Heterogeneous Outgassing Regions Identified on Active Centaur 29P/Schwassmann–Wachmann 1

Centaurs are transitional objects between primitive trans-Neptunian objects and Jupiter-family comets. Their compositions and activities provide fundamental clues regarding the processes affecting the evolution of and interplay between these small bodies. Here we report observations of centaur 29P/Schwassmann–Wachmann 1 (29P) with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We identified localized jets with heterogeneous compositions driving the outgassing activity. We employed the NIRSpec mapping spectrometer to study the fluorescence emissions of CO and obtain a definitive detection of CO 2 for this target. The exquisite sensitivity of the instrument also enabled carbon and oxygen isotopic signatures to be probed. Molecular maps reveal complex outgassing distributions, such as jets and anisotropic morphology, which indicate that 29P’s nucleus is dominated by active regions with heterogeneous compositions. These distributions could reflect that it has a bilobate structure with compositionally distinct components or that strong differential erosion takes place on the nucleus. As there are no missions currently planning to visit a centaur, these observations demonstrate JWST’s unique capabilities in characterizing these objects.

Thermal Stability and Outgassing Behaviors of High–nickel Cathodes in Lithium–ion Batteries

LiNiO 2 -based high-nickel layered oxide cathodes are regarded as promising cathode materials for high-energy-density automotive lithium batteries. Most of the attention thus far has been paid towards addressing their surface and structural instability issues brought by the increase of Ni content (>90 %) with an aim to enhance the cycle stability. However, the poor safety performance remains an intractable problem for their commercialization in the market, yet it has not received appropriate attention. In this review, we focus on the gas generation and thermal degradation behaviors of high-Ni cathodes, which are critical factors in determining their overall safety performance. Furthermore, a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms of outgassing and thermal runaway reactions is presented and analyzed from a chemistry perspective. Finally, we discuss the challenges and the insights into developing robust, safe high-Ni cathodes.

Determining Outgassing of Foam Packaging Material

When transporting highly radioactive material, it is vital to provide a successful delivery. Without proper containment, radioactive materials can become exposed to the surrounding environment and pose a serious threat. To ensure a safe transition of radioactive material, packaging components must be able to withstand high levels of heat during the event of a fire while maintaining the integrity of the structure to safety contain the radioactive material. Various types of polyurethane and silicone have been selected to observe at high temperatures to analyze outgassing characteristics of the materials.

Study of Poly(ether ketone ketone) (PEKK): Outgassing Characteristics and Likely Residual Synthesis Impurities

In May-June, 2020, a study was conducted to characterize the outgassing properties of a series PEKK (Poly(ether ketone ketone)) samples using cryo-GC/MS headspace analysis. Three sets of samples were interrogated: sample group 1 consisted of 2 additively manufactured PEKK samples (PEKK "ole and "New") prepared by KCNSC from powder material from Solvay Specialty Polymers USA, LLC. Sample groups 2 and 3 consist of 5 PEKK powder types (used as feedstock for additive manufacturing processes) and 4 additively-manufactured PEKK material lots, respectively. Contrary to expectations, all samples of PEKK material were observed to outgas sulfur-containing compounds. Other analyses (EDS/EMA, GC-TOF/MS of PEKK sample extractions) confirmed the presence of sulfur in the PEKK bulk material. Specifically, Diphenyl sulfone (used as a reagent or high-temperature solvent in the synthesis of Polyaryletherketone or PAEK polymers) was observed in three of the powders and in both the PEKK "Old" and "New" samples, suggesting that the source of the sulfur can be traced to impurities in the material left over from the synthesis process.
