Toroidal injection angle dependence of EC assisted plasma initiation at DIII-D

An experimental scan of the electron cyclotron waves (EC) toroidal injection angle in plasma breakdown is performed at the DIII-D tokamak. The second harmonic, extraordinary mode EC is used for the study. The dependence of n e and T e on the EC injection angle cannot be conclusively drawn from this study due to the large error bars in the n e and T e measurements. On the other hand, high T e data points are observed in some discharges which can be explained by nonlinear heating. The D α emission measurement shows a clear relation between the breakdown time and the injection angle. An experimental investigation of the cause of the dependence of breakdown delay on the EC injection angle suggests that when the injection angle is oblique, the EC heating after the reflection at the inboard wall may become ineffective and cause the breakdown delay even when the EC heating before and directly upon injection remains effective. A preliminary run of the heat and transport balance code DYON indicates that the obtained dataset is suitable for a quantitative validation of EC absorption models.

Counter-propagating toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes in tokamaks

Mechanisms of destabilization of toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) in tokamaks are analyzed with the aim to reveal those leading to modes propagating in the direction opposite to plasma current, i.e. counter-propagating modes (ctr-TAE). Plasmas with fast-ions sources [such as neutral beam injection (NBI), ion cyclotron resonance heating, fusion reactions] and without them (Ohmic discharges) are considered. A particular NSTX-U experiment with NBI, where co- and counter-propagating TAEs were observed simultaneously (Podestà et al 2018 Nucl. Fusion 58 082023), is considered. It is concluded that both types of TAEs occurred because their destabilization was caused by the velocity anisotropy of beam ions, which overrode effects of spatial inhomogeneity of these ions.

Toroid Signal Processing Container with Redis Integration

This report presents the research, design, and implementation of a Toroid Signal Processing Container with Redis Integration, conducted during my internship assignment. The project focused on developing a modular signal processing sys- tem capable of performing baseline correction, droop compensation, and real- time data communication for beam diagnostic signals. Using Redis as a message broker and configuration manager, the system ensures modularity, scalability, and efficient inter-process communication. Signal correction algorithms, such as Asymmetric Least Squares (ALS) baseline smoothing and a numerical droop correction approach, were implemented and tested using Linac beam data. The results confirm that this system improves signal fidelity and supports real-time analysis requirements, offering valuable contributions to the field of beam instrumentation and data acquisition systems.

Improved magnetometer uses toroidal gating coil

Improved magnetometer employs a cylindrical, high permeability magnetic core with a toroidal gating coil and a solenoid pickup coil. Flux interaction can be reduced by electrostatically shielding the pickup coil from the gating coil. The magnetometer principle can be applied to navigation devices.

Toroidal mirrors provide virtual walls for breaks in light pipes

Section of light pipe consists of separated segments having opposed toroidal mirrors that intercept meridional rays to present virtual wall in space between mirrors, thus insuring uninterrupted light transmission down the pipe. Design affords internal access to pipe section. Segments are electrically or thermally insulated from one another.
