Simultaneous control and structure design for large space structures

The problem of developing design guidelines for the simultaneous selection of control and structural parameters is addressed. One guideline is offered for the case of vibration suppression due to disturbances. The effect of structural design changes is examined by means of a parameterized LQG compensator. It is shown that using the LQG design provides a simple means to evaluate simultaneous control and design changes.

Finite element simulations involving simultaneous multiple interface fronts in phase change problems

The present paper describes the simulation of phase change problems involving simultaneous multiple interface fronts employing the finite element method. Much of the past investigations employing finite elements have been restricted to primarily a single phase change situation. The existence of more than one phase, that is, the presence of multiple phase fronts poses certain challenges and further complications. However, the results provide a very interesting thermal behavior for this class of problems. In this paper, attention is focused on fixed grid methods and the trapezoidal family of one-step methods using the enthalpy formulations. Illustrative examples which handle simultaneous multiple fronts in phase change problems are presented.

Simultaneous ROSAT, Ginga, VLA, IUE, and optical observations of the bright quasar H1821+643

Simultaneous optical, UV, and X-ray spectroscopy of the low-redshift high-luminosity QSO H1821+643 is presented in order to examine the connection between the optical UV bump and the soft X-ray excess. The correlation of the short-term variability in the optical/UV and soft X-ray band is examined, and the applicability of the accretion disk models to the simultaneous continuum energy distribution is tested. By fitting the continuum energy distribution with the thin accretion disk model, it was found that bare disk models cannot easily account for the emission in both the UV and the steep excess in the soft X-ray band. The intrinsic X-ray spectrum of H1821+643 exhibited a typical power-law slope above about 0.3 keV, as detected by ROSAT and Ginga. The first detection of H1821+643 in the radio band is reported. This radio-quiet QSO was found to have a substantial radio flux at 20 cm and a typical steep spectral slope.

Nearly simultaneous observations of chromospheric and coronal radiative losses of cool stars

The flux-flux relationships of cool stars are studied on the basis of nearly simultaneous measurements of Ca II H+K, Mg II h+k, and soft X-ray fluxes. A linear relationship is derived between IUE Mg II h+k fluxes and Mount Wilson Ca II H+K fluxes which were obtained within 36 hr of each other for a sample of 26 F5-K3 main-sequence stars. Nearly simultaneous EXOSAT soft X-ray fluxes are compared with Ca II H+K fluxes for a sample of 20 dwarfs and gaints with spectral types ranging from F6 to K2, and 72 additional cool stars for which noncontemporaneous Ca II H+K and EINSTEIN soft X-ray fluxes are available are compared. It is confirmed that a nonradiatively heated chromosphere exists on even the least active main-sequence stars. This basal chromosphere is probably independent of stellar magnetic activity.

Simultaneous observations of H(+) and O(+) ions at two altitudes by the Akebono and Dynamics Explorer 1 satellites

Simultaneous observations of H(+) and O(+) ions from the suprathermal ion mass spectrometer on Akebono and the energetic ion composition spectrometer on Dynamics Explorer 1 are reported. These observations were performed simultaneously above and below regions of ion acceleration on auroral and polar cap magnetic field lines. The evening auroral zonal data directly confirm the existence of an ionospheric preenergization mechanism for oxygen ions. The preenergized oxygen ions have characteristic energies of the order of 10 eV and are transported to altitudes of several thousand kilometers where they acquire significant additional energy. The data indicate that the creation (energization) and transport of streams of upflowing ions in the polar cap is more complex than previously anticipated.

Simultaneous solution for core magnetic field and fluid flow beneath an electrically conducting mantle

The effects of laterally homogeneous mantle electrical conductivity were included in steady, frozen-flux core surface flow estimation along with refinements in method and weighting. The refined method allows simultaneous solution for both the initial radial geomagnetic field component at the core-mantle boundary (CMB) and the sub-adjacent fluid motion; it also features Gauss' method for solving the non-linear inverse problem associated with steady motional induction. The tradeoff between spatial complexity of the derived flows and misfit to the weighted Definitive Geomagnetic Reference Field models (DGRF's) is studied for various mantle conductivity profiles. For simple flow and a fixed initial geomagnetic condition, a fairly high deep-mantle conductivity performs better than either insulating or weakly conducting profiles; however, a thin, very high conductivity layer at the base of the mantle performs almost as well. Simultaneous solution for both initial geomagnetic field and flow reduces the misfit per degree of freedom even more than does changing the mantle conductivity profile. Moreover, when both core field and flow are estimated, the performance of the solutions and the derived flows become insensitive to the conductivity profile.

Simultaneous optical/gamma ray observations of GRB's

The photographic sky patrols of the Observatories Sonneberg (FRG), Ondrejov (CSFR), Odessa (Ukraine) are used to look for patrol plates which were exposed simultaneously with a gamma-ray burst (GRB) detected by gamma ray observations. The results for the first year of data are presented. For several GRB plates which contain the GRB location, and the exposure time of which contains the time of the GRB are presented. The results of the research for optical flashes on these simultaneous plates are discussed.

Investigation of catalytic reduction and filter techniques for simultaneous measurements of NO, NO2, and HNO3 in the stratosphere

A concept for measuring stratospheric NOy-species is presented which utilizes the catalytic reduction of NO2 and HNO3 over heated metal catalysts and the chemisorption of HNO3 on Nylon. Using the Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy (MPAE) chemiluminescent balloon-borne sonde, stratospheric NO and NO2 profiles have been measured since 1983. NO is detected by chemiluminescence produced in reaction with O3 while NO2 needs first to be converted to NO over a heated stainless steel catalyst. To improve this technique for simultaneously measuring HNO3, the catalytic reduction of NO2 and HNO3 over several metal catalysts and the chemisorption of NO2 and HNO3 on Nylon have been investigated in laboratory tests. The results of these tests under simulated stratospheric conditions are presented in detail in this paper. They demonstrate that the simultaneous measurement of NO, NO2 and HNO3 is indeed possible with the combination of stainless steel or Au as a catalyst and a nylon filter.

Simultaneous three-dimensional velocity and mixing measurements by use of laser Doppler velocimetry and fluorescence probes in a water tunnel

A water tunnel investigation was conducted to demonstrate the capabilities of a laser-based instrument that can measure velocity and fluorescence intensity simultaneously. Fluorescence intensity of an excited fluorescent dye is directly related to concentration level and is used to indicate the extent of mixing in flow. This instrument is a three-dimensional laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) in combination with a fluorometer for measuring fluorescence intensity variations. This capability allows simultaneous flow measurements of the three orthogonal velocity components and mixing within the same region. Two different flows which were generated by two models were studied: a generic nonaxisymmetric nozzle propulsion simulation model with an auxiliary internal water source that generated a jet flow and an axisymmetric forebody model with a circular sector strake that generated a vortex flow. The off-body flow fields around these models were investigated in the Langley 16- by 24-Inch Water Tunnel. The experimental results were used to calculate 17 quantities that included mean and fluctuating velocities, Reynolds stresses, mean and fluctuating dye fluorescence intensities (proportional to concentration), and fluctuating velocity and dye concentration correlations. An uncertainty analysis was performed to establish confidence levels in the experimental results. In general, uncertainties in mean velocities varied between 1 and 7 percent of free-stream velocity; uncertainties in fluctuating velocities varied between 1 and 5 percent of reference values. The results show characteristics that are unique to each type of flow.

Raman lidar profiling of atmospheric water vapor: Simultaneous measurements with two collocated systems

Raman lidar is a leading candidate for providing the detailed space- and time-resolved measurements of water vapor needed by a variety of atmospheric studies. Simultaneous measurements of atmospheric water vapor are described using two collocated Raman lidar systems. These lidar systems, developed at the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center and Sandia National Laboratories, acquired approximately 12 hours of simultaneous water vapor data during three nights in November 1992 while the systems were collocated at the Goddard Space Flight Center. Although these lidar systems differ substantially in their design, measured water vapor profiles agreeed within 0.15 g/kg between altitudes of 1 and 5 km. Comparisons with coincident radiosondes showed all instruments agreed within 0.2 g/kg in this same altitude range. Both lidars also clearly showed the advection of water vapor in the middle troposphere and the pronounced increase in water vapor in the nocturnal boundary layer that occurred during one night.

Surface measurements of solar irradiance: A study of the spatial correlation between simultaneous measurements at separated sites

Pyranometers have been used for many years to measure broadband surface incoming solar irradiance, data that is necessary for surface energy budget, cloud forcing, and satellite validation research. Because such measurements are made at a specific location, it is unclear how representative they may be of a larger area. This study attempts to determine a reasonable spacing between measurement sites for such research by computing the correlation, and standard deviation from perfect correlation, between simultaneous measurements of incoming solar irradiance for a network of surface measurement sites covering a 75 km x 75 km area. Using 1-min data collected from this network of 11 sites during the NASA First ISSCP Radiation Experiment/Surface Radiation Budget (FIRE/SRB) Project temporal averages were calculated. The correlation between any two of these sites was determined by comparing simultaneous measurement averages for the 55 possible combinations of site pairs, along with the distances between them. In an attempt to remove the effect of the diurnal cycle, thus leaving clouds as the primary influence on correlation of the radiation field, model results for a clear day were used to normalize measured irradiances and correlations were again calculated.

Tool For Driving Many Fasteners Simultaneously

Proposed tool tightens or loosens several bolts, screws, nuts, or other threaded fasteners arranged in circle on compressor head, automotive wheel, pipe-end flange, or similar object. Enables assembly or disassembly in fraction of time needed to tighten fasteners one at a time. Simultaneously applies same torque to all fasteners, preventing distortion and enhancing reliability. Concept not limited to circular fastener patterns. Adapted to rectangular configurations like on engine intake manifolds, by adding gears to drive train to provide proper spacing. Designed to deliver fixed or adjustable maximum torque. To ensure even seal loading, piston pressure simultaneously ramped from initial to final values to maintain relatively constant torque loading on all fasteners until final specifications limit achieved.

Simultaneous X-ray and Far-Ultraviolet Spectra of AGN with ASCA and HUT

We obtained ASCA spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516 in March 1995. Simultaneous far-UV observations were obtained with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope on the Astro-2 shuttle mission. The ASCA spectrum shows a lightly absorbed power law of energy index 0.78. The low energy absorbing column is significantly less than previously seen. Prominent 0 VII and 0 VIII absorption edges are visible, but, consistent with the much lower total absorbing column, no Fe K absorption edge is detectable. A weak, narrow Fe K(alpha) emission line from cold material is present as well as a broad Fe K(alpha) line. These features are similar to those reported in other Seyfert 1 galaxies. A single warm absorber model provides only an imperfect description of the low energy absorption. In addition to a highly ionized absorber with ionization parameter U = 1.66 and a total column density of 1.4 x 10(exp 22)/sq cm, adding a lower ionization absorber with U = 0.32 and a total column of 6.9 x 10(exp 21)/sq cm significantly improves the fit. The contribution of resonant line scattering to our warm absorber models limits the Doppler parameter to less than 160 km/s at 90% confidence. Turbulence at the sound speed of the photoionized gas provides the best fit. None of the warm absorber models fit to the X-ray spectrum can match the observed equivalent widths of all the UV absorption lines. Accounting for the X-ray and UV absorption simultaneously requires an absorbing region with a broad range of ionization parameters and column densities.

Hard X-Ray Telescope (HXT) with Simultaneous Multiwavelength Observing from UV to 1 MeV

The Hard X-Ray Telescope Mission Concept Study no longer exists as a possible independent mission. The grazing incidence multilayer telescopes, its major component, are now firmly attached to the Constellation X-Ray Mission. It was determined that the most efficient deployment of a hard X-ray (10 to 100 keV) focussing telescope system is observing simultaneously with a high throughput lower energy spectrometer, providing the rationale for merging with Constellation X. This configuration permits four nearly four decades in energy (.2 to 100 keV) of an object's emission spectrum to be studied simultaneously with good energy resolution. Furthermore, the probability of attaining an independent mission for a hard X-ray telescope system is extremely low.

Low Luminosity States of the Black Hole Candidate GX 339-4: ASCA and Simultaneous Radio/RXTE Observations - 1

We discuss a series of observations of the black hole candidate GX 339-4 in low luminosity, spectrally hard states. We present spectral analysis of three separate archival Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) data sets and eight separate Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) data sets. Three of the RXTE observations were strictly simultaneous with 843 Mega Hertz and 8.3-9.1 Giga Hertz radio observations. All of these observations have (3-9 keV) flux approximately less than 10(exp-9) ergs s(exp-1) CM(exp -2). The ASCA data show evidence for an approximately 6.4 keV Fe line with equivalent width approximately 40 eV, as well as evidence for a soft excess that is well-modeled by a power law plus a multicolor blackbody spectrum with peak temperature approximately equals 150-200 eV. The RXTE data sets also show evidence of an Fe line with equivalent widths approximately equal to 20-1OO eV. Reflection models show a hardening of the RXTE spectra with decreasing X-ray flux; however, these models do not exhibit evidence of a correlation between the photon index of the incident power law flux and the solid angle subtended by the reflector. 'Sphere+disk' Comptonization models and Advection Dominated Accretion Flow (ADAF) models also provide reasonable descriptions of the RXTE data. The former models yield coronal temperatures in the range 20-50 keV and optical depths of r approximately equal to 3. The model fits to the X-ray data, however, do not simultaneously explain the observed radio properties. The most likely source of the radio flux is synchrotron emission from an extended outflow of extent greater than O(10 (exp7) GM/c2).

The Variability and Spectrum of NGC 4051 from Deep, Simultaneous EUVE and XTE Observations

We present timing and spectral analysis of the data collected by the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Satellite (EUVE) for the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 during 1996. NGC 4051 was observed twice in May 1996 and again in December 1996 for a total of more than 200 ksec. The observations were always simultaneous with hard X-ray observations conducted with the X-Ray Timing Explorer (XTE). The EUVE light curves are extremely variable during each observation, with the maximum variability during May 1996 when we registered changes by a factor of 21 over 8 hours and more than a factor of 24 variations from peak to minimum. We detected signal in the EUVE spectrograph in the 75-100 Arange which is well fitted by absorbed power law models. We will illustrate the results of our spectral and detailed power spectrum analysis for the simultaneous EUVE and XTE spectra and light curves and discuss the consequences on possible emission mechanisms.
