Burnishing a molydisulfide coating into the thread surfaces of fasteners eliminates the need for binders and vehicles which ensure coverage and retention of the lubricant during fastening. The coating may be applied by any convenient method.
Threaded split ring connector quickly and cleanly separates two structural members by remote control. The connector is retained in an expanded position by spring plates that are deflected and held by an explosive bolt. Ignition of the bolt effects the separation. This conceptual approach lends itself to various configurations and sizes of structures.
Threaded fasteners used in corrosive environments are plated with electroless nickel and electroplated, over the nickel, with tin. This provides a corrosion-resistant coating for the fasteners.

TAPDIE, a generalized macro written for the APT numerical control system, cuts threads in stock too big for conventional machines or for which conventional methods are unsuitable. TAPDIE computes the machine tool path necessary and the information is passed on to a post-processor which produces a control tape.
Buttress thread with steep taper connects two molded plastic cylinders without changing wall thickness or sacrificing longitudinal strength at the juncture. Technique lends itself to conventional molding methods.
Proper installation techniques are described and reliable torque-tension values are presented on joint preload /or clamp load/ properties of structural threaded fasteners.
MSFC-STD-486, Threaded Fasteners, Torque Limits For, is a relatively new standard that has not had much user experience. This test was run to provide such experience and verify the values in MSFC-STD-486. This was accomplished by plotting torque-tension curves on aluminum and alloy steel aircraft quality bolts and nuts through 1/2 inch in diameter.
Description of two axial alignment fixtures that are capable of providing very low load application eccentricity in tension tests of threaded notched cylindrical specimens. The described fixtures are simple in design, very compact, and free from the effects of friction. Also, an evaluation procedure is presented that can be used to qualify any fixture for use in sharp notch tensile tests.
Joint is self-aligning and tightens with only sixty-five degrees of rotation for quick connects and disconnects. Made of injection-molded plastics or cast or machined aluminum, joint can carry wires, tubes, liquids, or gases. When two parts of joint are brought together, their shapes align them. Small projections on male section and slots on female section further aid alignment; slight rotation of male form engages projections in slots. At this point, threads engage and male section is rotated until joint is fully engaged.
The author has identified the following significant results. The relationship between the distribution of menhaden and selected oceanographic parameters (water color, turbidity, and possibly chlorophyll concentrations) was established. Similar relationships for thread herring were not established nor were relationships relating to the abundance of either species. Use of aircraft and LANDSAT remote sensing instruments to measure or infer a set of basic oceanographic parameters was evaluated. Parameters which could be accurately inferred included surface water temperature, salinity, and color. Water turbidity (Secchi disk) was evaluated as marginally inferrable from the LANDSAT MSS data and chlorophyll-a concentrations as less than marginal. These evaluations considered the parameters only as experienced in the two test areas using available sensors and statistical techniques.
The measurements revealed that at low Reynolds numbers the profile loss is considerably reduced both by the increased degree of turbulence and by a turbulence thread, while it is somewhat increased at high Reynolds numbers, and that a profile loss reduction is connected with an increase in deflection and in pressure shift. The turbulence generator is most effective on the one hand in the middle of the operating range of the cascades, and on the other at very high Mach numbers together with a large angle of incidence.
Two theoretical problems are presented to illustrate the equilibrium structure of a gravitating gas threaded by magnetic fields. The gas is heated everywhere at a rate proportional to the local density and cooled by thermal conduction channeled along the magnetic field. Emphasis is placed on the influence of anisotropic thermal conduction on the distribution of the gas. In the first problem, the magnetic field has straight field lines that are nearly parallel. The simple field line geometry allows us to calculate, in closed form, the equilibria configurations of a gas slab which is cooled nonuniformly by thermal conduction along field lines which leave the gas slab at varying angles. The problem involves the gas having a free boundary, which is one of the unknowns to be determined. A discussion is given of the set of all possible equilibria so constructed. In the second problem there is no electric current flowing in the gas but there is a potential magnetic field having curved field lines. Exact solutions of equilibriums are presented to illustrate the heating of stellar and galactic coronas.
Tool for measuring threaded depth of tapped holes accurate and easy to use. Depth read from graduated scale on tool. Gives direct reading of depth, eliminating estimates and calculations. When tool is removed from hole, spring-loaded sleeve returns to zero.
The effects of chemical, mechanical, and thermal processing treatments on the preflight strength properties of a silica sewing thread used to fabricate an external flexible Thermal Protection System (TPS) for the Space Shuttle vehicle are discussed. Below 540 C, loss of strength was observed for all treatments studied, but above conditioning temperatures of 540 C little change in strength properties was measured, indicating no appreciable mechanical damage to the yarn as a consequence of these processing treatments.
