Multi-port, optically addressed RAM

A random access memory addressing system utilizing optical links between memory and the read/write logic circuits comprises addressing circuits including a plurality of light signal sources, a plurality of optical gates including optical detectors associated with the memory cells, and a holographic optical element adapted to reflect and direct the light signals to the desired memory cell locations. More particularly, it is a multi-port, binary computer memory for interfacing with a plurality of computers. There are a plurality of storage cells for containing bits of binary information, the storage cells being disposed at the intersections of a plurality of row conductors and a plurality of column conductors. There is interfacing logic for receiving information from the computers directing access to ones of the storage cells. There are first light sources associated with the interfacing logic for transmitting a first light beam with the access information modulated thereon. First light detectors are associated with the storage cells for receiving the first light beam, for generating an electrical signal containing the access information, and for conducting the electrical signal to the one of the storage cells to which it is directed. There are holographic optical elements for reflecting the first light beam from the first light sources to the first light detectors.

Port-O-Sim Object Simulation Application

Port-O-Sim is a software application that supports engineering modeling and simulation of launch-range systems and subsystems, as well as the vehicles that operate on them. It is flexible, distributed, object-oriented, and realtime. A scripting language is used to configure an array of simulation objects and link them together. The script is contained in a text file, but executed and controlled using a graphical user interface. A set of modules is defined, each with input variables, output variables, and settings. These engineering models can be either linked to each other or run as standalone. The settings can be modified during execution. Since 2001, this application has been used for pre-mission failure mode training for many Range Safety Scenarios. It contains range asset link analysis, develops look-angle data, supports sky-screen site selection, drives GPS (Global Positioning System) and IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) simulators, and can support conceptual design efforts for multiple flight programs with its capacity for rapid six-degrees-of-freedom model development. Due to the assembly of various object types into one application, the application is applicable across a wide variety of launch range problem domains.

Porting and Testing NPOESS CrIMSS EDR Algorithms

As a part of the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) and the NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP), the instruments Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) and Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) make up the Cross-track Infrared and Microwave Sounder Suite (CrIMSS). CrIMSS will primarily provide global temperature, moisture, and pressure profiles and calibrated radiances [1]. In preparation for the NPOESS/NPP launch, porting and testing of the CrIMSS Environmental Data Record (EDR) algorithms need to be performed.

Porting a Hall MHD Code to a Graphic Processing Unit

We present our experience porting a Hall MHD code to a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). The code is a 2nd order accurate MUSCL-Hancock scheme which makes use of an HLL Riemann solver to compute numerical fluxes and second-order finite differences to compute the Hall contribution to the electric field. The divergence of the magnetic field is controlled with Dedner?s hyperbolic divergence cleaning method. Preliminary benchmark tests indicate a speedup (relative to a single Nehalem core) of 58x for a double precision calculation. We discuss scaling issues which arise when distributing work across multiple GPUs in a CPU-GPU cluster.

Retro Rocket Motor Self-Penetrating Scheme for Heat Shield Exhaust Ports

A preliminary scheme was developed for base-mounted solid-propellant retro rocket motors to self-penetrate the Orion Crew Module heat shield for configurations with the heat shield retained during landings on Earth. In this system the motors propel impactors into structural push plates, which in turn push through the heat shield ablator material. The push plates are sized such that the remaining port in the ablator material is large enough to provide adequate flow area for the motor exhaust plume. The push plate thickness is sized to assure structural integrity behind the ablative thermal protection material. The concept feasibility was demonstrated and the performance was characterized using a gas gun to launch representative impactors into heat shield targets with push plates. The tests were conducted using targets equipped with Fiberform(R) and PICA as the heat shield ablator material layer. The PICA penetration event times were estimated to be under 30 ms from the start of motor ignition. The mass of the system (not including motors) was estimated to be less than 2.3 kg (5 lbs) per motor. The configuration and demonstrations are discussed.

A Modified Triples Algorithm for Flush Air Data Systems that Allows a Variety of Pressure Port Configurations

Air Data Systems (FADS) are becoming more prevalent on re-entry vehicles, as evi- denced by the Mars Science Laboratory and the Orion Multipurpose Crew Vehicle. A FADS consists of flush-mounted pressure transducers located at various locations on the fore-body of a flight vehicle or the heat shield of a re-entry capsule. A pressure model converts the pressure readings into useful air data quantities. Two algorithms for converting pressure readings to air data have become predominant- the iterative Least Squares State Estimator (LSSE) and the Triples Algorithm. What follows herein is a new algorithm that takes advantage of the best features of both the Triples Algorithm and the LSSE. This approach employs the potential flow model and strategic differencing of the Triples Algorithm to obtain the defective flight angles; however, the requirements on port placement are far less restrictive, allowing for configurations that are considered optimal for a FADS.

The International Space Station (ISS) Port 1 (P1) External Active Thermal Control System (EATCS) Ammonia Leak

Ammonia is used in the Starboard 1 (S1) and Port 1 (P1) External Active Thermal Control System (EATCS) to cool the pressurized modules, and some of the external electrical power distribution hardware. Leaks that develop in these critical cooling systems that deplete in-line tanks can ultimately result in loss of cooling, which can have devastating impacts to the mission, science and crew onboard the ISS. A slow ammonia leak was initially observed from the P1 EATCS in 2011, but later in 2013 the leak rate began to accelerate. The ammonia inventory eventually began to decay exponentially, raising concerns that the inventory could drop to levels where the system would not be operational. The Robotic External Leak Locator (RELL) was built and launched to the ISS to detect and help locate ammonia leaks using the ISS Robotic Arm and remote ground operator control without constant crew involvement. RELL pinpointed the ammonia leak to the two flexible jumper hose assemblies connecting one of two fluid loops in one of the three deployable radiators to the P1 EATCS. The ammonia inside the two hose assemblies and that radiator fluid loop was isolated and vented to space in 2017. This stopped the leak and an Extravehicular Activity was conducted to remove the two hose assemblies so they could be returned to ground for further Test, Teardown and Evaluation (TT&E). The purpose of this presentation is to discuss this leakage scenario and the TT&E efforts.

The NEID Port Adapter at WIYN: On-Sky Fast Guiding Performance

NEID (NN-explore Exoplanet Investigations with Doppler spectroscopy) is an optical, fiber-fed spectrometer installed on the WIYN 3.5m Telescope. The radial velocity precision that NEID is expected to reach requires the stellar jitter (i.e., the slight irregular movement of the stellar image induced by atmospheric turbulence, wind-shake, etc.) to be controlled within 0.05 arc-seconds 90% of the time in nominal observing conditions (i.e., 0.8-arcsecond seeing and mild winds). To achieve that, the NEID Port Adapter incorporates a fast, first-order wavefront correction system, which implements an Electron-Multiplying CCD camera and a tip/tilt piezo stage to capture and stabilize the stellar image. Here, we use on-sky data to demonstrate the performance of this system under various observing conditions.
