The Plum Island Estuary (PIE) in Massachusetts is New England’s largest salt marsh. This dynamic ecosystem plays an important role in the surrounding communities by providing ecosystem and social services, acting as a center for education, research, and recreation. However, marshes around the world are threatened by sea level rise. As the equilibrium between sediment supply, erosion rates, and vegetation growth is unbalanced by rising waters, marshes are liable to recede, or even drown. Because sediment is so crucial, researchers use sediment budgets as a metric to assess Plum Island Estuary’s vulnerability to rising seas; however, established data collection methods are limited in scope. The project employed five years of imagery from Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) and three years of imagery from Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI), in conjunction with in situ data, to generate and refine a local algorithm that derives suspended sediment concentration from remote sensing reflectance. This information was applied to a flux model to analyze transport patterns and possible sediment sources, particularly the Merrimack River. The use of remote sensing techniques will provide our partners at the US Geological Survey, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and Plum Island Ecosystems Long Term Ecological Research Network with higher spatial and temporal resolution data, which will allow for the development of more effective management practices.

Implementing Admittance Relaying for Microgrid Protection

An earlier study evaluated issues with microgrid protection. This highlighted the difficulties with microgrid protection, which include: 1. lack of fault current from inverter-interfaced generation, 2. varying fault current between grid-connected and islanded modes, 3. potential for normally-meshed operation and 4. unbalanced operation due to single-phase loads. It is worth noting that not all microgrid designs will include all these challenges. For example, microgrids could choose to omit meshed operation. Previous work identified differential protection based on the discrete S-transform for line protection and admittance protection for load protection as possible solutions . However, some severe limitations were identified. This included the potential for blinding of the discrete S-transform protection when fault contribution on either end of the line is similar, and loss of protection selectivity for admittance protection in the case of upstream line-ground faults. This report investigates admittance protection as a solution for line and load protection in greater detail by comparing analytical and simulated results. Section 2 describes the protection schemes analyzed and the behavior of inverter-interfaced microgrids under faults in more detail. Section 3 derives sequence networks for the fault cases considered. Section 4 presents a transient model constructed to validate the impedances calculated from the sequence networks. Section 5 compares the results from the sequence networks and transient model. Last, Section 6 presents the conclusions of this study in terms of the suitability of admittance relaying for protection of inverter-interfaced microgrids.

Adaptive Linear State Estimation for Unbalanced Distribution System

The inclusion of PMU functionality in distribution relays enables the implementation of a linear state estimator (LSE) in Distribution Systems (DS). However, the unbalanced topology and phase coupling in distribution lines necessitate modifications to the LSE formulation. Additionally, the higher fault frequency in distribution systems requires a state estimation approach that is resilient to contingencies. This work proposes an adaptive linear state estimation algorithm tailored for unbalanced distribution systems with single-phase and two-phase laterals. Furthermore, a modified Optimal PMU Placement (OPP) strategy is introduced to ensure full observability in distribution systems with single-phase and two-phase buses. To maintain adaptability to topology changes, the state estimator incorporates circuit breaker status data provided by PMUs, ensuring robust performance during topology changes triggered by faults. The performance of the algorithm is verified on the IEEE 13-bus, 34-bus, and 123-bus systems.

Machine Learning-Assisted Stability Boundary Determination of Multiport Autonomous Reconfigurable Solar Power Plants

The multiport autonomous reconfigurable solar (MARS) power plant is a promising solution to integrate renewable resources and energy storage systems into the alternating current (ac) power grid and an high-voltage direct current (HVdc) link. In the MARS system, various input power sources are connected to the individual submodules (SMs) through direct current (dc)–dc converters. However, the presence of external power sources can result in unbalanced capacitor voltages of SMs, thereby violating stability constraints under multiple/diverse operating conditions. This article aims to address the gap by accurately determining the stability boundary of the MARS system. As such, a novel machine learning (ML)-assisted energy balancing control (EBC) criterion is proposed. Further, in conjunction with a refined EBC, this approach ensures balanced capacitor voltages across various types of SMs, significantly enhancing the overall system efficiency. The proposed EBC criterion effectively controls EBC activation and deactivation, achieving remarkable accuracy. Both power systems computer aided design (PSCAD)/electromagnetic transients including direct current (EMTDC) simulations and control hardware-in-the-loop (cHIL) tests are conducted to validate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed method. By combining the EBC and ML-assisted EBC criterion, efficient energy management is achieved for systems featuring multiple input power sources, such as MARS. This approach enables the system to fully exploit its potential across an expanded operational range while upholding high-efficiency standards.
