Views on computer program documentation and automation

Various aspects of the problem of program documentation and description are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the problem of semantics. It is pointed out that the information produced by documentation of a program, if presented to several different groups, may mean entirely different things to these groups. Recognition of the fact that people look at problems differently is proposed as a more practical approach to the problem of documentation rather than extensive use of standards or strict formatting. The difficulties involved in searching for ways to provide a common ground for the transmission and use of information are discussed.

Development of a weight/sizing design synthesis computer program. Volume 1: Program formulation

The development of a weight/sizing design synthesis methodology for use in support of the main line space shuttle program is discussed. The methodology has a minimum number of data inputs and quick turn around capabilities. The methodology makes it possible to: (1) make weight comparisons between current shuttle configurations and proposed changes, (2) determine the effects of various subsystems trades on total systems weight, and (3) determine the effects of weight on performance and performance on weight.

Development of a weight/sizing design synthesis computer program. Volume 2: Program Description

The program for the computerized analysis of weight estimation relationships for those elements of the space shuttle vehicle which contribute a significant portion of the inert weight is discussed. A listing of each module and subroutine of the program is presented. Included are a generalized flow chart describing the subroutine linkage of the complete program and detailed flow charts for each subprogram.

Development of weight/sizing design synthesis computer program. Volume 3: User Manual

The user manual for the weight/sizing design synthesis program is presented. The program is applied to an analysis of the basic weight relationships for the space shuttle which contribute significant portions of the inert weight. The relationships measure the parameters of load, geometry, material, and environment. A verbal description of the processes simulated, data input procedures, output data, and values present in the program is included.

Radiator design system computer programs

Minimum weight space radiator subsystems which can operate over heat load ranges wider than the capabilities of current subsystems are investigated according to projected trends of future long duration space vehicles. Special consideration is given to maximum heat rejection requirements of the low temperature radiators needed for environmental control systems. The set of radiator design programs that have resulted from this investigation are presented in order to provide the analyst with a capability to generate optimum weight radiator panels or sets of panels from practical design considerations, including transient performance. Modifications are also provided for existing programs to improve capability and user convenience.

Solar array synthesis computer program

Photovoltaic characteristics have been measured on solar cells irradiated by 1 MeV electrons to fluences ranging from 1 x 10 to the 13th power e/sq cm to 1 x 10 to the 16th power e/sq cm, for cell temperatures ranging from 123 K to 473 K and for illumination intensities ranging from 5m W/sq cm to 1830m W/sq cm. Empirical equations have been derived from these measurements to describe the behavior of light generated current, open circuit voltage and I-V curve shape over various portions of these temperature/illumination ranges. Both 10 ohms/cm and 17 ohms/cm n-p silicon solar cells were tested, and similar analytical expressions were formulated for easy comparison between the two resistivities.

NASA automatic system for computer program documentation, volume 2

The DYNASOR 2 program is used for the dynamic nonlinear analysis of shells of revolution. The equations of motion of the shell are solved using Houbolt's numerical procedure. The displacements and stress resultants are determined for both symmetrical and asymmetrical loading conditions. Asymmetrical dynamic buckling can be investigated. Solutions can be obtained for highly nonlinear problems utilizing as many as five of the harmonics generated by SAMMSOR program. A restart capability allows the user to restart the program at a specified time. For Vol. 1, see N73-22129.

RALPH: An online computer program for acquisition and reduction of pulse height data

A background/foreground data acquisition and analysis system incorporating a high level control language was developed for acquiring both singles and dual parameter coincidence data from scintillation detectors at the Radiation Counting Laboratory at the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas. The system supports acquisition of gamma ray spectra in a 256 x 256 coincidence matrix (utilizing disk storage) and simultaneous operation of any of several background support and data analysis functions. In addition to special instruments and interfaces, the hardware consists of a PDP-9 with 24K core memory, 256K words of disk storage, and Dectape and Magtape bulk storage.

SSME structural computer program development. Volume 1: BOPACE theoretical manual

The BOPACE program (Boeing plastic analysis capability for engines) was developed to meet the need for an advanced thermal-elastic-plastic-creep structural analyzer by providing incremental relation between stresses and strains. The cumulative stress-strain relation, for temperature-dependent, or temperature independent elasticity is discussed along with the option for plane-stress analysis or plane-strain analysis. The BOPACE solution approach is summarized.

Numerical analysis of stiffened shells of revolution. Volume 1: Theory manual for STARS-2S, 2B, 2V digital computer programs

The theoretical analysis background for the STARS-2 (shell theory automated for rotational structures) program is presented. The theory involved in the axisymmetric nonlinear and unsymmetric linear static analyses, and the stability and vibrations (including critical rotation speed) analyses involving axisymmetric prestress are discussed. The theory for nonlinear static, stability, and vibrations analyses, involving shells with unsymmetric loadings are included.

Numerical analysis of stiffened shells of revolution. Volume 3: Users' manual for STARS-2B, 2V, shell theory automated for rotational structures, 2 (buckling, vibrations), digital computer programs

The User's manual for the shell theory automated for rotational structures (STARS) 2B and 2V (buckling, vibrations) is presented. Several features of the program are: (1) arbitrary branching of the shell meridians, (2) arbitrary boundary conditions, (3) minimum input requirements to describe a complex, practical shell of revolution structure, and (4) accurate analysis capability using a minimum number of degrees of freedom.
