Slide Release Device

A prototype release mechanism is discussed which is interchangeable with the existing orbiter/external tank separation bolt and offers reduced weight, shock, and cost. The components are reuseable. The unit takes maximum advantage of the shank diameter and installs in the monoball just as does the shear bolt, by threading in the completely assembled condition. Actuation is different, in that instead of axially breaking the shank by very high pressure (on the order of 60,000 psi) using a very large force (over 235, 000 pounds), this mechanism releases the shank by cross-axis movement against a lubricated surface. Once free, the shank is driven out of the monoball by an axially precompressed spring. Final weight can be as low as 30 pounds, and the cartridge contains less than one gram of powder. The components show no significant wear after eleven actuations under load.

An Investigation of Assembly and Performance of a Resistoflex Dynatube 1/4 Inch Fitting

Installation of titanium (6Al-4V) threaded fittings on 1/4 in. tubing is sensitive to workmanship and to the state of repair of the installation tooling. Tooling with very slight out-of-specification imperfections produces less than optimum swaged fittings. A significant quantity of samples were fabricated and X-rays were used to determine the depth of swage. Joint performance was assessed through static and dynamic testing.

Data transport concepts for future NASA spacecraft

The anticipated increase in data quantity from NASA spacecraft over the next decade is expected to far exceed the capability of the present NASA data/information system to effectively manage and process that data. Conceptual designs aimed at providing more responsive and cost-effective methods for transporting and interpreting space-generated data are presented. Details of the Modular Data Transport System (MDTS) and Ancillary Data and Support Computing (ADSC) efforts done under the NASA End-to-End Data System (NEEDS) program are discussed. The common 'thread' throughout the data transport process involves the use of packet telemetry. Characteristics and benefits of packet telemetry are presented along with a discussion of techniques for generating and advantages of including ancillary data in each packet.

The H I Lyman continuum in solar prominences and its interpretation in the presence of inhomogeneities

Observations of the H I Lyman continuum are presented for nine hedgerow prominences observed at the limb with the Harvard EUV spectrometer on Skylab. Methods of analysis for both the continuum emission and absorption are developed for two contrasting models for the prominence fine structure, namely multiple resolved slabs, and multiple unresolved cylindrical threads. The absorption data set a lower limit on the total optical thickness at 912 A and on the number of structures in the line of sight. The emission data yield a mean electron temperature of 7524 + or - 739 K and a mean brightness temperature of 6316 + or - 75 K. Taken together the emission and absorption data set firm constraints on the ionization, density, and fractional volume.

Project Galileo mission design

The mission design for Project Galileo is described. Details are presented on the design of the trajectory from launch through completion of the satellite tour, with emphasis on how this design is influenced both by science requirements on the mission and by the interaction of this design with the various elements of the Project. A number of features contribute to the uniqueness of the mission design for this Project. Among the more salient of these that are described in this paper are the use of numerous planetary or satellite encounters for gravity assisted trajectory shaping, and closely related to this, the threading of a trajectory through the Galilean satellite system which meets the mission objectives with a minimum of propulsive trajectory corrections.

Model exospheres of the ringed planets

The theory of rotating ion exospheres in dipolar magnetic field geometries is used to predict certain effects of the rings on the inner plasmaspheres of the ringed planets Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus. The analysis here assumes a purely ionospheric source. It is found that if rings affect only the trapped plasma, the cold plasma density at Saturn will be either reduced or increased by a factor of approximately 2 at L = 1.65, depending on whether the ring populates or empties the trapped trajectories. It is found that if all cold plasma particles on trapped orbits are absorbed and the rings are not a source of plasma, this simple exospheric theory can explain the ionospheric density profile inferred from the Pioneer 11 Saturn radio occultation experiment, in which a localized peak in the profile was observed on field lines threading the Guerin division between the C and D rings.

Some possible effects of Jupiter's rings on the Jovian inner plasmasphere

The ionospheric plasma density on magnetic field lines threading the Jovian rings which are located inside approximately 1.8 Jupiter radii on the jovigraphic equatorial plane is calculated by using a rotating ion exosphere model. It is found that the bulk of the ionospheric particles on these field lines are on ballistic trajectories. On field lines approximately symmetric with respect to the jovigraphic equator, the ring, which to a first approximation would absorb the population of trapped particles, consequently has little effect. On field lines which are made asymmetric by the higher-order multipoles of Jupiter's field and the tilt of the dipole axis, the rings may have a significant effect. It is suggested that better definition of the rings' atmospheric and ionospheric properties is required to model these localized effects. If the rings are found to be an important plasma source for the inner magnetosphere, the present exospheric model will have to be revised.

Locking Nut and Bolt

Threaded fastener locks parts securely together despite together large loosening torques, even under conditions of high temperature and vibration. Positive locking action is suitable for use where conventional fasteners tend to work loose--for example, on high-speed rotating machinery. Bolt, nut and key are joined together so key occupies alined slots in bolt and nut and prevents nut from rotating off bolt.

Integrated command, control, communications and computation system functional architecture

The functional architecture for an integrated command, control, communications, and computation system applicable to the command and control portion of the NASA End-to-End Data. System is described including the downlink data processing and analysis functions required to support the uplink processes. The functional architecture is composed of four elements: (1) the functional hierarchy which provides the decomposition and allocation of the command and control functions to the system elements; (2) the key system features which summarize the major system capabilities; (3) the operational activity threads which illustrate the interrelationahip between the system elements; and (4) the interfaces which illustrate those elements that originate or generate data and those elements that use the data. The interfaces also provide a description of the data and the data utilization and access techniques.

Torque vs. induced load of A-286, and MP35N nuts and bolts with cadmium, dry film, and cetyl alcohol lubricants

Data for specific joint design, utilizing various combinations of bolt, nut and lubricants in typical structure of the shuttle booster rocket is obtained. Requirements of the structure performance criteria were to withstand temperatures of 260 C (500 F) and to provide a nut lubricant which would be compatible with sealants used in the joint. Cadmium plating and dry film lubricant meeting the requirements of MIL-L-8937 were the lubricants specified. In a follow up effort, cadmium plating and cetyl alcohol were further specified The materials for the bolt and nut combinations were MP35N and A-286. These materials demand a lubricant to be used to prevent galling of the thread when tightened and also to help reduce the scatter of clamping load in application.

The overall structure and evolution of active regions

The evolutionary characteristics and structure of the magnetic fields and atmospheric phenomena associated with the development of a solar magnetic region are discussed. Bipolar magnetic regions are introduced as the source of all solar magnetic fields, formed as bundles of magnetic flux rise to and break through the solar surface and spread throughout the photosphere, chromosphere and corona. The photospheric magnetic region is shown to be characterized by bipolar flux regions of various sizes emerging rapidly for a few days, then expanding and decreasing in flux for several months and fragmenting. Sunspots and faculae are considered as tracers of the magnetic regions in the upper photosphere or lower chromosphere, while chromospheric tracers include arch filaments, field transition arches, long chromospheric threads, disk filaments and dark fibrils in chromospheric lines. The transition region and lower corona exhibit a multithermal plasma distribution, with low-temperature plasmas confined to the footprints and legs of magnetic field lines and high-temperature plasmas originating in loops or systems of unresolved loops. The bipolar magnetic region is also shown to interact with its surroundings to produce an interconnected field line pattern.
