Dual-polarization O-band silicon photonics transmitter with an integrated tunable laser, Mach-Zehnder modulators, and SOAs

Presented is an O-band silicon photonics dual-polarization coherent/IMDD modulator integrated with semiconductor optical amplifiers and tunable laser to enhance the short-reach link budget. The laser demonstrated output power >6 dBm and a <250 kHz linewidth over a 14 nm tuning range. Modulators paired with custom 64 Gbaud QPSK drivers exhibited improved analog link sensitivity compared to similar devices without integrated gain sections. They also demonstrated 53 Gbaud dual-polarization PAM4 operation when characterized with a linear driver and MaxLinear 100G/lane DSP board. Both optical links achieved BERs at the KP4-FEC threshold and overall transmitter assembly energy consumption <6.9 pJ/bit without any thermal control when at steady room temperatures.

Ultrafast optical modulation of vibrational strong coupling in ReCl(CO) 3 (2,2-bipyridine)

Polaritons – hybrid light-matter states formed from the strong coupling of a bright molecular transition with a confined photonic mode – may offer new opportunities for optical control of molecular behavior. Vibrational strong coupling (VSC) has been reported to impact ground-state chemical reactivity, but its influence on electronic excited-state dynamics remains unexplored. Here, we take a first step towards excited-state VSC by demonstrating optical modulation of the ReCl(CO) 3 (bpy), (bpy = 2,2-bipyridine) complex under VSC using femtosecond ultraviolet (UV)-pump/infrared (IR)-probe spectroscopy. We establish ground-state VSC of ReCl(CO) 3 (bpy) in a microfluidic Fabry-Pérot cavity equipped with indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated mirrors. ITO is effectively dichroic as it is reflective in the IR and transmissive in the UV-visible and therefore minimizes optical interference. Excitation with UV pump light drives ReCl(CO) 3 (bpy) into a manifold of electronic excited states that subsequently undergo non-radiative relaxation dynamics. We probe the transient response of the strongly-coupled system in the mid-IR, observing both Rabi contraction and cavity-filtered excited-state absorption signatures. We reconstruct the intrinsic response of intracavity molecules from the transient cavity transmission spectra to enable quantitative comparison with extracavity control experiments. We report no changes in the excited-state dynamics of ReCl(CO) 3 (bpy) under ground-state VSC. However, we do observe significant amplification of transient vibrational signals due to classical cavity-enhanced optical effects. This effort lays the groundwork to pursue direct excited-state VSC aimed at modulating photochemical reactivity.

Performance Analysis of Phase 2 Tracker Upgrade Ps Module before and after Irradiation

The Large Hadron Collider will undergo a luminosity upgrade targeting a peak instantaneous luminosity ranging from 5–7.5×1034 cm−2s−1. The ambitious goal of the High Luminosity LHC is to achieve a total of 3000–4000 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13–14 TeV by 2029. To cope with such challenging environmental conditions, the outer tracker of the CMS experiment will be upgraded using closely spaced silicon sensors (pixels and strips) to provide tracking information at the Level-1 trigger. A PS-Module, composed of both a pixel and a strip sensor, was tested at the Fermilab Test-Beam Facility to evaluate its ability to provide accurate tracking information, Pt discrimination capabilities, and optimal performance at the irradiation levels expected after being exposed to the harsh conditions of the High Luminosity LHC. The results of the test and the comparison of the module performance before and after irradiation will be presented in this poster

Theory Manual for the Reaction Summary Module- SUMMAR

The post-processing module of DIF3D called SUMMAR was created to produce commonly used reactor engineering outputs. It is a optional output option for DIF3D and provides alternative summarizes of power, flux, and neutron balance over the user specified regions and areas. It can also provide isotope-wise microscopic and macroscopic reaction rates along with the effective one-group microscopic cross sections needed for solving the Bateman equations. This report serves as both the theory manual, user guide, and software verification of the SUMMAR module. The methodology and equations for all SUMMAR calculated parameters are presented here and discussed. Then the verification work, based upon simple DIF3D models, is presented to validate the derived equations. The SUMMAR inputs and outputs are detailed and examples are given to demonstrate it.

Design, Fabrication, and testing of Direct Air Capture Sorbent modules to increase understanding of trade-offs in pressure drop and capture efficiency

Conference presentation for the work entitled “Design, Fabrication, and testing of Direct Air Capture Sorbent modules to increase understanding of trade-offs in pressure drop and capture efficiency”. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in Direct Air Capture (DAC) of CO2. This technology is gaining attention as a method to enhance the reduction of atmospheric greenhouse gases (GHGs), particularly when used alongside other decarbonization strategies. The route for efficient and net carbon negative DAC is challenging because CO2 in the atmosphere is highly diluted (~400ppm). This work, utilizing 3D printing capabilities for rapid prototyping, presents application-based findings on the design, fabrication, and testing of DAC module form factors that house solid sorbents. The work leverages an experimental rig that can achieve air throughput and velocities approaching that which are anticipated for commercial scales. The tradeoffs of pressure drop, footprint and capture efficiency are discussed for different orientations of a NETL patented sorbent material.

CFD Modeling of Concentration Polarization in High-Performance Flat-Sheet Modules

Membrane-based gas separation is a promising, regeneration-free route for industrial CO₂ capture, but its performance is often limited by concentration polarization (CP). Classical 1-D models neglect CP and thus overpredict fluxes, especially for today’s high-permeance, high-selectivity membranes. Therefore, we built a 3-D CFD model that resolves local species transport, boundary-layer resistance, permeate-side effects, and pressure drop in flat-sheet modules. Using the Concentration Polarization Coefficient (CPC) and the overall Effective Membrane CP Index (EAC), the model quantifies how geometry and operating conditions shape CP intensity. Simulations show CP becomes pronounced for advanced membranes, with feed-channel height emerging as the dominant geometric lever: shrinking the gap mitigates CP but raises pressure drop, forcing a trade-off between mass-transfer enhancement and energy cost. These insights emphasize the need for CFD-level analysis in next-generation module design, where 1-D treatments can severely underestimate required membrane area and misguide scale-up.

Current-Regulated Arc Modulator Optimization

n this study, the performance of a current-regulated arc modulator was investigated with a focus on its role in initiating and sustaining plasma discharge within the Magnetron Body of the LINAC system. The analysis centered on how switching components, circuit topology, and feedback loop architecture influence critical factors such as energy efficiency, discharge stability, and long-term plasma containment. Particular attention was given to variations in pulse termination behavior, as observed through oscilloscope traces, which revealed inconsistencies affecting the duty factor and cathode temperature. These fluctuations have downstream effects on the cesium-coated cathode surface, thereby impacting H⁻ ion production and beam reliability. Simulation-based testing in LTspice was used to evaluate noise suppression techniques and arc current regulation schemes, revealing how optimized snubber networks, improved pulse shaping, and feedback stability can mitigate modulator-induced noise. Investigating Temperature Uniformity and Accuracy in PV Module Lamination: A Verification Study

This study investigates the temperature uniformity and accuracy of a photovoltaic (PV) module lamination process by addressing inconsistencies identified in 2017 data where irregular temperature changes were observed across setpoints. The 2017 data showed a notable drop in temperature upon bladder initiation, except for the 145 degrees Celsius profile. This inconsistency indicated potential inaccuracies in manual data recording methods. To address this concern, a verification experiment was conducted to evaluate temperature uniformity across the 2014 Bent River SPL2828 laminator platen and within test samples. Thermocouples, paired with Omega data acquisition software, were deployed to measure temperatures at multiple platen locations and within test samples. The experiment compared lamination temperatures of polyethylene-co-vinyl acetate (EVA) encapsulant when paired with solite glass or TPE backsheets. The methodology included verifying temperature uniformity directly on the platen and by using a large glass/EVA/glass sample using multiple thermocouples. Smaller samples were built with glass/EVA/glass and glass/EVA/backsheet configurations with one centered thermocouple to verify and compare sample temperatures. This verification aims to refine lamination temperature profiles, enhance data accuracy and provide insights into optimal process control for uniform module lamination. Ensuring consistent and uniform lamination may improve the accuracy and reliability of research outcomes.

Adiabatic Longitudinal Island Formation Due to Phase Modulation Using BLonD

The studies of adiabatic island generation through tracking near the quarter integer resonance and separately, through phase modulation was conducted using the accelerator code BLonD. Parameters from the Hadron Storage Ring (HSR) were used in the model. The demonstration of resonance island formation through phase modulation will help to understand this possible source of beam dilution during the store and further control of the bunch shaping. In this document, an algorithm to calculate the 5 th , 7 th , and N th order resonances is given, tracking results are presented, and the stable fixed point calculations with comparison to Poincaré contours are given.

Preliminary Evidence for Sex-Specific Trends in Probiotic Modulation of Gut Saccharibacteria in Familial Mediterranean Fever Patients: Effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus INMIA 9602 Er 317/402 and Escherichia coli M-17

Candidate Phyla Radiation bacteria are emerging members of the human microbiota, particularly in oral and gut environments. Saccharibacteria were previously identified in the gut microbiota of healthy individuals and women diagnosed with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), a monogenic autoinflammatory disorder prevalent in the eastern Mediterranean region, including Armenia. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and diversity of Saccharibacteria spp. and its basebiont Schaalia odontolytica in FMF patients, explore gender differences, and evaluate the modulation potential of two locally produced probiotics: Lactobacillus acidophilus INMIA9602 Er317/402 (Narine®, VITAMAX-E, Yerevan, Armenia) and Escherichia coli M-17 (Colibacteron®, VITAMAX-E, Yerevan, Armenia). The abundance and behavior of saccharibacteria and S. odontolytica appear to vary depending on health status and sex. Placebo administration caused both quantitative and qualitative shifts, suggesting a possible interaction between Candidatus saccharibacteria spp. and Schaalia odontolytica, though the underlying biological significance remains to be clarified. Narine administration appeared to increase the abundance of Candidatus saccharibacteria operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in FMF women and S. odontolytica OTUs in FMF men, whereas Colibacteron selectively decreased certain OTUs, predominantly in FMF women. These findings underscore the need to further investigate saccharibacteria’s role in systemic inflammation and probiotic-mediated modulation of the gut microbiota.

Best Practices for Measuring the Modulation Transfer Function of Video Endoscopes

Endoscopes are crucial for assisting in surgery and disease diagnosis, including the early detection of cancer. The effective use of endoscopes relies on their optical performance, which can be characterized with a series of metrics such as resolution, vital for revealing anatomical details. The modulation transfer function (MTF) is a key metric for evaluating endoscope resolution. However, the 2020 version of the ISO 8600-5 standard, while introducing an endoscope MTF measurement method, lacks empirical validation and excludes opto-electronic video endoscopes, the largest family of endoscopes. Measuring the MTF of video endoscopes requires tailored standards that address their unique characteristics. This paper aims to expand the scope of ISO 8600-5:2020 to include video endoscopes, by optimizing the MTF test method and addressing parameters affecting measurement accuracy. We studied the effects of intensity and uniformity of image luminance, chart modulation compensation, linearity of image digital values, auto gain control, image enhancement, image compression and the region of interest dimensions on images of slanted-edge test charts, and thus the MTF based on these images. By analyzing these effects, we provided recommendations for setting and controlling these factors to obtain accurate MTF curves. Our goal is to enhance the standard’s relevance and effectiveness for measuring the MTF of a broader range of endoscopic devices, with potential applications in the MTF measurement of other digital imaging devices.
