In-beam γ-ray spectroscopy of 68 Fe from charge exchange on 68 Co projectiles

Excited states in the neutron-rich nucleus 68 Fe were populated using a 9 Be( 68 Co, 68 Fe + γ)X charge-exchange reaction at 95 MeV/u. The new γ-ray transitions reported here for the first time complement data from β-decay studies and nucleon knockout reactions. In comparison to shell-model calculations with the LNPS effective interaction, two candidate states for the $6$$^{+}_{1}$ level emerge. Here, the distinct population pattern of excited states and the magnitude of the cross section, σ inc = 0.51(6) mb, make this reaction a promising one for future in-beam γ -ray spectroscopy. Reaction calculations with nuclear structure input from a new, locally optimized Hamiltonian, f7j4a, together with general considerations for heavy-ion-induced charge-exchange reactions appear consistent with most of the observations, although challenges remain.

Peak Power Minimization for Commercial Thermostatically Controlled Loads in Multi-Unit Grid-Interactive Efficient Buildings

The load profiles of most commercial and industrial consumers are characterized by brief periods of very high power consumption followed by intervals of lower demand. To encourage such consumers to flatten their load profiles, power utilities in and around the world often levy a monthly demand charge (DC) on the peak demand measured over brief intervals. In this work, we consider the joint optimization of energy costs (EC) and the instantaneous peak power of a multi-unit building which uses a hydronic heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) system and responds to a demand response (DR) program. Despite the non-linear structure of the problem, we show how optimal solutions can be obtained efficiently using linear programming. Next, we study the power demand patterns resulting from our proposed strategy for thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs), and evaluate the strategy’s performance for various climate zones in the US, under both typical and atypical weather conditions. Finally, the results show that depending on the ambient conditions and the tariff structure, our strategy can result in utility bill savings of up to nearly 19% compared to the baseline. The results also indicate that our power control strategy can significantly reduce the instantaneous peak power consumption in commercial TCLs.

Structure-Based Design of Macrocyclic Factor XIa Inhibitors: Discovery of the Macrocyclic Amide Linker

A novel series of macrocyclic FXIa inhibitors was designed based on our lead acyclic phenyl imidazole chemotype. Our initial macrocycles, which were double-digit nanomolar FXIa inhibitors, were further optimized with assistance from utilization of structure-based drug design and ligand bound X-ray crystal structures. This effort resulted in the discovery of a macrocyclic amide linker which was found to form a key hydrogen bond with the carbonyl of Leu41 in the FXIa active site, resulting in potent FXIa inhibitors. Here, the macrocyclic FXIa series, exemplified by compound 16, had a FXIa K i = 0.16 nM with potent anticoagulant activity in an in vitro clotting assay (aPTT EC 1.5x = 0.27 μM) and excellent selectivity against the relevant blood coagulation enzymes.

Wind Turbine Controller to Mitigate Structural Loads on a Floating Wind Turbine Platform

This paper summarizes the control design work that was performed to optimize the controller of a wind turbine on the WindFloat structure. The WindFloat is a semisubmersible floating platform designed to be a support structure for a multimegawatt power-generating wind turbine. A controller developed for a bottom-fixed wind turbine configuration was modified for use when the turbine is mounted on the WindFloat platform. This results in an efficient platform heel resonance mitigation scheme. In addition, several control modules, designed with a coupled linear model, were added to the fixed-bottom baseline controller. The approach was tested in a fully coupled nonlinear aero-hydro-elastic simulation tool in which wind and wave disturbances were modeled. This testing yielded significant improvements in platform global performance and tower-base bending loading.

DRoP: Automated detection of conserved solvent‐binding sites on proteins

Abstract Water and ligand binding play critical roles in the structure and function of proteins, yet their binding sites and significance are difficult to predict a priori. Multiple solvent crystal structures (MSCS) is a method where several X‐ray crystal structures are solved, each in a unique solvent environment, with organic molecules that serve as probes of the protein surface for sites evolved to bind ligands, while the first hydration shell is essentially maintained. When superimposed, these structures contain a vast amount of information regarding hot spots of protein‐protein or protein‐ligand interactions, as well as conserved water‐binding sites retained with the change in solvent properties. Optimized mining of this information requires reliable structural data and a consistent, objective analysis tool. Detection of related solvent positions (DRoP) was developed to automatically organize and rank the water or small organic molecule binding sites within a given set of structures. It is a flexible tool that can also be used in conserved water analysis given multiple structures of any protein independent of the MSCS method. The DRoP output is an HTML format list of the solvent sites ordered by conservation rank in its population within the set of structures, along with renumbered and recolored PDB files for visualization and facile analysis. Here, we present a previously unpublished set of MSCS structures of bovine pancreatic ribonuclease A (RNase A) and use it together with published structures to illustrate the capabilities of DRoP.

Conceptual Design of a Tension Leg Platform With 22.3 MW Vertical Axis Turbine

Here, this paper presents the conceptual design of a tension leg platform (TLP) for the ARCUS “towerless” vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT). VAWTs are ideal for floating offshore sites and have several advantages over horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWT) including reduced top mass, lower center of gravity, increased energy capture, and in turn lower cost. The towerless ARCUS VAWT drives these advantages further through increased structural efficiency and by enabling more optimized TLP designs with simplified installation procedures. For hull sizing, we have studied three turbine sizes with corresponding power ratings of 5.1 MW, 10.4 MW and 22.3 MW. The largest turbine was identified as having the greatest potential to reduce the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and is the reference size used for the further detailed design process. The conceptual design of the VAWT TLP has been awarded with an ABS Approval in Principle Certificate. This paper contains brief analysis results and design findings for a TLP designed to house a VAWT, including the following topics: • Applicable Design Codes • Metocean Conditions • ARCUS Turbine Loads • Design Load Cases and Requirements - Pre-service TLP Stability - In-place TLP Global Performance • Platform Configurations, Hull Structure Scantling Design, Weight and CG Estimation, and General Arrangement Drawings • Hull Ballast Plan for both Pre-service and In-place Conditions • Pre-service Quayside Integration, Transportation and Wet Tow Stability Analysis • Global Performance Analysis for Motions and Tendon tensions • Summary of cost components and system levelized cost of energy

Synthesis of Operable Process Intensification Systems—Steady-State Design with Safety and Operability Considerations

In this work, we present an integrated approach to synthesize process intensification systems with guaranteed flexibility and safety performances. The synthesis of intensified equipment/flowsheets is addressed through the Generalized Modular Representation Framework (GMF), which utilizes an aggregation of multifunctional mass/heat exchange modules to represent chemical processes. Thus, the optimal design options are investigated as mass- and heat-transfer opportunities using superstructure-based optimization techniques without a prepostulation of plausible configurations. To ensure that the designs can be operated under a specified range of uncertain parameters, a multiperiod GMF representation is developed based on the critical operating conditions identified by flexibility test. Risk assessment, accounting for equipment failure frequency and consequence severity, is incorporated as a constraint into this synthesis model to derive inherently safer designs. The resulting safely operable intensified systems, which are represented via phenomenological modules, are then identified as corresponding equipment-based flowsheets and validated with steady-state simulation. We demonstrate the proposed approach through a case study for the production of methyl tert-butyl ether. Here, the results indicate that safety and operability considerations can result in significant changes in the structural and operating parameters of the optimal intensified design configuration.

SUSPECT: MINLP special structure detector for Pyomo

We present SUSPECT, an open source toolkit that symbolically analyzes mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problems formulated using the Python algebraic modeling library Pyomo. We present the data structures and algorithms used to implement SUSPECT. SUSPECT works on a directed acyclic graph representation of the optimization problem to perform: bounds tightening, bound propagation, monotonicity detection, and convexity detection. We show how the tree-walking rules in SUSPECT balance the need for lightweight computation with effective special structure detection. SUSPECT can be used as a standalone tool or as a Python library to be integrated in other tools or solvers. Here, we highlight the easy extensibility of SUSPECT with several recent convexity detection tricks from the literature. We also report experimental results on the MINLPLib 2 dataset.

Evaluation of automated stability testing in machining through closed-loop control and Bayesian machine learning

Here, this paper describes a system for automated identification of the optimal stable cutting parameters in milling through Bayesian machine learning and closed-loop control. The closed-loop control system consists of a process monitoring architecture, an analysis framework, and a feedback mechanism. The analysis framework consists of a Bayesian machine learning algorithm that learns a stability map given test results. The learned stability map is used to select parameters for stability testing using an expected improvement in the material removal rate criterion. The test parameters are communicated to the machine controller to complete the test cut through a feedback mechanism. The test cuts were monitored using an audio signal; the stability of the test cut was determined by analyzing the frequency content of the audio signal. The test result was fed back to the Bayesian learning algorithm to complete the loop. Experimental results demonstrate that the system can identify the optimal stable parameters without information about the cutting force model or the structural dynamics. The system provides a low-cost method for optimal stable parameter identification in an industrial environment.

Atomic-Layer-Deposited Aluminum Oxide Thin Films Probed with X-ray Scattering and Compared to Molecular Dynamics and Density Functional Theory Models

A better understanding of amorphous aluminum oxide’s structure and electronic properties is obtained through combined experimental and computational approaches. Grazing incidence X-ray scattering measurements were carried out on aluminum oxide thin films grown using thermal atomic layer deposition. The corresponding pair distribution functions (PDFs) showed structures similar to previously reported PDFs of solid-state amorphous alumina and molten alumina. Structural models based on crystalline alumina polymorphs (PDFgui) and amorphous alumina (molecular dynamics, MD) were examined for structural comparisons to the experimental PDF data. Smaller MD models were optimized and verified against larger models to allow for quantum chemical electronic structure calculations. The electronic structure of the amorphous alumina models yields additional insight into the band structure and electronic defects present in amorphous alumina that are not present in crystalline samples.

Ternary Phosphides Ba M 2 P 2 : Tailoring Crystal and Electronic Structures Enables Highly Efficient HER Electrocatalysis

Binary transition metal phosphides and their solid solutions have emerged as promising hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. Although many research endeavors have adopted strategies to vary compositions to optimize catalytic performance, they mainly focus on binary structures, which represent only a small fraction of the abundant phase space of structure types among transition metal phosphides. Here, the largely unexplored class of ternary and multinary ordered phosphides in catalysis comprises two or more metals with quite different chemical nature, concealing the structure–property relationships essential for advancing catalyst design. Here, we explored phosphides crystallizing in one of the most abundant ordered intermetallic structure types, —the ThCr 2 Si 2 type, —where square nets of 3d transition metal M and P atoms are separated by layers of electropositive Ba cations. Four ternary BaM 2 P 2 (M = Fe, Fe/Cu, Fe/Ni, Ni) catalysts were synthesized and characterized. BaNi 2 P 2 showed high HER activity in acidic electrolyte, which required an overpotential, η 10 , of only 62 mV to drive current density j = –10 mA/cm 2 and high stability with a potential drop rate of 0.25 mV/h. BaNi 2 P 2 outperformed other Ni-based catalysts, such as Ni 2 P and Ni 5 P 4 . Notably, at current densities above –170 mA/cm 2 , BaNi 2 P 2 outperformed the standard Pt electrode measured under identical conditions. Electronic structure analysis revealed a volcano-type activity trend among the four BaM 2 P 2 catalysts based on their d-band center positions, highlighting the role of electropositive Ba cations in shifting the Ni-3d orbitals into an optimal position.

Structure-Guided Development of a Potent and Selective Non-covalent Active-Site Inhibitor of USP7

Deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) have garnered significant attention as drug targets in the last 5–10 years. The excitement stems in large part from the powerful ability of DUB inhibitors to promote degradation of oncogenic proteins, especially proteins that are challenging to directly target but which are stabilized by DUB family members. Highly optimized and well-characterized DUB inhibitors have thus become highly sought after tools. Most reported DUB inhibitors, however, are polypharmacological agents possessing weak (micromolar) potency toward their primary target, limiting their utility in target validation and mechanism studies. Due to a lack of high-resolution DUB∙small-molecule ligand complex structures, no structure-guided optimization efforts have been reported for a mammalian DUB. In this paper, we report a small-molecule∙ubiquitin-specific protease (USP) family DUB co-structure and rapid design of potent and selective inhibitors of USP7 guided by the structure. Interestingly, the compounds are non-covalent active-site inhibitors.

Influence of the Ozone Dose Time during Atomic Layer Deposition on the Ferroelectric and Pyroelectric Properties of 45 nm-Thick ZrO 2 Films

Over a decade ago, ferroelectricity was discovered in doped HfO 2 thin films. The HfO 2 -based thin films have attracted much attention due to their remarkable scalability and CMOS compatibility. Other than the HfO 2 -based thin films, the undoped ZrO 2 thin films are understudied despite their commonly reported antiferroelectric behavior. However, being of the same fluorite structure as HfO 2 -based thin films, the undoped ZrO 2 also displayed considerable ferroelectricity as demonstrated in recent studies. Here, 45 nm-thick polycrystalline undoped ZrO 2 films are synthesized using atomic layer deposition with different ozone dose times. The ZrO 2 films are crystallized after atomic layer deposition at 350 °C without anneals. In general, the longer ozone dose time causes a lower in-plane tensile stress and oxygen vacancy content, which help facilitate an irreversible non-polar tetragonal to polar orthorhombic phase transition with electric-field cycling. However, the lower in-plane tensile stress and oxygen vacancy content also stabilize the monoclinic phase so that a long ozone dose time (>17.5 s) reduces the ferroelectric behavior. After wake-up cycles, the ZrO 2 thin film with an ozone dose time of 17.5 s exhibits a remanent polarization of 6 μC·cm –2 and a pyroelectric coefficient of -35 μC·K –1 ·m –2 . Moreover, the wake-up behavior is consistent between the ferroelectric and pyroelectric response. As essential factors in optimizing the growth of fluorite-structure thin films for ferroelectric applications, the in-plane tensile stress and oxygen vacancy content significantly influence the ferroelectric and pyroelectric properties. Additionally, the low thermal budget for processing ferroelectric ZrO 2 thin films is valuable for semiconductor back-end-of-line processes.

Analysis and Optimization of a Multi-Layer Integrated Organic Substrate for High Current GaN HEMT-Based Power Module

In this paper, analysis and optimization of a multi-layer organic substrate for high current GaN HEMT based power module are discussed. The organic multi-layer substrates can provide high electrical performance in terms of low parasitic inductance in the power loop by providing vertical layout, and shielding for reduction of common-mode noise, a common problem in fast switching power converters. Furthermore, high performance cooling solutions, such as micro-channel heat sinks, can be directly bonded to the substrate for optimum thermal management. The structure of the proposed architecture, thermal analysis and optimization of layer thickness, thermo-mechanical stress analysis of the GaN HEMT and development of a high-performance heat sink are discussed.

Designing Cellular Metal Structures for Thermal Insulation

This project focused on developing topology optimization software to design advanced metal thermal insulators. Initially, solid designs were created that matched the thermal performance of current baseline designs but were significantly heavier. To address this, cellular materials were incorporated, specifically the octet structure which is known for its high strength-to-weight ratio and thermal properties. By leveraging these cellular designs at various densities, superior thermal and mechanical performance was achieved without added weight. This novel approach enhances thermal management and structural integrity under extreme conditions, offering promising advancements for thermal protection systems.

An Intraseasonal Mode of Atmospheric Variability Relevant to the U.S. Hydroclimate in Boreal Summer: Dynamic Origin and East Asia Connection

In this work intraseasonal modes of atmospheric variability over the Northern Hemisphere (NH) midlatitudes in boreal summer are identified via an empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of the daily 10–90-day bandpass-filtered 250-hPa streamfunction for the period of 1950–2016. The first two EOF modes are characterized, respectively, by (i) a single-signed streamfunction anomaly that extends across the NH and (ii) a regional dipole structure with centers over the Aleutian Islands and northeastern Pacific. The third EOF mode (EOF-3) is a quasi-stationary wave train over the Pacific–North American sector with an equivalent barotropic structure in the vertical. EOF-3 is associated with a northwest–southeast oriented anomalous precipitation dipole over the United States. A nonmodal instability analysis of the boreal summer climatological flow in terms of the 250-hPa streamfunction reveals that one of the top “optimal mode” disturbances mimicking the EOF-3 structure grows from an initial precursor disturbance over East Asia through extracting kinetic energy from background flow and attains its maximum amplitude in around nine days. An additional lag regression analysis illustrates that anomalous latent heating associated with cloud and precipitation formation over East Asia is responsible for generating the precursor disturbance for the EOF-3-like optimal mode. This result suggests the existence of an important connection between the hydrological cycles of East Asia and North America, which is dynamically intrinsic to the boreal summer upper-tropospheric flow. Knowledge of such a connection will help us better understand and model hydroclimate variability over these two continents.
