First-Principle Studies of Ferrimagnetic Double Perovskite Ca{sub 2}FeMoO{sub 6} Compound

Using first-principle calculations, the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the Ca{sub 2}FeMoO{sub 6} double perovskite compound is investigated. Different spin-ordering: ferrimagnetic (FiM), ferromagnetic (FM), and anti-ferromagnetic (AFM1 and AFM2) using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and GGA + U (Hubbard Coulomb onsite correction) are evaluated to determine the theoretical ground state. The value of the Hubbard Coulomb U parameter is varied from 1 to 4 eV. The ground state is found to be a FM spin-ordering within the GGA approach and FiM spin-ordering within the GGA + U approach (where U ≥ 3 eV) which is the experimental preferred configuration. We obtain the FiM spin-ordered half semiconducting state within the GGA + U approach for the Ca{sub 2}FeMoO{sub 6} compound. Within the GGA + U (where U ≥ 3 eV) approach, the FM phase maintains a half-metallic character with a net magnetic moment of 4 0 μ{sub B}, whereas the FiM phase have a spin gapless semiconducting (SGS) behavior at U = 3 eV, and an insulating character at U = 4 eV, with a net magnetic moment of 4 0 μ{sub B}. The main features found in the density of states profile show that the hybridization of the Fe and Mo d orbitals play an important role in determining the electronic and magnetic character of this compound.

Magnetic Behavior of Superconductor 2H-NbSe{sub 2} Intercalated with Iron: First Principle Study

We investigated the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of iron-intercalated niobium selinium, Fe{sub x}NbSe{sub 2} for x=0 and 0.25, from first principle calculations. The tendency towards the localization in superconductors criterion which has been extracted from our results placed the NbSe{sub 2} compound in vicinity of Fe-based superconductors. The DFT plus on-site coulomb repulsion U (DFT+U) and the exact exchange for correlated electrons (DFT+EECE)-based hybrid functional were used including the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) to understand the role of correlation and SOC effects in this type of systems. The calculation predicts the correct antiferromagnetic (AF) ground state, from both the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and GGA+U. A shift up in the Fermi energy was observed after the intercalation of 2H-NbSe{sub 2} with iron, indicating a charge transfer from Fe to the host compound. The obtained magnetic moment of Fe is enhanced by a correlation effect in both DFT+U and DFT+EECE over the small value from GGA-only. Moreover, a large unquenched orbital magnetic moment is saturated to m{sub orb}∼0.6μ{sub B} under a moderate correlation effect of U{sub eff}∼2.0eV. We also show that the correlation effect is important along side with SOC in order to get a true picture for the band filling consistent with that of the crystal field splitting and a large unquenched m{sub orb} which has been found experimentally in such systems. Therefore, the combination of correlation and SOC effects is a decisive choice for further studies of such systems.

Designed metal-insulator transition in low-symmetry magnetic intermetallics

Compounds exhibiting half-metallic character and metal-insulator transitions draw considerable attention in condensed-matter and materials physics due to their potential use in spintronics. Here we show that specific electron doping plays a crucial role in tailoring thermodynamic, structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of materials derived from low-symmetry magnetic intermetallics, exemplified on triclinic Mn 4 Al 11 . Upon chemical doping of Al by Ge, we predict improved phase stability and adherence to a generalized “18-n rule” governing closed-shell configurations in intermetallic with narrow bandgaps. Validating experiments include measurements of phase stability and electronic transport properties of electron-doped Mn 4 Al 10 Ge that crystallizes in the Mn 4 Al 11 -type structure, confirming the bandgap opening as predicted by chemical analysis and density-functional theory. Here we also demonstrate theoretically that hydrostatic pressure enhances the predicted half-metallic gap in the up-spin channel, which leads to a ferrimagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transition driven by Mn-Mn charge ordering in the Mn 4 Al 11 parent. We have also discussed the generality of our approach in predicting the design of other classes of intermetallics including half and full Heusler compounds.

Influence of a Strong Magnetic Field on Magnetic Order in Polycrystalline Layered Cobaltites EuBaCo{sub 2 –x}O{sub 5.5 – δ}

The magnetic properties of polycrystalline EuBaCo{sub 2 –x}O{sub 5.5 – δ} (x ≤ 0.1, δ ≤ 0.14) are studied in the temperature range 2 K < T < 300 K in magnetic fields H ≤ 90 kOe. A comparison is made of the dependencies of magnetization M on temperature T and magnetic field H for polycrystalline and single crystal EuBaCo{sub 1.90}O{sub 5.36}, in which only Cu(III) ions are present. It is shown that in the magnetically ordered temperature range of magnetic order, the samples are ferrimagnetic, in which antiferromagnetic interactions between the nearest Co{sup 3+} ions with the same spins compete with the ferromagnetic exchange. With a decrease in temperature, a strong magnetic field affects the magnetic order. At T = 2 K in fields H = 50–90 kOe, all samples exhibit the properties of mictomagnetism. There are a shift in the hysteresis loops M(H) and a large difference in the values of the magnetization of the sample cooled in a magnetic field M (FC) and without a field M (ZFC) due to unidirectional magnetic anisotropy. In this case, there is no saturation of magnetization. The field dependences of magnetization taken in the cooling and heating in unequal fields (CHUF) mode indicate a metastable magnetic state. Near T = 20–30 K, an orientational transition characteristic of micromagnets takes place and a complex ferrimagnetic structure is formed. The main reasons for the manifestation of mictomagnetism properties in layered cobaltites are the presence of magnetoactive Co{sup 3+} ions in the states with intermediate and high spins at low temperatures and structural defects that affect the exchange interaction between the nearest neighbors. Nonmagnetic Co{sup 3+} ions in the low-spin state can also act as defects.

Theoretical framework for new magnetic materials for quantum computing and information storage. Final report for the Award No. DE-SC0018910

The focus of this grant was on molecular magnetic materials for information storage and quantum computing. We have been developing robust, first-principle methods for computing relevant electronic and magnetic properties of molecular building blocks (SMMs) of novel magnetic materials and quantum computers. These tools enable theoretical modeling of SMMs’ behavior, facilitating the interpretation of experimental studies and aiding the design of novel magnetic materials. Our strategy is based on the spin-flip (SF) approach, which extends the hierarchy of black-box single-reference methods to strongly correlated systems. Specifically, we developed general scalable algorithms and computer codes for calculating molecular properties, with an emphasis on spin-related properties, such as zero-field splittings, hyperfine couplings, and g-tensors. While our primary focus was on SF wave functions and SF-TDDFT, the underlying theory and computer codes were formulated using reduced density matrices, such that these tools are applicable to a broader class of methods. To extend the scope of applicability of wave-function-based SF methods to larger systems, we developed reduced-scaling approaches for the equation-of-motion coupled-cluster (EOM-CC) methods and continue developing libtensor (our open-source general tensor contraction library for many-body methods). We carried out extensive benchmarks and also carried out several applications.

Molecular spin frustration in mixed-chelate Fe5 and Fe6 oxo clusters with high ground state spin values

The synthesis, structures, and magnetic properties are reported of three new polynuclear Fe III complexes containing the anions of picolinic acid (picH) and triethanolamine (teaH 3 ) as chelates. The complexes [Fe 6 O 2 (OH) 2 (O 2 CR) 4 (pic) 4 (teaH) 2 ] (R = Me (1), Ph (2)) and [Fe 5 O 2 (O 2 CBu t ) 4 (pic)3(teaH) 2 ] (3) were obtained from the reaction of [Fe 3 O(O 2 CR)6(H 2 O) 3 ](NO 3 ) (R = Me, Ph, But) with picH and teaH3 in a 1:2:1 ratio in MeCN. The core of 1 and 2 consists of an [Fe 4 (µ 3 -O) 2 ] 8+ ‘planar-butterfly’ unit to which is attached an Fe atom on either side by bridging O atoms. The core of 3 consists of an [Fe 5 (µ 3 -O) 2 ] 11+ unit comprising two near-perpendicular vertex-sharing [Fe 3 (µ 3 -O)] 7+ triangular units. Variable-temperature (T) and -field (H) solid-state dc and ac magnetization (M) studies in the 5.0–300 K temperature range revealed that 1 and 2 have an S = 5 ground state spin whereas 3 has an S = 5/2 ground state. J ij exchange couplings were calculated by DFT and a magnetostructural correlation (MSC) for polynuclear Fe III /O complexes. This allowed rationalization of the observed ground states from the analysis of the spin frustration effects operative, and provided good input values for fits of the experimental χMT vs T data to obtain the J ij values.

Coexistence and Coupling of Multiple Charge Orderings and Spin States in Hexagonal Ferrite

The coupling between charge and spin orderings in strongly correlated systems plays a crucial role in fundamental physics and device applications. As a candidate of multiferroic materials, LuFe 2 O 4 with a nominal Fe 2.5+ valence state has the potential for strong charge–spin interactions; however, these interactions have not been fully understood until now. Here, combining complementary characterization methods with theoretical calculations, two types of charge orderings with distinct magnetic properties are revealed. The ground states of LuFe 2 O 4 are decided by the parallel/antiparallel coupling of both charge and spin orderings in the adjacent FeO double layers. Whereas the ferroelectric charge ordering remains ferrimagnetic below 230 K, the antiferroelectric ordering undergoes antiferromagnetic–ferrimagnetic–paramagnetic transitions from 2 K to room temperature. This study demonstrates the unique aspects of strong spin-charge coupling within LuFe 2 O 4 . Our results shed light on the coexistence and competing nature of orderings in quantum materials.

Electron–Nucleus Hyperfine Coupling Calculated from Restricted Active Space Wavefunctions and an Exact Two-Component Hamiltonian

Exact two-component (X2C) relativistic nuclear hyperfine magnetic field operators were incorporated in X2C ab-initio wavefunction calculations at the multi-reference restricted active space (RAS) level for calculations of nuclear hyperfine magnetic properties. Spin-orbit coupling was treated via RAS state interaction (SO-RASSI). The method was tested by calculations of electron – nucleus hyperfine coupling constants. The approach, implemented in the OpenMolcas program, overcomes a major limitation of a previous SO-RASSI implementation for hyperfine coupling that relied on non-relativistic hyperfine operators [J. Chem. Theor. Comput. 2015, 11, 538–549] and therefore had only limited applicability. Furthermore, results from calculations on systems with light and heavy main group elements, transition metals, lanthanides, and one actinide complex, demonstrate reasonably good agreement with experimental data, where available, as long as the active space can generate sufficient spin polarization.

Morphologies and magnetism of AxB1-xFe2O4 self-assembled nanospheres

Highlights: • A modified solvothermal method are successfully applied to prepare bimetallic ferrite microspheres. • The replaced ions coexist in same spinel lattice and cause its distortion. • The morphologies and magnetic properties are affected by type and content of ions. • As-prepared samples belong to paramagnetic materials with low coercivity. - Abstract: A series of A{sub x}B{sub 1-x}Fe{sub 2}O{sub 4} (x = 0.05–0.50) (A, B as Zn{sup 2+}, Ni{sup 2+}, Co{sup 2+}) micro-nanospheres were prepared using a facile one-pot solvothermal method. All products are spinel structures with grain sizes of around 11–15 nm as characterised by using XRD. SEM and TEM images show that Ni{sub x}Zn{sub 1-x}Fe{sub 2}O{sub 4} (x = 0.05–0.50) are microspheres self-assembled by nanoparticles with an average diameter of 200–300 nm, but the sizes of Ni{sub x}Co{sub 1-x}FeO{sub 4} (x = 0.10–0.50) and Zn{sub x}Co{sub 1-x}Fe{sub 2}O{sub 4} (x = 0.10–0.50) micro-nanospheres increase from 20 nm to 200 nm with increasing amounts of Ni{sup 2+} and Zn{sup 2+}. As-prepared A{sub x}B{sub 1-x}Fe{sub 2}O{sub 4} samples are paramagnetic materials with coercivities of no more than 177.5 Oe. The morphologies and magnetism of A{sub x}B{sub 1-x}Fe{sub 2}O{sub 4} could be adjusted by changing the amount of A{sup 2+} and B{sup 2+}.

Paramagnetic Molecular Semiconductors Combining Anisotropic Magnetic Ions with TCNQ Radical Anions

We report the synthesis, magnetic properties, and transport properties of paramagnetic metal complexes, [Co(DMF) 4 (TCNQ) 2 ](TCNQ) 2 (1), [La(DMF) 8 (TCNQ)](TCNQ) 5 (2), and [Nd(DMF) 7 (TCNQ)](TCNQ) 5 (3) (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide, TCNQ = 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane). All three compounds contain fractionally charged TCNQ δ– anions (0 < δ < 1) and mononuclear complex cations in which the coordination environment of a metal center includes several DMF molecules and one or two terminally coordinated TCNQ δ– anions. The coordinated TCNQ δ– anions participate in π–π stacking interactions with noncoordinated TCNQ δ– anions, forming columnar substructures that provide efficient charge-transporting pathways. Furthermore, temperature-dependent conductivity measurements demonstrate that all three compounds exhibit semiconducting behavior.

Development of high B s Fe–Ni-based metal amorphous nanocomposite by optimization of glass-forming ability

Thermocalc simulations identified compositions with good glass-forming ability (GFA) by locating minima in liquidus temperature, and solidification range in (Fe 70 Ni 30 ) x (B-Si-Nb) 100-x alloys with x = 82% and x = 85%, increased compared to previously developed x = 80% alloys. 3 compositions in the x = 82% system and 1 in the x = 85% system were successfully cast as amorphous magnetic ribbon. Magnetic properties of as-cast alloys showed improvements in Curie temperature and saturation induction, especially for the 85% alloy. Crystallization behavior in the 85% alloy was determined to occur as a 2-step process. Annealing studies showed (Fe 70 Ni 30 ) 82 Nb 2 Si 0 B 16 and (Fe 70 Ni 30 ) 82 Nb 3 Si 0 B 15 alloys to exhibit low coercivity and high B s with annealing. TEM results show significant crystallization in as-cast ribbon. The (Fe 70 Ni 30 ) 85 Nb 0.5 Si 0 B 14.5 alloy as-cast has small, uniformly distributed grains, allowing a useful nanocrystalline alloy to be produced as cast. Lastly, the parameter ΔT xg , the temperature range in which the material can be thermomechanically processed, was in the range of 12–23 °C.

Oxy-fluorophosphate glass doped SmO{sup 3+} as solid state dosimeter via spectroscopic techniques

In the present work, collective studies on optical, structural and magnetic properties of 0.5% SmO{sup 3+} ions in new easily melting fluorophosphate glass of the basic composition 70P{sub 2}O{sub 5}–20AlF{sub 3}–10NaF were carried out. The same combined spectral measurements (UV–Vis, FTIR, and ESR) were repeated after successive gamma irradiation. These collective spectral studies are expected to throw some insight on the effect of host fluorophosphate glass on these selected spectral properties of samarium ions together with identifying the effects of gamma irradiation on both the host fluorophosphate glass and on samarium ions and reaching to the resultant generated induced defects. The experimental results exhibit that, the slope of the UV–Vis line is sufficiently high in order to this tool is preferable to be elected as a suitable tool for the dosimetric purpose for this glass composition. The results in this manuscript propose that it is possible to use these techniques to determine if the glass sample may be used as solid-state dosimeters for gamma dose measurements in the range from 0.1 up to 15 kGy due to their linearity with the absorbed dose, color change, low fading for time periods up to 25 days and good response reproducibility.

Nano-casted Metal Oxide Aerogels as Dual Purpose Structural Components for Space Exploration

NASA missions and space exploration rely on strong, ultra lightweight materials. Such materials are needed for building up past and present space vehicles such as the Sojourner Rover (1997) or the two MERs (2003), but also for a number of components and/or systems including thermal insulators, Solar Sails, Rigid Aeroshells, and Ballutes. The purpose of my internship here at Glenn Research Center is to make dual purpose materials; materials that in addition to being lightweight have electronic, photophysical and magnetic properties and, therefore, act as electronic components and sensors as well as structural components. One type of ultra lightweight material of great interest is aerogels, which have densities ranging from 0.003 g/cc to 0.8 g/cc . However, aerogels are extremely fragile and, as a result, have limited practical applications. Recently, Glenn Research Center has developed a process of nano-casting polymers onto the inorganic network of silica-based aerogels increasing the strength 300 fold while only increasing the density 3 fold. By combining the process of nano-casting polymers with inorganic oxide networks other than silica, we are actively pursuing lightweight dual purpose materials. To date, thirty different inorganic oxide aerogels have been prepared using either standard sol-gel chemistry or a non-alkoxide method involving metal chloride precursors and an epoxide; epichlorohydrin, propylene oxide or trimethylene oxide, as proton scavengers. More importantly, preliminary investigations show that the residual surface hydroxyl groups on each of these inorganic oxide aerogels can be successfully crosslinked with urethane. In addition to characterizing physical and mechanical properties such as density, strength and flexibility, each of these metal oxide aerogels are being characterized for thermal and electronic conductivity and magnetic and optical properties.

Phase-Slip Lines in Wide Superconducting Strips: Charge and Spin Relaxation Lengths

Penetration of spin-polarized charges from a nearby ferromagnetic metallic layer into 100-μm-wide superconducting films of Pb and Mo–Re alloy with similar critical parameters but quite different spin-orbit coupling strengths is studied. It is shown that the diffusion of magnetic properties into a nearby superconductor can be employed as an electrically tunable source of phase-slip events manifesting itself by a staircase response in current-voltage characteristics of the superconductor with discrete metastable resistivity states. Unlike for normal metals, the spin injection into an adjoining quasi-two-dimensional superconducting strip creates not only spin but also charge imbalance in the quasiparticle population which are not necessarily relaxing over the same time scale. Interplay of the two intrinsic length scales sets the width of a phase-slip line in superconducting strips under the injection which may change from nano- to micro-scales. Its experimental determination can be used for estimating the longest relaxation length in a superconductor. Our observations show that spin-orbit coupling in superconductors may lead to novel non-trivial effects linking spin and charge degrees of freedom.

Single- and Double-Layer Microwave Absorbers of Cobalt Ferrite and Graphite Composite at Gigahertz Frequency

Microwave absorbers of cobalt ferrite and graphite composite have been fabricated to investigate the broadening of absorption frequency by mixing small and large particles and comparing single- and double-layer composites in order to broaden the absorption frequency and to enhance multireflection and scattering of electromagnetic wave. CoO and Fe{sub 2}O{sub 3} precursors were mechanically alloyed and sintered at 800, 900, 1000 and 1100 {sup ∘}C in order to synthesise various particle sizes and shapes. A mixed sample of powders sintered at the above mentioned temperatures was also formed. The morphological, phase, and magnetic properties of these samples were studied. Two series of samples have been synthesised which were single- and double-layer composites. Single-layer composite consisted of mixed particles, and their thickness parameters were varied. Double-layer composite was also prepared with various particle sizes of CoFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} as a layer and graphene as another layer. The effect of these layers as matching and absorbing layer was studied. The degree of crystallinity of CoFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} was increased with increase of sintering temperature. Microstructural study showed the evolution of particle size and shape subjected to sintering temperature. Arrhenius plot showed two stages of growth process with activation energy calculated at 26.85 and 83.091 kJ/mol. The critical size of single domain of this sample plotted from the coercivity against particle size was 63.44 nm. Single-layer composite with mixed particle size was not able to show good electromagnetic (EM)-wave absorption; however double-layer composite showed good return loss. The mechanism of the EM-wave absorption of double-layer composite was discussed in this paper.

Search for New Half-Metallic Ferromagnets in Quaternary Diamond-Like Compounds I–II{sub 2}–III–VI{sub 4} and I{sub 2}–II–IV–VI{sub 4} (I = Cu; II = Mn, Fe, Co; III = In; IV = Ge, Sn; VI = S, Se, Te)

The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties I–II{sub 2}–III–VI{sub 4} and I{sub 2}–II–IV–VI{sub 4} are investigated firstly by using the first-principles calculations. The investigation was done using the ab initio full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FPLAPW) method where the exchange–correlation potential was calculated with the frame of GGA and GGA+U. The theoretically predicted lattice parameters for I–II{sub 2}–III–VI{sub 4} and I{sub 2}–II–IV–VI{sub 4} alloys are in good agreement with existing experimental measurements. The possibility of half-metallic ferromagnetism in I–II{sub 2}–III–VI{sub 4} and I{sub 2}–II–IV–VI{sub 4} (I = Cu; II = Mn, Fe, Co; III = In; IV = Ge, Sn; VI = S, Se, Te) was analyzed by electronic band structure and density of states calculations. We found that Cu{sub 2}CoGeS{sub 4}, Cu{sub 2}FeGeS{sub 4}, Cu{sub 2}FeSnS{sub 4}, and CuMn{sub 2}InSe{sub 4} compounds exhibit a complete half-metallic characteristic with a total spin moment of 3.00, 4.00, 4.00, and 10.00 μ{sub B} and direct band gap of (Eg ↑ = 0.63 eV), (Eg ↑ = 0.90 eV), (Eg ↑ = 0.31 eV), and (Eg ↓ = 1.10 eV), respectively. AC Susceptibility of BaZrO{sub 3} Nanoparticles Added YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7−δ} Superconductor Prepared via Coprecipitation Method

In this work, magnetic properties of polycrystalline samples YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7−δ} added with x mol.% of BaZrO{sub 3} (BZO) nanoparticles (x = 0.0, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 5.0, and 7.0) were studied by AC susceptibility (ACS) measurement. The samples were prepared using coprecipitation (COP) method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that all the samples were composed of Y-123 as the major phase and Y-211 as the secondary phase. XRD peak of BZO was also observed in the samples added with BZO nanoparticles. The intensity of the peak became higher with increasing amount of BZO addition indicating the presence of increased amount of the unreacted nanoparticles in the samples. The refined lattice parameters indicated that all the samples have an orthorhombic crystal structure without the occurrence of orthorhombic-tetragonal phase transformation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that the samples have randomly distributed grains with irregular shape. The average grain size increased from 0.30 μ m for the pure sample to 0.50 μ m for the BZO addition of 7.0 mol.%. ACS measurement showed a slight decrease of onset critical temperature, T{sub c−onset} (< 1 K) with BZO addition. Both phase lock-in temperature, T{sub cj}, and coupling peak temperature, T{sub p}, remained relatively unchanged for BZO addition up to 3.0 mol.%. Based on the Bean critical state model, the calculated intergranular critical current density, J{sub cm}, for the pure sample is 1.88 A/cm{sup 2} at T{sub p} = 84.8 K. For the sample added with 7.0 mol.% of BZO, J{sub cm} at T{sub p} = 83.6 K is 1.95 A/cm{sup 2}.
