Magnetism and T-x phase diagrams of Na- and Ag-substituted EuCd 2 As 2

EuCd 2 As 2 is an antiferromagnetic semimetal, that can host non-trivial topological properties, depending upon its magnetic state and excitations. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of Eu(Cd 1-x Ag x ) 2 As 2 and Eu 1-y Na y Cd 2 As 2 , and study the evolution and nature of magnetic order with doping. Temperature-substitution phase diagrams are constructed from the electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility data. We observe a splitting of the magnetic transition into two different transitions, and the gradual increase in one of the transition temperatures with Agand Na-substitution. The other transition remains more or less independent of doping. Further, we show that a magnetic state with a net ferromagnetic moment is stabilized by both Ag and Na doping and this can be explained by considering the changes in band filling due to substitution as suggested by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We thus show that chemical substitution and the subsequent changes in band filling could be a pathway to tune the magnetic ground state and to stabilize a ferromagnetic phase in EuCd 2 As 2 .

Structure and lattice excitations of the copper substituted lead oxyapatite Pb 9.06⁢(7)⁢ Cu 0.94⁢(6)⁢ (PO 3.92⁢(4) ) 6 ⁢O 0.96⁢(3)

The copper substituted lead oxyapatite, Pb 10-x⁢ Cu x (PO 3.92⁢(4) ) 6 ⁢O 0.96⁢(3) [x = 0.94(6)] was studied using neutron and x-ray diffraction and neutron spectroscopy techniques. The crystal structure of the main phase of our sample, which has come to be colloquially known as LK-99, is verified to possess a hexagonal structure with space group P6 3 /m, alongside the presence of impurity phases Cu and Cu 2 ⁢S. We determine the primary substitution location of the Cu as the Pb1 (6⁢ℎ) site, with a small substitution at the Pb2 (4⁢f) site. Consequently, no clear Cu-doping-induced structural distortion was observed in the investigated temperature region between 10 K and 300 K. Specially, we did not observe a reduction of coordinate number at the Pb2 site or a clear tilting of PO 4 tetrahedron. Magnetic characterization reveals a diamagnetic signal in the specimen, accompanied by a very weak ferromagnetic component at 2 K. No long-range magnetic order down to 10 K was detected by the neutron diffraction. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements did not show magnetic excitations for energies up to 350 meV. There is no sign of a superconducting resonance in the excitation spectrum of this material. The measured phonon density of states compares well with density functional theory calculations performed for the main LK-99 phase and its impurity phases. Our study may shed some insight into the role of the favored substitution site of copper in the absence of structural distortion and superconductivity in LK-99.

Identification of glycosyltransferases mediating 2‐ O ‐arabinopyranosyl and 2‐ O ‐galactosyl substitutions of glucuronosyl side chains of xylan

SUMMARY Xylan is one of the major hemicelluloses in plant cell walls and its xylosyl backbone is often decorated at O ‐2 with glucuronic acid (GlcA) and/or methylglucuronic acid (MeGlcA) residues. The GlcA/MeGlcA side chains may be further substituted with 2‐ O ‐arabinopyranose (Ara p ) or 2‐ O ‐galactopyranose (Gal) residues in some plant species, but the enzymes responsible for these substitutions remain unknown. During our endeavor to investigate the enzymatic activities of Arabidopsis MUR3‐clade members of the GT47 glycosyltransferase family, we found that one of them was able to transfer Ara p from UDP‐Ara p onto O ‐2 of GlcA side chains of xylan, and thus it was named xylan 2‐ O ‐arabinopyranosyltransferase 1 (AtXAPT1). The function of AtXAPT1 was verified in planta by its T‐DNA knockout mutation showing a loss of the Ara p substitution on xylan GlcA side chains. Further biochemical characterization of XAPT close homologs from other plant species demonstrated that while the poplar ones had the same catalytic activity as AtXAPT1, those from Eucalyptus , lemon‐scented gum, sea apple, 'Ohi'a lehua, duckweed and purple yam were capable of catalyzing both 2‐ O ‐Ara p and 2‐ O ‐Gal substitutions of xylan GlcA side chains albeit with differential activities. Sequential reactions with XAPTs and glucuronoxylan methyltransferase 3 (GXM3) showed that XAPTs acted poorly on MeGlcA side chains, whereas GXM3 could efficiently methylate arabinosylated or galactosylated GlcA side chains of xylan. Furthermore, molecular docking and site‐directed mutagenesis analyses of Eucalyptus XAPT1 revealed critical roles of several amino acid residues at the putative active site in its activity. Together, these findings establish that XAPTs residing in the MUR3 clade of family GT47 are responsible for 2‐ O ‐arabinopyranosylation and 2‐ O ‐galactosylation of GlcA side chains of xylan.

The immune-evasive proline-283 substitution in influenza nucleoprotein increases aggregation propensity without altering the native structure

Nucleoprotein (NP) is a key structural protein of influenza ribonucleoprotein complexes and is central to viral RNA packing and trafficking. NP also determines the sensitivity of influenza to myxovirus resistance protein 1 (MxA), an innate immunity factor that restricts influenza replication. A few critical MxA-resistant mutations have been identified in NP, including the highly conserved proline-283 substitution. This essential proline-283 substitution impairs influenza growth, a fitness defect that becomes particularly prominent at febrile temperature (39°C) when host chaperones are depleted. Here, we biophysically characterize proline-283 NP and serine-283 NP to test whether the fitness defect is caused by the proline-283 substitution introducing folding defects. We show that the proline-283 substitution changes the folding pathway of NP, making NP more aggregation prone during folding, but does not alter the native structure of the protein. These findings suggest that influenza has evolved to hijack host chaperones to promote the folding of otherwise biophysically incompetent viral proteins that enable innate immune system escape.

Accelerated microwave-assisted synthesis and in situ X-ray scattering of tungsten-substituted vanadium dioxide (V 1-x W x O 2 )

Vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) has been widely studied due to its metal-insulator phase transition at 68°C, below which it is a semiconducting monoclinic phase, P2 1 /c, and above it is a metallic tetragonal phase, P4 2 /mnm. Substituting vanadium with transition metals allows transition temperature tunability. An accelerated microwave-assisted synthesis for VO 2 and 5d tungsten substituted VO 2 presented herein decreased synthesis time by three orders of magnitude while maintaining phase purity, particle size, and transition character. Tungsten substitution amount was determined using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry, superconducting quantum interference device measurements, and in-situ heating and cooling experiments monitored through synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the transition temperature decreased with increased tungsten substitution. Scanning electron microscopy analyzed through the line-intercept method produced an average particle size of 3 – 5 μm. Average structure and local structure phase purity was determined through Rietveld analysis of synchrotron XRD and least-squares refinement of pair-distribution function data.

Atomic Manipulation of Single Erbium on GaAs(110): From Adatom Motion to Creation and Control of Bistable Substitutions

We demonstrate atomic-scale control over the position and configuration of single erbium (Er) atoms at the GaAs(110) surface using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). By applying voltage pulses from the STM tip, we drive Er adatoms to move sequentially among three distinct adsorption sites and controllably substitute into Ga lattice sites. The resulting substitutional Er atoms exhibit two isoelectronic configurations that differ by less than one angstrom in lateral position and can be reversibly switched by additional voltage pulses. Differential conductance spectroscopy shows differences in the unoccupied local electronic states for the two substitutional configurations, and an absence of mid-gap states. Preliminary density functional theory (DFT) calculations support these findings, identifying the most stable adsorption and substitutional sites, their relative binding energies, charge states, and local density of states (LDOS) characteristics. Together, the experimental and theoretical results establish a method for precise, reversible manipulation of rare-earth dopants at semiconductor surfaces, opening a pathway to engineer atomic-scale quantum and optoelectronic functionalities.

Synthesis and properties of Ti-substituted goethites and hematites

The objective was to synthesize Ti-substituted goethites and hematites and to characterize them using x-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, coulimetry, optical and Mossbauer spectroscopies, and magnetic data in order to determine the evidence of Ti substitution for Martian spectral data. Evidence is provided that up to 4 mole percent can be incorporated into the goethite structure during the low temperature synthesis. Because the spectral data in the visible and near-IR are not sensitive to the degree of Ti-substitution in goethites and hematites, such data cannot be used to infer the presence or absence of Ti substitution in Martian hematites and goethites.

Reaction of YBa2Cu3O(7-beta) with Gold, Silver, Bismuth and Lead: Substitution Chemistry and Composite Fabrication

The reaction of YBa2Cu3O(7-beta) with Au, Ag, Bi, and Ph ions or metal is described. Three types of materials were produced: a well-defined series of homogeneous superconductors was obtained for Au ion substitution with little effect on T(sub c); attempted Ag and Bi ion substitution resulted in multi-phase samples with slightly enhanced T(sub c); finally, attempts to produce superconducting metal/superconducting ceramic composites with Pb and Bi powders resulted in multi-phase samples with drastically diminished superconducting properties. For Au- substituted superconductors, YBa2(Cu(l-x)Au(x))3O(7-beta), a substitution series (x = 0 - 0.1) has been synthesized. For x = 0.1 there was no change in the a and b lattice parameters (a = 3.826 A and b = 3.889 A) but a 0.06 A c axis expansion to 11.75 A was observed. The valence of Cu and Au in YBa2Au(0.3)Cu(2.7)O(7-beta) was investigated using X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES). X-ray studies indicate that Au goes into the Cu(l) site and Cu K edge XANES shows that this has little effect on the oxidation state of the remaining copper. A small effect on T(sub c) is observed (T(sub c) = 89 K for x = 0.10). Ag and Bi addition results in a rise in T(sub c) and a decrease in (delta)T(sub c) at low levels (x = 0.10 Ag, T(sub c) = 94 K and (delta)T(sub c) = 0.5 K; x = 0.02 Bi, T(sub c) = 94 K and (delta)T(sub c) = 1K) relative to typical values for YBa2Cu3O(7-beta) (T(sub c) = 91 K, (delta)T(sub c) = 2 K). Attempts at fabrication of Pb- and Pb(1-x)Bi(x)-superconductor composites are described. Cold pressing followed by low temperature (200 C) sintering resulted in a composite which excluded flux below 90 K but did not show zero electrical resistance until the metal (alloy) superconducting transition. X-ray diffraction showed the presence of pervoskite and metal. Processing at moderate (450 C) or high (950 C) temperatures resulted in oxygen-depleted pervoskite and/or metal oxides. These materials displayed greatly degraded superconducting properties. Processing at 800 C resulted in high T(sub c) only for composites containing greater than 90% weight fraction ceramic. Reaction of metal with YBa2Cu3O(7-beta) formed superconducting lead/bismuth-based oxides and other binary oxides.

Infrared Spectroscopy of Matrix-Isolated Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds and Their Ions: Phenazine, a Dual Substituted Polycyclic Aromatic Nitrogen Heterocycle - 7

The matrix-isolation technique has been employed to measure the mid-infrared spectra of phenazine (C12H8N2), a dual substituted Polycyclic Aromatic Nitrogen Heterocycle (PANH), in the neutral, cationic and anionic forms. The experimentally measured band frequencies and intensities are tabulated and compared with their calculated values as well as those of the non-substituted parent molecule, anthracene. The theoretical band positions and intensities were calculated using both the 3-31 G as well as the larger 6-3lG* Basis Sets. A comparison of the results can be found in the tables. The spectroscopic properties of phenazine and its cation are similar to those observed in mono-substituted PANHs, with one exception. The presence of a second nitrogen atom results in an additional enhancement of the cation's total integrated intensity, for the 1500-1000 cm(sup -1) (6.7 to 10 micron) region, over that observed for a mono-substituted PANH cation. The significance of this enhancement and the astrobiological implications of these results are discussed.

Physical and Biological Properties of Cobalt- and Copper-Doped Calcium Phosphates as Bone Substitute Materials

Arthritis, osteoporosis, and other bone diseases and defects are common medical issues worldwide. By utilizing ceramic biomaterials as bone substitutes to treat these diseases, bone regeneration can be promoted and toxicity from the substitute material can be limited. Calcium phosphate (CaP) ceramics have become popular as bone substitutes due to their biocompatibility and similarity in composition to natural bone. The purpose of this research was to investigate the physical properties and biological responses of CaP-based bone substitutes, doped with metal ions. Some metal ions are present in natural bone in small amounts, and recent studies show they affect the biological responses of CaPs significantly. Dopants such as magnesium (Mg), strontium (Sr), silicon (Si) and iron (Fe) alter the phase composition, mechanical properties, osteogenesis and angiogenesis properties of CaPs, depending on their concentration and method of addition. In the present study, the effects of cobalt (Co) and copper (Cu) on the physical and biological properties of two main CaP materials, brushite cement (BrC) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP), have been investigated. Different concentrations of dopants in forms of oxide and/or chloride were selected and their effect on phase composition, sintering behavior, density, setting time, compressive strength and in vitro interaction with osteosarcoma and osteoblast cells were studied. Different techniques of sample preparation, challenges during cement preparation and compact sample pressing, sintering, and methods of dopant addition are discussed. The presence of Cu in tricalcium phosphate was found to increase thermal stability of the material and decrease the impact of sintering temperature on porosity. In addition, Cu caused a reduction in expression of inflammatory gene markers by human osteoblast cells and an increased expression at early time points due of osteoinductive markers. The addition of Cu and Co to brushite cement caused an increase in thermal stability of the material, and the addition of Cu caused significant increase in setting time. Small dopant amounts of Co caused decrease in setting time, but higher amounts caused an increase. In addition, Cu dopant in small amounts resulted in an increase of compressive strength. Both Cu and Co led to a decrease in expression of inflammatory gene markers by osteoblast and osteosarcoma cells respectively, and Cu also caused an increase in osteoinductive marker expression. Thus, these results indicate that Cu and Co have a positive impact on the physical, mechanical and biological properties of calcium phosphate biomaterials.

A versatile enhanced freeze-substitution protocol for volume electron microscopy

Volume electron microscopy, a powerful approach to generate large three-dimensional cell and tissue volumes at electron microscopy resolutions, is rapidly becoming a routine tool for understanding fundamental and applied biological questions. One of the enabling factors for its adoption has been the development of conventional fixation protocols with improved heavy metal staining. However, freeze-substitution with organic solvent-based fixation and staining has not realized the same level of benefit. Here, we report a straightforward approach including osmium tetroxide, acetone and up to 3% water substitution fluid (compatible with traditional or fast freeze-substitution protocols), warm-up and transition from organic solvent to aqueous 2% osmium tetroxide. Once fully hydrated, samples were processed in aqueous based potassium ferrocyanide, thiocarbohydrazide, osmium tetroxide, uranyl acetate and lead acetate before resin infiltration and polymerization. We observed a consistent and substantial increase in heavy metal staining across diverse and difficult-to-fix test organisms and tissue types, including plant tissues ( Hordeum vulgare ), nematode ( Caenorhabditis elegans ) and yeast ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae ). Our approach opens new possibilities to combine the benefits of cryo-preservation with enhanced contrast for volume electron microscopy in diverse organisms.

Structural Stabilization of P2-type Sodium Iron Manganese Oxides by Electrochemically Inactive Mg Substitution: Insights of Redox Behavior and Voltage Decay

Layered P2-type Na 0.8 Mn 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 2 cathode material is a promising candidate for next-generation sodium-ion batteries due to the economical and environmentally benign characteristics of Mn and Fe. The poor cycling stability of the material, however, is still a problem that must be solved. To address the problem, here, electrochemically inactive Mg 2+ was introduced into the structure by substituting some of the Fe ions. It was shown that Mg substitution led to a smoother voltage profile with improved cycling performance and rate capability. These observations were attributed to the suppressed structural changes during electrochemical processes. Detailed redox mechanisms, associated local structural changes, and phase transitions were investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. From the detailed analysis of electrochemical behaviors, it was also identified how the redox reactions and structural disordering occurred in the high-and low-voltage regions and how Mg substitution stabilized the structure.

Magnetism and structure of Fe- and Co-substituted Mn 2 NiSn

Mn-containing Heuslers are important magnetic shape-memory alloys for fast and precise actuators in manufacturing, robotics, surgery, and other applications. Among the key requirements are a high magnetization and favorable thermal properties, especially a high Curie temperature. In this work, the effect of Fe and Co substitution on the structure and magnetism of Mn 2 NiSn alloys is investigated. The Heusler alloys have been produced by melt spinning and characterized by X-ray diffraction, magnetometry, and electron-transport measurements. It was found that Co substitution for Mn enhances the Curie temperature of Mn 2 NiSn and both Co and Fe substitution improve its magnetization. Further, these improvements are accompanied by reduced thermal and magnetic hysteresis losses and by interesting structural changes, namely improved chemical order and site occupancies characteristic of quaternary (Y-ordered) Heuslers.

Adsorption Mechanisms of Glyphosate on Ferrihydrite: Effects of Al Substitution and Aggregation State

Ferrihydrite is one of the most reactive iron (Fe) (oxyhydr)oxides in soils, but the adsorption mechanisms of glyphosate, the most widely used herbicide, on ferrihydrite remain unknown. Here, we determined the adsorption mechanisms of glyphosate on pristine and Al-substituted ferrihydrites with aggregated and dispersed states using macroscopic adsorption experiments, zeta potential, phosphorus K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy, in situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy coupled with two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy, and multivariate curve resolution analyses. Aggregation of ferrihydrite decreases the glyphosate adsorption capacity. The partial substitution of Al in ferrihydrite inhibits glyphosate adsorption on aggregated ferrihydrite due to the decrease of external specific surface area, while it promotes glyphosate adsorption on dispersed ferrihydrite, which is ascribed to the increase of surface positive charge. Glyphosate predominately forms protonated and deprotonated, depending on the sorption pH, monodentate-mononuclear complexes (MMH 1 /MMH 0 , 77-90%) on ferrihydrites, besides minor deprotonated bidentate-binuclear complexes (BBH 0 , 23-10%). Both Al incorporation and a low pH favor the formation of the BB complex. The adsorbed glyphosate preferentially forms the MM complex on ferrihydrite and preferentially bonds with the Al-OH sites on Al-substituted ferrihydrite. In conclusion, these new insights are expected to be useful in predicting the environmental fate of glyphosate in ferrihydrite-rich environments.

Facet Preferencing by Chemical Substitution Controls Semi-Hydrogenation Selectivity in Ternary Pyrite-Type Intermetallic Compounds

Intermetallic compounds serve as model catalysts for selective hydrogenation reactions, offering precise control over the active site composition(s), geometric and electronic structure. The addition of a third element to form a ternary intermetallic alters the exposed crystal facet(s), demonstrating a strategy to impart improved catalytic behavior in intermetallic catalysts. The site-specific substitution of a small fraction of Pd atoms with Au in pyrite-type PdSb 2 results in the preferential exposure of the (100) facet over the (111) facet. Electron back scattered diffraction and density functional theory calculations confirm the facet change upon the substitution of Pd with Au to form the ternary Pd 1−x Au x Sb 2 (0.075 ≤ x ≤ 0.25). The (100) facet demonstrates higher net alkene selectivity due to significantly weaker alkene binding compared to the (111) facet. Distinct from our prior work on chemical substitution to directly alter the active site composition, this work demonstrates the indirect modification of active sites via preferential facet exposure.

Structural Assessment of Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine, and Hydroxide Substitutions in Lead Arsenate Apatites (Mimetites)–Pb 5 (AsO 4 ) 3 X

Five lead-arsenate apatites (mimetites)-Pb 5 (AsO 4 ) 3 X—where X denotes fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), and hydroxide (OH)—were synthesized via precipitation from aqueous solutions. The crystal structures were determined through Rietveld refinement of powder synchrotron X-ray data. All the compounds crystallized in the hexagonal class symmetry (space group P6 3 /m). The Rietveld refinement indicated that mimetite-Cl, -Br, -I, and -OH had an anion deficiency at position X. Substitution of halogens in a mimetite structure brought about systematic changes in unit-cell parameters, interatomic distances, and metaprism twist angles φ, proportional to the substituted halogen’s ionic radius. Mimetite-OH did not follow the linear correlations determined within the series. Twist angle φ, a useful device for monitoring changes in apatite topology, ranged from 20.34° for mimetite-F to 11.42° for mimetite-I. The geometric method has been proposed for determining the diameter of hexagonal channels hosting halogens in apatites. A comparison of the results with halogenated pyromorphites showed similar systematic trends: the substitutions in mimetites have comparable effect on the interatomic distances as in their phosphorous analogues.

Radicals as Exceptional Electron-Withdrawing Groups: Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution of Halophenols Via Homolysis-Enabled Electronic Activation

While heteroatom-centered radicals are understood to be highly electrophilic, their ability to serve as transient electron-withdrawing groups and facilitate polar reactions at distal sites has not been extensively developed. Here, we report a new strategy for the electronic activation of halophenols, wherein generation of a phenoxyl radical via formal homolysis of the aryl O-H bond enables direct nucleophilic aromatic substitution of the halide with carboxylate nucleophiles under mild conditions. Pulse radiolysis and transient absorption studies reveal that the neutral oxygen radical (O • ) is indeed an extraor-dinarily strong electron-withdrawing group [σ p - (O • ) = 2.79 vs. σ p - (NO 2 ) = 1.27]. Additional mechanistic and computational studies indicate that the key phenoxyl intermediate serves as an open-shell electron-withdrawing group in these reactions, lowering the barrier for nucleophilic substitution by more than 20 kcal/mol relative to the closed-shell phenol form of the substrate. Finally, by using radicals as transient activating groups, this homolysis-enabled electronic activation strategy provides a powerful platform to expand the scope of nucleophile-electrophile couplings and enable previously challenging transformations.

Asymmetric Alkoxy and Alkyl Substitution on Nonfullerene Acceptors Enabling High‐Performance Organic Solar Cells

Abstract In this paper, a strategy of asymmetric alkyl and alkoxy substitution is applied to state‐of‐the‐art Y‐series nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs), and it achieves great performance in organic solar cell (OSC) devices. Since alkoxy groups can have a significant influence on the material properties of NFAs, alkoxy substitution is applied to the Y6 molecule in a symmetric manner. The resulting molecule (named Y6‐2O), despite showing improved open‐circuit voltage ( V oc ), yields extremely poor performance due to low solubility and excessive aggregation properties, a change that is due to the conformational locking effect of alkoxy groups. In contrast, asymmetric alkyl and alkoxy substitution on Y6, yields a molecule named Y6‐1O that can maintain the positive effect of V oc improvement and obtain reasonably good solubility. The resulting molecule Y6‐1O enables highly efficient nonfullerene OSCs with 17.6% efficiency and the asymmetric side‐chain strategy has the potential to be applied to other NFA‐material systems to further improve their performance.
