Scientific and Technical Basis of Application of Nanostructured Materials Science and Nanoelectronics in Systems of Electromechanical Energy Converters for Special Purposes

We consider the current state of a completely new area of science; microsystem electromechanics. Тhe wide spectra of its practical applications and prospects for further development are analyzed. We discuss in detail two main directions of creating micro- and nanoelectromechanical converters as basic elements of microsystem electromechanics: “top down” and “down top.” We also describe the main technological methods in constructing basic functional elements of microsystem electromechanics, areas of their application in traditional and new technologies (information and computer technologies, medicine, aerospace, rocket and artillery systems, etc.). At the same time, we discuss some key issues of generalized physical and mathematical modeling of microelectromechanical and nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS). A new generalized approach is proposed to study dynamic and energy characteristics of MEMS and NEMS as complex dynamic systems with binary conjugate subsystems. Based on proposed theoretical principles and models, the possibilities of studying electrophysical characteristics of biological nanostructures have been considered.

Generalized Continuum Phenomenological Model of Viscous Fluid: Analysis of Local Mass Displacements

The concept of local mass displacements (as a measure of nonlocality of the state of a physically small element of a body) is used to formulate a complete system of relations of the gradient-type mathematical model of viscous compressible fluid. In this model, the relationship between the thermomechanical processes and the process of local mass displacements, its irreversibility, and the inertia properties are taken into account. It is shown that, in the stationary approximation, the obtained system of relations enables us to justify the appearance of wedging pressure in thin interlayers of fluid.

Shuttle cryogenics supply system. Optimization study. Volume 5 B-2, part 1: Appendix programmers manual for math model

An appendix to the programmers manual for the mathematical model pertaining to the design of cryogenic supply systems for spacecraft is presented. The program listing was produced using the EXEC-8 LISTALL processor which lists a file in alphabetical order. Since the processor does not differentiate between subroutines, functions, and procedure definition processors, each subprogram has been relabeled to clearly identify the type of symbolic listing.

Application of the Brown-Shook model to the Kirkwood gaps and resonant asteroids

The mathematical model developed by Brown and Shook is used to explain the absence of asteroids in the Kirkwood gaps as well as the existence of some resonant asteroids with orbital periods commensurable to that of Jupiter. In addition, this model can possibly explain the biased number distributions at the commensurable positions of both resonant gaps and clusters. However, this resonant model is probably not applicable to the Saturnian ring system due to the possible cosmogonic plasma process during its formation.

A life cycle cost economics model for projects with uniformly varying operating costs

A mathematical model is developed for calculating the life cycle costs for a project where the operating costs increase or decrease in a linear manner with time. The life cycle cost is shown to be a function of the investment costs, initial operating costs, operating cost gradient, project life time, interest rate for capital and salvage value. The results show that the life cycle cost for a project can be grossly underestimated (or overestimated) if the operating costs increase (or decrease) uniformly over time rather than being constant as is often assumed in project economic evaluations. The following range of variables is examined: (1) project life from 2 to 30 years; (2) interest rate from 0 to 15 percent per year; and (3) operating cost gradient from 5 to 90 percent of the initial operating costs. A numerical example plus tables and graphs is given to help calculate project life cycle costs over a wide range of variables.

Modeling of exposure to carbon monoxide in fires

A mathematical model is developed to predict carboxyhemoglobin concentrations in regions of the body for short exposures to carbon monoxide levels expected during escape from aircraft fires. The model includes the respiratory and circulatory dynamics of absorption and distribution of carbon monoxide and carboxyhemoglobin. Predictions of carboxyhemoglobin concentrations are compared to experimental values obtained for human exposures to constant high carbon monoxide levels. Predictions are within 20% of experimental values. For short exposure times, transient concentration effects are predicted. The effect of stress is studied and found to increase carboxyhemoglobin levels substantially compared to a rest state.

Modeling of the silane FBR system

Development of a mathematical model for fluidized bed pyrolysis of silane that relates production rate and product properties (size, size distribution, presence or absence of fines) with bed size and operating conditions (temperature, feed concentration, flow rate, seed size, etc.) and development of user oriented algorithm for the model are considered. A parameter sensitivity study of the model was also developed.

SSME structural dynamic model development, phase 2

A set of test correlated mathematical models of the SSME High Pressure Oxygen Turbopump (HPOTP) housing and rotor assembly was produced. New analysis methods within the EISI/EAL and SPAR systems were investigated and runstreams for future use were developed. The LOX pump models have undergone extensive modification since the first phase of this effort was completed. The rotor assembly from the original model was abandoned and a new, more detailed model constructed. A description of the new rotor math model is presented. Also, the pump housing model was continually modified as additional test data have become available. This model is documented along with measured test results. Many of the more advanced features of the EAL/SPAR finite element analysis system were exercised. These included the cyclic symmetry option, the macro-element procedures, and the fluid analysis capability. In addition, a new tool was developed that allows an automated analysis of a disjoint structure in terms of its component modes. A complete description of the implementation of the Craig-Bampton method is given along with two worked examples.
