Toward autonomous design and synthesis of novel inorganic materials

Autonomous experimentation driven by artificial intelligence (AI) provides an exciting opportunity to revolutionize inorganic materials discovery and development. Herein, we review recent progress in the design of self-driving laboratories, including robotics to automate materials synthesis and characterization, in conjunction with AI to interpret experimental outcomes and propose new experimental procedures. We focus on efforts to automate inorganic synthesis through solution-based routes, solid-state reactions, and thin film deposition. In each case, connections are made to relevant work in organic chemistry, where automation is more common. Characterization techniques are primarily discussed in the context of phase identification, as this task is critical to understand what products have formed during synthesis. The application of deep learning to analyze multivariate characterization data and perform phase identification is examined. To achieve “closed-loop” materials synthesis and design, we further provide a detailed overview of optimization algorithms that use active learning to rationally guide experimental iterations. Lastly, we highlight several key opportunities and challenges for the future development of self-driving inorganic materials synthesis platforms.

Water uptake and energetics of the formation of barium zirconate based multicomponent oxides

A group of multi-component oxides based on BaZrO 3 have been prepared using a solid-state reaction method and examined in terms of their water uptake and thermodynamics of formation. Depending on the type and amount of acceptor substitution, the synthesized compounds exhibit various proton defect concentrations, reaching up to 0.2 mol/mol for a compound containing 10 different elements in the B-sublattice, where 50% of them are acceptors. Further, for the most promising materials, van’t Hoff plots were created and the enthalpies and entropies of hydration were calculated. At higher temperatures, these parameters do not differ from the values for the reference yttrium doped barium zirconate. However, at lower temperatures they are more negative, indicating a more exothermic process of proton incorporation.

MultiTaskDeltaNet: change detection-based image segmentation for operando ETEM with application to carbon gasification kinetics

Transforming in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging into a tool for spatially-resolved operando characterization of solid-state reactions requires automated, high-precision semantic segmentation of dynamically evolving features. However, traditional deep learning methods for semantic segmentation often face limitations due to the scarcity of labeled data, visually ambiguous features of interest, and scenarios involving small objects. To tackle these challenges, we introduce MultiTaskDeltaNet (MTDN), a novel deep learning architecture that creatively reconceptualizes the segmentation task as a change detection problem. By implementing a unique Siamese network with a U-Net backbone and using paired images to capture feature changes, MTDN effectively leverages minimal data to produce high-quality segmentations. Furthermore, MTDN utilizes a multi-task learning strategy to exploit correlations between physical features of interest. In an evaluation using data from in situ environmental TEM (ETEM) videos of filamentous carbon gasification, MTDN demonstrated a significant advantage over conventional segmentation models, particularly in accurately delineating fine structural features. Notably, MTDN achieved a 10.22% performance improvement over conventional segmentation models in predicting small and visually ambiguous physical features. This work bridges key gaps between deep learning and practical TEM image analysis, advancing automated characterization of nanomaterials in complex experimental settings.

Bi aliovalent substitution in Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 garnets: Structural and ionic conductivity effects

We report on the synthesis of cubic-phase garnet-type solid-state electrolytes based on Bi-doped Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO). Bi aliovalent substitution of Zr in LLZO utilizing the Pechini processing method is employed to synthesize Li 7-x La 3 Zr 2-x Bi x O 12 compounds. A strong dependence of the ionic conductivity on Bi content is observed, and under our synthesis and sintering conditions, a >100-fold increase over the un-doped sample is observed for x=0.75. Cubic-phase Li 6 La 3 Zr 1 BiO 12 compounds are generated upon annealing in air in the temperature range 650 °C-900 °C. In contrast, in the absence of Bi, the cubic garnet phase of Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 is not formed below 700 °C and a transformation to the tetragonal phase is observed at similar to 900 °C for this un-doped compound. The role of Bi in lowering the formation temperature of the garnet cubic phase and in the ionic conductivity improvements is investigated in this work. We ascribe the effect of Bi-doping on ionic conductivity increments to changes in Li + -site occupancy and lattice parameters and the reduction in the formation temperature for the cubic-phase formation to rate enhancements of the solid-state reaction. To identify the site occupancy of Bi in the garnet structure, we employ synchrotron extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. Our results indicate that Bi additions occupy the Zr-type sites exclusively, to within the accuracy of the measurements.

Structural, magneto transport and magnetic properties of Ruddlesden–Popper La 2-2x Sr 1+2x Mn 2 O 7 (0.42≤x≤0.52) layered manganites

The magneto transport of Ruddlesden–Popper, La 2-2x Sr 1+2x Mn 2 O 7 (0.42≤x≤0.52), 2-dimensional bilayered manganites have been investigated in a broad temperature range. The samples have been synthesized using the solid-state reaction method. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray diffraction data indicates the tetragonal structure formation with I4/mmm space group. The resistivity curves of the samples present a general characteristic of metal-insulator (MI) transition at certain temperature (T MI ). Besides, for samples with x = 0.48, 0.50, and 0.52, at a certain temperature (T CO ) well below T MI the charge ordering is also evident. Furthermore, the samples display a shallow upturn in resistivity below T min due to the Kondo like spin scattering effect, weak localization and electron-phonon interaction. The high temperature semiconducting (T>T MI ) region, the resistivity curve follows the 3D Mott’s variable hopping transport mechanism. The overall suppression of resistivity accounts for a substantial magnetoresistance by applying a magnetic field and the characteristic change in T MI , T CO , and T min are discussed. Temperature-dependent magnetization demonstrates the suppression of ferromagnetism and evident of antiferromagnetic nature with an apparent charge ordering with increasing concentration of Sr 2+ .

Study of structural, transport and magneto-crystalline anisotropy in La 1-x Sr x MnO 3 (0.30 ≤ x ≤ 0.40) perovskite manganites

In this paper we present structural, transport, magnetic and magneto-crystalline anisotropy of La 1–x Sr x MnO 3 (х = 0.30, 0.33, 0.36, and 0.40) synthesized using the solid-state reaction method. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the samples is well indexed to the rhombohedral structure with R 3 - c space group. Lattice parameters and unit cell volume are found to decrease monotonically upon increasing Sr 2+ concentration at La 3+ site. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms the presence of Mn 4+ and Mn 3+ , the ratio of which (Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ ) increases from 0.44 to 0.64 with increasing Sr 2+ concentration. From the ρ(T) and M(T) data analysis, we find that T MI and M S are larger for x = 0.33 composition, suggesting a weakening of the double-exchange interaction due to competing super-exchange interactions in x = 0.30, 0.36 and 0.40 samples. We calculated MCA constant (K 1 ) by fitting the saturation magnetisation data at a higher magnetic field using the law of approach model, M = M S [1-a/H-b/H 2 ]-χH with K 1 2 = (105/8)bMs 2 and is in the order of 10 5 erg/cm 3 .

A density-wave-like transition in the polycrystalline V 3 Sb 2 sample with bilayer kagome lattice

Recently, transition-metal-based kagome metals have aroused much research interest as a novel platform to explore exotic topological quantum phenomena. Here we report on the synthesis, structure, and physical properties of a bilayer kagome lattice compound V 3 Sb 2 . The polycrystalline V 3 Sb 2 samples were synthesized by conventional solid-state-reaction method in a sealed quartz tube at temperatures below 850 °C. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility and resistivity revealed consistently a density-wave-like transition at T dw ≈ 160 K with a large thermal hysteresis, even though some sample-dependent behaviors were observed presumably due to the different preparation conditions. Upon cooling through T dw , no strong anomaly in lattice parameters and no indication of symmetry lowering were detected in powder x-ray diffraction measurements. This transition can be suppressed completely by applying hydrostatic pressures of about 1.8 GPa, around which no sign of superconductivity was observed down to 1.5 K. Specific-heat measurements revealed a relatively large Sommerfeld coefficient γ = 18.5 mJ∙mol –1 ∙K –2 , confirming the metallic ground state with moderate electronic correlations. Density functional theory calculations indicate that V 3 Sb 2 shows a non-trivial topological crystalline property. Furthermore, our study makes V 3 Sb 2 a new candidate of metallic kagome compound to study the interplay between density-wave-order, nontrivial band topology, and possible superconductivity.

Structure and tunable temperature coefficient of magnetization of Mn 4-x Ga x C alloys prepared by induction melting method

The magnetization of most magnetic materials decreases monotonically with increasing temperature. In this work, we found that the temperature coefficient of magnetization of Mn 4-x Ga x C alloys can be tuned from negative values to positive values by controlling the composition x. The antiperovskite type Mn 4-x Ga x C (0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.75) alloys were prepared by using induction melting method, which is more efficient in large-scale production and obtaining full-density alloys in comparison with the traditional solid-state-reaction method. The values of the temperature coefficient of magnetization of Mn 4-x Ga x C change continuously from negative to positive with decreasing x. The Mn 4-x Ga x C alloys with highly thermal-stable magnetization is expected to present in the composition range of 0.15 < x < 0.25. The saturation magnetization of Mn 4-x Ga x C increases with increasing x, owing to the reduced number of antiferromagnetically coupled Mn atoms at the cubic corner with the face centered Mn atoms. Most Mn 4-x Ga x C alloys with varying x display near-zero remanent magnetization and coercivity at room temperature. The Currie temperature of Mn 4-x Ga x C decreases with increasing x. The x-ray photoelectron spectra of Mn 2p, Ga 2p, and C 1 s reveal distinct splitting due to the diverse chemical states of these atoms at different lattice positions and/or phases. Our work has developed a class of alloys capable of offering a desired temperature coefficient of magnetization across a broad temperature range, thereby offering a method to manipulate the thermodynamics of magnetization.

Sr 1-x Ca x Fe 1-y Co y O 3-δ as facile and tunable oxygen sorbents for chemical looping air separation

Abstract Chemical looping air separation (CLAS) is a promising technology for oxygen generation with high efficiency. The key challenge for CLAS is to design robust oxygen sorbents with suitable redox properties and fast redox kinetics. In this work, perovskite-structured Sr 1-x Ca x Fe 1-y Co y O 3 oxygen sorbents were investigated and demonstrated for oxygen production with tunable redox properties, high redox rate, and excellent thermal/steam stability. Cobalt doping at B site was found to be highly effective, 33% improvement in oxygen productivity was observed at 500 °C. Moreover, it stabilizes the perovskite structure and prevents phase segregation under pressure swing conditions in the presence of steam. Scalable synthesis of Sr 0.8 Ca 0.2 Fe 0.4 Co 0.6 O 3 oxygen sorbents was carried out through solid state reaction, co-precipitation, and sol-gel methods. Both co-precipitation and sol-gel methods are capable of producing Sr 0.8 Ca 0.2 Fe 0.4 Co 0.6 O 3 sorbents with satisfactory phase purity, high oxygen capacity, and fast redox kinetics. Large scale evaluation of Sr 0.8 Ca 0.2 Fe 0.4 Co 0.6 O 3 , using an automated CLAS testbed with over 300 g sorbent loading, further demonstrated the effectiveness of the oxygen sorbent to produce 95% pure O 2 with a satisfactory productivity of 0.04 g O2 g sorbent −1 h −1 at 600 °C.

Ferrimagnetic Order in Tetragonal Antiperovskite Mn3GeN

The crystal and magnetic structures of the nitride antiperovskite M⁢n3⁢GeN reveals ferrimagnetic order stemming from a distorted kagome-derived lattice of the Mn atoms. Polycrystalline M⁢n3⁢GeN was synthesized via a solid-state reaction and characterized using neutron powder diffraction, dc magnetometry, and first-principles calculations. Rietveld refinement reveals near-stoichiometric composition (M⁢n3⁢Ge⁢N0.992⁢(7)) adopting a tetragonal 𝐼⁢4/𝑚⁢𝑐⁢𝑚 structure at 𝑇=500K and below, featuring axially distorted and tilted [NM⁢n6] octahedra that result in a buckled Mn kagome lattice. On heating, the tetragonal distortion and octahedral tilt angle decrease continuously before transitioning to the cubic 𝑃⁢𝑚⁢3⁢𝑚 antiperovskite phase at 𝑇≈527K. Neutron diffraction and magnetometry together reveal noncollinear ferrimagnetic ordering. For 30K≤𝑇≤500K, the magnetic structure is described by magnetic space group 𝐼⁢𝑏⁢𝑎′⁢𝑚′ (72.544), with inequivalent Mn1 and Mn2 sublattices that couple antiferromagnetically to yield a net moment. Density-functional theory-based calculations show that the different local moments originate from the bandwidths associated with distinct Mn–N bond lengths. Temperature-dependent refinements reveal distinct differences in the thermal disordering profiles of the Mn1 and Mn2 sublattices. These findings reveal a subtlety in the magnetic and structural behavior of M⁢n3⁢GeN, highlighting the interplay between structural distortions, magnetic ordering, and electronic structure in kagome-derived antiperovskite materials.

Canted antiferromagnetism in the quasi-one-dimensional iron chalcogenide BaFe 2 Se 4

We report the synthesis and physical properties studies of quasi-one-dimensional (quais-1D) iron chalcogenide BaFe 2 Se 4 which shares the FeSe 4 tetrahedra building motif commonly seen in the iron chalcogenide superconductors. A high-quality polycrystalline sample was achieved by solid-state reaction method and characterized by x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and neutron diffraction measurements. BaFe 2 Se 4 is a narrow gap semiconductor that magnetically orders at ~310 K. Therefore, both neutron powder diffraction results and isothermal M-H loops suggest a canted antiferromagnetic structure where Fe sublattices are antiferromagnetically ordered along the c-axis quasi-1D chain direction, resulting in a net ferromagnetic moment in the perpendicular direction along the a axis with tilted angle of 18.7° towards the b axis.

MgPd 2 Sb : A Mg-based Heusler-type superconductor

Here, we report the synthesis and physical properties of a full Heusler compound, MgPd 2 Sb, which we found to show superconductivity below T c = 2.2 K . MgPd 2 Sb was obtained by a two-step solid-state reaction method and its purity and cubic crystal structure [Fm-3m, a = 6.4523(1) Å ] were confirmed by powder x-ray diffraction. Normal and superconducting states were studied by electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. The results show that MgPd 2 Sb is a type-II, weak coupling superconductor ( λ e-p = 0.53 ). The observed pressure dependence of T c (ΔT c /p ≈ -0.23 K / GPa ) is one of the strongest reported for a superconducting Heusler compound. The electronic structure, phonons, and electron-phonon coupling in MgPd 2 Sb were theoretically investigated. The obtained results are in agreement with the experiment, confirming the electron-phonon coupling mechanism of superconductivity. We compare the superconducting parameters to those of all reported Heusler-type superconductors.

Competing magnetic states in multiferroic BaYFeO 4 : A high magnetic field study

Spin-driven ferroelectricity phenomena have drawn great interest in the scientific community due to potential application in spintronics and their complex physical mechanisms. A noticeable example of this is multiferroic BaYFeO 4 that exhibits an unconventional magnetoelectric (ME) coupling due to the uncorrelated behavior of the ferroelectric and cycloidal states under an applied magnetic field. To shed more light on this spin-driven ME effect, a high-quality sample of BaYFeO 4 was synthesized by a standard solid-state reaction method, and its high-field (up to 9 T) magnetic properties have been systematically investigated by means of magnetometry, magnetocaloric effect, and Mössbauer measurements over a wide temperature range (5–400 K). In addition, its crystal and magnetic structures have been studied using x-ray and neutron powder diffraction. Results obtained in this work indicate that Fe spins form a long-range spin density wave (SDW) antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at $T_{\text{N1}}$ ~ 50K, which transforms into the cycloidal AFM order at $T_{\text{N2}}$ ~ 35K. A spin-glass-like state emerges below $T^\ast$ ~ 17K, and coexists with the long-range cycloidal AFM one in this temperature range. Magnetocaloric and Mössbauer measurements consistently confirm the robustness of both the long-range SDWand cycloidal AFM orders under applied magnetic fields up to 6 T, whereas the spin-glass state is converted into the ferromagnetic (FM) state when the applied magnetic field exceeds 1 T. These findings pinpoint the fact that the magnetic field evolution of spin correlations from the AFM to FM character in the spin-glass state is responsible for the magnetic field dependence of ferroelectricity in BaYFeO 4 .

Magnetic properties of the quasi-XY Shastry-Sutherland magnet ER 2 Be 2 SiO 7

Polycrystalline and single-crystal samples of the insulating Shastry-Sutherland compound Er 2 ⁢Be 2 ⁢SiO 7 were synthesized via a solid-state reaction and the floating zone method, respectively. The crystal structure, Er single-ion anisotropy, zero-field magnetic ground state, and magnetic phase diagrams along high-symmetry crystallographic directions were investigated with bulk measurement techniques, x-ray and neutron diffraction, and neutron spectroscopy. Here, we establish that Er 2 ⁢Be 2 ⁢SiO 7 crystallizes in a tetragonal space group with planes of orthogonal Er dimers and a strong preference for the Er moments to lie in the local plane perpendicular to each dimer bond. We also find that this system has a noncollinear ordered ground state in zero field with a transition temperature of 0.841 K consisting of antiferromagnetic dimers and in-plane moments. Finally, we mapped out the H-T phase diagrams for Er 2 ⁢Be 2 ⁢SiO 7 along the directions H ∥ [001], [100], and [110]. While an increasing in-plane field simply induces a phase transition to a field-polarized phase, we identify three metamagnetic transitions in the H ∥ [001] case. Single-crystal neutron diffraction results reveal that the H ∥ [001] phase diagram can be explained predominantly by the expected field-induced behavior of classical, anisotropic moments, although the microscopic origin of one phase requires further investigation.

Synthesis method comparison of compositionally complex rare earth-based Ruddlesden–Popper n = 1 T'-type cuprates

The multicomponent approach has been successfully expanded to the Ruddlesden–Popper structure with the synthesis of two different high-entropy cuprate compositions: (La 0.2 Nd 0.2 Gd 0.2 Tb 0.2 Dy 0.2 ) 2 CuO 4 and (La 0.2 Pr 0.2 Nd 0.2 Sm 0.2 Eu 0.2 ) 2 CuO 4 . Additionally, the effect of synthesis method is explored using both solid-state reaction and polymeric steric entrapment (PSE) methods. It is found that PSE leads to more randomly distributed cation species, providing an advantageous method of synthesis for the growing field of high entropy oxides. In situ high-temperature x-ray diffraction tracks the amorphous to crystalline phase transformation in (La 0.2 Nd 0.2 Gd 0.2 Tb 0.2 Dy 0.2 ) 2 CuO 4 powder, synthesized using the PSE method. Using the High-Temperature XRD data, a method for gaining information on the kinetic behavior is also applied. Magnetometry of both compositions indicates ferrimagnetic behavior at low temperatures.

Review—Electrospun Inorganic Solid-State Electrolyte Fibers for Battery Applications

Inorganic solid-state electrolytes (SSEs), especially Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO), are promising candidates for all solid-state batteries. Generally, SSEs are synthesized by solid-state reactions at high temperatures. The high temperature required to synthesize useful polymorphs (e.g., cubic phase, in the case of LLZO) increases their production cost. To lower the synthesis temperature, several approaches, including doping and crystallite size control via sol-gel processes, have been explored. Recently, electrospinning was used to synthesize the inorganic SSE fibers to control the crystallite size and lower the calcination temperature. Several publications followed that investigated the properties of fibers and demonstrated the use of these fibers in inorganic-polymer composite SSEs. This paper presents a concise discussion of electrospinning, the parameters that control fiber morphology, the synthesis of inorganic SSE fibers, the effect of sintering conditions on the fiber morphology and composition, and the recent use of these fibers in making composite SSEs and other battery applications. Additionally, most of the discussion focuses on LLZO, but this paper also discusses applications of other types of electrospun inorganic electrolyte fibers, the challenges of using these fibers, and possible future directions in this research field.
