Optimization technique for improved microwave transmission from multi-solar power satellites

An optimization technique for generating antenna illumination tapers allows improved microwave transmission efficiencies from proposed solar power satellite (SPS) systems and minimizes sidelobe levels to meet preset environmental standards. The cumulative microwave power density levels from 50 optimized SPS systems are calculated at the centroids of each of the 3073 counties in the continental United States. These cumulative levels are compared with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) measured levels of electromagnetic radiation in seven eastern cities. Effects of rectenna relocations upon the power levels/population exposure rates are also studied.

Automated distribution system management for multichannel space power systems

A NASA sponsored study of space power distribution system technology is in progress to develop an autonomously managed power system (AMPS) for large space power platforms. The multichannel, multikilowatt, utility-type power subsystem proposed presents new survivability requirements and increased subsystem complexity. The computer controls under development for the power management system must optimize the power subsystem performance and minimize the life cycle cost of the platform. A distribution system management philosophy has been formulated which incorporates these constraints. Its implementation using a TI9900 microprocessor and FORTH as the programming language is presented. The approach offers a novel solution to the perplexing problem of determining the optimal combination of loads which should be connected to each power channel for a versatile electrical distribution concept.

Evolutionary computing for the design search and optimization of space vehicle power subsystems

Evolutionary computing has proven to be a straightforward and robust approach for optimizing a wide range of difficult analysis and design problems. This paper discusses the application of these techniques to an existing space vehicle power subsystem resource and performance analysis simulation in a parallel processing environment. Out preliminary results demonstrate that this approach has the potential to improve the space system trade study process by allowing engineers to statistically weight subsystem goals of mass, cost and performance then automatically size power elements based on anticipated performance of the subsystem rather than on worst-case estimates.

Optimum dimensions of power solenoids for magnetic suspension

Design optimization of power solenoids for controllable and stabilizable magnetic suspensions with force compensation in a wind tunnel is shown. It is assumed that the model of a levitating body is a sphere of ferromagnetic material with constant magnetic permeability. This sphere, with a radius much smaller than its distance from the solenoid above, is to be maintained in position on the solenoid axis by balance of the vertical electromagnetic force and the force of gravitation. The necessary vertical (axial) force generated by the solenoid is expressed as a function of relevant system dimensions, solenoid design parameters, and physical properties of the body. Three families of curves are obtained which depict the solenoid power for a given force as a function of the solenoid length with either outside radius or inside radius as a variable parameter and as a function of the outside radius with inside radius as a variable parameter. The curves indicate the optimum solenoid length and outside radius, for minimum power, corresponding to a given outside radius and inside radius, respectively.

Estimates of Optimal Operating Conditions for Hydrogen-Oxygen Cesium-Seeded Magnetohydrodynamic Power Generator

The value of percent seed, oxygen to fuel ratio, combustion pressure, Mach number, and magnetic field strength which maximize either the electrical conductivity or power density at the entrance of an MHD power generator was obtained. The working fluid is the combustion product of H2 and O2 seeded with CsOH. The ideal theoretical segmented Faraday generator along with an empirical form found from correlating the data of many experimenters working with generators of different sizes, electrode configurations, and working fluids, are investigated. The conductivity and power densities optimize at a seed fraction of 3.5 mole percent and an oxygen to hydrogen weight ratio of 7.5. The optimum values of combustion pressure and Mach number depend on the operating magnetic field strength.

Vertical Profiles for Turbojet-Powered Aircraft

OPTIM generates profile of altitude, airspeed, and flightpath angle as function of range between given set or origin and destination points for particular models of transport aircraft. Profile is optimized in sense of minimizing fuel or time or in minimizing direct operating cost expressed as combination of fuel and time.

Metal powder production by gas atomization

The confined liquid, gas-atomization process was investigated. Results from a two-dimensional water model showed the importance of atomization pressure, as well as delivery tube and atomizer design. The atomization process at the tip of the delivery tube was photographed. Results from the atomization of a modified 7075 aluminum alloy yielded up to 60 wt pct. powders that were finer than 45 microns in diameter. Two different atomizer designs were evaluated. The amount of fine powders produced was correlated to a calculated gas-power term. An optimal gas-power value existed for maximized fine powder production. Atomization at gas-power greater than or less than this optimal value produced coarser powders.

Optimal design of a space power system

The aerospace industry, like many other industries, regularly applies optimization techniques to develop designs which reduce cost, maximize performance, and minimize weight. The desire to minimize weight is of particular importance in space-related products since the costs of launch are directly related to payload weight, and launch vehicle capabilities often limit the allowable weight of a component or system. With these concerns in mind, this paper presents the optimization of a space-based power generation system for minimum mass. The goal of this work is to demonstrate the use of optimization techniques on a realistic and practical engineering system. The power system described uses thermoelectric devices to convert heat into electricity. The heat source for the system is a nuclear reactor. Waste heat is rejected from the system to space by a radiator.

Real-time edge-enhanced optical correlator

Edge enhancement of an input image by four-wave mixing a first write beam with a second write beam in a photorefractive crystal, GaAs, was achieved for VanderLugt optical correlation with an edge enhanced reference image by optimizing the power ratio of a second write beam to the first write beam (70:1) and optimizing the power ratio of a read beam, which carries the reference image to the first write beam (100:701). Liquid crystal TV panels are employed as spatial light modulators to change the input and reference images in real time.

Operations research investigations of satellite power stations

A systems model reflecting the design concepts of Satellite Power Stations (SPS) was developed. The model is of sufficient scope to include the interrelationships of the following major design parameters: the transportation to and between orbits; assembly of the SPS; and maintenance of the SPS. The systems model is composed of a set of equations that are nonlinear with respect to the system parameters and decision variables. The model determines a figure of merit from which alternative concepts concerning transportation, assembly, and maintenance of satellite power stations are studied. A hybrid optimization model was developed to optimize the system's decision variables. The optimization model consists of a random search procedure and the optimal-steepest descent method. A FORTRAN computer program was developed to enable the user to optimize nonlinear functions using the model. Specifically, the computer program was used to optimize Satellite Power Station system components.

Supervisory On-line Optimal Control of an Electric Power Microgrid Design for Lunar Habitation

The following article describes an optimal control algorithm for the operation and study of an electric microgrid designed to power a lunar habitat. A photovoltaic (PV) generator powers the habitat and the presence of predictable lunar eclipses necessitates a system to prioritize and control loads within the microgrid. The algorithm consists of a reduced order model (ROM) that describes the microgrid, a discretization of the equations that result from the ROM, and an optimization formulation that controls the microgrid’s behavior. In order to validate this approach, the paper presents results from simulation based on lunar eclipse information and a schedule of intended loads.
