1d-Convolutional Neural Network Architecture for Generalized Time-Segmentation Tasks

Time segmentation of experimental data is a common and often difficult task. Consequently, it is of interest to automate this type of segmentation to reduce manual inputs, which are labor intensive and less consistent. However, simple thresholding algorithms are often insufficiently robust due either to noise or inconsistent data. This paper proposes a simple 1D CNN architecture as a generalized solution for typical time segmentation tasks. The layer architecture, training methods, and methods for simple customization are described as well as the results of application to three separate arc jet data streams: facility condition segmentation, video highlight segmentation, and calorimeter time-series segmentation.

Array processor architecture connection network

A connection network is disclosed for use between a parallel array of processors and a parallel array of memory modules for establishing non-conflicting data communications paths between requested memory modules and requesting processors. The connection network includes a plurality of switching elements interposed between the processor array and the memory modules array in an Omega networking architecture. Each switching element includes a first and a second processor side port, a first and a second memory module side port, and control logic circuitry for providing data connections between the first and second processor ports and the first and second memory module ports. The control logic circuitry includes strobe logic for examining data arriving at the first and the second processor ports to indicate when the data arriving is requesting data from a requesting processor to a requested memory module. Further, connection circuitry is associated with the strobe logic for examining requesting data arriving at the first and the second processor ports for providing a data connection therefrom to the first and the second memory module ports in response thereto when the data connection so provided does not conflict with a pre-established data connection currently in use.

Ultraviolet Superradiance from Mega-Networks of Tryptophan in Biological Architectures

Networks of tryptophan (Trp)–an aromatic amino acid with strong fluorescence response–are ubiquitous in biological systems, forming diverse architectures in transmembrane proteins, cytoskeletal filaments, subneuronal elements, photoreceptor complexes, virion capsids, and other cellular structures. We analyze the cooperative effects induced by ultraviolet (UV) excitation of several biologically relevant Trp mega-networks, thus giving insights into novel mechanisms for cellular signaling and control. Our theoretical analysis in the single-excitation manifold predicts the formation of strongly superradiant states due to collective interactions among organized arrangements of up to >10 5 Trp UV-excited transition dipoles in microtubule architectures, which leads to an enhancement of the fluorescence quantum yield (QY) that is confirmed by our experiments. We demonstrate the observed consequences of this superradiant behavior in the fluorescence QY for hierarchically organized tubulin structures, which increases in different geometric regimes at thermal equilibrium before saturation, highlighting the effect’s persistence in the presence of disorder. Our work thus showcases the many orders of magnitude across which the brightest (hundreds of femtoseconds) and darkest (tens of seconds) states can coexist in these Trp lattices.

Improved Architectures and Training Algorithms for Deep Operator Networks

Operator learning techniques have recently emerged as a powerful tool for learning maps between infinite-dimensional Banach spaces. Trained under appropriate constraints, they can also be effective in learning the solution operator of partial differential equations (PDEs) in an entirely self-supervised manner. In this work we analyze the training dynamics of deep operator networks (DeepONets) through the lens of Neural Tangent Kernel theory, and reveal a bias that favors the approximation of functions with larger magnitudes. To correct this bias we propose to adaptively re-weight the importance of each training example, and demonstrate how this procedure can effectively balance the magnitude of back-propagated gradients during training via gradient descent. We also propose a novel network architecture that is more resilient to vanishing gradient pathologies. Taken together, our developments provide new insights into the training of DeepONets and consistently improve their predictive accuracy by a factor of 10-50x, demonstrated in the challenging setting of learning PDE solution operators in the absence of paired input-output observations.

Navigation Architecture for a Space Mobile Network

The Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) Augmentation Service for Satellites (TASS) is a proposed beacon service to provide a global, space based GPS augmentation service based on the NASA Global Differential GPS (GDGPS) System. The TASS signal will be tied to the GPS time system and usable as an additional ranging and Doppler radiometric source. Additionally, it will provide data vital to autonomous navigation in the near Earth regime, including space weather information, TDRS ephemerides, Earth Orientation Parameters (EOP), and forward commanding capability. TASS benefits include enhancing situational awareness, enabling increased autonomy, and providing near real-time command access for user platforms. As NASA Headquarters' Space Communication and Navigation Office (SCaN) begins to move away from a centralized network architecture and towards a Space Mobile Network (SMN) that allows for user initiated services, autonomous navigation will be a key part of such a system. This paper explores how a TASS beacon service enables the Space Mobile Networking paradigm, what a typical user platform would require, and provides an in-depth analysis of several navigation scenarios and operations concepts. This paper provides an overview of the TASS beacon and its role within the SMN and user community. Supporting navigation analysis is presented for two user mission scenarios: an Earth observing spacecraft in low earth orbit (LEO), and a highly elliptical spacecraft in a lunar resonance orbit. These diverse flight scenarios indicate the breadth of applicability of the TASS beacon for upcoming users within the current network architecture and in the SMN.

Service-Based, Segmented, 5G Network-Based Architecture for Securing Distributed Energy Resources: Preprint

As the number of connected devices in the energy grid increase exponentially, so too are the cybersecurity risks. With the development of modern communications standards such as 5G and beyond the extent to which devices will continue to connect will continue to increase exponentially along with the inherent risks. However, 5G also includes features to help address cybersecurity concerns and therefore helping to mitigate many of these risks. This paper proposes a new service-based network architecture implementing network-slicing capabilities for connected systems and devices to improve performance, availability, security, and reliability of the grid devices and services. This paper considers the quality of service requirements and criticality of services needed for securely monitoring, operating, and securing Distributed Energy Resource (DER) devices. From developed use cases, network slicing is implemented based on these requirements and resource allocations. This work then highlights examples of how slicing can help prevent standard existing attack methods such as a denial-of-service or similar attack which limits resource availability and network bandwidth to the service and thus limiting its ability to affect other services by misbehaving. The designed network architecture use case will be further tested on a local virtualized testbed to verify secure operation and availability of services. Using hardware-in-the-loop devices and systems on this local testbed, this fully segmented, secure network may be realized and evaluated. Finally, this paper presents the results of this testing.

Parallel Consensual Neural Networks

A new neural network architecture is proposed and applied in classification of remote sensing/geographic data from multiple sources. The new architecture is called the parallel consensual neural network and its relation to hierarchical and ensemble neural networks is discussed. The parallel consensual neural network architecture is based on statistical consensus theory. The input data are transformed several times and the different transformed data are applied as if they were independent inputs and are classified using stage neural networks. Finally, the outputs from the stage networks are then weighted and combined to make a decision. Experimental results based on remote sensing data and geographic data are given. The performance of the consensual neural network architecture is compared to that of a two-layer (one hidden layer) conjugate-gradient backpropagation neural network. The results with the proposed neural network architecture compare favorably in terms of classification accuracy to the backpropagation method.

Neural architecture search via similarity adaptive guidance

Evolutionary neural network architecture search (ENAS) has attracted the attention of many experts due to its global optimization capabilities to automatically search for convolutional neural network architectures based on the target task. The current search space for ENAS is not to design a fully structured network, but to search for smaller cell architectures to reduce search costs. However, blind search strategies do not effectively utilize the potential experience of the population. In order to utilize the potential experience learned by the current population to guide the evolutionary search of the population, we propose a similarity guided neural network architecture search algorithm based on cell architecture, which utilizes the similarity between pairwise architectures in the population as empirical knowledge learned by the population. Our proposed algorithm provides a novel method for calculating architecture similarity, which calculates architecture similarity separately from the cell and macro-structure. Then we decouple the connections and operations in the cell and calculate connection and operation similarity separately. In addition, we propose adaptive similarity selection and binary tournament selection strategies to enhance the algorithm’s global and local search capabilities and effectively explore the search space. Finally, we design an improved single-point crossover operator to enhance the local search ability of the evolutionary operator. The experimental results show that SAGNAS is a competitive algorithm that achieves 97.44% and 81.60% in CIFAR10 and CIFAR100 with only 1.9 GPU-days spent.

Evolutionary Architecture Search for Generative Adversarial Networks Based on Weight Sharing

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are a powerful generative technique but frequently face challenges with training stability. Network architecture plays a significant role in determining the final output of GANs, but designing a fine architecture demands extensive domain expertise. This article aims to address this issue by searching for high-performance generator’s architectures through neural architecture search (NAS). The proposed approach, called evolutionary weight sharing GANs (EWSGAN), is based on weight sharing and comprises two steps. First, a supernet of the generator is trained using weight sharing. Second, a multiobjective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) is employed to identify optimal subnets from the supernet. These subnets inherit weights directly from the supernet for fitness assessment. Two strategies are used to stabilize the training of the generator supernet: 1) a fair single-path sampling strategy and 2) a discarding strategy. Experimental results indicate that the architecture searched by our method achieved a new state-of-the-art among NAS–GAN methods with a Fréchet inception distance (FID) of 9.09 and an inception score (IS) of 8.99 on the CIFAR-10 dataset. Finally, it also demonstrates competitive performance on the STL-10 dataset, achieving FID of 21.89 and IS of 10.51.
