Instrumentation for airbreathing propulsion; Proceedings of the Symposium, U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif., September 19-21, 1972

New developments and refinements in measuring techniques used for both ground testing and in-flight control, diagnosis, and monitoring of airbreathing combustors are analyzed in a number of papers. Some of the techniques studied include the application of laser velocimeters for flow measurements; on-the-shaft data systems for rotating engine components; total pressure averaging in pulsating flows; fiber optic and laser digital pressure transducers; holography of nozzles, jets, and spraying systems; application of the Raman effect fo flowfield diagnostics; holography of JP-4 droplets and combusting boron particles; the use of a laser-powered optical proximity probe in advanced turbofan engine development; pyrometry for measurement of surface temperature distribution on a rotating turbine blade; an ultrasonic turbine inlet gas temperature sensor; automatic detection and suppression of inlet buzz; and electrostatic probes for sensing incipient engine failure. Individual items are announced in this issue.

The Colorado School of Mines Nevada geothermal study

Geothermal systems in the Basin and Range Province of the western United States probably differ in many respects from geothermal systems already discovered in other parts of the world because of the unique tectonic setting. To investigate this, a study of the geothermal occurrences at Fly Ranch, approximately 100 miles north of Reno, Nevada, has been undertaken. Ample evidence for a geothermal system exists in this area, including the surface expression of heat flow in the form of hot springs, an extensive area of low electrical resistivity, and a high level of seismicity along faults bounding the thermal area. However, geophysical and geological studies have not yet provided evidence for a local heat source at depth. Additional detailed geophysical and geological studies, as well as drilling, must be completed before the geothermal system can be described fully.

Propulsion system structural integration and engine integrity; Proceedings of the Symposium, U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif., September 3-6, 1974

Current problems involving the structural integrity of propulsion systems, and proposed approaches to solving them, are reviewed. Areas investigated include the stall hammershock at the engine inlet, distortion-induced vibration in fan and compressor blading, modeling engine static structures with conical-shell finite elements, design and development of low-cost, self-contained bearing lubrication systems for turbine engines, and roller bearing slip and skidding damage. Individual items are announced in this issue.

Solar-heated swimming school--Wilmington, Delaware

Report describes operation, installation, and performance of solar-energy system which provides alternative to natural gas pool heating. System is comprised of 2,500 square feet of liquid flat-plate collectors connected to 3,600 galloon; gallongalloon storage tank, with microcomputer-based controls. Extension of building incorporates vertical-wall, passive collection system which provides quarter of heated fresh air for office.

The possibility of making the antenna of an MST radar too large is pointed out. It is not that the signal ceases to become stronger beyond some critical antenna size; the received scattered signal actually becomes weaker as the antenna size is increased whenever the target is in the near field, Fresnel region of the antenna. The Arecibo antenna is a case in point. It is supposed that MST work would benefit to use a feed which illuminated only a portion of the dish.

Space plasma simulations; Proceedings of the Second International School for Space Simulations, Kapaa, HI, February 4-15, 1985. Parts 1 & 2

Space plasma simulations, observations, and theories are discussed. Papers are presented on the capabilities of various types of simulation codes and simulation models. Consideration is given to plasma waves in the earth's magnetotail, outer planet magnetosphere, geospace, and the auroral and polar cap regions. Topics discussed include space plasma turbulent dissipation, the kinetics of plasma waves, wave-particle interactions, whistler mode propagation, global energy regulation, and auroral arc formation.

NORSTAR Project: Norfolk public schools student team for acoustical research

Development of the NORSTAR (Norfolk Public Student Team for Acoustical Research) Project includes the definition, design, fabrication, testing, analysis, and publishing the results of an acoustical experiment. The student-run program is based on a space flight organization similar to the Viking Project. The experiment will measure the scattering transfer of momentum from a sound field to spheres in a liquid medium. It is hoped that the experimental results will shed light on a difficult physics problem - the difference in scattering cross section (the overall effect of the sound wave scattering) for solid spheres and hollow spheres of differing wall thicknesses.

Combustion/particle sizing experiments at the Naval Postgraduate School Combustion Research Laboratory

Particle behavior in combustion processes is an active research area at NPS. Currently, four research efforts are being conducted: (1) There is a long standing need to better understand the soot production and combustion processes in gas turbine combustors, both from a concern for improved engine life and to minimize exhaust particulates. Soot emissions are strongly effected by fuel composition and additives; (2) A more recent need for particle sizing/behavior measurements is in the combustor of a solid fuel ramjet which uses a metallized fuel. High speed motion pictures are being used to study rather large burning particles; (3) In solid propellant rocket motors, metals are used to improve specific impulse and/or to provide damping for combustion pressure oscillations. Particle sizing experiments are being conducted using diode arrays to measure the light intensity as a function of scattering angle; (4) Once a good quality hologram is attained, a need exists for obtaining the particle distributions from hologram in a short period of time. A Quantimet 720 Image Analyzer is being used to reconstruct images.
