Islands in non-minimal dilaton gravity: exploring effective theories for black hole evaporation

We start from (3 + 1)-dimensional Einstein gravity with minimally coupled massless scalar matter, through spherical dimensional reduction, the matter theory is non-minimally coupled with the dilaton in (1 + 1)-dimensions. Despite its simplicity, constructing a self-consistent one-loop effective theory for this model remains a challenge, partially due to a Weyl-invariant ambiguity in the effective action. With a universal splitting property for the one-loop action, the ambiguity can be identified with the state-dependent part of the covariant quantum stress tensor. By introducing on-shell equivalent auxiliary fields to construct minimal candidates of Weyl-invariant terms, we derive a one-parameter family of one-loop actions with unique, regular, and physical stress tensors corresponding to the Boulware, Hartle-Hawking and Unruh states. We further study the back-reacted geometry and the corresponding quantum extremal islands that were inaccessible without a consistent one-loop theory. Along the way, we elaborate on the implications of our construction for the non-minimal dilaton gravity model.

Simple holography in general spacetimes

The simple or “outermost” wedge in AdS is the portion of the entanglement wedge that can be reconstructed with sub-exponential effort from CFT data. Here we furnish a definition in arbitrary spacetimes: given an input wedge a analogous to a CFT boundary region, the simple wedge z(a) is the largest wedge accessible by a “zigzag,” a certain sequence of antinormal lightsheets. We show that z(a) is a throat, and that it is contained in every other throat. This implies that z(a) is unique; that it is contained in the generalized entanglement wedge; and that it reduces to the AdS prescription as a special case. The zigzag explicitly constructs a preferred Cauchy slice that renders the simple wedge accessible from a; thus it adds a novel structure even in AdS. So far, no spacelike construction is known to reproduce these results, even in time-symmetric settings. This may have implications for the modeling of holographic encoding by tensor networks.

An apologia for islands

Entanglement islands have played a key role in the recent derivation of the Page curve and other progress on the black hole information problem. Arising from the inclusion of connected wormhole saddles in a gravitational replica trick, islands signal that degrees of freedom in the black hole interior are not microscopically independent of the exterior Hawking radiation. Islands were originally discovered in the context of AdS/CFT coupled to an external, nongravitating reservoir, where the coupling gives graviton excitations an anomalous boundary scaling dimension (or “mass”). It has been claimed in the literature that this mass is crucial for the existence of islands and even the Page curve itself. In this paper, however, we explain how entanglement islands can also appear in setups with massless gravitons and no external reservoir, giving a number of examples including the entanglement wedges of boundary CFT regions, of radiation at null infinity in asymptotically flat spacetimes, and of radiation inside a semiclassical but gravitating spacetime. In each case, the Page curve is physically observable and can be determined with sufficiently careful experiments on many copies of the black hole. We give general arguments for the existence of gauge-invariant operators in gravity which are compactly supported to all orders in perturbation theory (whenever no isometries of the background spacetime exist) and refine a recently-proposed explicit construction of such operators. When applied to islands, these results — together with entanglement wedge reconstruction — guarantee that semiclassical operators in the island can be approximated by nonperturbative operators on the Hawking radiation.

Nonperturbative quantum gravity in a closed Lorentzian universe

We study how meaningful physical predictions can arise in nonperturbative quantum gravity in a closed Lorentzian universe. In such settings, recent developments suggest that the quantum gravitational Hilbert space is one-dimensional and real for each α-sector, as induced by spacetime wormholes. This appears to obstruct the conventional quantum-mechanical prescription of assigning probabilities via projection onto a basis of states. While previous approaches have introduced external observers or augmented the theory to resolve this issue, we argue that quantum gravity itself contains all the necessary ingredients to make physical predictions. We demonstrate that the emergence of classical observables and probabilistic outcomes can be understood as a consequence of partial observability: physical observers access only a subsystem of the universe. Tracing out the inaccessible degrees of freedom yields reduced density matrices that encode classical information, with uncertainties exponentially suppressed by the environment’s entropy. We develop this perspective using both the Lorentzian path integral and operator formalisms and support it with a simple microscopic model. Our results show that quantum gravity in a closed universe naturally gives rise to meaningful, robust predictions without recourse to external constructs.

Effective field theories as Lagrange spaces

We present a formulation of scalar effective field theories in terms of the geometry of Lagrange spaces. The horizontal geometry of the Lagrange space generalizes the Riemannian geometry on the scalar field manifold, inducing a broad class of affine connections that can be used to covariantly express and simplify tree-level scattering amplitudes. Meanwhile, the vertical geometry of the Lagrange space characterizes the physical validity of the effective field theory, as a torsion component comprises strictly higher-point Wilson coefficients. Imposing analyticity, unitarity, and symmetry on the theory then constrains the signs and sizes of derivatives of the torsion component, implying that physical theories correspond to a special class of vertical geometry.

Soft gravitons in the BFSS matrix model

BFSS proposed that asymptotically flat M-theory is dual to a large N limit of the matrix quantum mechanics describing N nonrelativistic D0-branes. Recent insights on the soft symmetries of any quantum theory of gravity in asymptotically flat space are applied to the BFSS matrix model. It is shown that soft gravitons are realized by submatrices whose rank is held fixed in the large N M-theory limit, rather than the usual linear scaling with N for hard gravitons. The soft expansion is identified with the large N expansion and the soft theorem becomes a universal formula for the quantum mechanical scattering of such submatrix excitations. This formula is shown to be the Ward identity of large type IIA U(1) RR asymptotic gauge symmetry in the matrix model, whose asymptotic boundaries are at future and past timelike infinity.

Cosmology from random entanglement

We construct entangled microstates of a pair of holographic CFTs whose dual semiclassical description includes big bang-big crunch AdS cosmologies in spaces without boundaries. The cosmology is supported by inhomogeneous heavy matter and it partially purifies the bulk entanglement of two disconnected auxiliary AdS spacetimes. We show that the island formula for the fine grained entropy of one of the CFTs follows from a standard gravitational replica trick calculation. In generic settings, the cosmology is contained in the entanglement wedge of one of the two CFTs. We then investigate properties of the cosmology-to-boundary encoding map, and in particular, its non-isometric character. Restricting our attention to a specific class of states on the cosmology, we provide an explicit, and state-dependent, boundary representation of operators acting on the cosmology. Finally, under genericity assumptions, we argue for a non-isometric to approximately-isometric transition of the cosmology-to-boundary map for “simple” states on the cosmology as a function of the bulk entanglement, with tensor network toy models of our setup as a guide.

Open associahedra and scattering forms

We continue the study of open associahedra associated with bi-color scattering amplitudes initiated in ref. [1]. We focus on the facet geometries of the open associahedra, uncovering many new phenomena such as fiber-product geometries. We then provide novel recursion procedures for calculating the canonical form of open associahedra, generalizing recursion relations for bounded polytopes to unbounded polytopes.

Equivariant Verlinde Formula from Fivebranes and Vortices

We study complex Chern–Simons theory on a Seifert manifold M 3 by embedding it into string theory. We show that complex Chern–Simons theory on M 3 is equivalent to a topologically twisted supersymmetric theory and its partition function can be naturally regularized by turning on a mass parameter. We find that the dimensional reduction of this theory to 2d gives the low energy dynamics of vortices in fourdimensional gauge theory, the fact apparently overlooked in the vortex literature. We also generalize the relations between (1) the Verlinde algebra, (2) quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian, (3) Chern–Simons theory on Σ × S 1 and (4) index of a spin c Dirac operator on the moduli space of flat connections to a new set of relations between (1) the “equivariant Verlinde algebra” for a complex group, (2) the equivariant quantum K-theory of the vortex moduli space, (3) complex Chern–Simons theory on Σ × S 1 and (4) the equivariant index of a spinc Dirac operator on the moduli space of Higgs bundles.

Anisotropic stars for spherically symmetric spacetimes satisfying the Karmarkar condition

A new class of solution describing an anisotropic stellar configuration satisfying Karmarkar’s condition i.e. spherically symmetric metric of embedding class 1, is reported. It has been shown that the compact star model is physically well-behaved and meet all the physical requirements for a stable configuration in hydrostatic equilibrium. Our model describes compact stars like Vela X-1 and 4U1608-52 to a very good approximation. - Highlights: • We consider the Einstein field equations for spherically symmetric spacetimes of embedding class one. • We explore the Karmarkar condition for spherically symmetric, bounded matter configurations. • The Karmarkar condition reduces the solution-generating method to the Einstein field equations to a single metric function. • By specifying this metric function we generate physically plausible stellar configurations with anisotropic pressure.

Gravastars with higher dimensional spacetimes

Highlights: • A model of compact star in the higher dimensional spacetime is studied. • Cosmological constant is included in its purely constant character. • The star is described by interior region, intermediate thin spherical shell and exterior region. • Exact solutions are obtained which provide non-singular stable stellar system. - Abstract: We present a new model of gravastar in the higher dimensional Einsteinian spacetime including Einstein’s cosmological constant Λ. Following Mazur and Mottola (2001, 2004) we design the star with three specific regions, as follows: (I) Interior region, (II) Intermediate thin spherical shell and (III) Exterior region. The pressure within the interior region is equal to the negative matter density which provides a repulsive force over the shell. This thin shell is formed by ultra relativistic plasma, where the pressure is directly proportional to the matter-energy density which does counter balance the repulsive force from the interior whereas the exterior region is completely vacuum assumed to be de Sitter spacetime which can be described by the generalized Schwarzschild solution. With this specification we find out a set of exact non-singular and stable solutions of the gravastar which seems physically very interesting and reasonable.

Strange stars in Krori–Barua spacetime under f(R,T) gravity

Highlights: We study anisotropic strange star in f(R,T) gravity under Krori–Barua spacetime. The set of solutions provides non-singular as well as stable stellar model. Using observed values for mass and radius, we calculate different physical parameters. The coupling constant χ, between matter and geometry, is the key factor in f(R,T) gravity. - Abstract: In the present work, we study about highly dense compact stars which are made of quarks, specially strange quarks, adopting the Krori–Barua (KB) (Krori and Barua, 1975) metric in the framework of f(R,T) gravity. The equation of state (EOS) of a strange star can be represented by the MIT bag model as p r (r)=(1/3)[ρ(r)-4B g ] where B g is the bag constant, arises due to the quark pressure. Main motive behind our study is to find out singularity free and physically acceptable solutions for different features of strange stars. Here we also investigate the effect of alternative gravity in the formation of strange stars. We find that our model is consistent with various energy conditions and also satisfies Herrera’s cracking condition, TOV equation, static stability criteria of Harrison–Zel'dovich–Novikov etc. The value of the adiabatic indices as well as the EOS parameters re-establishes the acceptability of our model. Here in detail we have studied specifically three different strange star candidates, viz. PSRJ 1614 2230,Vela X-1 and Cen X-3. As a whole, present model fulfils all the criteria for stability. Another fascinating point we have discussed is the value of the bag constant which lies in the range (40-45) MeV/fm 3 . This is quite smaller than the predicted range, i.e., (55–75) MeV/fm 3 (Farhi and Jaffe, 1984 [2]; Alcock et al., 1986 [3]). The presence of the constant (χ), arises due to the coupling between matter and geometry, is responsible behind this reduction in B g value. For χ=0, we get the higher value for B g as the above mentioned predicted range.

Concerning Mössbauer experiments in a rotating system and their physical interpretation

We shortly review different attempts to interpret the results of Mössbauer rotor experiments in a rotating system and particularly we show that the latest work on this subject by J. Iovane and E. Benedetto (2019), which claims that the outcomes of these experiments can supposedly be explained via “desynchronization of clocks” in the rotating frame and in the laboratory frame, is inapplicable to all of the Mössbauer rotor experiments performed up to date and thus does not have any significance.

Gravastars in (3+1) dimensions admitting Karmarkar condition

Highlights: • Model of Gravastar in (3+1) dimensions is studied under GR. • Karmarkar condition of Embedding class 1 has been incorporated. • The class 1 condition provides an exact solution of three regions of gravastar. • Surface redshift confirms the stability of the model which is non-singular. - Abstract: The development of gravastar model by Mazur and Mottola (2004) is one of the most acceptable alternatives of conventional classical black hole. They have studied phase transition of the collapsing stellar objects at low temperature near event horizon which leads to the condensate phase, i.e. Bose–Einstein condensation. In the present study we have obtained a unique solution of this gravastar model under Einstein’s GR in (3+1) dimensions by incorporating the Karmarkar condition for embedding class 1. The most important motive of this work is to find an exact solution of the shell without taking the thin shell approximation. We have obtained singularity free finite solutions for the interior of the gravastar.

Phenomenology of SUGRA extensions of the Starobinsky model

We analyze BI-extended model in a complete form and compare the predictions with that of Starobinsky model. Under the parameter constraints in Planck 2018, we find that the dynamics of the whole inflation process described by BI-extended and Starobinsky models are nearly the same, even though there are some differences in the regions out of inflation. We also find the scales of parameters in BI-extended model and inflaton values at the first horizon crossing required to implement inflation. The changes of (n{sub s},r) fingerprints of BI-extended model and that of evolutions of inflaton field due to the variations of relevant parameters are also investigated.

Accretion of matter and spectra of binary X-ray sources in massive gravity

We study low-mass binary X-ray sources involving stellar mass black holes within massive gravity. Regarding the accretion disk, we adopt the standard model for an optically thick, cool, and geometrically thin disk by Shakura–Sunyaev. For the gravitational field generated by the black hole, we consider the analogue of the Schwarzschild–de Sitter space–time of Einstein’s theory in massive gravity, for which we found an additional term linear in the radial coordinate. Then, we compute the radial velocity, the energy density and the pressure as a function of the radial coordinate, and the X-ray emission’s soft spectral component expected from the disk. We also investigated in detail the impact of this new geometry. Our result indicates that by using observed spectra from confirmed X-ray binaries involving astrophysical black holes, we can put strong constraints on alternative theories of gravity.
