Tunable 1D and 2D Polyacrylonitrile Nanosheet Superstructures

Carbon superstructures are widely applied in energy and environment-related areas. Among them, the flower-like polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-derived carbon materials have shown great promise due to their high surface area, large pore volume, and improved mass transport. In this work, we report a versatile and straightforward method for synthesizing one-dimensional (1D) nanostructured fibers and two-dimensional (2D) nanostructured thin films based on flower-like PAN chemistry by taking advantage of the nucleation and growth behavior of PAN. The resulting nanofibers and thin films exhibited distinct morphologies with intersecting PAN nanosheets, which formed through rapid nucleation on existing PAN. We further constructed a variety of hierarchical PAN superstructures based on different templates, solvents, and concentrations. These PAN nanosheet superstructures can be readily converted to carbon superstructures. As a demonstration, the nanostructured thin film exhibited a contact angle of ~180° after surface modification with fluoroalkyl monolayers, which is attributed to high surface roughness enabled by the nanosheet assemblies. In conclusion, this study offers a strategy for the synthesis of nanostructured carbon materials for various applications.

Analytical model for drag reduction on liquid-infused structured non-wetting surfaces

Liquid-infused structured non-wetting surfaces provide alternating no-slip and partial slip boundary conditions to the fluid flow, resulting in reduced friction at the interface. In this paper, an analytical model is developed for the evaluation of effective slip and, in turn, friction factor and drag reduction on liquid-infused structured non-wetting surfaces. By considering the entire range of anisotropy and heterogeneity of the surface structures as well as the full range of partial slip offered by the infusion liquid, the present model eliminates empirical fitting or correlations that are inherent in previous studies. Based on the effective slip length, drag reduction and skin friction coefficient values for Newtonian flow between two infinite parallel plates and flow in round tubes are presented. Extension of Moody charts for non-wetting surfaces and design maps of surface meso/micro/nano texturing for achieving desired drag reduction are presented for a broad range of engineering applications. The paper further presents independent validation of the model across experimental and computational data from the literature and brings together several previous studies in a unified manner.

Simple, Tough, and Effective Porous Coating for Anti-Corrosion Application

This presentation discusses how a change in polymeric binder, the material used for assembling hydrophobic nanoparticles into a porous structure, led to better mechanical toughness and a simpler fabrication process based on 100% commercially available components. Most importantly, the optimized porous coating can reduce the corrosion rate by two orders of magnitude (0.003 mm/year) due to higher diffusion barrier based on a more resistant tortuous diffusion path. The combination of simplicity, toughness, effectiveness, and scalability greatly enhanced the prospect of commercializing this technology as an internal anti-corrosion coating for natural gas pipelines.
