Presentation on the INL Remote-Handled Low-Level Waste Disposal Facility FY-2024 Annual Summary Report

The abstract below is from the report INL/RPT-24-82600. The powerpoint presentation contains information taken from the report. This Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 annual summary report (ASR) documents the continued adequacy of the performance assessment (PA), the composite analysis (CA), and associated operating disposal authorization statement (ODAS) technical basis documents for the Remote Handled Low Level Waste (RHLLW) Disposal Facility at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Annual review of the adequacy of the PA and CA for RHLLW Disposal Facility ensures that conclusions of the analyses remain valid in accordance with requirements of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Order 435.1, “Radioactive Waste Management.” In FY 2024, no significant operational changes or other activities occurred that would cause deviation from the assumptions in the PA and CA pertaining to disposal geometry, verification of waste characteristics, tracking disposal inventories against total limits, facility closure design, or institutional controls. Nineteen waste canister shipments were received at the RHLLW Disposal Facility, and all nineteen waste canisters were emplaced in disposal vaults.

Security Analysis of a Class of Spread Spectrum Systems Presentation

A method of adding physical layer security to a class of spread spectrum systems has been recently proposed. In this paper, we look into the rate at which an eavesdropper may gain information about the system to decipher the data symbols. The Shannon mutual information is used to measure the rate of information that may be gained by an eavesdropper. The k-nearest neighbors (k-NN) method is used to obtain estimates of relevant entropy values, which will then be used to quantify the rate of information recovery as more data is transmitted. It turns out that such information recovery requires the adoption of special methods that avoid any destructive bias in the estimates. Details of these methods are also presented.

Exploiting Multi-Domain Features for Detection of Unclassified Electromagnetic Signals (Presentation)

Deep Learning based classification techniques have shown excellent performance in static environments, where the training and testing samples are drawn from the same distribution. However, real world scenarios often present samples that do not belong to the known set of classes chosen during training. This is quite common for electromagnetic signals, where it is impractical to assume that all possible waveforms are known a-priori, specially in scenarios like warfare. To address this problem, we propose a deep learning based adversarial model where the generator learns to generate waveform features that can deceive the discriminator model as true samples. We introduce domain knowledge of wireless signals by decomposing the signal into a lower dimensional unique feature set, which is used for classifying known versus unknown signals. We further introduce multiple domain representations of the signal to extract features and combine them together to accurately classify new waveforms as an unknown class. Our results show that combined features from multiple domains outperform any single domain representation, especially at low SNR regimes with fewer number of samples to classify.
