Gravitating spinning strings in AdS 3

In the AdS/CFT correspondence, single trace operators of large-N gauge theories at large spin J can be described by classical spinning strings, giving a geometric and classical description of their spectrum at strong coupling. We observe that in AdS 3 these strings have significant gravitational back-reaction at sufficiently large spin, since the gravitational force does not decay at long distances. We construct solutions for folded spinning strings coupled to gravity in AdS 3 and compute their spectrum, corresponding to the leading Regge trajectory of Virasroro primary operators. These solutions exist only below a maximal spin J < J max , and as J → J max the solution approaches an extremal rotating BTZ black hole.

Geodesic synchrotron radiation in the Kerr geometry by the method of asymptotically factorized Green's functions

The scalar, electromagnetic, and gravitational geodesic-synchrotron-radiation (GSR) spectra are determined for the case of a test particle moving on a highly relativistic circular orbit about a rotating (Kerr) black hole. It is found that the spectral shape depends only weakly on the value of the angular-momentum parameter (a/M) of the black hole, but the total radiated power drops unexpectedly for a value of at least 0.95 and vanishes as the value approaches unity. A spin-dependent factor (involving the inner product of the polarization of a radiated quantum with the source) is isolated to explain the dependence of the spectral shape on the spin of the radiated field. Although the scalar wave equation is solved by separation of variables, this procedure is avoided for the vector and tensor cases by postulating a sum-over-states expansion for the Green's function similar to that found to hold in the scalar case. The terms in this sum, significant for GSR, can then be evaluated in the geometric-optics approximation without requiring the use of vector or tensor spherical harmonics.

Emission line region kinematics in selected Seyfert galaxies

The kinematic state of the emission line regions of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is a fundamental problem which addresses the very nature of these objects. The currently popular model of the energy source of the latter is accretion onto the supermassive black hole which is believed to reside in the nuclear regions of galaxies. If this picture is correct then the emission line gas may be expected to be infalling, and may eventually provide the fuel to power them. It is very difficult to determine the kinematic state of the emission line gas because of the technical problems associated with their small apparent sizes, as seen from the earth. One can only observe the net emission from a large ensemble of clouds, so the emission lines are by necessity composite. Several very long exposures of NGC 1068, one of the very nearest Seyfert galaxies, were obtained. Because of its proximity, it is expected to have the best resolved emission line regions as seen from earth. The La emission line of neutral hydrogen will radiate preferentially in the direction of the central object because of the effects of emission line gas opacity on the transfer of radiation out of the clouds. By obtaining high dispersion observations of Doppler broadening of the line through the small entrance aperture of the IUE one can determine whether this material is in a state of outflow (expected if explosions power the central engine), inflow (expected for accretion onto a massive black hole), or rotation (expected for gas with significant angular momentum near the central regions of a galaxy).

Relativistically Skewed Iron Emission and Disk Reflection in Galactic Microquasar XTE J1748-288

We report evidence for an Fe K-alpha fluorescence line feature in the Very High, High, and Low state X-ray spectra of the galactic microquasar XTE JI748-288 during its June 1998 outburst. Spectral analyses were made on observations spread across the outburst, gathered with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. Gaussian line. disk emission line, relativistic disk emission line, and disk reflection models are fit to the data. In the Very High State, the line profile is strongly redshifted and consistent with emission from the innermost radius of a maximally rotating Kerr black hole, 1.235 R(sub g). The line profile is less redshifted in the High State, but increasingly prominent. In the Low State, the line profile is very strong and centered af approx. 6.7 keV; disk line emission models constrain the inner edge of the disk to fluctuate between approx.20 and approx.59 R(sub g). We trace the disk reflection fraction across the full outburst of this source, and find well-constrained fractions below those observed in AGN in the Very High and High States, but consistent with other galactic sources in the Low State. We discuss the possible implications for black hole X-ray binary system dynamics and accretion flow geometry.

Relativistic Iron Emission and Disk Reflection in Galactic Microquasar XTE J1748-288

We report evidence for an Fe K-alpha fluorescence line feature and disk reflection in the very high, high-, and low-state X-ray spectra of the Galactic microquasar XTE J1748 - 288 during its 1998 June outburst. Spectral analyses are made on data gathered throughout the outburst by the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array. Gaussian line, relativistic disk emission line, and ionized disk reflection models are fitted to the data. In the very high state the line profile appears strongly redshifted, consistent with disk emission from the innermost stable orbits around a maximally rotating Kerr black hole. In the high state the line profile is less redshifted and increasingly prominent. The low-state line profile is very strong (approx. 0.5 keV equivalent width) and centered at 6.7 +/- 0.10 keV; disk line emission model fits indicate that the inner edge of the disk fluctuates between approx. 20R(sub g) and - approx. 100R(sub g) in this state. The disk reflection fraction is traced through the outburst; reflection from an ionized disk is preferred in the very high and high states, and reflection from a relatively neutral disk is preferred in the low state. We discuss the implications of our findings for the binary system dynamics and accretion flow geometry in XTE J1748 - 288.

Asymptotic non-flatness of an effective black hole model based on loop quantum gravity

For any non-rotating effective quantum (uncharged) black hole model to be viable, its asymptotic structure of spacetime should reduce to that of a Schwarzschild black hole. After examining the asymptotic structure of quantum black holes proposed in Ashtekar et al., (2018), in this study we find that the solution is actually not asymptotically flat. Departure from asymptotically flat spacetime is a direct consequence of the quantum parameters included in the model. Moreover, since the property of asymptotic flatness needs to be explicitly invoked, for instance, in relating the black hole and the white hole masses, it thereby raises a serious concern about the consistency of this model in view of the classical limit.

Constraints for transonic black hole accretion

Regularity conditions and global topological constraints leave some forbidden regions in the parameter space of the transonic isothermal, rotating matter onto black holes. Unstable flows occupy regions touching the boundaries of the forbidden regions. The astrophysical consequences of these results are discussed.

Neutron stars and black holes

The radiation of neutron stars is powered by accretion, rotation, or internal heat; accreting black holes are thought to be the central engines of AGNs and of a handful of binary X-ray sources in the Galaxy. The evolution of a neutron star depends on the coupling between the rotating neutron and proton fluids in the interior, and between these fluids and the crust; it also depends on the magnetic and thermal properties of the star. Significant progress has been made in recent years in the understanding of radial and disk accretion by black holes. Radiation from pair plasmas may make an important contribution to the X- and gamma-ray spectra of AGNs and black holes in binary systems.

Thermodynamics of the near-extremal Kerr spacetime

We examine the thermodynamics of a near-extremal Kerr black hole, and demonstrate that the geometry behaves as an ordinary quantum system with a vanishingly small degeneracy at low temperatures. This is in contrast with the classical analysis, which instead predicts a macroscopic entropy for the extremal Kerr black hole. Our results follow from a careful analysis of the gravitational path integral. Specifically, the low temperature canonical partition function behaves as Z ~ T$\frac{3}{2}$ e S 0 +c log S 0 , with S 0 the classical degeneracy and c a numerical coefficient we compute. This is in line with the general expectations for non-supersymmetric near-extremal black hole thermodynamics, as has been clarified in the recent past, although cases without spherical symmetry have not yet been fully analyzed until now. We also point out some curious features relating to the rotational zero modes of the near-extremal Kerr black hole background that affects the coefficient c. This raises a puzzle when considering similar black holes in string theory. Our results generalize to other rotating black holes, as we briefly exemplify.

Generating rotating spacetime in Ricci-based gravity: naked singularity as a black hole mimicker

Motivated by the lack of rotating solutions sourced by matter in General Relativity as well as in modified gravity theories, in this work we extend a recently discovered exact rotating solution of the minimal Einstein-scalar theory to its counterpart in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity coupled to a Born-Infeld scalar field. This is accomplished with the implementation of a well-developed mapping between solutions of Ricci-Based Palatini theories of gravity and General Relativity. The new solution is parametrized by the scalar charge and the Born-Infeld coupling constant apart from the mass and spin of the compact object. Compared to the spacetime prior to the mapping, we find that the high-energy modifications at the Born-Infeld scale are able to suppress but not remove the curvature divergence of the original naked null singularity. Depending on the sign of the Born-Infeld coupling constant, these modifications may even give rise to an additional timelike singularity exterior to the null one. In spite of that, both of the naked singularities before and after the mapping are capable of casting shadows, and as a consequence of the mapping relation, their shadows turn out to be identical as seen by a distant observer on the equatorial plane. Even though the scalar field induces a peculiar oblateness to the appearance of the shadow with its left and right endpoints held fixed, the closedness condition for the shadow contour sets a small upper bound on the absolute value of the scalar charge, which leads to observational features of the shadow closely resembling those of a Kerr black hole.

Separability of the Dirac equation in the STU black hole spacetime: Pairwise-equal charge case study

We study the separability of the Dirac equation in the background of four dimensional charged rotating asymptotically flat black hole solution of supergravity and the low energy string theory known as STU black hole. In particular, we analyze in detail the separability conditions in the pairwise equal charge STU black hole space-time. While in the latter case the minimally coupled Dirac equation is not separable, the introduction of a specific torsion term ensures the separability. The source of the torsion is the Kalb-Ramond field, which is an integral part of string theory, but further aspects of its properties and coupling to fermionic fields remain to be studied. To derive the torsion, two different approaches are used in conformally related frames, showing that the torsion is not unique. The correspondingly modified Dirac equations in the Einstein and string frames are shown to be separable. Furthermore, the massless radial and angular wave equations are examined; they show close similarity with corresponding equations for the standard Kerr background. A generalization of the Teukolsky equation for the pairwise equal case is conjectured. We also briefly analyze a technically sophisticated radial equation in the massive case.

The Broad Iron K-alpha line of Cygnus X-1 as Seen by XMM-Newton in the EPIC-pn Modified Timing Mode

We present the analysis of the broadened, flourescent iron K(alpha) line in simultaneous XMM-Newton and RXTE data from the black hole Cygnus X-I. The XMM-Newton data were taken in a modified version of the Timing Mode of the EPIC-pn camera. In this mode the lower energy threshold of the instrument is increased to 2.8 keV to avoid telemetry drop outs due to the brightness of the source, while at the same time preserving the signal to noise ratio in the Fe K(alpha) band. We find that the best-fit spectrum consists of the sum of an exponentially cut-off power-law and relativistically smeared, ionized reflection. The shape of the broadened Fe K(alpha) feature is due to strong Compton broadening combined with relativistic broadening. Assuming a standard, thin accretion disk, the black hole is close to maximally rotating. Key words. X-rays: binaries - black hole physics - gravitation

Relativistic winds from pulsar and black hole magnetospheres

The present consideration of the extraction of the rotational energy stored in a Kerr black hole by a large-scale MHD wind as a possible source for AGN jet energy proceeds by viewing both the ingoing and outgoing winds as propagating toward asymptotic infinities and transporting the conserved mass, angular momentum, and energy fluxes established by the source region. It is judged that the field-line rotation rate or total voltage drop across the system must also be determined by the dissipative process that injects plasma onto the magnetospheric field lines.

Transient quasi-periodic oscillations at γ-rays in the TeV blazar PKS 1510-089

ABSTRACT We present periodicity search analyses on the γ-ray light curve of the TeV blazar PKS 1510-089 observed by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. We report the detection of two transient quasi-periodic oscillations: A 3.6-d QPO during the outburst in 2009 that lasted five cycles (MJD 54906–54923); and a periodicity of 92 d spanning over 650 d from 2018 to 2020 (MJD 58200–58850), which lasted for seven cycles. We employed the Lomb–Scargle periodogram, Weighted Wavelet Z-transform, redfit, and the Monte Carlo light-curve simulation techniques to find any periodicity and the corresponding significance. The 3.6-d QPO was detected at a moderate significance of ∼3.5σ, while the detection significance of the 92-d QPO was ∼7.0σ. We explore a few physical models for such transient QPOs including a binary black hole system, precession of the jet, a non-axisymmetric instability rotating around the central black hole near the innermost stable circular orbit, the presence of quasi-equidistant magnetic islands inside the jet, and a geometric model involving a plasma blob moving helically inside a curved jet.

An interpretation of the narrow positron annihilation feature from X-ray nova Muscae 1991

The physical mechanism responsible for the narrow redshifted positron annihilation gamma-ray line from the X-ray nova Muscae 1991 is studied. The orbital inclination angle of the system is estimated and its black hole mass is constrained under the assumptions that the annihilation line centroid redshift is purely gravitational and that the line width is due to the combined effect of temperature broadening and disk rotation. The large black hole mass lower limit of 8 solar and the high binary mass ratio it implies raise a serious challenge to theoretical models of the formation and evolution of massive binaries.

Aligned fields double copy to Kerr-NUT-(A)dS

We find Abelian gauge fields that double copy to a large class of black hole spacetimes with spherical horizon topology known as the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS family. Using a multi-Kerr-Schild prescription, we extend the previously-known double copy structure for arbitrarily rotating general dimension black holes, to include NUT charges and an arbitrary cosmological constant. In all cases, these single copy gauge fields are ‘aligned fields’, because their nonzero components align with the principal tensor which generates the Killing structure of the spacetime. In five dimensions, we additionally derive the same single-copy field strengths via the Weyl double copy procedure.

From microscopic black hole entropy toward Hawking radiationc

The AdS/CFT correspondence has recently provided a novel approach for counting the microstates of black holes impressively matching the macroscopic Bekenstein–Hawking entropy formula of rotating electrically charged asymptotically AdS black holes in four to seven dimensions. This approach is designed for supersymmetric extremal black holes, but can also be extended to nonsupersymmetric, near-extremal black holes. Besides the dual higher-dimensional boundary CFT, an effective 2D CFT emerges in a certain near-horizon limit accounting for both the extremal and the near-extremal black hole entropies. Furthermore, this effective 2D description is universal across dimensions and comes naturally equipped with an approach to quantitatively tackle aspects of Hawking radiation.
