Building [U IV 70 (OH) 36 (O) 64 ] 4– oxocluster frameworks with sulfate, transition metals, and U V

Uranium (IV) oxide clusters, colloids, and materials are designed and studied for 1) nuclear materials applications, 2) understanding environmental fate and transport of actinides, and 3) exploring the complex bonding behavior of open-shell f-elements. U IV -oxyhydroxsulfate clusters are particularly relevant in industrial processes and in nature. Recent studies have shown that counter-cations to these polynuclear anions differentiate rich structural topologies in the solid-state. Here we present nine different structures with wheel-shaped [U 70 (OH) 36 (O) 64 (SO 4 ) 60 ] 4- (U 70 ) linked into 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional frameworks with sulfate, divalent transition metals (Cr II , Fe II , Co II , Ni II ) and U V . Here, the small-angle X-ray scattering of these phases dissolved in butylamine reveals differing supramolecular assembly of U 70 clusters, controlled primarily by sulfates. However, observed trends in transition metal linking guide future design of U 70 -materials with different topologies. Finally, U 70 linking via U IV -O-U V -O-U IV bridges presents a rare example of mixed oxidation state uranium oxides without disorder.

Divanadium substituted keggin [PV 2 W 10 O 40 ] on non-reducible supports-Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 : synthesis, characterization, and catalytic properties for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane

Molecular metal oxide cluster, K 5 [α-1,2-PV 2 W 10 O 40 ] (PV 2 W 10 ), was found to have intrinsic catalytic activity for the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with high selectivity (> 80%) to propylene at low propane conversion (0.3%). Synthesis of dispersed PV 2 W 10 in non-reducible supports, γ-Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 , was done by incipient wetness impregnation. The supported catalysts were characterized by IR, Raman spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption, x-ray powder diffraction (PXRD), elemental analysis, hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H 2 –TPR), and ammonia temperature-programmed desorption (NH 3 –TPD). Catalytic testing of the supported PV 2 W 10 at equimolar cluster concentration revealed that when supported in γ-Al 2 O 3 it is more active (sevenfold increase in propane conversion) but in SiO 2 it is more selective to propylene (94%). The observed performance was due to both an increase in reducibility and higher concentration of strong acid sites for PV 2 W 10 supported in γ-Al 2 O 3 versus SiO 2 . Lastly, PV 2 W10 was shown to remain intact under reaction conditions indicating its thermal and oxidative stability.

Tafel Slope Analyses for Homogeneous Catalytic Reactions

Tafel analysis of electrocatalysts is essential in their characterization. This paper analyzes the application of Tafel-like analysis to the four-electron nonelectrochemical oxidation of water by the stoichiometric homogeneous 1-electron oxidant [Ru(bpy)3]3+ to dioxygen catalyzed by homogeneous catalysts, [Ru4O4(OH)2(H2O)4(γ-SiW10O36)2]10− (Ru4POM) and [Co4(H2O)2(PW9O34)2]10– (Co4POM). These complexes have slow electron exchange rates with electrodes due to the Frumkin effect, which precludes the use of known electrochemical methods to obtain Tafel plots at ionic strengths lower than 0.5 M. The application of an electron transfer catalyst, [Ru(bpy)3]3+/2+, increases the rates between the Ru4POM and electrode, but a traditional Tafel analysis of such a complex system is precluded due to a lack of appropriate theoretical models for 4-electron processes. Here, we develop a theoretical framework and experimental procedures for a Tafel-like analysis of Ru4POM and Co4POM, using a stoichiometric molecular oxidant [Ru(bpy)3]3+. The dependence of turnover frequency (TOF) as a function of electrochemical solution potential created by the [Ru(bpy)3]3+/[Ru(bpy)3]2+ redox couple (an analog of the Tafel plot) was obtained from kinetics data and interpreted based on the suggested reaction mechanism.
