State of technology on hydrogen fueled gas turbine engines

A series of investigations was conducted episodically from the 1950's to the early 1970's to investigate the feasibility and potential problem areas in the use of hydrogen fuel for gas turbine engines. A brief summary and bibliography are presented of the research that has been conducted by NASA, its predecessor NACA, and by industry under U. S. Air Force sponsorship. Although development efforts would be required to provide hydrogen fueled gas turbine engines for aircraft, past research has shown that hydrogen fueled engines are feasible, and except for flight weight liquid hydrogen pumps, there are no problem areas relating to engines requiring significant research.

Digital flight control actuation system study

Flight control actuators and feedback sensors suitable for use in a redundant digital flight control system were examined. The most appropriate design approach for an advanced digital flight control actuation system for development and use in a fly-by-wire system was selected. The concept which was selected consisted of a PM torque motor direct drive. The selected system is compatible with concurrent and independent development efforts on the computer system and the control law mechanizations.

Operations analysis (study 2.1): Shuttle upper stage software requirements

An investigation of software costs related to space shuttle upper stage operations with emphasis on the additional costs attributable to space servicing was conducted. The questions and problem areas include the following: (1) the key parameters involved with software costs; (2) historical data for extrapolation of future costs; (3) elements of the basic software development effort that are applicable to servicing functions; (4) effect of multiple servicing on complexity of the operation; and (5) are recurring software costs significant. The results address these questions and provide a foundation for estimating software costs based on the costs of similar programs and a series of empirical factors.

Structural considerations in design of lightweight glass-fiber composite pressure vessels

The design concepts used for metal-lined glass-fiber composite pressure vessels are described, comparing the structural characteristics of the composite designs with each other and with homogeneous metal pressure vessels. Specific design techniques and available design data are identified. The discussion centers around two distinctly different design concepts, which provide the basis for defining metal lined composite vessels as either (1) thin-metal lined, or (2) glass fiber reinforced (GFR). Both concepts are described and associated development problems are identified and discussed. Relevant fabrication and testing experience from a series of NASA-Lewis Research Center development efforts is presented.

A 30-cm thruster power processor test console

The development of a high performance ion propulsion system composed of an ion thruster and its associated power processing equipment, dictates the establishment of a mutually compatible set of electrical characteristics. A 30-cm thruster power processing console has been developed which utilizes power and control circuitry applicable to flight hardware designs, incorporates interface circuitry for optional direct computer control, and has self-contained instrumentation for assessing steady-state and dynamic system behavior. This paper discusses the console's design, utility, performance, and the potential impact of this development effort on future hardware designs.

A north-south stationkeeping ion thruster system for ATS-F

A one millipound cesium ion thruster system experiment designed for the ATS-F satellite will be used to demonstrate north-south stationkeeping for synchronous satellites. Development effort leading to the present design will be described and test data for qualification and flight acceptance tests will be presented. These include a review of EMI evaluations tests made with the power conditioning subsystem and the thruster simulator, and an extended system operational test. During the extended test, 90 on-off cycles simulated thruster operation in orbit. A planned 18,000 hour ground test of a flight qualified thruster will be discussed.

Applications of cryogenics in electron microscopy

Description of research and development efforts which resulted in a high-voltage cryoelectron microscope system capable of consistent operation at 1.8 to 4.2 K. Attention is given to the design and operation of superconducting objective lenses providing enhanced resolution during longer exposure times at lower beam intensities (thus reducing radiation damage of specimens). A specific system described combines a closed-cycle superfluid helium refrigerator integrated with a modified 200 kV electron microscope. Consistent resolutions of 8 to 16 A are attained with significantly reduced radiation damage, contamination, and thermal noise in prolonged vibration-free examination of specimens at temperatures from 1.8 to 4.2 K. Applications in specific disciplines are discussed, including membrane ultrastructure, cryobiology, microelectronics, and general superconductivity research.

Status of wind-energy conversion

The utilization of wind energy is technically feasible as evidenced by the many past demonstrations of wind generators. The cost of energy from the wind has been high compared to fossil fuel systems. A sustained development effort is needed to obtain economical systems. The variability of the wind makes it an unreliable source on a short-term basis. However, the effects of this variability can be reduced by storage systems or connecting wind generators to fossil fuel systems, hydroelectric systems, or dispersing them throughout a large grid network. The NSF and NASA-Lewis Research Center have sponsored programs for the utilization of wind energy.

Environmental control system development for manned spacecraft 1960-1973

This paper provides an overview of the development of environmental revitalization techniques from their beginnings in caisson and submarine habitats, up to the present time. The use of CO2 adsorbents, such as LiOH and their application to the first U.S. manned spaceflight is described, together with the beginnings of the regenerable CO2 sorber technology using molecular sieves and its ultimate application to Skylab. The concepts and hardware systems used for atmospheric revitalization on all major U.S. ground-based manned tests is detailed, including CO2 reduction and O2 generation processes. Current research and development efforts are also outlined. The paper concludes with a detailed description of the recently completed SSP, the most advanced and complete ECS that has been fabricated to date.

Balloon infrared astronomy platform (BIRAP)

The development of a balloon-borne attitude control system for infrared astronomy studies is discussed. The Balloon Infrared Astronomy Platform (BIRAP) is the result of the development effort. The BIRAP uses electronic gimballing for the offset pointing which eliminates a set of mechanical gimbals. Guide stars with visual magnitudes as low as plus 6 are used for fine tracking assuring that all areas of the sky can be covered. The BIRAP control concept uses a closed loop system in the airborne equipment with automatic update through a command link that can be operated either manually or automatically by a ground based computer.

The feasibility of a common Saturn Uranus probe design is studied by considering the extreme atmospheres of both planets and their effects on a Pioneer spacecraft. It seems that approximately 85 percent of existing hardware can be used in an Uranus probe design, assuming that the design entry g level is somewhat reduced from current requirements. Additional development efforts include heat shielding, remotely activated batteries, mass spectrometer optimization, thermal insulation materials and high g packaging concepts.
