Transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions up to N 3 LL from Drell-Yan data

We present an extraction of unpolarised Transverse-Momentum-Dependent Parton Distribution Functions (TMD PDFs or TMDs) based on Drell-Yan production data from different experiments, including those at the LHC, and spanning a wide kinematic range. We include resummation of leading logarithms up to N 3 LL accuracy. The high per- turbative accuracy and the inclusion of non-perturbative contributions, along with a sound treatment of the experimental uncertainties, allow us to obtain a remarkable agreement with the data. We show that higher-order perturbative corrections are in fact crucial to achieve a suitable description of the data. In addition, we show that the precise rapidity- differential cross sections measured by the ATLAS experiment at 7 and 8 TeV provide a marked sensitivity to the x dependence of TMDs.

Determination of the parton distribution functions of the proton from ATLAS measurements of differential W ± and Z boson production in association with jets

This article presents a new set of proton parton distribution functions, AT-LASepWZVjet20, produced in an analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD. The new data sets considered are the measurements of W + and W - boson and Z boson production in association with jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8TeV performed by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC with integrated luminosities of 20.2 fb -1 and 19.9 fb -1 , respectively. The analysis also considers the ATLAS measurements of differential W ± and Z boson production at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7TeV with an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb -1 and deep-inelastic-scattering data from e ± p collisions at the HERA accelerator. An improved determination of the sea-quark densities at high Bjorken x is shown, while confirming a strange-quark density similar in size to the up- and down-sea-quark densities in the range x ≲ 0.02 found by previous ATLAS analyses.

Notes on lattice observables for parton distributions: nongauge theories

We review recent theoretical developments concerning the definition and the renormalization of equal-time correlators that can be computed on the lattice and related to Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) through a factorization formula. We show how these objects can be studied and analyzed within the framework of a nongauge theory, gaining insight through a one-loop computation. We use scalar field theory as a playground to revise, analyze and present the main features of these ideas, to explore their potential, and to understand their limitations for extracting PDFs. We then propose a framework that would allow to include the available lattice QCD data in a global analysis to extract PDFs.

Analytic amplitudes for a pair of Higgs bosons in association with three partons

The pair production of Higgs bosons at the LHC can give information about the triple Higgs boson coupling. We perform an analytic one-loop calculation of the amplitudes for a pair of Higgs bosons in association with three partons, retaining the exact dependence on the quark mass circulating in the loop. These amplitudes constitute the real radiation corrections in the calculation of Higgs boson pair production at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling. The results of an analytic generalised-unitarity computation are simplified via analytic reconstruction in spinor variables. Compact ansätze for kinematic pole residues are iteratively fitted via p-adic evaluations near said poles and subtracted until no pole remains. A new ansatz construction is introduced to minimally parametrise coefficients of amplitudes with multiple massive external legs. The simplified expressions are faster to evaluate than automatic codes and can lead to more stable results near singular regions.

The continuum and leading twist limits of parton distribution functions in lattice QCD

In this study, we present continuum limit results for the unpolarized parton distribution function of the nucleon computed in lattice QCD. This study is the first continuum limit using the pseudo-PDF approach with Short Distance Factorization for factorizing lattice QCD calculable matrix elements. Our findings are also compared with the pertinent phenomenological determinations. Inter alia, we are employing the summation Generalized Eigenvalue Problem (sGEVP) technique in order to optimize our control over the excited state contamination which can be one of the most serious systematic errors in this type of calculations. A crucial novel ingredient of our analysis is the parameterization of systematic errors using Jacobi polynomials to characterize and remove both lattice spacing and higher twist contaminations, as well as the leading twist distribution. This method can be expanded in further studies to remove all other systematic errors.

Generalized parton distributions and gravitational form factors at large momentum transfer

Within the soft collinear effective theory (SCET), we derive a factorization theorem which resums Sudakov logarithms (α s ln 2 ( –t)) n to all orders in the quark-in-quark generalized parton distribution (GPD) at large momentum transfer t, and perform a consistency check to one-loop. We show that the same Sudakov factor appears in the ‘Feynman’ contribution to the GPDs of the nucleon. Our result enables the resummation of all the large logarithms ln Q 2 and ln 2 t in exclusive processes with two hard scales Λ$^{2}_{QCD}$ ≪ |t| ≪ Q 2 . We also present a SCET power counting analysis of the Feynman contributions to the GPDs and show that the x-dependence of GPDs factorizes at large-t with controlled corrections. This in particular implies that any ratio of GPD moments such as the electromagnetic and gravitational form factors (GFF) is perturbatively calculable in this approximation. Furthermore, we identify a novel order α s power-law t-dependence in the GPD and the D-type GFF that will dominate over the standard order α$^{2}_{s}$ ‘leading twist’ asymptotic contribution in the phenomenologically relevant region of t.

Kernel methods for evolution of generalized parton distributions

Generalized parton distributions (GPDs) characterize the 3-dimensional structure of hadrons, combining information about their internal quark and gluon longitudinal momentum distributions and transverse position within the hadron. The dependence of GPDs on the factorization scale Q 2 allows one to connect hard exclusive processes involving GPDs at disparate energy and momentum scales, which is needed in global analyses of experimental data. Here, in this work, we explore how finite element methods can be used to construct fast and differentiable Q 2 evolution codes for GPDs in momentum space, which can be used in a machine learning framework. We show numerical benchmarks of the methods' accuracy, including a comparison to an existing evolution code from PARTONS/APFEL++, and provide a repository where the code can be accessed.

Gluon parton distribution of the pion from lattice QCD

We present the first determination of the x-dependent pion gluon distribution from lattice QCD using the pseudo-PDF approach. We use lattice ensembles with 2+1+1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ), generated by MILC Collaboration, at two lattice spacings a ≈ 0.12 and 0.15 fm and three pion masses M π ≈ 220, 310 and 690 MeV. We use clover fermions for the valence action and momentum smearing to achieve pion boost momentum up to 2.29 GeV. We find that the dependence of the pion gluon parton distribution on lattice spacing and pion mass is mild. We compare our results from the lightest pion mass ensemble with the determination by JAM and xFitter global fits.

Nucleon helicity generalized parton distribution at physical pion mass from lattice QCD

The generalized parton distributions (GPDs) offer a window on three-dimensional imaging of the nucleon, providing understanding of how the fundamental properties of the nucleon, such as its mass and spin, arise from the underlying quark and gluon degrees of freedom. In this work, we present the first lattice calculation of the nucleon isovector helicity GPD at physical pion mass, using an a≈0.09 fm lattice ensemble with 2+1+1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks generated by MILC Collaboration. We perform the GPD calculation in Breit frame using averaged nucleon boost momentum P z ≈2.2 GeV with nonzero momentum transfers in [0.2,1.0] GeV 2 . Nonperturbative renormalization in RI/MOM scheme is used to obtain the quasi-distribution before matching to the lightcone GPDs. The three-dimensional distribution $\tilde{H}$(x, Q 2 ) is presented, along with the three-dimensional nucleon tomography and impact-parameter-dependent distribution for selected Bjorken x at μ=3 GeV in $\overline{MS}$ scheme.

Understanding parton evolution in matter from renormalization group analysis

We perform a renormalization group (RG) analysis of collinear hadron production in deep inelastic scattering on nuclei. We consider the limit where the parent parton energy E is large, while the medium opacity remains small. We identify the fixed order and leading enhanced medium contributions to the semi-inclusive cross sections and derive RG equations that resum multiple emissions near the endpoints of the splitting functions at first order in opacity. These evolution equations treat the same type of radiation enhancement in matter as the modified Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi approach, but differ in the way one regulates the collinear divergences. They provide a unique analytic insight into the problem of resummation and a faster and more efficient path to phenomenology. The new RG evolution framework is applied to study fragmentation in eA reactions.

Directed flow from parton spin-orbit coupling in $pp$ and $pA$ collisions

We point out a novel mechanism to generate cos φ two-particle azimuthal correlation (‘directed flow’) in unpolarized proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions in the forward rapidity region of the projectile proton. This is a direct consequence of the recently discovered strong spin-orbit coupling in gluons at small-x. The observable simultaneously serves as a unique probe into the double helicity parton distribution functions of the proton.

Wee partons in QCD and gravity: Double copy and universality

We discuss a quantitative “double copy” between radiation from shockwave collisions in Einstein gravity and in QCD. The correspondence extends to 2 → N amplitudes in Regge asymptotics. The classicalization and unitarization of these amplitudes at maximal occupancy, corresponding to black hole and Color Glass Condensate (CGC) states respectively, are described by the emergent Goldstone dynamics of wee partons. We outline some consequences of the universal dynamics on both sides of the correspondence.

Toward the first gluon parton distribution from the LaMET

Abstract We present progress towards the first unpolarized gluon quasi-parton distribution function (PDF) from lattice quantum chromodynamics using high-statistics measurements for hadrons at two valence pion masses M π ≈ 310 and 690 MeV computed on an a ≈ 0.12 fm ensemble with 2 + 1 + 1-flavors of highly improved staggered quark generated by the MILC collaboration. In this study, we consider two gluon operators for which the hybrid-ratio renormalization matching kernels have been recently derived and a third operator that has been used in prior pseudo-PDF studies of the gluon PDFs. We compare the matrix elements for each operator for both the nucleon and pion, at both pion masses, and using two gauge-smearing techniques. Focusing on the more phenomenologically studied nucleon gluon PDF, we compare the ratio and hybrid-ratio renormalized matrix elements at both pion masses and both smearings to those reconstructed from the nucleon gluon PDF from the CT18 global analysis. We identify the best choice of operator to study the gluon PDF and present the first gluon quasi-PDF under some caveats. Additionally, we explore the recent idea of Coulomb gauge fixing to improve signal at large Wilson-line displacement and find it could be a major help in improving the signal in the gluon matrix elements. This work helps identify the best operator for studying the gluon quasi-PDF, shows higher hadron boost momentum is needed to implement hybrid-ratio renormalization reliably, and suggests the need to study more diverse set of operators with their corresponding perturbative calculations for hybrid-ratio renormalization to further gluon quasi-PDF study.

Simple algorithm for polarized parton evolution

We present an algorithm to include the correlation between the production and decay planes of gluons in a parton-shower simulation. The technique is based on identifying the charge currents responsible for the creation and annihilation of the vector field. It is applicable in both the hard-collinear and the soft wide-angle region. As a function of the number of particles, the algorithm scales linear in computing time and memory. We demonstrate agreement with fixed-order perturbative calculations in the relevant kinematical limits, and present a new observable that can be used to probe correlations beyond current-current interactions.

Third moments of nucleon unpolarized, polarized, and transversity parton distribution functions from physical-point lattice QCD

Using forward matrix elements of local leading-twist operators, we present a determination of the isovector third Mellin moments ⟨𝑥 2 ⟩ of nucleon unpolarized, polarized, and transversity parton distribution functions. Two lattice QCD ensembles at the physical pion mass are used, which were generated using a tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action and 2+1 flavor tree-level improved Wilson Clover fermions coupling via 2-level HEX-smearing. Leveraging a wide set of operators, two extraction methods for the matrix elements, and the automatic inclusion of model uncertainties via bootstrapped model averages, we extract values of the third Mellin moments. Furthermore, this is the first direct calculation of these observables performed at the physical pion mass.

Exploring the partonic collectivity in small systems at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Using the Hydro-Coal-Frag model that combines hydrodynamics at low p T , quark coalescence at intermediate p T , and the LBT transport model at high p T , we study the spectra and elliptic flow of identified hadrons in high multiplicity p–Pb and p–p collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In p–Pb collisions, the Hydro-Coal-Frag model gives a good description of the differential elliptic flow over the p T range from 0 to 6 GeV and the approximate number of constituent quark (NCQ) scaling at intermediate p T . Although the Hydro-Coal-Frag model can also roughly describe the elliptic flow in high multiplicity p–p collisions with the quark coalescence process, the larger contribution from the string fragmentations leads to a notable violation of the NCQ scaling of v 2 at intermediate p T as observed in the experiment. Comparison runs of the Hydro-Frag model without the coalescence process demonstrate that regardless the parameter adjustments, the Hydro-Frag model cannot simultaneously describe the p T spectra and the elliptic flow of identified hadrons in either p–Pb collisions or p–p collisions. In conclusion, the calculations in this paper thus provide support for the existence of partonic degrees of freedom and the possible formation of the QGP in the small systems created at the LHC.

First simultaneous global QCD analysis of kaon and pion parton distributions with lattice QCD constraints

We perform the first simultaneous global QCD analysis of pion and kaon parton distribution functions (PDFs) constrained by pion- and kaon-induced Drell-Yan (DY) and leading neutron electroproduction data together with lattice QCD data on pion and kaon PDF moments. The analysis indicates a softer valence u ¯ distribution in the K − than in the π − and a significantly more peaked valence s -quark density in K − compared with the u ¯ . The effective exponent governing the high- x behavior of the PDF is found to be larger for u ¯ in the kaon, β u ¯ K − = 1.6 ( 2 ) , than in the pion, β u ¯ π − = 1.16 ( 4 ) , in the range 0.7 ≤ x ≤ 0.95 . From the gluon momentum fractions, we find the pion’s gluon content accounts for ≈ 1 / 3 of the mass budget of the pion at μ = 2 GeV , but only ≈ 1 / 4 for the kaon.

Odd fracton theories, proximate orders, and parton constructions

The Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorem implies that gapped phases of matter must satisfy nontrivial conditions on their low-energy properties when a combination of lattice translation and U(1) symmetry are imposed. We describe a framework to characterize the action of symmetry on fractons and other subdimensional fractional excitations, and use this together with the LSM theorem to establish that X-cube fracton order can occur only at integer or half-odd-integer filling. Using explicit parton constructions, we demonstrate that “odd” versions of X-cube fracton order can occur in systems at half-odd-integer filling, generalizing the notion of odd Z 2 gauge theory to the fracton setting. At half-odd-integer filling, exiting the X-cube phase by condensing fractional quasiparticles leads to symmetry breaking, thereby allowing us to identify a class of conventionally ordered phases proximate to phases with fracton order. We leverage a dual description of one of these ordered phases to show that its topological defects naturally have restricted mobility. In conclusion, condensing pairs of these defects then leads to a fracton phase, whose excitations inherit these mobility restrictions.
