Proof of Concept of Natural and Synthetic Antifouling Agents in Coatings

Marine biofouling, caused by the deposition and accumulation of marine organisms on submerged surfaces, represents a huge concern for the maritime industries and also contributes to environmental pollution and health concerns. The most effective way to prevent this phenomenon is the use of biocide-based coatings which have proven to cause serious damage to marine ecosystems. Several research groups have focused on the search for new environmentally friendly antifoulants, including marine and terrestrial natural products and synthetic analogues. Some of these compounds have been incorporated into marine coatings and display interesting antifouling activities caused by the interference with the biofilm-forming species as well as by the inhibition of the settlement of macroorganisms. This review highlights the proof-of-concept studies of emerging natural or synthetic antifouling compounds in coatings, from lab-made to commercial ones, performed between 2019 and 2023 and their results in the field or in in vivo laboratorial tests.

Coded photographic proof paper could serve as convenient densitometer

Standard print-out proofing paper, preprinted with an identifying code, serves as convenient densitometer. Exposure to light darkens the paper and gives a measure of the density of the resultant photographic image or the total amount of exposure sustained by the paper.

Electric power generation using geothermal brine resources for a proof of concept facility

An exploratory systems study of a geothermal proof-of-concept facility is being conducted. This study is the initial phase (Phase 0) of a project to establish the technical and economic feasibility of using hot brine resources for electric power production and other industrial applications. Phase 0 includes the conceptual design of an experimental test-bed facility and a 10-MWe power generating facility.

Electrification of the proof mass of a drag-free or accelerometric satellite

The exploitation of the data provided by the Cactus accelerometer, which makes up the payload of the D5B Castor Satellite of CNES confirmed the existence of an electric current charging the proof mass under the influence of the magnetospheric protons, and revealed a periodic variation of this current, due to the passage of the apogee through the South Atlantic magnetic anomaly. Results of in-orbit measurements of this charging current are presented, as well as calculations made for determining this current and its variations from data on proton flux at the satellite altitudes. The comparison of measured and calculated values shows that the calculation method is valid and precise enough to be used for drag-free or accelerometric satellites.

Proof test criteria for thin walled pressure vessels

A proof test criterion for assuring minimum service life requirements for aerospace pressure vessels is provided. The criteria proposed are based on the results of several experimental programs conducted on surface flaw specimens fabricated from 2219 aluminum base and weld metal. A description is presented of the stable crack growth behavior of surface flaws during loading. Conclusions derived from an experimental program are discussed. It is found that significant stable crack growth under increasing load can occur prior to failure. However, significant variability in results can be anticipated even when carefully controlled laboratory procedures are employed.

Dynamic profile of a prototype pivoted proof-mass actuator

A prototype of a linear inertial reaction actuation (damper) device employing a flexure-pivoted reaction (proof) mass is discussed. The mass is driven by an electromechanic motor using a dc electromagnetic field and an ac electromagnetic drive. During the damping process, the actuator dissipates structural kinetic energy as heat through electromagnetic damping. A model of the inertial, stiffness and damping properties is presented along with the characteristic differential equations describing the coupled response of the actuator and structure. The equations, employing the dynamic coefficients, are oriented in the form of a feedback control network in which distributed sensors are used to dictate actuator response leading to a specified amount of structural excitation or damping.

Peer Review of a Formal Verification/Design Proof Methodology

The role of formal verification techniques in system validation was examined. The value and the state of the art of performance proving for fault-tolerant compuers were assessed. The investigation, development, and evaluation of performance proving tools were reviewed. The technical issues related to proof methodologies are examined. The technical issues discussed are summarized.

Bit error rate testing of a proof-of-concept model baseband processor

Bit-error-rate tests were performed on a proof-of-concept baseband processor. The BBP, which operates at an intermediate frequency in the C-Band, demodulates, demultiplexes, routes, remultiplexes, and remodulates digital message segments received from one ground station for retransmission to another. Test methods are discussed and test results are compared with the Contractor's test results.
