness in power grids

Waveforms in power grids typically reveal a certain pattern with specific features and peculiarities driven by the system operating conditions, internal and external uncertainties, etc. This prompts an observation of different types of waveforms at the measurement points (substations). An innovative next-generation smart sensor technology includes a measurement unit embedded with sophisticated analytics for power grid online surveillance and situational awareness. The smart sensor brings additional levels of smartness into the existing phasor measurement units (PMUs) and intelligent electronic devices (IEDs). It unlocks the full potential of advanced signal processing and machine learning for online power grid monitoring in a distributed paradigm. Within the smart sensor are several interconnected units for signal acquisition, feature extraction, machine learning-based event detection, and a suite of multiple measurement algorithms where the best-fit algorithm is selected in real-time based on the detected operating condition. Embedding such analytics within the sensors and closer to where the data is generated, the distributed intelligence mechanism mitigates the potential risks to communication failures and latencies, as well as malicious cyber threats, which would otherwise compromise the trustworthiness of the end-use applications in distant control centers. The smart sensor achieves a promising classification accuracy on multiple classes of prevailing conditions in the power grid and accordingly improves the measurement quality across the power grid.

Generation of group constants at GRS for the Rostov-2 benchmark

The OECD/NEA benchmark entitled 'Reactivity compensation of boron dilution by stepwise insertion of control rod cluster into the VVER-1000 core' aims at validating and assessing high fidelity multi-physics simulation code capabilities by comparison with the high-quality measurements performed at the nuclear power plant Rostov unit 2. The benchmark is divided into 2 phases: assembly wise and pin-by-pin resolution of the multi-physics problems. Multi-physics simulation requires the generation of an accurate parametrized few-group cross-section library, and so this benchmark offers an opportunity to validate the methodology for their generation. Based on the specifications of the benchmark, the core simulator KMACS developed at GRS was used to generate a library of cross-sections as well as the burnup distribution required to model the transient scenario of the benchmark at the assembly level. The assessment of the library is performed through comparison with measured values obtained at the initial state of the transient. Good agreement was obtained in terms of critical boron concentration, peaking factors and power profiles. (authors)

Composite fermion mass: Experimental measurements in ultrahigh quality two-dimensional electron systems

Composite fermions (CFs), exotic quasiparticles formed by pairing an electron and an even number of magnetic flux quanta, emerge at high magnetic fields in an interacting electron system, and can explain phenomena such as the fractional quantum Hall state (FQHS) and other many-body phases. CFs possess an effective mass (m CF ) whose magnitude is inversely related to the most fundamental property of a FQHS, namely its energy gap. Here we present here experimental measurements of m CF in ultrahigh quality two-dimensional electron systems confined to GaAs quantum wells of varying thickness. An advantage of measuring m CF over gap measurements is that mass values are insensitive to disorder and are therefore ideal for comparison with theoretical calculations, especially for high-order FQHS. Our data reveal that m CF increases with increasing well width, reflecting a decrease in the energy gap as the electron layer becomes thicker and the in-plane Coulomb energy softens. Comparing our measured masses with available theoretical results, we find significant quantitative discrepancies, highlighting that more rigorous and accurate calculations are needed to explain the experimental data.
