Multiobjective and categorical global optimization of photonic structures based on ResNet generative neural networks

Abstract We show that deep generative neural networks, based on global optimization networks (GLOnets), can be configured to perform the multiobjective and categorical global optimization of photonic devices. A residual network scheme enables GLOnets to evolve from a deep architecture, which is required to properly search the full design space early in the optimization process, to a shallow network that generates a narrow distribution of globally optimal devices. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, we adapt our method to design thin-film stacks consisting of multiple material types. Benchmarks with known globally optimized antireflection structures indicate that GLOnets can find the global optimum with orders of magnitude faster speeds compared to conventional algorithms. We also demonstrate the utility of our method in complex design tasks with its application to incandescent light filters. These results indicate that advanced concepts in deep learning can push the capabilities of inverse design algorithms for photonics.

Method and apparatus for temperature-gradient aware data-placement for 3D stacked DRAMs

A system including a stack of two or more layers of volatile memory, such as layers of a 3D stacked DRAM memory, places data in the stack based on a temperature or a refresh rate. When a threshold is exceeded, data are moved from a first region to a second region in the stack, the second region having one or both of a second temperature lower than a first temperature of the first region or a second refresh rate lower than a first refresh rate of the first region.

Method of making an airfoil

An improved method of making an airfoil includes stacking plies in two groups. A separator ply is positioned between the two groups of plies. The groups of plies and the separator ply are interconnected to form an airfoil blank. The airfoil blank is shaped, by forging or other methods, to have a desired configuration. The material of the separator ply is then dissolved or otherwise removed from between the two sections of the airfoil blank to provide access to the interior of the airfoil blank. Material is removed from inner sides of the two separated sections to form core receiving cavities. After cores have been placed in the cavities, the two sections of the airfoil blank are interconnected and the shaping of the airfoil is completed. The cores are subsequently removed from the completed airfoil.

Effective Dielectric Passivation Scheme in Area-Selective Front/Back Poly-Si/SiOx Passivating Contact Solar Cells

Despite the high efficiencies reached by heavily doped poly-Si/SiO x passivating contact solar cells, challenges like the high front parasitic absorption still limit their performance. Previously, we showed a wet etching technique using self-aligned metal grids to remove the front poly-Si in the non-metallized region. Here, we focus on the effective dielectric passivation on this tunneling oxide/n + in-diffused region. The effect of poly-Si thickness was studied to balance between the passivation quality and the current gain. We then compared various dielectric passivation schemes using SiN x , Al 2 O 3 , and stacks thereof via injection-level dependent lifetime and the transfer length method. We demonstrate a SiN x /Al 2 O 3 stack yielded the best passivation performance within device process limitation and obtained an improved front/back poly-Si/SiO x passivating contact device, with a short circuit current density of 41.8 mA/cm 2 and an efficiency of 21.8%.

Nonlinear programming optimization of a single-stack electrodialysis desalination system for cost efficiency

Electrodialysis (ED) presents a competitive method for desalinating brackish waters. In this work, we perform cost optimization of a single-stack ED system across a range of feed salinities and water recoveries while optimizing operating voltage, number of cell pairs, and cell length. The results of our optimization show that the levelized cost of water (LCOW) increases with an increase in feed salinity. The outcomes of our optimization show that cost-optimal design generally increases cell length while decreasing cell pair number and operating voltage with an increase in salinity. These trends are nonlinear, with the number of cell pairs and applied voltage exhibiting local maxima when operating at low salinity and high recovery. We discuss the underlying mechanism for cell length becoming a leveraging design parameter by inspecting the length-dependent profiles of key electrochemical properties of the ED cell. Finally, we present how increasing performance metrics and decreasing costs impact LCOW, demonstrating that innovations that decrease counter-current diffusion have resulted in the highest decrease of LCOW.

SDSS-IV MaNGA: a catalogue of spectroscopically detected strong galaxy–galaxy lens candidates

ABSTRACT We spectroscopically detected candidate emission-lines of 8 likely, 17 probable, and 69 possible strong galaxy–galaxy gravitational lens candidates found within the spectra of $\approx 10\, 000$ galaxy targets contained within the completed Mapping of Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory survey. This search is based upon the methodology of the Spectroscopic Identification of Lensing Objects project, which extends the spectroscopic detection methods of the BOSS Emission-Line Lensing Survey and the Sloan Lens ACS Survey. We scanned the co-added residuals that we constructed from stacks of foreground subtracted row-stacked-spectra so a sigma-clipping method can be used to reject cosmic rays and other forms of transients that impact only a small fraction of the combined exposures. We also constructed narrow-band images from the signal to noise of the co-added residuals to observe signs of lensed source images. We also use several methods to compute the probable strong lensing regime for each candidate lens to determine which candidate background galaxies may reside sufficiently near the galaxy centre for strong lensing to occur. We present the spectroscopic redshifts within a value-added catalogue (VAC) for data release 17 (DR17) of SDSS-IV. We also present the lens candidates, spectroscopic data, and narrow-band images within a VAC for DR17. High resolution follow-up imaging of these lens candidates are expected to yield a sample of confirmed grade-A lenses with sufficient angular size to probe possible discrepancies between the mass derived from a best-fitting lens model, and the dynamical mass derived from the observed stellar velocities.

Stacked Corrugated Horn Rings

This Brief describes a method of machining and assembly when the depth of corrugations far exceeds the width and conventional machining is not practical. The horn is divided into easily machined, individual rings with shoulders to control the depth. In this specific instance, each of the corrugations is identical in profile, and only differs in diameter and outer profile. The horn is segmented into rings that are cut with an interference fit (zero clearance with all machining errors biased toward contact). The interference faces can be cut with a reverse taper to increase the holding strength of the joint. The taper is a compromise between the interference fit and the clearance of the two faces during assembly. Each internal ring is dipped in liquid nitrogen, then nested in the previous, larger ring. The ring is rotated in the nest until the temperature of the two parts equalizes and the pieces lock together. The resulting assay is stable, strong, and has an internal finish that cannot be achieved through other methods.

Magnetic multilayer edges in Bernal-stacked hexagonal boron nitride

Single-layer h-BN is known to have edges with unique magnetism; however, in the commonly fabricated multilayer AA'-h-BN, edge relaxations occur that create interlayer bonds and eliminate the unpaired electrons at the edge. Recently, a robust method of growing the unconventional Bernal-stacked h-BN (AB-h-BN) has been reported. Here, we use theoretical approaches to investigate the nitrogen-terminated zigzag edges in AB-h-BN that can be formed in a controlled fashion using a high-energy electron beam. We find that these "open"edges remain intact in bilayer and multilayer AB-h-BN, enabling researchers potentially to investigate these edge states experimentally. We also investigate the thermodynamics of the spin configurations at the edge by constructing a lattice model that is based on parameters extracted from a set of first-principles calculations. We find that the edge spins in neighboring layers interact very weakly, resulting in a sequence of independent spin chains in multilayer samples. By solving this model using Monte Carlo simulations, we can determine nm-scale correlation lengths at liquid-N 2 temperatures and lower. At low temperatures, these edges may be utilized in magnetoresistance and spintronics applications.

A four-channel portable solar radiometer for measuring particulate and/or aerosol opacity and concentration of NO2 and SO2 in stack plumes

Solar absorption radiometry has been investigated as a method of measuring stackplume effluents. A simple and inexpensive instrument was constructed for observing the sun at four wavelengths: 800, 600, 400, and 310 nm. Higher wavelength channels measured the effect of the particulates and NO2, and an ultraviolet channel measured the contribution of SO2 to the attenuation. Stack-plume measurements of opacity and concentration of NO2 and SO2 were in basic agreement with in-stack measurements. The major limitation on the use of the radiometer is the requirement for an accessible viewing position which allows the sun-plume-observer relationship to be attained. It was concluded that the solar radiometer offers an inexpensive method for monitoring plume effluents when the viewing position is not restricted.

AlphaBuilding ResCommunity: A multi-agent virtual testbed for community-level load coordination

Training and validating algorithms in a simulation testbed can accelerate research and applications of optimal control of residential loads to improve energy flexibility and grid resilience. We developed an open-source simulation environment, AlphaBuilding ResCommunity, that can be used to train and validate algorithms to control a single thermostatically controlled load (TCL) or coordinate a group of TCLs. We used reduced-order models to simulate the thermodynamics of TCLs, and the parameter values were determined from the connected smart thermostat data of real households. The environment was built upon the standardized OpenAI Gym interface. Ancillary functions, such as retrieving the parameters and weather forecasts, are provided to facilitate control strategies that require predictive information. Compared with existing efforts, AlphaBuilding ResCommunity has three advantages: (1) more realistic model settings because the parameter values are identified from actual household operating data, and modelling and measurement uncertainty are considered; (2) passive thermal storage control; and (3) ease of use due to a simple software dependency and standardized interface. We demonstrated the applications of the environment by implementing a Kalman Filter and Model Predictive Control on a single TCL and a Priority-Stack-Based Control and Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers to coordinate multiple TCLs for load tracking.

Cryogenic EM Across Length Scales for Li Metal Anode Batteries

An interfacial understanding is necessary for developing strategies to commercialize high-energy density rechargeable lithium metal anode batteries, as currently, the lithium anode/electrolyte interface is unstable with prolonged cycling. We have used several strategies to improve the cycling performance of lithium metal anodes, including reducing the parasitic reactions between lithium metal and the electrolyte, and improving the electrodeposited lithium metal morphology. These strategies have generated unconclusive electrochemical data, that has required the need for nanoscale interfacial characterization of these solid-liquid interfaces. Our team has used the cryogenic transfer workflow developed by Leica in collaboration with cryo-SEM/FIB tools by Thermo Fisher Scientific to cross-section lithium metal anodes and intact coin cell batteries to observe the interfacial structures, lithium morphology, and failure mechanisms relative to changes in electrode contract pressure and electrolyte chemistry. Cross-sectional SEM images and EDS maps of the lithium metal anodes have provided a better understanding of the electrodeposited lithium morphology, quantity of 'dead' lithium metal, and quantity of solid electrolyte interphase material that has formed alongside the lithium metal. In understanding lithium metal battery failure at the system level, we used a cryogenic stage in a laser plasma FIB to cross-section through the coin cell's cap for imaging/mapping the entire battery stack under cryogenic conditions. The tools, methods, and results of these studies will be detailed in this presentation.
