Burst delay line for generating ultrashort pulse bursts with interval tunability from femtoseconds to nanoseconds.

Ultrashort burst laser pulses are important for applications in laser processing and spectroscopy. However, existing burst generators face limitations in pulse time interval tunability and coaxiality. Here, we present a burst pulse generator that delivers coaxial ultrashort pulses with tunable pulse time intervals using a single translation stage. The constructed system produced eight femtosecond pulses with uniform intervals tunable from 100 fs to 1.93 ns, equivalent to burst-internal repetition rates spanning 10 THz to 0.52 GHz. We further demonstrated interval-dependent plasma emission in air filamentation, providing a compact platform to study burst-laser-induced phenomena.

Apparatus for in-situ nondestructive measurement of Young's modulus of plate structures

A method and apparatus for determining stiffness of a plate-like structure including a monolithic or composite laminate plate entails disposing a device for generating an acoustical pulse against a surface of the plate and disposing a detecting device against the same surface spaced a known distance from the pulse-generating device, and using the pulse-generating device to emit a pulse so as to create an extensional wave in the plate. The detecting device is used to determine a time of flight of the wave over the known distance, and the wave velocity is calculated. A Young's modulus of the plate is determined by a processor based on the wave velocity. Methods and apparatus for evaluating both isotropic plates and anisotropic laminates are disclosed.

New methods of generation of ultrashort laser pulses for ranging

To reach the millimeter satellite laser ranging accuracy, the goal for nineties, new laser ranging techniques have to be applied. To increase the laser ranging precision, the application of the ultrashort laser pulses in connection with the new signal detection and processing techniques, is inevitable. The two wavelength laser ranging is one of the ways to measure the atmospheric dispersion to improve the existing atmospheric correction models and hence, to increase the overall system ranging accuracy to the desired value. We are presenting a review of several nonstandard techniques of ultrashort laser pulses generation, which may be utilized for laser ranging: compression of the nanosecond pulses using stimulated Brillouin and Raman backscattering; compression of the mode-locked pulses using Raman backscattering; passive mode-locking technique with nonlinear mirror; and passive mode-locking technique with the negative feedback.

Ultrasonic bone densitometer

A device, for measuring the density of a bone structure so as to monitor the calcium content, is described. A pair of opposed spaced ultrasonic transducers are held within a clamping apparatus closely adjacent the bone being analyzed. These ultrasonic transducers incude piezoelectric crystals shaped to direct signals through the bone encompassed in the heel and finger of the subject being tested. A pulse generator is coupled to one of the transducers and generates an electric pulse for causing the transducers to generate an ultrasonic sound wave which is directed through the bone structure to the other transducer. An electric circuit, including an amplifier and a bandpass filter couples the signals from the receiver transducer back to the pulse generator for retriggering the pulse generator at a frequency proportional to the duration that the ultrasonic wave takes to travel through the bone structure being examined.

High-Voltage Pulsed Power Generator for Beam Injection Systems

Beam injection systems in hadron colliders require kickers generating ±50 kV peak voltages into a 50 Ω impedance, with peak currents of 1000 A and sub-10 ns rise and fall times. This paper presents a novel high-voltage pulse power generator utilizing a distributed pulser architecture. It combines gallium nitride (GaN) transistors in a Marx topology with an inductive adder, achieving nanosecond-scale switching speeds and high-power efficiency. Compared to other solutions such as based on MOSFETs or fast ionization dynistors, our development offers superior peak and average power performance, reduced system complexity, and enhanced reliability, marking a significant step forward in high-voltage pulse generation for accelerator applications.

Versatile system for ion energy measurements generated by pulsed laser ionization: Insights into electron-ion dynamics

Ion energy distributions generated by pulsed laser interactions with materials are essential for applications ranging from materials science to oncology. Ion energy characterization is particularly important for an emerging mass spectrometry technique called virtual-slit cycloidal mass spectrometry (VS-CMS). The ion energy distribution influences the design and performance of VS-CMS instruments, as well as the efficacy of laser-driven ionization methods in various fields. Several established techniques, including the retarding potential method, time-of-flight (TOF) analysis, and electrostatic energy analyzers, have been employed to measure ion energy distributions. The wide range of ion energies reported highlights the strong dependence of ion energy on laser parameters, target materials, and experimental conditions, as well as the necessity of making independent measurements of the ion energy distribution for specific laser systems and materials. This paper presents the design and characterization of a simple TOF-based apparatus for measuring ion energy distributions from pulsed laser ionization without external fields. This approach minimizes perturbation of electron-ion dynamics and enables simultaneous energy measurements at multiple spatial positions. Here, the apparatus was tested using a nanosecond pulsed Nd:YAG laser operating at 1064 nm, 532 nm, and 266 nm on solid copper sheets at various laser fluences. Simultaneous measurements at different distances provide new insights into ion-electron interactions post-ionization and demonstrate the influence of laser wavelength and fluence on ion energy distributions.

Synchronization tracking in pulse position modulation receiver

A clock pulse generator for decoding pulse position modulation in an optical communication receiver is synchronized by a delay tracking loop which multiplies impulses of a data pulse by the square wave clock pulses from the generator to produce positive impulses when the clock pulse is of one level, and negative impulses when the clock pulse is of another level. A delay tracking loop integrates the impulses and produces an error signal that adjusts the delay so the clock pulses will be synchronized with data pulses. A dead-time tau sub d is provided between data pulses of an interval tau sub p in the data pulse period tau. When synchronized, the average number of positive impulses integrated will equal the average number of negative impulses over the continuous stream of data pulses.

Methods and apparatus for making magnetic skyrmions

A system and a method for the deterministic generation of magnetic skyrmions includes a magnetic strip configured to store and transport skyrmions. The magnetic strip includes one or more spatial inhomogeneities configured to generate a skyrmion at known locations when excited by a current pulse. A current pulse generator is used to inject current pulses into the magnetic strip via contact pads electrically coupled to both the current pulse generator and the magnetic strip. The system also includes a magnetic field source to apply an out-of-plane magnetic field across the magnetic strip to facilitate generation of skyrmions. Skyrmions can be generated by applying an out-of-plane magnetic field to the magnetic strip and injecting a current pulse with sufficient current density towards the spatial inhomogeneities. Once a skyrmion is generated, another current pulse with sufficient current density can be injected to move the skyrmion.

Theoretical investigation of plasma wave generation by pulsed electron beams in space

Here, we report theoretical calculations of plasma wave generation in the whistler modes and in the extraordinary modes, by pulsed electron beams in a magnetized plasma. The numerical simulations of the wave generation take into account the longitudinal expansion of the electron beam due to the space charge force and the energy spread. The work presented in this article provides predictions for the wave generation performance of the beam plasma interactions experiment (Beam PIE), where pulsed electron beams were produced by a spaceborne radio frequency (RF) linear accelerator. We also theoretically explore the desirable properties of the pulsed electron beam for future space experiments, which will be the next step toward eventually demonstrating the radiation-belt remediation (RBR).

Pulsed metallic-plasma generators.

A pulsed metallic-plasma generator is described which utilizes a vacuum arc as the plasma source. The arc is initiated on the surface of a consumable cathode which can be any electrically conductive material. Ignition is accomplished by using a current pulse to vaporize a portion of a conductive film on the surface of an insulator separating the cathode from the ignition electrode. The film is regenerated during the ensuing arc. Over 100 million ignition cycles have been accomplished by using four 0.125-in. diameter zinc cathodes operating in parallel and high-density aluminum-oxide insulators. Among the applications being investigated for the generator are metal deposition, vacuum pumping, electric propulsion, and high-power dc arc interruption.

Control over pulsed operation modes of an erbium-doped fibre laser passively mode-locked via nonlinear polarisation rotation

We have experimentally demonstrated the possibility of controlling pulse generation modes of an erbium-doped fibre ring laser operating in the anomalous dispersion regime and passively mode-locked via nonlinear polarisation rotation. It has been shown that individual adjustment of the pump power and intracavity polarisation controllers leads to changes in pulse generation mode, without changing the cavity. We have evaluated the key spectral, temporal and energetic characteristics of the observed pulse generation modes. (control of laser radiation parameters. active media)

Investigating radiatively driven, magnetized plasmas with a university scale pulsed-power generator

We present first results from a novel experimental platform that is able to access physics relevant to topics including indirect-drive magnetized inertial confinement fusion, laser energy deposition, various topics in atomic physics, and laboratory astrophysics (for example, the penetration of B-fields into high energy density plasmas). This platform uses the x rays from a wire array Z-pinch to irradiate a silicon target, producing an outflow of ablated plasma. The ablated plasma expands into ambient, dynamically significant B-fields (∼5 T), which are supported by the current flowing through the Z-pinch. The outflows have a well-defined (quasi-1D) morphology, enabling the study of fundamental processes typically only available in more complex, integrated schemes. Experiments were fielded on the MAGPIE pulsed-power generator (1.4 MA, 240 ns rise time). On this machine, a wire array Z-pinch produces an x-ray pulse carrying a total energy of ∼15 kJ over ∼30 ns. This equates to an average brightness temperature of around 10 eV on-target.

Ultrastable automatic frequency control

Center frequency of wideband AFC circuit drifts only hundredths of percent per day. Since circuit responds only to slow frequency drifts and modulation signal has high-pass characteristics, AFC does not interfere with normal FM operation. Stable oscillator, reset circuit, and pulse generator constitute time-averaging discriminator; digital counter in pulse generator replaces usual monostable multivibrator.
