Square patterns and secondary instabilities in driven capillary waves

Amplitude equations (including nonlinear damping terms) are derived which describe the evolution of patterns in large-aspect-ratio driven capillary wave experiments. For drive strength just above threshold, a reduction of the number of marginal modes (from traveling capillary waves to standing waves) leads to simpler amplitude equations, which have a Lyapunov functional. This functional determines the wavenumber and symmetry (square) of the most stable uniform state. The original amplitude equations, however, have a secondary instability to transverse amplitude modulation (TAM), which is not present in the standing-wave equations. The TAM instability announces the restoration of the full set of marginal modes.

Effect of wind tunnel acoustic modes on linear oscillating cascade aerodynamics

The aerodynamics of a biconvex airfoil cascade oscillating in torsion is investigated using the unsteady aerodynamic influence coefficient technique. For subsonic flow and reduced frequencies as large as 0.9, airfoil surface unsteady pressures resulting from oscillation of one of the airfoils are measured using flush-mounted high-frequency-response pressure transducers. The influence coefficient data are examined in detail and then used to predict the unsteady aerodynamics of a cascade oscillating at various interblade phase angles. These results are correlated with experimental data obtained in the traveling-wave mode of oscillation and linearized analysis predictions. It is found that the unsteady pressure disturbances created by an oscillating airfoil excite wind tunnel acoustic modes which have detrimental effects on the experimental data. Acoustic treatment is proposed to rectify this problem.

Geospatial Analysis of Built Infrastructure and Modeled Household Driving Patterns

The level of access to opportunities for a location can be quantified in the amount of time it takes to travel from a departure point to the destinations that somebody would want or need to visit. Isochrone maps are geometric representations of the area accessible from a departure point within a set amount of time. Informed in part by the National Household Travel Survey, this report merges location data for amenities and opportunities across six frequent destination categories – employment, education, health, food, community, and transportation – with isochrone maps generated by the TravelTime API, whose departure points are census tract population-weighted centroids. Using a “Points-In-Polygon” analysis, destinations that fall within a census tract’s isochrone are tallied as accessible from the region within one of three time thresholds: 15-, 30-, and 45-minutes by the walking, cycling, public transit, and driving modes of travel. We find that access to a high number of jobs within a typical commute duration is negatively correlated with annual household vehicle miles traveled (VMT). The spatial distribution of our data suggests that the high household VMT frequently seen surrounding the edges of major cities may be related to worker commutes into the city core, and that the high household VMT frequently seen in rural tracts may be related to the longer travel distances required to access a variety of key opportunities from these areas.

Behavior, Energy, Autonomy, Mobility Modeling Framework (BEAM) v1.0

The Behavior, Energy, Autonomy, and Mobility (BEAM) model is an integrated, agent-based travel demand simulation framework. Individual agents express preferences through a utility- maximizing evolutionary algorithm that minimizes each individual’s cost and time spent traveling via diverse modal options, including the competition for scarce supply resources such as parking spaces and charging infrastructure. BEAM simulates the essential elements that compose a dynamic transportation system. From the road network, parking and charging infrastructure, to the transit system and a synthetic population with plans and preferences, the virtual system is an amalgamation of multiple spatially resolved layers that together represent an integrated transportation system. BEAM is an extension to the MATSim (Multi-Agent Transportation Simulation) model, where agents employ reinforcement learning across successive simulated days to maximize their personal utility through plan mutation (exploration) and selecting between previously executed plans (exploitation). The BEAM model shifts some of the behavioral emphasis in MATSim from across-day planning to within- day planning, where agents dynamically respond to the state of the system during the mobility simulation. In BEAM, agents can plan across all major modes of travel including driving, walking, biking, transit, and demand-responsive ride hailing. It is designed to integrate with other open source transportation models, such as ActivitySim.

Waveform analysis of a large-area superconducting nanowire single photon detector

Superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs) are typically used as single-mode-fiber-coupled single-pixel detectors, but large area detectors are increasingly critical for applications ranging from microscopy to free-space quantum communications. However, the long meander-line length of such large-area SNSPDs results in a proportionately large kinetic inductance that affects the waveform generated by the device. Here, we explore changes in the rising edge of the readout pulse for a single-pixel large-area SNSPD as a function of the optical spot size on the detector and compare to the rising edge of the dark-count waveform. We observe a bimodal distribution of bright-count rise times and show that the probability of a slow rise time increases in the limit of large spot sizes, indicative of a position sensitive response. Additionally, in the limit of low bias currents, the dark-count readout pulse is most similar to the large spot-size bright-count readout pulse, which suggests that dark counts arise from locations spanning the device. Overall, these results are consistent with a simple model of traveling microwave modes excited by single photons incident at varying positions along the length of the nanowire.
