In-Can Incineration and Vitrification Process for the Treatment of Transuranic Wastes - 20035

Technological alpha contaminated wastes are produced by the nuclear fuel cycle management industry, essentially from MOX fuel production units. These Plutonium Contaminated Materials (PCM) contain a mixture of organic, metal and mineral materials, contaminated with uranium, plutonium and americium. One treatment scenario under study is to incinerate the organic materials, melt the metallic fraction and incorporate the mineral fraction (including ashes from organics incineration) into a glass matrix without sorting or pretreatment (grinding for instance). A scale 1 pilot of this PIVIC process (Process for Incineration and Vitrification In Can) has been commissioned in 2018 at the CEA R and D vitrification facility in Marcoule site. A R and D program aiming to demonstrate the feasibility of this process is currently on going. This paper starts with a description of PIVIC process with explanation of the technologies involved. Then, main results of the first year of operation with the technological demonstration goal are presented. (authors)

Uranium Solubility and Supernate Enrichment Testing for Accelerated Basin De-Inventory Discards to Concentration, Storage, and Transfer Facilities

After future Accelerated Basin De-inventory (ABD) enriched uranium discards into sludge batches (SB), portions of supernate decants during SB preparation will be blended into salt batches (StB) and the resulting feeds must meet the nuclear safety requirements for the Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF). During previous SB10 sampling and testing, which involved H-Canyon material containing enriched uranium being mixed with Tank 51 sludge shortly after the H-Canyon stream was neutralized, it was identified that the uranium isotopic enrichment in the supernate deviated from the uranium isotopic enrichment in the slurry. The higher uranium isotopic enrichment in the supernate introduced the risk of challenging the feed requirements of SWPF. The ABD material added to SB11 was isotopically diluted with depleted uranium, mitigating any downstream impacts. However, H-Canyon desires to eliminate or minimize future depleted uranium additions in order to meet the mission schedule.

Piezomagnetic switching and complex phase equilibria in uranium dioxide

Abstract Actinide materials exhibit strong spin–lattice coupling and electronic correlations, and are predicted to host new emerging ground states. One example is piezomagnetism and magneto-elastic memory effect in the antiferromagnetic Mott-Hubbard insulator uranium dioxide, though its microscopic nature is under debate. Here, we report X-ray diffraction studies of oriented uranium dioxide crystals under strong pulsed magnetic fields. In the antiferromagnetic state a [888] Bragg diffraction peak follows the bulk magnetostriction that expands under magnetic fields. Upon reversal of the field the expansion turns to contraction, before the [888] peak follows the switching effect and piezomagnetic ‘butterfly’ behaviour, characteristic of two structures connected by time reversal symmetry. An unexpected splitting of the [888] peak is observed, indicating the simultaneous presence of time-reversed domains of the 3-k structure and a complex magnetic-field-induced evolution of the microstructure. These findings open the door for a microscopic understanding of the piezomagnetism and magnetic coupling across strong magneto-elastic interactions.

Rapid 235 U/ 238 U determination by matrix assisted ionization–time-of-flight mass spectrometry

Matrix-assisted ionization (MAI) of inorganic analytes is a nascent research domain that holds promise for rapid, potentially facility-deployable analytical applications. Here, we present results of MAI uranium isotopic analysis ( 235 U/ 238 U) obtained on the timescale of minutes utilizing simple sample preparation and an ambient ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (ToF MS). Experimental MAI-ToF MS characterization of uranium Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) was used to establish method calibration and validate quantitative 235 U/ 238 U determination spanning depleted, natural, and low-enriched uranium isotopic compositions. Secondary standard analyses with total uranium mass loadings of 5–500 ng per analysis yield accurate calibrated 235 U/ 238 U results and relative uncertainties of 4.7–17.2% (approx. ±95% confidence level), with weighted-mean uncertainties approaching 1.5%. This method permits accurate determination of uranium isotopic composition in a sample with uranium content as low as 200 pg for equal atom 235 U: 238 U. Instrument detection limits constrain the minimum uranium mass required to identify the presence of highly enriched uranium (HEU ≥20% 235 U) as only 500 pg using the method presented here. MAI-ToF MS quantitation of relatively extreme isotope ratios ( 235 U/ 238 U ≤ 0.01) is limited by detection of minor 235 U (LoD 100 pg 235 U/analysis ≈ 10 ng total U/analysis), and subsequent method optimization is anticipated to further reduce these limits. These findings underscore the potential of MAI-ToF MS for isotopic characterization of uranium and other inorganic species for both basic and applied science.

Cell design for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy measurements on reactive gas samples

Uranium hexafluoride (UF 6 ) is the primary material used for the enrichment of uranium in the production of light water nuclear reactor fuels worldwide. Accurate, rapid quantification of uranium isotopic composition in nuclear materials is required for safeguards programs and nonproliferation purposes. One potential technique for isotopic measurements in uranium species in the field is laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Safe and effective application of LIBS to UF 6 for enrichment measurements is uniquely challenging due to the chemical and physical properties of UF 6 , which necessitate specific handling procedures. The objective of this work is to design a cell for isotopic analysis of UF 6 that is (1) compatible with chemical and physical properties of UF 6 , (2) compatible with LIBS laser, and (3) portable-sized for nuclear safeguards applications. Along with cell design, initial testing of the cell for basic performance and chemical compatibility is performed. As designed and constructed, the portable gas cell was gas-tight, chemically compatible with UF 6 , and withstood long-duration laser exposure. In this work, the cell has proven capability for handling reactive gasses, such as UF 6 , with specification application to isotopic analysis.

Impact of Nd ions on the chemical kinetic behavior of radiolytic transients in molten LiCl-KCl-NdCl3 salt mixtures

Pyrochemical reprocessing technologies can be used to recover valuable materials from used nuclear fuel (UNF), such as uranium. However, other critical materials, such as fission product neodymium, are challenging to recover from molten chloride eutectic mixtures (LiCl-KCl) due to the presence of multivalent states (Nd2+/Nd3+), disproportionation reactions, and re-dissolution in the molten chloride salt. Understanding, predicting, and controlling these processes is further complicated by the presence of ionizing radiation fields, for which little is known on the interaction of neodymium ions with the radiolytic transients (es– and Cl2.–) in molten LiCl-KCl salt mixtures. Here, chemical kinetics, from integrated electron pulse irradiation and transient absorption spectroscopy, are presented for the reaction of Nd3+ ions with es– and Cl2.– as a function of temperature (400–600 ?).

Interlaboratory comparison of secondary ion mass spectrometry analysis results from the 7th international technical nuclear forensics working group collaborative material exercise

A review and interlaboratory comparison of secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) data obtained by laboratories participating in the International Technical Nuclear Forensics Working Group (ITWG) 7th Collaborative Material Exercise (CMX-7) has been conducted. The analyzed materials were two uranium compounds in powder form and two pieces of uranium metal. The instruments used in this comparison were a small-geometry (SG) SIMS, CAMECA IMS 7f from the Research Centre Rez, and a large-geometry (LG) SIMS, CAMECA IMS 1280 from Los Alamos National Laboratory. Despite the differences in instruments and analytical procedures, e.g., sample preparation, SIMS setups, and data post-processing, there was good agreement for the 234 U/ 238 U, 235 U/ 238 U, and 236 U/ 238 U ratios in the analyzed materials. The main difference was in the precision, which was, as expected, higher for the LG-SIMS. In addition, a comparison between the laboratories was also made for the image processing algorithms applied to raw data acquired in automated particle measurement (APM) mode. In conclusion, the result of this comparison has led to identification of best practices for setting up parameters of the APM software.

Sandwiched Kagomé Lattices in a Coordination Polymer Based on Mixed-Valent Uranium

The metal–organic material U V O(U VI O 2 ) 2 (OH) 5 (Triaz) 2 (Triaz = 1,2,4-triazolate) has been isolated from the reaction of UO 2 (NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O with 1,2,4-triazole in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([C 2 mim][OAc]). The compound’s crystal structure is comprised of planar inorganic layers interconnected by organic linkers into a 3D framework. These layers represent a uranium-based coordination polymer with a Kagomé topology that to the best of our knowledge has never been recognized in f-element coordination chemistry.

Model ages of three uranium metal CRMs and implications for radiochronometry data interpretation

In this study, we report 230 Th/ 234 U and 231 Pa/ 235 U model ages in three uranium metal certified reference materials with distinct production histories and isotopic compositions ranging from depleted to highly enriched (CRMs 112-A, 115, and 116-A). Here, our results provide the first model age values for these materials using multiple radiochronometers, which can be used as reference values for quality control of radiochronometry measurements performed during nuclear forensic investigations. Furthermore, we evaluate the model ages in the context of available production records for the materials, which provides insight into the processes that may impact radiochronometry systems during uranium metal production.
