Demonstration of a Compact Franson Interferometer for Highly Non-degenerate Time-energy Entangled Photons

We present results from a time-energy entanglement Bell inequality violation measurement of two highly non-degenerate photons using a compact Franson interferometer. The entangled photons are generated via the spontaneous parametric downconversion of a 532 nm pump photon into time-energy and polarization degrees of freedom hyper-entangled 810 nm and 1550 nm photons. The source is a type II periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) crystal with a fiber-coupled input and free-space output. These wavelengths are of particular interest as they lie at the intersection of free-space quantum communication and terrestrial entanglement distribution due to 810 nm undergoing little atmospheric absorption, making it a candidate for satellite to ground quantum links. Furthermore, 1550 nm is capable of directly interfacing with existing telecommunications infrastructure. We report an initial violation of Bell's inequality by more than 3 standard deviations and describe efforts to improve upon this while maintaining stable operation in a low size, weight, and power (SWaP) package.

Non-linear wave interaction in a plasma column

Non-linear three-wave interaction is analysed for propagation along a cylindrical plasma column surrounded by an infinite dielectric, in the absence of a static magnetic field. An averaged-Lagrangian method is used, and the results are specialized to parametric interaction and mode conversion, assuming an undepleted pump wave. The theory for these two types of interactions is extended to include imperfect synchronism, and the effects of loss. Computations are presented indicating that parametric growth rates of the order of a fraction of a decibel per centimeter should be obtainable for plausible laboratory plasma column parameters.

Parametric thermodynamic analysis of closed-cycle gas-laser operation in space

Cycle efficiency and radiator area required were calculated for thermally and electrically pumped lasers operating in closed cycles with a compressor and the required heat exchangers. A thermally pumped laser included within a Brayton cycle was also analyzed. Performance of all components, including the laser, was parametrically varied. For the thermally pumped laser the cycle efficiencies range below 10 percent and are very sensitive to the high-pressure losses associated with the supersonic diffuser required at the laser cavity exit. The efficiencies predicted for the electrically pumped laser cycles range slightly higher, but radiator area also tends to be larger.

6 um Pulsed OP-GaAs OPO Laser for Unambiguous Water Ice Detection on the Moon and Other Planetary Bodies

NASA demands a laser transmitter for planetary remote sensing to detect water-ice on the Moon and other planetary bodies. Based on the measurement of the Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) instrument, the discovery of water ice on the Moon was acclaimed, but the measurement is disputed because OH- and/or H2O-bearing materials share the absorption line around 3 μm wavelength. Lunar Flashlight, another mission project exploring the surface of Moon which will be launched later this year, enables to map the minerals on dark area of the Moon, but could not resolve the above-mentioned ambiguity. The absorption of 6.08 μm light is uniquely associated with the bending resonance of H2O since there is no comparable vibration in confounding OH-bearing materials. 6.08 μm laser between the atmospheric windows: middle-wave infrared (3-5 μm) and long-wave infrared (8-12 μm) has not been commercially available. Our approach is a Q-switched Ho:YLF laser pumped the orientation-pattern Gallium Arsenide optical parametric oscillator (OP-GaAs OPO) for generating high-energy laser pulses at the wavelength of 6.08 μm. In the current design, a 1.94 μm Tm:fiber is used as the pump source. In the compact design, a 1.94 μm laser diode will replace the Tm:fiber laser as the pump source. We will combine this proposed mid-infrared laser with the latest HgCdTe avalanche photodiode (APD) array to design a lidar for detecting water ice on the Moon and Mars from their respective orbits, enabling novel science and in-situ resource utilization. Our instrument is an enabling technology aboard the Artemis program and others.

Computer codes were developed for fragmentation and secondary radiation affecting Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) in space. A computer controlled CV (HP4192) test was developed for Terman analysis. Also developed were high speed parametric tests which are independent of operator judgment and a charge pumping technique for measurement of D(sub it) (E). The X-ray secondary effects, and parametric degradation as a function of dose rate were simulated. The SPICE simulation of static RAMs with various resistor filters was tested.

Parametric instabilities of parallel-propagating Alfven waves: Some analytical results

We consider the stability of a circularly polarized Alfven wave (the pump wave) which propagates parallel to the ambient magnetic field. Only parallel-propagating perturbations are considered, and we ignore dispersive effects due to the ion cyclotron frequency. The dissipationless MHD equations are used throughout; thus possibibly important effects arising from Landau and transit time damping are omitted. We derive a series of analytical approximations to the dispersion relation using A = (Delta B/B(sub O))(exp 2) as a small expansion parameter; Delta B is the pump amplitude, and B(sub O) is the ambient magnetic field strength. We find that the plasma beta (the square of the ratio of the sound speed to the Alfven speed) plays a crucial role in determining the behavior of the parametric instabilities of the pump. If 0 less than beta less than 1 we find the familiar result that the pump decays into a forward propagating sound wave and a backward propagating Alfven wave with maximum growth rate gamma(sub max) varies A(sup 1/2), but beta cannot be too close to 0 or to 1. If beta approx. 1, we find gamma(sub max) varies A(sup 3/4), if beta greater than 1, we find gamma(sub max) varies A(sup 3/2), while if beta approx. 0, we obtain gamma(sub max) varies A(sup 1/3); moreover, if beta approx. 0 there is a nearly purely growing instability. In constrast to the familiar decay instability, for which the backward propagating Alfven wave has lower frequency and wavenumber than the pump, we find that if beta greater than or approx. equal to 1 the instability is really a beat instability which is dominated by a transverse wave which is forward propagating and has frequency and wavenumber which are nearly twice the pump values. Only the decay instability for 0 less than beta less than 1 can be regarded as producing two recognizable normal modes, namely, a sound wave and an Alfven wave. We discuss how the different characteristics of the instabilities may affect the evolution of Alfven waves in the solar wind. However, for a solar wind in which beta approx. 1 the growth times of the instabilities are probably too long for these instabilities to have an appreciable effect inside 1 AU.

Enhanced stimulated Raman scattering during intense laser propagation

Stimulated Raman scattering is ubiquitous in many high-intensity laser environments. Parametric four-wave mixing between the pump and Raman sidebands can affect the Raman gain, but stringent phase matching requirements and strongly nonlinear dynamics obscure clear understanding of its effects at high laser powers. Here we investigate four-wave mixing in the presence of strong self-focusing and weak ionization at laser powers above the Kerr critical power. Theoretical analysis shows that the plasma generated at focus naturally leads to phase matching conditions suitable for enhanced Raman gain, almost without regard to the initial phase mismatch. Multidimensional nonlinear optical simulations with multiphoton and collisional ionization confirm the enhancement and suggest that it may lead to significantly higher Raman losses in some high-intensity laser environments.

The theory of parametric amplification by a series of unbiased Josephson junctions is presented. The various regimes of operation are explored. This device is different in many ways from the usual varactor parametric amplifier. In particular, a very small pump power is required, and a large bandwidth is obtained. Comparison with experimental data is made.

Magnetized laser–plasma interactions in high-energy-density systems: Parallel propagation

In this study, we investigate parametric processes in magnetized plasmas, driven by a large-amplitude pump light wave. Our focus is on laser–plasma interactions relevant to high-energy-density (HED) systems, such as the National Ignition Facility and the Sandia MagLIF concept. We present a self-contained derivation of a “parametric” dispersion relation for magnetized three-wave interactions, meaning the pump wave is included in the equilibrium, similar to the unmagnetized work of Drake et al., Phys. Fluids 17, 778 (1974). For this, we use a multi-species plasma fluid model and Maxwell's equations. The application of an external B field causes right- and left-polarized light waves to propagate with differing phase velocities. This leads to Faraday rotation of the polarization, which can be significant in HED conditions. Phase-matching and linear wave dispersion relations show that Raman and Brillouin scattering have modified spectra due to the background B field, though this effect is usually small in systems of current practical interest. We study a scattering process we call stimulated whistler scattering, where a light wave decays to an electromagnetic whistler wave (ω≲ω ce ) and a Langmuir wave. This only occurs in the presence of an external B field, which is required for the whistler wave to exist.

Ytterbium laser system for studying parametric amplification of femtosecond pulses with a centre wavelength of ∼2 μm

A laser system is developed with an optical synchronisation of a femtosecond signal with a pump channel. The signal of a driving ytterbium fibre laser with a 60 MHz repetition rate of stretched femtosecond pulses is amplified in energy from several nanojoules to 0.4 mJ at a pulse repetition rate of 3 kHz in a wideband amplifier and then is compressed in time to 250 fs. The obtained radiation is used for generating femtosecond laser pulses with a centre wavelength of ∼2 μm, pulse energy of above 20 μJ, duration of several field oscillations, and phase stabilisation between the electromagnetic field and envelope. The other pulse of the driving fibre laser provides optical synchronisation and a minimal time delay and is directed to a regenerative Yb : YAG disk amplifier for amplification to an energy of 4 mJ at a pulse repetition rate of 3 kHz and duration of 20 ps. A multipass disk amplifier is developed for further increasing the energy of pump chirped pulses to an energy of 70 mJ at a pulse repetition rate of 10 Hz and duration of 400 ps for studying parametric amplification under sub-nanosecond pumping. Interferometric two-photon-absorption spectroscopy with three entangled photons

In this work, we propose an interferometric pump-probe technique that employs three entangled photons generated by cascaded spontaneous parametric downconversion. A Mach–Zehnder interferometer made of two three-port waveguide arrays is inserted in the optical path. Two independent phases introduced to manipulate the entangled photon state serve as control parameters and can selectively excite matter pathways. Compared to two-photon-absorption of an entangled photon-pair, the three-photon signals are significantly enhanced by frequency-dispersed photon-counting detection.

Parametrically amplified Josephson plasma waves in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6+ x : Evidence for local superconducting fluctuations up to the pseudogap temperature T ∗

Experiments that subject underdoped YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6+x (YBCO) to intense terahertz pulses at temperatures between the transition temperature T c and the pseudogap scale T ∗ have revealed a reflectivity edge that resembles that of the superconducting state, together with second harmonic generation of a probe pulse modulated at a similar frequency. These have been interpreted in terms of parametric amplification of the lower Josephson plasmon mode. Since this mode is often associated with coherent oscillations between bilayers in the YBCO structure, these experiments have led to the suggestion that the intense pump has created (or revealed) in-plane pair coherence up to T ∗ ≈ 400 K. In this paper we propose an alternative explanation by assuming the existence of local pair amplitude and phase at equilibrium for T c < T < T ∗ . The phase correlation spans only a few lattice constants and we do not assume any pump-induced enhancement of this correlation, either in-plane or between bilayers. Instead, the coherent drive, via a parametric amplification process, induces coherence in the Josephson currents between members of bilayers. When combined with a Floquet framework, the reflectivity data can be explained. The key point is that in the lower Josephson plasmon, the coupling between bilayers is mainly capacitive; the Josephson current between bilayers can be set to zero without strongly affecting the parametric amplification process. Importantly, while superconducting coherence may not be created by the pump, the pseudogap phase must possess a local pairing amplitude at equilibrium. Consequently, these experiments have strong implications for the understanding of the pseudogap phase.

Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) LOX turbopump pump-end bearing analysis

A simulation of the shaft/bearing system of the Space Shuttle Main Engine Liquid Oxygen turbopump was developed. The simulation model allows the thermal and mechanical characteristics to interact as a realistic simulation of the bearing operating characteristics. The model accounts for single and two phase coolant conditions, and includes the heat generation from bearing friction and fluid stirring. Using the simulation model, parametric analyses were performed on the 45 mm pump-end bearings to investigate the sensitivity of bearing characteristics to contact friction, axial preload, coolant flow rate, coolant inlet temperature and quality, heat transfer coefficients, outer race clearance and misalignment, and the effects of thermally isolating the outer race from the isolator.

Coupling magnons to an opto-electronic parametric oscillator

Hybrid magnonic systems have emerged as versatile modular components for quantum signal transduction and sensing applications owing to their capability of connecting distinct quantum platforms. To date, the majority of the magnonic systems have been explored in a local, near-field scheme, due to the close proximity required for realizing a strong coupling between magnons and other excitations. This constraint greatly limits the applicability of magnons in developing remotely coupled, distributed quantum network systems. On the contrary, opto-electronic architectures hosting self-sustained oscillations have been a unique platform for long-haul signal transmission and processing. Here, we integrated an opto-electronic oscillator with a magnonic oscillator consisting of a microwave waveguide and a Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 (YIG) sphere, and demonstrated strong and coherent coupling between YIG’s magnon modes and the opto-electronic oscillator’s characteristic photon modes—revealing the hallmark anti-crossing gap in the measured spectrum. In particular, the photon mode is produced on-demand via a nonlinear, parametric process as stipulated by an external seed pump. Both the internal cavity phase and the external pump phase can be precisely tuned to stabilize either degenerate or nondegenerate auto-oscillations. Our result lays out a new, hybrid platform for investigating the long-distance coupling and nonlinearity in coherent magnonic phenomena, which may be found useful in constructing the future “distributed hybrid magnonic systems.”

Amplification of 10 μm picosecond pulses in a compact optically pumped multiatmosphere CO 2 laser

Picosecond pulses, generated by a commercial mid-IR optical parametric source (∼0.5 ps, 1-5 μJ), have been regeneratively amplified to an energy of ≤2 mJ in a palm-size high-pressure CO 2 amplifier optically pumped by a Q-switched 2.8 μm Cr:Er:YSGG laser. The characteristics of the amplified pulses have been studied as a function of seed wavelength centered around 10.3 or 10.6 μm, and the pressure in the gain medium. The measured amplified pulse length is ∼5 ps. Numerical modeling suggests that pulses as short as ∼0.5 ps with multi-GW peak power can be generated in a mixture of CO 2 isotopes. Robustness of the output of a compact CO 2 regenerative amplifier to the seed and pump fluctuations measured at 3 Hz and a perfect Gaussian beam profile indicates the potential of such laser technology for producing high-power ultrashort long-wave infrared pulses at high repetition rates.
